This place lives up to its reviews! The decor is luxuriously rustic. I would have loved to sit outside but it was way to cold when we went. The outdoor dining area reminded me of Brennan's in Houston (before the fire)- beautiful gardens, wrought-iron- tiny lights to add ambiance... really beautiful for a romantic date night.

The inside dining room is beautiful too. Nice warm, rustic decor.

But I have to say the food was phenomenal. Perfect combination of Texas game fare with a contemporary gourmet twist. I had the beet salad because I was on a beet kick and LOVED it. It was paired perfectly with the Texas goat cheese. Even my boyfriend who doesn't care for beets thought I ordered well!

The duck was fantastic and this restaurant made me start LOVING kale again. It was the best sauteed kale of my life!

Great place! Will definitely go back.

Maybe this was on off night, but...  After reading the Yelp reviews I was looking forward to a nice dinner here.  The location is charming, the staff is friendly, there is a nice wine selection.  Beyond that, the food was terrible.

The menu items all look interesting and have a local twist, the dishes came out beautifully, but everything was bland bland bland.  Except the seasoned butter which was so salty you could actually taste the salt "grit"

It did take quite a while for the meal to come out, which wouldn't have bothered me if the food was good, but as it was we paid fine dining prices for a below average meal.  Very disappointing.

We caught Navajo on a perfect evening and enjoyed dining in the courtyard.  It is a lovely place with an sophisticated Texas style upper casual atmosphere.  We loved being here.

Out waitress was a champion.  She did a masterful job of catering to us and offering suggestions.  We found out the new hubby is working in the kitchen.

Food was good.  Real good.  Just not out of bounds kind of good.  They have out of bounds good price tags, but I don't think the food quite lives up to the price point.  We didn't really care too much about that because it was just the perfect evening.  The kind of evening our group didn't want to have end.

Food was good.  Just not anything I couldn't make myself at home.  I wanted something more special.

I would most certainly come back here when in town.  The decor inside and out is tastefully done.  My kind of hang out.

I just can't give them 5 stars because while the food was good it fell slightly short of expectations.

Sometimes I hate being such a foodie snob.

Lovely anniversary dinner at Navajo Grill. Had the crab cake appetizer -- it was so delicious! Husband had the Nilgai special and was very pleased. I had the filet which was tender and flavorful. Garlic roasted kale was crunchy and accented the Nilgai perfectly. Our server was attentive and bussers kept our table clean and waters filled. Good job!

We eat here everytime we are in Fredricksburg.  This is always ecellant, a cut above the rest.  The service is great and the owner is such a kind man.  I would recommend this and I do to all my friends who go to Fredricksburg.  We will be there for New Years!  Can't wait!  I know there is a steak there with my name on it...

I would definitely recommend this place for some great steak, but be forewarned that you should expect to spend more on this meal.

I am not the biggest steak fan or steak eater, but I must say this is some of the best steak I have ever tasted!! If all steak were this great, I'd probably eat it a lot more!  The flavors were great and subtle, not overpowering.  It was cooked perfectly for me! Just melted in your mouth! The ambiance is definitely more formal/quiet, though formal attire is not required.  I'm really glad we decided to try this restaurant!

I'd give it  3.5 stars. The service started out very slow, but turned out decent. I had to go find someone to take our drink order after 15 minutes. I had the goat cheese app (very good) and Crusted fish and it was ok.

We should have waited to go at 7:30 and sat outside as the ambience is very nice out there. I'd recommend an outside table-- better feel to it.

Nice place and nice people once they had time to wait on you.

    Great meal!

The peach martini was super yummy - strong-ish but not too strong to drink.  The bread they brought with chive infused butter was savory and delicious - especially when it came back toasted with the goat cheese appetizer which was fabulous.  I could have made a meal of just the goat cheese and toasted yummy bread.

