You want to know what it feels like to live in a small town, just step inside Nau's Enfield Drug.  This is definitely reminiscent of the small town eateries I would frequent with my dad when I was a kid.  I freaking loved this place the second I walked in.  The sort of haphazard cluttered feel of the place was just great.

We were hear to eat, so I started poking around looking for a high chair for my little girl and the pharmacist asked if she could help me.  I told her I was looking for a highchair, half expecting her to say "Sorry, I can't help you with that." Then she stepped through the little pharmacy door and found the highchair for me. Then proceeded to set it up, and she even tried to wipe it down for me before the server insisted he could do it himself.  It was a simple gesture, but it made us feel very welcome instantly.

We sat down right on the borderline between breakfast and lunch.  So, my wife got a Hot Dog, I got a Burger (of course), and the little one had eggs and hash browns.  I made sure to sample a little bit of everything and everything was pretty damn good.

I got the 1/4 pound cheese burger with grilled onions and it was solid from top to bottom.  They will cook your burger to temp if you ask them to, and damn... I gotta give props to the lady working the grill. She fucking nailed it.  I got my burger a PERFECT medium.  That earns you big time bonus points in my world.  I won't say that Nau's has the "Best Burger in Austin", but I will say that they have (so far) served me the "Most Perfectly Cooked Burger in Austin".  So huge props for that.

This is getting long, but I just have to add that the service was great but a tad slow (we were not in a hurry so it was fine for us). Our server was a super nice dude and I didn't experience one ounce of 'bad attitude' from anyone in the place the whole time we were there.

So needless to say, I will be looking for an excuse to head back to Nau's as soon as I possibly can.  I only wish it was close to my work so I could go for lunch all the time!

Oh yeah, and the Wife wanted to make sure that I mention that their "Milkshakes are really good!" Also, "They don't use real strawberries, and some people don't like that.  But I thought it was delicious."

Pros: Awesome Smalltown Feel, Good Food, Super Friendly Staff

Cons: It's Not Right Next Door to My Work, It's not Super Speedy, No Deep Fried Anything (So No Fries)

    JUST popped my Naus cherry!

Cheeseburger just like they do it---the large one and a chocolate coke.

Top 3 I have had in Austin and possible my number ONE burger to date.

Took everything I had, including my crowns in my mouth not to snab an Abba Zabba on the way out.

Step back in time and enjoy a soda fountain and diner in this drug
Store. Inexpensive tasty and friendly. Hear old Guy's solving the world's problems while listening to the Pina Colada song.If you are concerned with a napkin on the floor or have the ability to compare this place to Mighty Fine or Fudrukers I'm sure they will do just fine without you.

Even with the disorganization and sometimes indifferent employees at the front of the store, I love the soda fountain/grill at the back of Nau's. Very reasonable prices. Tasty burgers and shakes made the 'right' way (Amy's ice cream or Blue Bell). 'Real' cherry Coke (mixed at the fountain). And a very good club sandwich (I think the turkey/bacon/cheese club is $5.50 - that's about half the price of the club at 24 Diner in the same 'hood). The magazine rack is good, too.

Old school place with old school, friendly staff.  The burger is spectacular.
I don't really give a shit about the pharmacy.  If I need drugs ill go to Walgreens or my neighbor Rodrigo.

Burger portion size is huge.  Patty and all of the toppings were perfectly fresh.  The bacon was nice and thick too.

I got a chocolate shake which was ok.  They blend Hershey's syrup with their vanilla ice cream.  I'm not a fan of the Hershey's syrup style milkshake so that was a bit disappointing.  Plus they just serve it in a plastic cup.  It wasn't very thick as well, kind of milky.

Their ice cream sodas are way better.  They are served in the soda fountain style glass cup and you get whipped cream and a cherry too.  I would definitely get that over the shake.

Wait is a bit long at lunch but the service was good enough.

Loved it! I cant' believe I've been holding out so long, since the one by campus closed. I had what I would probably have to say is my new favorite club sandwich in town (get it grilled). I can't exactly say why it was so good, but the thick (but not too think) cut turkey, perfectly crunchy bacon, crisp lettuce and fresh wheat bread just did it for me. I'd say it was a little heavy on the mayo, but even that was forgiven because it was all so tasty. So simple, yet so perfect.  I do wish they'd add their old crinkle cut fries to the menu!!

