Navy Yard Bistro is one of my favorite restaurants for its great ambiance and delicious cuisine. Located off the beaten path in the Charlestown Navy Yard this spot is great for both intimate dates and large party affairs. Servers, bartenders and hosts are all friendly and knowledgeable and truly want to be sure you have an enjoyable meal.

Although this restaurant is great year round, I particularly enjoy the seasonal entrees, such as pumpkin ravioli and boneless short ribs in the Fall/Winter season.

I'm updating my rating to 5 stars, I'll explain why.

I just had my birthday this saturday and in the midst of trying to find a place for dinner all over the city I called every other restaurant looking for someone to sit a large party. So many restrictions, only at a particular time or on a particular day of  the week, you have to get this or that, won't seat incomplete parties and so on.

I call Navy Yard Bistro, "sure we can seat you whenever, we have a prefix menu, oh you'd like you change it? no problem. You'd like to add something else, again no problem. Not a complete party, no problem. you can change your menu selections when you arrive as well.. all is no problem." I fell in love all over again. They were soooo accommodating and easy going about the whole dinner experience. It was a breath of fresh air dealing with them as apposed to many other restaurants in the boston area.

Thank you Navy yard, for being so accommodating and having such great food!

I would really give it a 4.5 but since it is so close to home I will bump it to a 5 star. I have recently moved to the Navy Yard in Charlestown and couldn't be happier to have the Navy Yard Bistro in the neighborhood. If you are in the Navy Yard looking for a nice dinner, don't even think about it, just go to the Bistro.

They have a great original menu and tremendously friendly service.

I would say that the food itself is four star but the locations and cozy atmosphere bump it up to a five.

The dumplings are great for an ap and I have enjoyed the sirloin as well as the hanger steak.

The only issue is that they only serve beer and wine.

Fantastic!

I toom my mom and grandma here.  We had a wonderful dinner.

Mom and I started with Mussels- always a favorite, and very generous.  Grandma had the dumplings.  They were delightful, but small.

We had sangria with our dinner, which is a perfect balance- not too sweet, not too dry.

Dinner:  I had Lobster Risotto.  Mmm!  Fantastic flavor, and a good protion of lobster.  Mom had the Artic Char special- very tasty.  It's one of my favorite fishes, and it was fabulous.  Grandma had the Hanger Steak and fires, which was done perfect, and very tasty.

Of course, I'll be back.  It's right around the corner.

I went here with my family and I had the shrimp scampi. It's a pretty standard dish but the noodles tasted homemade and overall the dish tasted better than most of the shrimp scampi's I have eaten.

The atmosphere was very cozy. I had the banana chocolate pie for dessert and it was amazing. My mother's lobster risotto was very good too. Overall this was an impressive culinary experience. It was the kind of meal I wanted to linger over.

Working right down the street, we thought to try this place out. We arrive a few minutes before 5 but the doors were open, so we checked to see if we could sit but they actually told us that they wouldn't be opening for another 20 minutes because of the busy weekend they had...even though they are supposed to open at 5pm.

So we went to another place but came back around 530. We sat out on the patio and all we wanted was wine and cheese. When the hostess sat us, she didn't mention anything being sold out or off the menu, or the fact that if you sit on the patio you cannot just order wine, you must have food.

We go ahead and order our wine and ask for the cheese plate...but the waiter now thought to mention they ran out of cheese. He brought us our wine and asked for an order...we said we'd just stick ot the wine and now he thinks to mention that you must order food to sit outside.  We go ahead and order the Calamari and Clam appetizer...that arrives and it was absolutely horrendous. The calamari was so overcooked it was like eating a rubberband.

Can't open on time because you had a busy weekend, can't t hink to mention that a few items aren't available (even when on menu) makes for completely unacceptable service. Definitely will not be back.

Found this place through yelp for a Saturday night dinner. It was a little hard to find at first. Then we noticed the outdoor seating so knew it was it. Parking was easy right on the street by the place.

When we got inside there was a 15 minute wait to eat in but no wait to eat outside so we chose outside. No reservations unless you had 8 or more. They have small tea lights and some torches on the side walk but they could use more light out there. I could barely see what was on the table. Also the chairs outside where uncomfortable cheap looking plastic flimsy chairs. They should invest in some nice metal ones to match the tables.