For my entree I ordered the bone in pork chop, which came with lime/garlic kale, ancho mashed potatoes, and a pear chutney of sorts.  All was delicious.  Kale isn't normally my favorite mainly because it is a bit tougher than other greens, but the lime/garlic worked well and although it was a bit chewy it was still good.  The mashed potatoes were nice and creamy and flavorful and the pork chop super yummy, the chutney complimenting it very well.

We split a chocolate flourless cake slice after dinner - this too was good, though not the absolute best example of this dish that I've had (that honor goes to Capital Grille).

Our waiter Kevin was very good and attentive but we could tell he was a bit stressed - until the end of our meal we didn't see any other server so it appeared he was stuck covering the whole restaurant!  We felt bad for him so left an extra good tip.

Decor was definitely nice side of casual - nice jeans / button down shirt would be just fine here.  My honey was worried he wouldn't be allowed in but several people were far more casually dressed than he was.

I can't wait to try this place again and sample some of the other delectable sounding dishes!

A great way to spend our anniversary dinner in Fredericksburg!

The food is lovely and delicious, but the unexpected highlight was the pumpkin soup.  First, I find it strange that pumpkin soup appears on a spring/summer menu - I hate to say I thought maybe it was a carryover from fall/winter or something.  Well, it's not.  It is a purposeful, and wonderful, inclusion on the current menu.  What an amazing soup.  Bits of roasted pumpkin seeds, shitake mushroom pieces, and a bit of a kick from the red chili oil - absolutely delicious!

Navajo Grill is a shoe-in for any upscale dining occasion in the hill country.  While it's an upscale place and warrants a step above casual dress (come on guys, no shorts), it's not imperative.  Reservations didn't seem necessary for our Sunday dinner, but it's never a bad idea for a Friday or Saturday, especially if you want to snag a table near the window.  The bar area is super cute, and separate from the dining room, so get there early and snag a drink or two!

When I made Christmas Eve reservations here it was a complete fluke - I was hoping to find a place that was open on Christmas Day; Michael, the owner was SO nice in suggesting somewhere for Christmas Day (Since Navajo Grill was closed) I decided to make reservations here, too.

We were dressed down - jeans, sweaters, etc - but fit right in.  The wait staff was extremely helpful and prompt.  Their special drink of the evening was a white Sangria and it was SWEET.  I enjoyed it immensely while my husband chose to order from their impressive, and expansive, wine list.

I ordered the fillet right off the menu but asked for the Dijon butter that was listed with their Windy Ranch Ribeye.  YOU COULD CUT THAT STEAK WITH A FORK; maybe even a plastic fork.  or a Spork. It was so incredibly tender.

Hubby has the seared white tuna special and said that it was fantastic as well - it was served with forbidden rice (a black rice) that I am going to try and make at home.   However, when I threw in the towel on my steak (to save room for dessert) he quickly offered to finish my steak for me.

Dessert?  What was that?  We both ordered the Creme Brulee (I don't share my creme brulee) and it was fantastic.  The owner stopped by to chat and said that he makes it with fresh yard eggs from a local horse farm.  It was dense and rich, with just the right flavor.

    This was an amazing experience.

    Top 5 meal. Ever.

Everything was done right. Try the crabcakes, duck, or sirloin. My goodness.

This restaurant, in my opinion, is as good as it gets. Local, unparralleled food without being pretentious. Highest possible recommendation.

Expect entres to cost between $25-$35.... but worth it.

Overpriced?  Not for the quality and quantity of what you get.  Upscale in Fredericksburg?  Yes.  Pretentious?  Never.  Laid back, relaxing, good times to be had!

The house salad is unbelievably fresh and the jalapeno vinaigrette is subtle and flavorful.  Lump crab cakes were full of crab, but definitely not "lump".  Didn't order the cheese plate, but viewed at another table it looked plentiful.