Oh, and I'd consider it a slap in Nau's face to not order a shake. Just do it. I had the Oreo one today and I almost fell out of my cute, retro bar stool it was so good.

PS. don't forget to get some candy cigarettes or a bubble gum cigar on your way out!

Yes I have lived in Clarksville almost a year and never been here.

Yes I live a block from here and drove.

Yes I had a marvelous time here!!!

I had lunch here with a fellow Yelper who is a wealth of Nau's info.  He not only told me the history of the place, but also some of the famous patrons he has seen over the years.  For example, I was sitting RIGHT where Paul Newman once sat whilst having lunch with Tommy Lee Jones.  I almost needed a personal moment when I was told that.  I just kept feeling the booth.  (I really, really, really love Paul, I mean I cried when he died).  I also saw that Don Johnson had been there.  Swoon.

I went in knowing I was going to order a burger and milkshake, but almost got derailed because the breakfast menu looked killer.  I stuck to my guns and ordered the small bacon cheeseburger.  It was tasty!!!!  The milkshake was sooooooooo yummy too.  I consider it a kindness that they only serve food until 4pm as I work some distance away.  I'm only in danger on the weekends.

I loved the entire ambiance of the store, but it was enhanced with all the extra tidbits of information.  So many thanks to you, "Fellow Yelper".  I had a blast!!! :)

Nau's gets you on two levels:  first, that's a damn good burger.  Next, you're at an old school lunch counter in an active pharmacy.  Their burger choices are good (sizes and a few extras).  No fries, but they have chips.  You have to get a shake.  They're often out of malt.
Nau's a rare thing to have.  Go support them.

I'm now a fan of Nau's...it is a very tasty cheeseburger, but not the best I've had.

About the burger: a nice variegated 1/2 pound patty with lots of nooks and crannies to let the cheese slip into...5 stars for meat prep...however, the meat had a pronounced odd flavor to it...almost as if they were running out of beef this morning and added some ground patty sausage to the mix. Once I accepted the patty for what it was, I thought it was pretty darn good! My theory about the sausage mix was fueled by the server saying that they were "running out of everything today"...

The bun was basic, the toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion) were fresh and well distributed on the sandwich.

The strawberry shake was excellent...nice hunks of strawberry and perfect consistency.

The service was very friendly. The place is certainly charming, but not quite as cool as Borrum's Drug Store in Corinth, MS, or the HP Pharmacy in Dallas.

    I'll be back.

Every day the employees at Nau's travel back in time when they walk in the door ready to go to work. Here you will find the last remaining soda fountain in Austin, where they are frying up some tasty burgers and making the thickest malts and shakes in town.

I met a former work colleague here today for lunch and we sallied up to the counter for some tasty burgers.  It's the same mint green counter they installed in 1951. The burgers are great and a small is enough served on a soft bun with thick cut tomatoes, shredded iceberg lettuce and chopped onions. The grill does have mustard if you ask for it.  My friend loves mustard and created the customary mustard happy face on his bacon burger.  No fries on the menu but you can have a bag of chips for 50 cents.

Laura and Albert Labay still own Nau's.  It is one of Austin's old gems located in the heart of Clarksville.  Mr. Labay is still happily dispensing prescriptions and his daughter recently joined the family business.  The centerpiece of the drugstore is an island counter where an old cash register sits to greet customers as they enter.

I finally ventured to this place Sunday for lunch.  Not only did I learn a lot about Nau's Enfield Drug, but I also learned a lot about Clarksville.  Well, okay, I learned what the housing looks like (cute!), and what other restaurants are around Nau's Enfield (Jeffrey's, Zocalo, Caffe Medici).  I also learned that Nau's carries a fine assortment of joke products, like stink bombs, hot gum, cat-butt magnets, and fart-noise makers.

So I plopped myself down at the old-fashioned counter and ordered a small cheeseburger and iced tea.  The iced tea was pretty much wasted, as I was reminded by the menu -- after I'd ordered -- that Nau's has malts, shakes and sodas.  But which to order?  Should I get a chocolate soda, or a chocolate shake??  Forgive me, pancreas, but I'm gonna hafta order one o' them something-or-others!  But we'll get to that in a minute...