Our server came over to take our drink order. We got 2 glasses of wine. They then brought over some bread and oil. The oil was plain. They should of added some red pepper flakes or vinegar to it. None was on the table.

We decided to get the duck confit appetizer but they were out of it so we chose the tuna tartare. I was disappointed with the size. It had 2 wontons stacked on top of each other with barely any tuna on each one. I could say one bite for each of us. For the $12 price we expected something more generous.

We had a long wait for our entrees. There was a guy dining alone next to us and he even noticed, using it as a way to start up a conversation with us. Right then our server had walked by and noticed us still without food so he went in and returned with our meals. I went with the Trout Almondine, my boyfriend the steak pommes. My trout was fantastic. Cooked with the skin on, very moist, a whole fish. Very generous portion. The fingerling potatoes underneath it were perfectly cooked. I was not a fan of the gratin fennel thing on the side though. My boyfriend enjoyed his steak. The fries on the side were thin, shoestring like with italian herbs on top. Our entrees were on the lower side, around $19 each. Wine list had some good choices starting at $6 a glass.

Just a note that I noticed the prices on the website have not been updated and are actually a few dollars more per item then what is listed online.

I would give another star if they actually had the appetizer we wanted, (when fine restaurants with small menus and are out of things, it's annoying, send someone to get more!), delivered a better tuna tartare and had quicker service. For now A-OK.

This place is AMAZING! I can't believe I never heard of it until someone suggested to come here for dinner.  It was SO amazing, I almost forgot the fact that I was with the world's biggest d-bag!

First of all, it is really difficult to find.  It isn't on the main road, but BEHIND a Store 24. You have to go down a small side street.  It's not on the water like you would think. No biggie, not like we were sitting outside during the winter (They do have an outdoor area).

We got there around 9:15 ( a bit early) and were seated within five minutes. I ordered a glass of wine off the bat. I was told they they were doing a wine pairing that evening....Four different reds, with a four course meal. I declined because...seriously? Four courses? No, thanks.

We ordered the Tuna tartar and I had the Salmon.  The d-bag I was with, had the Shortrib, which looked amazing too. Their wine list is incredible. I had a Shiraz ( a few).  I forget which type, but there were so many options to choose from. They can get pricey too.

Service was spot on. Attentive, but not in my face.  He was more entertaining than my company.

So, five stars for Navy Yard and 0 for the D-bag.

Went here after work on a friday night with some coworkers. I had the trout with potato wedges. IT WAS HUGE. THE WHOLE TROUT ( minus the head of course). The trout tasted really good and was moist all around. The potato wedges were a bit burnt so I didn't really enjoy it much.

I had tried THREE DESSERTS~my favorite part.
Banana Bread Pudding- I could see the steam rising from this dessert. I could taste the crusty outside but I didn't really like the pudding. It wasn't sweet enough for me.. .
Chocolate Cake-It looked so good and fudge-like. Very heavy and too sweat for me....
the Tirimasui was just right. It was in a glass cup and it tasted sweet and yummy =) It is what a Tirimasui should taste like...just Perfect

The restaurant was a bit expensive for my tastes but it is a nice place to go on a special occasion with a significant other. It is very romantic.

Such a great place! The owner is insanely nice and the service and atmosphere is great.

I also would recommend the Bistro for private parties/showers. We threw one for a friend of mine there and it was perfect!

My only suggestion would be they changed up the menu a little more frequently it's small and can get old if you frequent. Luckily everything on the menu is tasty especially the apps!

Foie Gras was sublime. Seared, firm and slightly crispy on the edges, not just mushy. Served on Pain Perdu surrounded by Apple compote. It just doesn't get much better than this. And that's the problem. After such a smashing appetizer, it would be impossible for the chef to get out of that one.

Sadly the Steak Pommes Frites, the ubiquitous Bistro food was quite good, but the steak was a bit on the chewy side and  I could taste the grill, I hate tasting the grill. But the Pommes Frties (French Fries) were actually good, I finally found good fries in the US after months and I don't know how many diners and dives, I have to go to a bistro to find some good tasty fries.

The Crème Brulée was a explosion of savory goodness served with fresh strawberries and blueberries, fruits worshiped in my neck of the woods.