As mentioned by another reviewer, the bone-in pork chop... Oh My!  Slice through that chop like you slice through butter.  Even though a pear chutney is served on it, it's not overly sweet.  The garlic kale... Oh My!  Also had the beef filet, rare, to perfection.  Eat the ancho buttermilk mashed potatoes with a bite of steak, it will surprise you.

Good wine list and the most wonderful service!  If going at the regular dinner rush hour, depending on the holiday weekend, reservations recommended.  If dining early, it's no problem.  Atmosphere seems like you'd wear business casual, but most diners are in from a day of shopping.  My shirt and khaki shorts and sandals are never an issue there.

Very very good.  The cheese tray served the best Blue Cheese I have had in the US.  Maytag, she said and I will try to find it.  Very cozy atmosphere and good service with family members or young college students helping out with water etc..
    Some highlights:

*excellent and lots of flatbread served with the cheese tray
    *perfectly cooked 'medium' iron steak
    *tangy kale side dish
    *very good penne with shitake
    *lovely sangria

    lowlights:
*burnt cheesy pizza from the kids menu
*too much dressing on the romaine salad

    Still, liked it very much!

If you genuinely appreciate finely hand crafted food from local sources this IS the place. I've had occasion to dine there on three occasions. Mike Raymer is the quiet genius behind this restaurant. His son Josh is the quiet genius in the kitchen. I could go on and on about this dish and that dish...they are ALL created with love. When the kitchen is closed Josh will make his rounds and visit with customers...Who does this anymore? Mike's acute attention to details, well informed and friendly wait staff, fresh local ingredients, and a skilled kitchen staff run by a rising star Chef Josh Raymer earn the Navajo Grill my 5 stars..Bravo

Upscale "casual" dining in Fredericksburg. Take 1 part puppy's breath, 2 parts angel tears and 3 parts unicorn magic and this gives you the Navajo Grill.

To round out my birthday weekend we wanted to do a nice sit down dinner. We had made reservations for 8pm and arrived right on time. We asked if we could sit outside since it was a b'gorge evening and wanted to enjoy the fresh air. The decor of the place is darling, it looks like an old refurbished house and their patio looks like it used to be a covered carport. Marble top tables, elegant tableware and friendly smiles. :-)  Oh and they had a guy outside playing some tunes on his guitar.

The menu is full of all local and seasonal foods. Our waiter was absolutely fabulous, he was there when we needed him and made himself scarce when we didn't. Very friendly and told us all about the specials. To drink I started with their Seasonal Sangria....it had mango, pineapple and crack. Very very delicious!!! They also other specialty drink and have a great wine menu!   I started with their little house salad. Leafy greens, pecans and a jalapeno vinaigrette that was to die for! Don't be nervous of the jalapeno, its just a little kick, the perfect amount of spice with the greens. MP had the pumpkin soup to start and that by golly was one fine pumpkin. For dinner I had the crunchy & hot shrimp with sweet potato mash and roasted green beans. Ok. So I don't really know what the shrimp was baked in....other than holy goodness, but the plate equaled the perfect bite. Piece of shrimp, sweet potatoes and then a string of bean, dipped in the little aioli sauce = tears of joy. The shrimp by itself was damn tasty! That says a lot. The MP ordered the double pork chop. He said it was "amazing", I'll take his word for it. For the other meat lovers, they have sirloins and rib eyes all from local farms! Support your local farmers!

We were stuffed from dinner, so I decided to finish the night with a cranberry pomegranate martini. Yes. Yes I did. I mean, if you can't eat....drink, right?

We were all in nice jeans and were not over/under dressed. No smoking and no cell phones use allowed.

Peace and quiet. Great service, delicious food and the perfect date night atmosphere.

This was a great meal, and really redeemed Fredericksburg dining in my mind (after a grotesque experience at August E's last night).

Where at August E's we felt like we were perceived as a pain for making requests, at Navajo Grill we felt like valued customers they were trying to please.