My burger was small but filling.  It wasn't the best burger I've eaten (I still think Hut's is better.  I haven't yet been to Casino, so shut up), but it still was a damn fine burger.  And the service was super friendly.  Towards the end of my meal, I finally ordered a chocolate soda.  And the soda-jerk/counter-dude hit me with an unexpected question:

[Soda-jerk]:  Which kind do you want?
[Me]:  Uhhh... chocolate? I already said that, didn't I?
[Soda-jerk]:  Oh, I know, but we feature two different kinds of sodas.  One involves chocolate and phosphates, and the other involves chocolate, carbonated soda, ice cream, whipped cream, and a cherry.  For the same price.
[Me]:  Well, wow, the latter one sounds a helluva lot better than the first one, so set me up, barkeep!

That dialogue really put a smile on my face.  The cute young soda-jerk was so friendly and helpful.  And that soda was GOOD.  I happily sucked it all the way home (take that statement as you wish).  Jessica S. and a random other friend both told me to get the shake when I posted my soda vs. shake dilemma on Facebook.  Well, guys, I failed you, but I pleased myself.  So there.  Ha!

Super cute place with all the old timey stuff you'd want from a soda fountain place (glass bottle sodas in the cooler, all the old time candy and decorations, etc.).  Fun to just go look around.

We just stopped in for shakes, which were great, but saw people with a HUGE (I mean, I hope you brought the family bit) banana split for just $5.75.  We saw some other people get burgers and the burgers were huge, too.  Not just the bread and condiments on them, the meat patties themselves were huge.

We will definitely be coming back to try the food and the awesome shakes!!!

I ate here for the first time today, and I loved it.

First of all, this place gets 5 stars for service. From the moment I walked in, people were very friendly, and it was a simple arrangement - no tricks to make a newcomer feel out of place or uncertain (like a "special way to order" or some unmarked "order here" station, etc). This was a welcome change from being made to feel like an idiot after literally being instructed in "how to order" at another restaurant yesterday...

Just sit down where there's an open table, and a friendly server will come take your order, and at the end, you go up and pay at the register (although you'd better bring some cash to tip at the food counter - the cashier at the front can't add a tip to the credit card transaction!).

I ordered the large cheeseburger, and it was epic. It has a 1/2 lb beef patty, which I believe they make right there in the store. It came loaded down with a thick slice of fresh tomato, some mayo, a bunch of fresh lettuce, and some onions (although not too many, which I was glad for). Easily the best cheeseburger I've ever had. This thing was SO thick, I was a little shocked (posting a picture to the Yelp page). I tried to smush it down like you can with a Big Mac, but it was no use. The meat was pretty legit, and isn't paper thin like at McDonalds, and there isn't that extra bun in the middle to let it compress. Eating it was a bit of a challenge, but well worth the effort. It was a fine line between carefully manipulating the burger to fit it in my mouth, and totally destroying it in the process.

We also tried Coke from their old fashioned soda fountain. The server explained to us that it was "premixed" and that it'll be a little flatter than we're used to, but a little sweeter also. I liked it.

Being thoroughly satisfied with the food, I'd definitely give it 5 stars for that too.

I'll definitely return in the future whenever I'm craving a thick hearty burger. I'll probably get a "small" burger next time though, so I have room for a shake too! :)

Burger was good, but not quite 2 stars/awesome. Large = 1/2 lb., with all the fixins (lettuce, tom, pickles, onions, thick bacon), cooked med. well (would have preferred Med Rare - but I forgot to mention). Good bun that contained this beastly burger to the end. Small burger is 1/4 pound.
Vanilla Malt was very good - as was the service. Such a crack-up to visit this place an see some old school Austinites (e.g. like they are from the West Austin news...hahaha) in there.

Tucked away in the back of a drugstore is a lunch counter with a sizzling griddle and soda fountain that will fill you with nostalgia. It's very likely to be exactly the way it was back in 1951 when Nau's opened, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

After walking in to what appears to be an ordinary neighborhood drugstore, I ventured to the back to find several counter seats and a few tables and chairs. It was late on Saturday afternoon, but nearly every seat at the counter was taken. That was a good sign. Sensing my hesitation, a very friendly local tapped me on the arm and informed me to have a seat anywhere I like.