The look and feel of the Bistro are a perfect blend of American Colonialism and French décor. You can't say your in Paris but then you don't feel like you are in some tourist trap either. Service was delightful as the Owner of manager took expert care of me and even asked for my name and shook my hand.

I'll definitely go back, just not for the steak.

Went on a Sunday night about 8pm.  No wait.

Great food, great server.  I will definitely be back.

I was having a hard time making a decision on what to order when the waitress appeared.  I told her I wanted fish.  The seared tuna looked great (it was the special), but the salmon had better sides.  She said the kitchen would be happy to make any substitutions.  Fantastic.

Two of us ordered the seared tuna, the other ordered the shrimp scampi.  We were all raving about our meals.

Our waitress was attentive and very helpful.

Yeah... this place is pretty darned good.  I gotta say i was a little surprised.  I don't really venture into Charlestown but i may a little more often now.

So, first i have to say the service was amazing.  Our waiter was super-extra nice and helpful.  He let us taste some wines before committing to a bottle.  Very awesome.  I know a lot of restaurants will do this but rarely has the server ever just offered it up.

The food was really good too.  i had lobster risotto which was awesome.  Some salad... that was pretty good.  The only thing i didn't like was the dessert.  It was pretty mediocre.  I'll still go here again for other foods though.

I've read the rave reviews on Yelp, and since I was in the neighborhood I decided to visit it with my partner. It was a bit hard to find since Google Maps on my cellphone puts it in the official Navy Yard area, while my Dash Express GPS put it just beyond it on Constitution Road. In fact, it's located right behind the Store 24 that's visible from 1st ave. Just go right around it, and you'll see a discrete door just off the corner, that's the entrance, the Yelp sticker is visible on the doorway. When you walk in you find yourself in a small area surrounded by an opaque curtain. Adds a nice air of exclusivity, but you can smell the delights to follow and hear the contented hum of the diners right then.

We came in just after 9pm on a Tuesday and were informed that the kitchen was closing and so we should hurry in making our food choices. A reasonable request delivered in the most courteous way I have experienced such requests before, so I didn't mind.

I had the tuna tartare appetizer to start. This consists of some marinated raw tuna cut into small pieces on top of a crispy flat wonton shell which waz vaguely reminiscent of a nacho in texture but with an airy consistency and very mild flavor that I could have done without. Initially I was disappointed at the meager amount of fish until I discovered an identical tuna and crisp pairing right below the first one. The double-decker is laid on top of a bed of arugula and strips of fresh cucumber. This affair is centered on the plate, surrounded by a pattern of very good soy sauce-based dressing.

My entree was the the haddock and clam chowder. This is a rather good chowder that requires a bit more work than usual. The little neck clams involved arrive in the chowder, but also in their shells, for which a small bowl is provided on the side. The haddock is a very well cooked fillet  placed in the center of the bowl on top of the chowder, surrounded by the clams. Once I partitioned it and mixed it into the chowder, it was incredibly satisfying. It was rich but not too thick with potatoes cooked to softness that still afforded a bite. I feel that the labor I had to perform didn't actually aid my appreciation of the dish. The serving of the haddock as a whole fillet seems to indicate that some patrons prefer to eat it directly with a knife and fork, but I imagine this to be a precarious affair since rather than the traditional plate, the fish is on top of some soup.

My partner had the pumpkin ravioli appetizer as an entree. Overall impression was good. I don't eat pumpkin so didn't taste them, but the texture of the pasta looked quite appropriate.

We both chose Josef Friederich Riesling Kabinett 2007 to accompany our meal and enjoyed it. I'll save the wine snobbery for another time.

For desert we had the chocolate cake which was deliciously dark and thankfully light despite the "decadent" tacked in front of its name on the menu. It was a nice change from the usual heavy and sweet chocolate cake that one finds under that title.

We had a little sparkling desert moscato to go with the cake.

The atmosphere was great with subdued lighting, a discrete environment, and wonderful music selection which went from pleasant vocal jazz to Spanish guitar. These days I find candles to be rare, so instead one can rate restaurants based on the quality of the LEDs they try to pass off as candles. Here they used only top notch LEDs with a carefully calibrated soft yellow light and rather realistic flickering. That makes it a tad less romantic, but the quality means that unless---like me---you inspect it directly, you're unlikely to notice the difference.