They worked hard to understand our requests, and came through admirably.  We had a balsamic and tomato salad, a dish of olives, foccacia, spaghetti squash, an amazing kale with roasted garlic and lemon wine sauté, and ziti with sugar snap peas, grape tomatoes, broccoli, and a creamy tomato sauce.  The chef was vegetarian at some point and knows his stuff!

The restaurant is well appointed, but everywhere August E's is cold, Navajo Grill is warm.  I really struck me as having the same comfortable sensibility that is sometimes at home in nice restaurants in Austin, but with a New Mexico theme.

We had a Zilliken Mosel Riesling, and the meal was within $10 of what we paid last night at August E McSnooty's.

Eat here, what else can I say?

If you want a fine meal and a rustic, upscale atmosphere while in Fredericksburg, choose Navajo Grill. The impeccable service, creative, seasonal menu, and pleasant live music made for a wonderful dinner experience.

My waiter recommended the bone-in pork chop (which was enough for 2 meals), topped with pear chutney, served with mashed potatoes and some delicious greens. I loved it! I also had a bite of the Navajo steak frite, a perfectly cooked, mid-rare, flat-iron steak that was served with potato wedges, broccoli, and a flavorful gravy. This choice also did not disappoint. I imagine that Navajo Grill has some divine desserts, but I was way too full to find out.

Navajo Grill would impress business associates or could make for a romantic night out with a special someone. Keep in mind that the prices are commensurate with the quality of the food, so expect to spend $25+ per entree. But it's worth every penny.  As for dress--I'd say "casual elegant."  You're still in Texas, but this is no Tex-Mex dive.

Wow. All I can say is... wow. My boyfriend and I just took a one-night hiatus to the wholesome city of Fredericksburg this last weekend and decided to go to Navajo Grill for dinner. It was no regular dinner, my friends. Despite the robot-reading-from-a-teleprompter-waiter, it was more like a religious experience, in my opinion.

I had the Salmon and the b-to-the-f had the Duck. He is a self-proclaimed duck aficionado and said it was the best duck he'd ever had, so that's gotta be the best of the best in the review world.

Our dishes paired with a good bottle of wine and topped off with some crème brûlée!  mmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmm! Check it out if you're in town and don't mind droppin' a benjamin or two.

Worst service I believe we have ever had.  Had to ask for bread during our over 60 minutes for our main course.  Waiter ignored us until we flagged him down to get more water.  The food was GREAT (i had crispy shrimp), however it then took us 20 additional minute after completing our meal to get a bill.  We had a reservation.  Although the food, once it arrived, was wonderful, we would not return due to the AWFUL service.

Business calls - so off I went.

Fredericksburg, Texas:  in the middle of Texas Hill Country, not far from the Ranch of Late Former President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Fredericksburg is a small town that takes 10 minutes max to drive through, even when traffic is backed up or a cow is in the middle of the road blocking traffic.

There's a Chili's, McDonald's (love their coffee these days), and the usual commercial fare to be found.  But Navajo Grill is something special standing in their midst.

There is formal dining inside or you can enjoy the casual atmosphere of the rustic limestone patio bar.  The dining room is comfortable and tatefully decorated in a craftsman style / Western motif.  Afterall, this IS Texas, and we're deep in the heart of it.

I ordered the Lump Crab Cakes for starters- perfect, crispy and tastey.  followed by an 8 oz. filet mignon cooked medium, thank you very much.  My server, who was actually some sort of chef-type (i guess it was kind of a slow night) recommended a very nice Cab for me.

I can't recall what I had for dessert.  I do know the meal was excellent from start to finish.

Review definitely biased as I ate at this restaurant after the most awkward afternoon ever. I was with my best friend on a day trip to a local winery and she decided to invite a guy she just started talking to. I didn't mind since I thought he would bring a friend along for the other single girl. NO! So I ended up chaperoning my friend's day date. Upon leaving the winery we were all pretty famished and new we could not make it back to San Antonio for a meal. We stopped in Fredericksburg at NG based on the recommendations of local winos at the winery. Upon entering, we immediately knew we were out of our comfort zone. The atmosphere and crowd were meticulously groomed and had the air of old school money about them. We decided to sit outside.