The menu was filled with so many possibilities, but I came here for the burger. They come in small (1/4 pound) and large (1/2 pound) with mayo, a few slices of tomato, crinkle cut pickles, chopped onions, and a massive pile of shredded iceberg lettuce. I went with the large. For an extra buck, I added a slice of american cheese and thick-cut bacon that sprawled from my burger like the appendages of a Daddy Long Legs spider. All of this was contained in a toasted sesame seed bun.

The beef was well-seasoned, probably simply with salt and pepper, and had so much flavor. With a patty that was obviously hand-formed, it wouldn't surprise me if it was actually larger than half a pound. The patties are cooked on a griddle that is probably older than the building where it resides, and the flavor it imparts is the proof.

My burger was wrapped in some parchment paper that came in handy since it was quite literally bursting at the seams. The ample heaping of shredded lettuce provided a nice crunchy texture to the soft, tender beef. There was so much bacon, it nearly overpowered the flavor of the cheese (I barely knew it was there), but provided a great punch of added flavor. All in all, a fantastic burger!

Nau's does not serve fries or really any sort of sides to speak of, but the burger is so big, you probably won't miss them. Besides, you will want to save room for one of their ice cream sodas. And if you fill up on too many burgers and ice cream, I'm sure the drugstore will have something for that. Add in the fantastic service, friendly locals, and a really great burger and Nau's is worth giving a try.

    As of 9/2010:
    Small Hamburger (Large) - $4.00 ($4.75)
    Cheeseburger - $4.50 ($5.50)
    Baconburger - $4.75 ($5.75)
    Bacon Cheeseburger - $4.85 ($5.85)

I have one dare for burger aficionados out there: the Nau and Later. It's a bacon cheeseburger with all the goodies, plus a hash brown and a fried egg. It's greasy, delicious, and puts a smile on your face and maybe 2 inches to your gut. But, you'll leave happy from the experience of stretching your jaw to it's maximal opening stance only to bite down on happiness contained within a bun.

The servers are extremely friendly and know how to make sure you're having a good time. The fountain drinks taste a bit flat, but maybe it's because this is the way sodas tasted 50 years ago when fresh from a fountain and mixed with syrup. I'll just believe that so I can pretend I stepped into a time machine every time I come here. Regardless, I would go with a shake instead, especially the strawberry shake. Now THAT is something that is guaranteed to withstand the test of time.

Only thing I don't recommend are the waffles. They're really thick and give me dry mouth, no matter how much syrup I put on them. Just stick to the greasy fare here and you won't regret it.

I'm reluctantly writing this review. This is the kind of place that you'd really rather not have too many people know about. It's a gem. A classic. It doesn't get any better....so stay away!

You will not find a better cheeseburger or chocolate shake in town. You just won't. Huts' burgers (not the shakes) might be as good, but not better. But it's the ambience you're here for. Ordering at the old fashioned '50s-style counter..your cheeseburger seared on a flattop girl. (oops.make that 'grill').it doesn't get any better.

It's a cluttered little time travel trip, this Nau's, and a pleasant one at that.  Where you enter through what appears to be your standard issue locally owned pharmacy-by-way-of general store and make your way to the back of the room, where the magic happens.

When I say magic I'm referring mostly to the amazing burger, soup and limeade combo I took in today, and for what the rest of the place offers in no-frills catch-all prescription and trinket shopping, the food counter brings together in standard bearing Americana fare.  It's been noticeably cooler outside these past few mornings, and as I pulled onto my corner chair here, some steaming chicken noodle was just what I needed.  To be topped only by the juicy goodness of a burger piled high with fixings and all the time in the world to wolf it down.  This was more than a check on the list: Nau's set me straight on a day when only something hearty would do.

I want to rate Nau's higher but my burger really was only A-OK.  I would go back in a second but would I crave a burger from Nau's?  Not really.

Some good things: The service was efficient and friendly.  The place is super cute; the drugstore part has the hard-to-find old candy and that sort of thing.  There's also parking outside the store.

Nau's is worth going to, for sure, but more for the entire experience than the food specifically.

Holy greasy burger of delight. The meat was peppery and good, my shake was amazing and of course, you gotta love the diner feel.

The guy who cooked for us was very nice, throwing out some football trivia but i'd love to see him cleaned up.  Greasy is only good for burgers.

i know they dont have a fryer -- and its really sad because i love me some fries with my burger -- but everything else is so good that it makes up for it.