Overall, highly recommended as a romantic destination that's away from the commercial centers, but close enough for a brisk drive.

MBTA: There are some busses that go through here, as well as the MGH shuttles, but both stop rather early. Your best really is to drive.

All around superb. Excellent service, great wine list, cozy neighborhood restaurant feel, a great meal.

We ordered the salmon, short ribs, and mashed potato side - all were great. The apple crisp... so good. And the value at $16 / entree is remarkable given the overpriced crap you can find just over the river in Boston.

It was a totally great experience. We'll be back soon.

I brought my family here based on the Yelp reviews, and the fact that I really wanted to walk around Charlestown for the day.  The restaurant itself isn't very fancy--its a tiny little bistro that looks like it is tucked into the back corner of the store 24 building.  The name of the restaurant is simply Bistro, so we walked around for a while unaware that the bistro was infact the Navy Yard Bistro we were searching for.  Once inside, the restaurant is smaller than anticipated, and not quite as elegant as I thought it would be for the prices, but it was decent overall.

My dad's fiance is a former restaurant owner, so she often is a little pickier than the rest of us.  Anyways, she was horrified that all the glasses in the room all had smudge marks on them.  She mentioned this to the waitress, and 20 minutes later they had someone dilligently cleaning every glass in the room (so props to them for that, I guess.)

With the food, it was so so.  There weren't many entrees available that were interesting to me, and the appetizers actually seemed to be more intriguing than the meals.  All three of us ordered a salad with an appetizer as the meal, rather than a main course.  The salads were well prepared.  It took ages for the appetizer-meals to come out (we waited probably a good 30 minutes) but once they did we were pleased.  I ordered the mussels and they were delicious, and my dad got the crab cakes and said they were the best he'd ever had.  The wine and desserts were excellent as well.

I'm not sure I understand all the hype over this place.  Sure its good, but in my opinion no better than others I've been too.  I didn't see the bill but after each of us ordered a salad, appetizer, glass of wine, and desert, I imagine it was pretty $$$$ too.  Overall, I thought this was a nice place to eat, although unless I have a craving for mussels or crab cakes someday, I probably wouldn't go back because there wasn't anything too special about it, food-selection wise, and atmosphere-wise.

Went on a Saturday night, and got there around 7, and only had a short wait (no reservations for a party under 8), but the place filled up pretty fast afterwards.  The owner (or manager), host, and server were all really friendly and attentive.  I had the pumpkin ravioli appetizer - fantastic.  I went for comfort food - roast chicken and veggies with mashed potatoes, which was good.  My bf had the hanger steak with fries.  The fries were excellent.  We both had the sangria - it was a special, but I didn't like it - it was a little too bitter.  This is probably not the place to get a sangria, anyways.  Also, dessert was not good.  I had the chocolate cake and it was weak - not a ton of flavor or overly chocolate-y. Also, parking looked like it might be tough it you get there later.   But the prices are great, and everything else was good.  We both want to go back.

Ah the Navy Yard.  In 1972, Massachusetts was the only state to not vote for Richard Nixon.  When he was voted in  a landslide, he pulled the Navy from the yard.  We responded by gentrifying the area.

Payback is not a b..., as it turns out.

Which brings us to The Navy Yard Bistro.  NYB, as I will call it, has two rooms split by a fairly large bar and outside seating.

To be brief, if I ever have eaten a better piece of salmon, I really don't remember...Yes it was that good and at $16...A great deal

And for once, everyone else enjoyed their meals...Chicken and salmon

Excellent and unexpected....RIP Dick Nixon

This place is a great little secret, tucked away.
It's a shame that mostly Charlestown natives are the only ones to visit it.  The menu varies by season, so I was sad when the lobster risotto disappeared, but it will be back in the summer!

Went here for dinner last night.  Had two nice glasses of wine (Chardonnay and Shirazz) and then followed that with a steak frites.  It was quite nice.  The decor of the place is what I would call "Navy Yard Chic."  Exposed brick, and a warm, cozy atmosphere.  Good date place I'd imagine, though I wasn't on a date.