The outdoor seating area was accompanied by a large outdoor bar, covered patio with ceiling fans and misters (always appreciated), and live acoustic music. The singer was by far my fav with his beer and giant bottle of aspirin sitting right beside each other! His music was soft and ambient, and did not overpower conversation.

I had the special which was grilled tuna with a micro green salad and savory crepe filled with blue cheese and grilled veggies. The food was tasty, but portions VERY small and prices VERY high. I paid $28 for my plate. Dude friend had steak and mashed potatoes for $32 and said his food was also scrumptious. Best friend had crab cake appetizer $12 and definitely got ripped off. When they brought out her plate, there were two crab cakes atop a huge pile of lettuce. The crab cakes were basically the size of a half dollar, just thicker obviously. I didn't ask for a taste because she would not have had any food left otherwise!

Even though the food was good, it was nowhere near worth the amount we paid for our dishes. I will not be back here anytime soon.

I have now been to Fredericksburg 3 times in the past 2 months on business and it is always a treat to be able to get away from work and enjoy a nice meal. Navajo Grill is THE place to be able to do this. The atmosphere is spectacular and the  food is great.

As far as the decor goes, every detail was meticulously done in the upscale texas/western theme of the dining room from the animal hide window shades and wrought iron chairs with fur seat covers down to the greenery adorning the tables. But it certainly doesn't feel like a saloon. It has a nice, open, airy feeling and the picture window overlooking Main Street provides plenty of natural light for an early dinner.

The outside bar on the way in had live acoustic music and misting sprayers for the hot evening and the courtyard in the center was adorable.

I ate the pan roasted chicken with summer veggies and mozzarella dumplings (yummy!) in a mint marigold vinaigrette. The chicken was moist and delicious and the veggies were fresh and wonderful. My client had the Navajo Blanket. Very interesting and she says tasty. Most of their choices are meat so vegetarians might have a hard time, but there is pretty much something for everyone.

Nice wine list as well. Prices are reasonable.

It also looked like they had a secondary building for private events, tres cute!

I highly recommend Navajo Grill (located right now Main Street - but isn't everything in Fredericksburg?) for a romantic meal, refined business dinner, or relaxing girls night feast.

Navajo Grill could easily be 4 stars or better but on Sunday when my wife and I dined here the kitchen must have been off of their game. We had a 6:15 reservation, we were welcomed and seated immediately, the restaurant has a very clean decor, tables are not to close, we were both impressed. Additionally, there is outside seating on their patio with a full bar, very cool setup but it was just to warm to sit outside. Our server was very friendly, quickly delivered our drinks and discussed the specials with us. We ordered the grilled pizza as an appetizer, it was cooked perfectly and was seasoned nicely. The team of servers kept our glasses refilled and made sure we had fresh bread which was very tasty. After our appetizer we waited approximately 45 minutes for our entrees to arrive which was not a big deal because we were enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and we wanted a chance for our pizza to settle. Our server apologized for the delay and offered us a free appetizer but we told her it was no problem and we didn't mind waiting. The entrees arrived and the presentation looked fine but the steak and salmon were both luke warm. When you are paying higher prices and waiting a little longer for your food to be prepared fresh you'd expect your meals to be cooked perfectly, unfortunately not the case. This restaurant has a lot of potential, they just need to get their kitchen to step it up a notch.

    always excellant.
others who can't seem to wait for their food for 30 minutes relaxing and enjoying conversation over a drink or two, until your food gets to you, should consider mcdonalds or some other place where food is almost immediate.
i do not understand adults going to dinner complaining about slow service,,,,your food is being cooked to order in most instances, and you need to relax or go to some fast food place.
always my favorite resturant in fredericksburg - keep up the great service and great food.