Burgers - Damn Tasty. Better than Huts, better than Hilberts, better than Top Notch.  Yeah - I said it. Consider the gauntlet thrown down.  Note - the Large burger is LARGE. This is good for me - no measly little meat patty here.

Ok Sure - you don't have a lot of options at Nau's - it's a very Basic menu - burgers, sandwiches, chips (no fries) and breakfast if you are there before 11am.  Of course there's the soda fountain and the malts that other people find delicious.

Yeah - THIS is old school. :)

Some places you want to keep secret, as too many customers might kill the uniqueness. But others, like our venerable gem Nau's, need to be given their full due, for they will always be what they are, even with a line out the door. And if there's one truly Old Austin place that deserves as much business as it can get, it's Nau's Enfield Drug.

There's nothing but pleasure every time we go to Nau's. This is my kind of Austin business: locally run for decades, still doing things the way they've always worked, not trying to keep up with the latest fad, always smiling and providing good service. Just a classic old school pharmacy with the soda fountain and hand-spun malts and yummy greasy burgers and grilled cheese and above all the serene vibe of years gone by.

This place positively glows with that inimitable 50s formica feel. The little wood booths, the Hamilton Beach shakemaker, the magazine rack, the old signs and pill bottles, the old stock that no one cares about but that looks like it belongs there so there it stays. Lots of strange little items and toys and goofy gags and everything that made being a kid and going to the drugstore a whole 'nother world a few decades back.
I always have flashbacks here, and they're always good.

Better still, I have never once had anything other than cheerful, friendly service at Nau's. The lady at the lunch counter today came up and said, "What'll it be?" I said, "Well, I either want a vanilla malt or a chocolate malt. What do you think?" She smiled and immediately said, "Oh, I think you want the chocolate," and turned around and whipped it up. My gal laughed and we happily returned to perusing a magazine. The malt was ready in a minute flat, and it was, as always, glorious, the sweet cold flavors and the warm atmosphere melding into one of the great Americana experiences: a perfect malt at the counter of a classic diner, served by a smiling waitress.

No worries about two people just having one malt with two straws, no rush to leave after we finished and just wanted to read the magazine some more (they know what's up, I bought two, hard to abandon a good article), no stress of any sort whatsoever in this room. Memories of old diner lunches with my folks always come flooding back, and that feels good. Then we stroll around a bit, say howdy to Lambert the pharmacist, look at all the great old stuff that you will never ever see at mallwart, and soak up the one-stop shop feeling as it once was and if we're lucky will forever be.

I love how Nau's just kind of lets things pile up here and there, character is everywhere. My favorite is the comb case on the left; half the combs have fallen into a pile on the bottom but somehow it makes perfect sense. Fine moments like that abound, many for such a tiny little room.

The young guy at the counter is super-friendly and goes out of his way to make everyone feel welcome. But then again I can't imagine not feeling welcome at Nau's. Which makes me love the following from a review on this page: "When I transferred my prescription from an L.A. pharmacy they charged me $1.00 for the phone call. Do they not have long distance? Do they not want my business? They try to be nice but they just don't have good customer service." Now that's a good one. Just don't tell the regulars who've been coming here decade after decade.

The review that says it all to me is the guy who biked across the US and ate at countless diners, and Nau's was his favorite. We're lucky to still have this place; I am in fact amazed that it has escaped the ravages of New Austin. No doubt QT will slither on in here to shoot a movie soon, but that might even be a good thing, because I don't think these folks is gettin' rich, and they deserve to.

Many thanks to the Labay and Nau families for creating so many classic memories for Austin, for almost 60 years. Long may you serve.

Best Chocolate Malt in town and possibly the worst pharmacy.  Malts override pharmacies in the rock/paper/scissor version but they are still lucky to get 3 stars from me.

    Malt:
Best Chocolate Malt in Town (Frans/Dans is my second vote) and a decent burger (chips, no fries). It's real drugstore counter and a nice place to get in out of the summer heat. One of those places you can go with a wet swimsuit on...and a shirt! Sometimes their service is a little slow, especially when you get there at the same time as a few other people, but it's not too bad.