I'd come back here if I was over in that area again.  It was a perfect day for a walk and a nice dinner.  Don't miss the cannon at dusk and the lowering of the colors.

One of my new favorite little places, the Navy Yard Bistro and Wine bar is located at the Charlestown Navy Yard, right across from the Constitution. After dinner on a hot summer night, a walk along the pier is definitely in order!

The food here is so well-priced and so tasty that I'm nearly loathe to tell people about it. I wouldn't want it to become so popular that it becomes too jam-packed!  The mussels with fennel and bacon were delish and the grilled hangar steak was a perfect pairing for some of the best steak frites ever.

They're all about the wine too so that's another reason that I really love the place. They have a number of wines by the glass and the bottles are well-selected and aren't marked up too high.

Definitely a must-go-again-soon place.

Went to this place last night with a few buddies.  It is a hidden Gem.  Slightly hard to find but warm and inviting bistro feel.  Had a glass of wine at bar and then sat in the restaurant area.  Server was warm and knowledgeable.  We shared the cheese app.  4 cheese samples for ~$8.  Great cheese and value.   We had Mahi-Mahi(17), Sausage Sampler(17) and Steak(27).  All were excellent.  dessert was tiramisu.  I really liked this one.  Much less sugar in it than in most places.  Coffee was good too.  This place would be good for a romantic dinner with the wife followed by a walk on the water nearby.  Thanks Yelp for helping me find this place!  I'll be back.

I would give it 4 stars if they hadn't taken the braised short ribs and polenta off the menu.  that was one of my favorite dishes, ever...

If owner of NYB reads this, PLEASE bring this dish back!!  I've been checking the menu online every once in a while to see if it's there and I am disappointed each time.

Salmon is good as mentioned below.

Edit: bumping up 1 star.  Had the Short Ribs/Polenta last week, and although it was slightly different, it's still divine.

whoa! my socks were knocked off.

i never know what to expect when going to a restaurant i've never been to before, so i tried going in with no expectations, even after reading the glowing reviews from other yelp users.

the restaurant is tucked away a little, but no worries.  if i can find it, i'm sure a blind monkey with downs can find it.  There are a few tables set up outside, flanked by tiki torches to keep the bugs away, and i'm sure for some much needed light outside.

the host or hostess will greet you literally at the front door.  the host was very friendly and sat us promptly.  i spied around the place and it was very clean.

the wine list looked great (it better, after all it IS a wine bar), but the menu looked even better.  i was with a party of four, and we all orderd something different:  lobster risoto, halibut, salmon, and the artichoke and fontina ravioli.  The table also split the tuna tartare.

there were no complaints about anyone's dishes.  not only were all of the dishes extremely tasty, but they were sooooo reasonably priced.  i don't understand what's wrong with the owner...what was he thinking!?!?!???  i really want to bring attention to the lobster risotto...i can't eat it, because i'll likely die, but i couldn't get over how much lobster was actually in the risotto.  not stingy at all.  the host recommended it almost immediately after we walked through the door.  my boyfriend was more than happy he recommended it.

mm mm mmmmm....oh, sorry.  i was thinking about the food again.  wow, i'm a total freak.  anyway, go here.  seriously.  go here.

Never had a bad meal here.  The wine selection is extensive.  Their fish dishes are always outstanding, with fish perfectly done and tender. Their hanger steak is also delicious.  The menu is small and seasonal, but they have enough variety and unique specials.

Its small and gets very busy on the weekend evenings.  They don't take reservations unless you have a large party and the bar gets full quickly so there's not much room to wait.  The bar sits right in the dining room and the kitchen is open so if you get seated on that side of the room it can be loud but not so load that its annoying.

That being said, it is cozy with exposed brick and warm colors.  I like the atmosphere.  On warm nights the seating is nice outside because its off the beaten path and the its usually quiet in the Navy yard and its normally quieter than inside.  They do a nice after-dinner cappacino. One thing, though, don't expect cocktails - they don't serve them.  But the wine is excellent, the food is superb and if you want an after dinner drink you can take a short stroll over to Tavern on the Water, just a block & a half a way.

I rarely give anything a perfect score, but this place is very near perfect.  I decided to try it last Saturday with some friends after reading the reviews on Yelp.  It was great!