you know, i just wanted to update my review after reading one of the latest reviews and visiting recently.

first of all, yes, when you walk into navajo grill, some may feel out of their element.  i sure did.  i felt underdressed and heck, i honestly thought i would have a difficult time because i have such a limited diet.  not only does no one bat an eyelash at my questions regarding ingredients, but they also don't flinch when they see my hippie-hipster-looking husband and i, from austin, walk in.

i have never tried any of their meat dishes (other than fish), but every meal i have had, has been a delicious one.  yes, navajo is expensive, but so are most of the other restaurants in town.  show me a place with fresh (maybe even local) greens and fish that isn't fried, and i'll give it a try. i've definitely eaten at several other restaurants in town, all overpriced, but none have satisfied my palate the way navajo does.

i'm not a fan of the upscale texas cowboy vibe (cowhide, iron work, leather, etc), but i'm a mid century modern girl, it's just a matter of personal taste.  my only request is that they stay open until 10 all week..

My wife and I had dinner here on a recent Monday.  Her beet salad was wonderful and my simple salad was very good also.  The sourdough bread served was excellent; in fact, I ate three slices.  The bread pudding dessert was also good.  However, the entries were both disappointing: my wife's mushroom pasta had almost no mushrooms while the halibut special that I ordered for $28 was the size of an appetiser.  Although the ambience in the covered patio with an 8 ft. cascading water feature was wonderful, they need to do better on the food to earn a 4 or 5 star rating in my book.

Excellent experience. Pork chop was juicy and very tasty. Salmon on a plank excellent. Sweet and crunchy scrimp, so good that a friend had leftover for breakfast. You absolutely have to try the key lime martini for desert. (vanilla ice cream, key lime liqueur, grey goose vodka)

This restaurant has gone down hill under new ownership. It used to be a fairly friendly place with good food. Though the newer, bigger location has a nice patio and bar, the staff is rude, service slow and food not high value for the price. There are many friendlier restaurants in Fredericksburg with good food and service (August E's, for example).

I would have given it a 4 star if the menu wasn't priced on the higher end. I do not mind paying $100 for 2 but I want to be very impressed by the food and service. We had the crab cakes as an appitizer and they were awesome. I ordered the cedar planked Salmon and my wife had the Mahi Mahi and both were very average. The Salmon was better than the Mahi but was too small of a portion. The service was very freindly but seemed to lack experience for a higher end restaurant. This was the second time we had dined here and had the same result.

Some of the recent negative reviews of this resturant almost turned me off from it, but I'm so glad I went anyway.  The food, service, and atmosphere at the Navajo Grill are fantastic.  I went with a party of 6 to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday.  We started with cocktails outside on the patio, and then moved inside for dinner.  The food was great, with creative menu options (try the green chile grits) and hefty but not ridiculous portions.  Our servers were especially gracious when my boyfriend gestured wildly and accidently knocked a bowl of grits about ten feet into the air.  They landed all over the resturant, and while we all tried to be cool and helpful, the waitstaff were awesome about it.  They even let us bring in our homeade birthday cake, which they served for us (we made sure to give them all big pieces too).  My favorite thing about Navajo Grill, was that in the sea of doilies and antiques that is Fredericksburg, it's cozy but modern.

This review is based solely on the service or lack thereof as we didn't order food. My wife and I visited for our 20th wedding anniversary while staying in Fredericksburg. I made a reservation as recommended on the website for 7:30 for a Wednesday evening. We walked in and were told by a passing waiter someone would be with us in a minute. Briefly surveying the surroundings it looked nice and was maybe 1/3 full. We waited several more minutes and were finally greeted by a hostess. She proceeded to take us outside where we had to wait for a table had to be cleaned. Don't know why we had to wait on that particular table as several were available. After being seated that was the last we heard from anyone. We waited 10 minutes and then left. I'm not a dine and dash kind of person but would like a drink or at least acknowledgement that we're there. The menu items sounded good but I will never know.