    Pharmacy:
I've been all for supporting this non-big-box pharmacy but have had issues with getting a simple prescription filled. It even started off bad. When I transferred my prescription from an L.A. pharmacy they charged me $1.00 for the phone call. Do they not have long distance? Do they not want my business?

They try to be nice but they just don't have good customer service. I ended up having to transfer my prescription to "the man"...which was funny because when the big-box pharmacy called to get the prescription transferred Nau's wouldn't pick up the phone. It just rang and rang...for hours, so they said, but it didn't surprise me!

Nau Enfield Drug, you are a strange animal. There just aren't too many of your type around. The ever-loyal, old-fashioned type one can rely upon for everything from burgers and shakes to legal drugs to the odd silly gift.

I like you N.E.D. I like you despite the fact that every time I try and turn into your parking spaces some person bent on murder aims their vehicle at mine.

I can overlook this as long as you promise to keep providing me with what I need...what I want...what I like...you know what it is. Grilled cheese. Mmmmm baby, yeah. You know how I like it.

I actually read about this place this morning on YELP and took the wife this afternoon. Bacon Cheese Burger is what we had and YUM. Great tasting burger. I will surely go back. Neat feel as it is part of the drug store. I also had a vanilla malt. Best I have ever had. Wife agreed.
    Not a lot of seats.

Someone at my workplace mentioned about Nau's Enfield having good burgers. So I decided to try it out. It had a great nostalgic, vintage feel to it. When I first entered the store I felt like I was going back in time, then I see the people working there. Dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. I was hoping maybe that I would see employees have worked there ever since it opened.

Burgers are good but they could do better with the cleanliness of the place. I'm not OCD but I think it should be clean. When I sat at the counter I saw leftover lettuce and bread on the floor. Also I saw napkins on the floor.

I wish they had fries but I made due with the Ruffles potato chips I had. I will come back but definitely for a milkshake.

I love love love this place! I have been eating here for years when I lived in Clarksville and could just walk there. I decided to go back today for lunch. After looking at the menu (every time), got the same thing I always get. The Bacon Cheeseburger  and a bag 'o chips. It was the Friday special so it was $5.09.

Good stuff. Greasy goodness and the bacon was cooked perfectly. Not burnt, not soggy but crispy and crunchy. Three heaping big pieces that hung 2 inches over the side. They also grill the buns on the grill to give it some yummy greasy flavor.

Note. They do have fountain sodas but they are very flat. Buy a bottled coke at the front of the store.

Shopping at Nau's Enfield Drug is like going back in time, in only the best way.

This drugstore, which opened in the early 1950's, hasn't changed much since then.  It still boasts its original old-style formica lunch counter/soda fountain surrounded by swivel stools, a few booths, and a few little wire ice cream parlor/bistro sets.  They serve mostly burgers/sandwiches, chips, and ice cream treats, although there is also breakfast fare available earlier in the day.  The chocolate sodas are by far the best - an immediate endorphin boost, featuring vanilla Blue Bell ice cream smothered by a generous pouring of chocolate topping and all covered with soda.  The ice cream forms an icy coating that is just incredibly delicious.  You can't possibly feel sad after eating one of those.

The store itself doesn't seem like it has changed much since the 1950's, either.  In addition to the usual drugstore fare, they carry a better-than-average selection of retro candy.  A very cool place in one of my favorite neighborhoods in Austin.

    Adorable!  My neighborhood is adorable.

I feel like I was transported back in time - sup Marty McFly - this morning when I walked in.

They have a 50's style fountain in the back, loads of the drug store candy you hear old people reminiscing about from their days, your basic pharmacy stuff, and loads of random items you'd never to think to look for (and admittedly, the porcelain cat batting at the butterfly is probably not something you'd necessarily want to buy either).

This place is charming, go on a weekend, eat some greasy diner food, and fill your prescription at the same time.

Mmmmmm, burger slathered in grease, huhhhhhh

The old-school feel was very nifty, even neato.  Now the cook may have had 50+ years of grease in his hair and skin, but whatever, I was there for the burger and shake special.  The woman got the strawberry shake, real bluebell strawberry icecream and it was fanshmashtic.  I got cherry, it was good.

We each rocked the cheeseburger, loving the salt and pepper flavored meat.  The meat itself was great but everything else was just kinda there.  Lettuce, tomatoes, bun.  Nothing else added to the meal.  And I get why they don't have fries (allegedly $50,000 to put in a deep fryer) but burgers and chips don't have the same appeal.  Plus the chips aren't part of any meal.

