I was surprised when I went in. Generally the whole super west side of Washington is kinda weird for me- seeing as how I'm about as familiar with it as I am with Cartography . ( ba da bum!)
But it was really fun. I walked in with reservations because the outside of the building it a big concrete block. but I went in and the space has been utilized really well. Everything is very well put together and they have more than enough tings to keep kids interested. What I liked best was the bits on Torpedoes, Women divers and the places where you got to see what it would be like to be inside the crafts.
I really liked the submarine one. Also I went by their gift shop and they have a bunch of interesting local contributions in it and everything is really fairly priced- a big family could go in there and the kids could all get souvenirs with what they could find in the couch .
Everyone who works there is very pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful.
I'd recommend it for a family "stay-cation" .
This museum is excellent. It's free admission. It covers both the sea, but also everything you ever wanted to know about Submarines. There are exhibits on torpedoes, mines at sea, woman divers, and a model of the bridge of a Nuclear Submarine. It's a great way to spend a day. There is plenty of parking.
There's two antique submarines in the parking lot, pretty cool. Looks like ships out of a saturday morning cartoon, but hey if they worked, who am I say anything. Form should follow function, right. Hard to believe they were ever used. With free admission I have nothing to complain about, though I did give donations. The hosts were your typical world war II vet. Good guys. By far the best part was the compact, rotating cut-a-way torpedo engine. Look carefully, you may miss it.
I'm spellbound by this place! It's known as 'the Navy's official undersea museum'. It's fun sitting in the area with the periscope and check things out. There are simply GREAT exhibits in here. I like the history of undersea diving area. Best part...it's free admission.