We were able to get seated on a Saturday night without too long of a wait (i.e. 20 minutes).  I ordered the artichoke and fontina cheese ravioli (one of the specials for the day) and it was wonderful.  I am no connoisseur, but the pasta tasted handmade and the wine recommended by our server was perfect!

My friends ordered the ginger-sake salmon (regular entree) and I think my other friend ordered the halibut (special).  I had a bite of each and they were both were very good.  For dessert, my friends ordered the creme brulee and an ice cream sundae while I ordered the chocolate cake with ice cream.  My cake was very good...warm, but not too hot with chocolate sauce and a perfect portion of ice cream.  I also tasted the creme brulee and it was fantastic (and I am not normally a fan of creme brulee).

I highly recommend this restaurant.

I love this place!  The atomosphere is great- very secluded and intimate.  I had a pork dish that was fantastic.

I was intrigued by this place based on all the glowing reviews, but have to say that I didn't feel this place was gush-worthy as some other Yelpers do.  Maybe it's because we ended up in the back with the people who brought their three year-old (with portable DVD player).  The wines were good--liked the list--and the menu looked fantastic.  My crab cake tasted OK but was not hot all the way through, but not cold enough to send back.  The steak dish I got was tasty, as was the mushroom ravioli my husband ordered.  When all was said and done, I didn't feel like the experience was worth the money we spent, however, I think we'll give it one more shot in the spring when we can sit outside.  That was our experience, for what it's worth!

This place is great! The menu is small but well-chosen -- I went with a big group for a birthday and everyone loved their dishes. I love that the restaurant is small, cozy, and off the beaten path...a great place to go for a special evening.  Oh, and we had an ice wine at the end of the meal which was amazing...such a great place!

I need to amend my first review of NYB.  About a year and a half ago, the restaurant was experiencing growing pains and I only awarded the NYB three stars.  But they have returned to their roots, and they now deserve and extra star.  They have mercifully brought back the chicken and mashed potatoes, and I no longer fear getting a fork in the eye every time I ask to substitute one vegetable for another!

The menu is well-priced (mid-range, about $15/entree) and the wine list is fairly extensive.  In terms of food, I recommend the aforementioned chicken with mashed potatoes as well as the Caesar salad.  Metered street parking used to be pretty easy in this neighborhood, but the popularity of Parris Landing and that dump The Tavern on the Water are making parking more difficult.   I'd recommend parking a couple of blocks away in the main section of Charlestown so as to avoid paying for a parking garage (all street parking in Charlestown is open to visitors on the weekend, and after 8pm on weekdays).

One final note-- as the NYB is fairly small, I recommend trying it on a week night.  The wait for a table can be quite long after 6:30pm on weekend nights, and it's gets very, very loud when the dining room and bar are crowded.

This restaurant is GREAT!  I love it so much!  It is very meaty, and I am vegetarian, but there is always a veg option and it is ALWAYS amazing.  The chef is fantastic and puts together the most delicious meals.  The atmosphere is great as well as the service.  It's a great place for a date, or for a group!  It's the kind of place you could spend several hours at drinking and eating...which is generally what happens to me when I go there.  The beet salad is very tasty.

Despite what you hear, there really isn't all that much available for dining in Charlestown; luckily the new and the staples are solid and make up for the lack of volume.  The navy yard is a fun place to hang out,but lacks variety.  The Bistro is just that; a fun place to hang out, but not a very varied menu; I completely agree with the review by Sonali last year; the lack of variety is made up for in quality of seletion and a solid wine list.  All this, in a cool but cozy dining room make this a great place for a date whether you live on the hill, or feel like taking a walk from downtown over the bridge at sunset and stopping in for a unpretentious but romantic dinner.

Nice wine bar in a comfortable atmosphere. Very neighborhoody and warm. Good selection of wine! We just drank so I cannot comment on the food but I really enjoyed the feeling of this place. We were there on the early side so it seemed quiet and a nice place to meet a friend for a before-dinner drink.

This is one of my new favorite's (doesn't hurt that I live next door) the food is affordable and great, the best dish in my opinion is the hanger steak with their special fries (don't need ketchup they are so GOOD!) They also have seating outside which has been great since we've taken the dog with us a few times.  For wine I have never been disappointed by Doug the bartenders choices.