It's no Five Guys or Sullivans, but definitely a delicious burger with a cool vibe.

Uh, yeah.  Nau's has one of the best burgers in town.  But the greatest thing about it's blast from the past persona is simple; they don't serve fries, they serve potato chips.  Real old-fashioned burger joints never have fryers, and Nau's stays true to that.

Also, if you're in a hurry, first, don't live in Austin, and second, don't go to Nau's, please!  If you get really anxious and impatient, don't go here and then yelp about how slow the servce is.  Nau's appeals to a citizen who enjoys the buildup to a great burger.

So pick up a section of the statesman, and get ready to be delighted, you won't be disappointed!

Well I never thought I'd have a drug store move me to tears, but Nau's nip of nostalgia did just that.

I was craving a burger and my friend suggested I try the nice greasy, griddle cooked old fashioned burgers at Nau's. I needed some Zyrtec, so why not kill two birds with one stone?

This place is seriously like stepping back in time and I love it!

I was perusing the shelves of their retro beauty products (Jean nate people!!) and sucked in my breath when I saw that they stocked Vitabath products. My beloved dad, who died suddenly when I was a teenager, used Vitabath shower gel and moisturizer every single day of his life since before I was born. This is what I always gave him for Christmas. The stuff isn't cheap, so many a saved allowance went to purchase my dad's Vitabath. After he died, the tradition died as well, so I haven't smelled it since 1989. I opened a bottle and took a great big whiff and my eyes filled with tears as I was engulfed in the scent of my father. What a magical find at my new favorite drug store. I purchased a bottle of course.

The cheeseburger? Very good - even though it took 25 minutes to make. My coke was flat, sadly. I like frothy, bubbly fountain sodas that sting on the way down. That's OK, I just sat at the Formica counter and read Texas Monthly while whiffing the Vitabath moisturizer on my hand. It was like having lunch with dear old dad!!

This place has been around for over twenty years before I was even born and is a relic to the good old days when people were more genteel towards each other and took their time to provide great care and service with a kind smile.

Go check it out and get a shake- they looked divine.

Skip the overpriced pharmacy items and head straight for the vintage lunch counter.  Nau's currently holds my title for Best Burgers in Austin. And believe me, I take my burgers very, very seriously.  Nau's are made from fresh ground chuck, seasoned perfectly with salt and pepper, cooked on a flattop griddle, and served with standard toppings on a squishy sesame seed bun.

The secret is their flattop griddle.  Man, that thing must be 80 years old, and it imparts a perfect flavor and crust on the patty.  Don't expect to pay cheap McDonald's prices, but it's worth the $5 or whatever for a cheeseburger.

I love it when things exist where you'd least expect it. Like a diner inside of a pharmacy/convenience store. I feel like I'm in the 1960's when I sit at their counter. And they have all the comfort food sammiches you can imagine. Their burgers are the perfect size, and can we say milkshake!? i also like to peruse their kids toy section. They have some of the best novelty gag gifts - like stink bombs and whoopee cushions. Ah - to be a kid again. I really feel like I've gone back in time in that place. And can I mention how much I LOVE that neighborhood?! Like out of a book.

Keep in mind that they don't have late hours. As in, the sun will still be out. I've arrived there 10 minutes too late several times and was left with an unsatisfied craving.

This place is a flash back in time to the 50's pharmacy/diner lunch counter.

When I need comfort food this place is my first choice.  They serve up a perfectly Grilled Cheese with Creamy Tomato Soup for dipping and a delicious Chocolate Malt...

I've never been here for lunch. Based on the reviews, that has to change! But breakfast is what I think of for Nau's.

Great breakfast tacos and their 2 egg, toast, sausage (with hash browns added) plate is awesome.

Service used to be slow, but the last couple of times it's been a lot better. Always nice folks and attitudes, certainly.

Good food, relaxing and non-pretentious atmosphere and fairly priced. I like it.

Not the Nau's of old.  Looked like a bunch of completely amateur greasy crackheads running the joint.  The place hasn't been dusted, much less cleaned, in 10 years by the look of it.  Worst service and food i have ever endured here in Austin.  Sad such an Austin icon sank.
