Cheap heart attack food.
Good drunk meal.
Those are the only two things that really come to mind when I think of nations. Always pretty busy, reasonable time of food prep.. not bad for fast food..
I really like their veggie burger!
Not many places are open at 11PM, this was one of the very few.
With only $10 cash, where could we go? I was really hoping for a place that accepts credit cards. Dessert at Mango Medley? no happy hour during the weekends. A place on Taraval? seemed not very dessert like but more coffee like. Holy Gelato? closes at 11PM. Polly Ann? Closes at 10PM. Eggettes? closes at 11PM. Marco Polo? Closes at 10PM. Tart-to-Tart? blahhhh. Bakeries or any other place don't open late. By the time we would get to any of these places, it would have been closed. After about an hour of debating where to go for dessert with a friend, we finally settled on this place.
By the time we got there, they didn't have many pies at this time. They had custard, pecan, pumpkin...I think that's it. How disappointing. We thought they would have more in the back, nope just whatever they had displayed.
Probably deserves 3 or 4 stars during the day.
Crowded & feels ghetto at night...so for night, Nation's gets 2 stars.
I can never get enough of Nation's Giant Hamburgers! *Yum!*
~Pro~
- Cheap
- Delicious hamburgers ("go light on the mayo & extra onions please!")
- Opens late
- Take-out service is good (call in & place order; when you go & pick it up no need to wait in line!)
~Con~
- Not too many tables
- Often pretty crowded
Overall, I love going to Nation's & getting me a hamburger anytime, any day!
OK so the lineup at Tani's was waaay too long and I wasn't going to wait so Nation's seemed like a really good option.
After all of these years Nations still rocks. Cheeseburger and salmon burgers for our table.
I've been wanting to try the chili hamburger. I really need to branch out a bit.
The seating is rather limited at this location.
Well compare to joe's cable car this one is a winner by far.
I went here the other day and got a bacon cheese burger with ole, small fries, chili and half of a chocolate cream pie and it only costs me like 15 bucks plus tax. I was completely satisify and my husband killed the pie hahahaha. The burger was a little messy but i didn't mind. May I remind everyone again to NEVER GO TO JOE'S CABLE CAR. yes i'm very sour about that place.
Here's a good grease burger for ya. Nothing fancy, it's just cheaper than the other burger joints around Daly City area, other than Burger King. The pies are very good and the place is open late. I can't give it a higher rating, because when I had to dump my garbage it almost fell on the floor because the can full. It wasn't the first time it was like that.
Dad loves to go there, that's why we went there.
They have to give 1/2 stars at some point.
I've always randomly ventured to Nation's throughout the years..
Havn't been there in a while though until last nite. It was pretty busy but nothing overwhelming.
I ordered a grilled cheese sandwhich and asked for milk with hella ice.
Cashier: What?
Me: Milk. and ice..hella. milk IN alot of ice..
Cashier: (grabs smallest cup known to man and gestures it towards me)
Me: (eyebrows scrunched) uhh can i have milk. with ice??
Cashier: (does nothing)
ALLLLLLLLrightey then!
So my boyfriend orders his infamous bacon cheeseburger with fries and a drink.
"just go get a seat" we both laughed...kinda confused.
Can i just get some fucking MILK WITH ICE OR WHAT?!
So i'm anticipating what the hell it is they're gonna do with my beverage considering that is such a difficult task...
We get our meal and I am served a cafeteria sized milk in a baby carton...
Oh my lanta...
Other than that odd fumble - the foods always good there. I just had to share that story..

- Burgers are a bit oily (but what burgers aren't? :P)
[W] This is a great spot for all burger and pie lovers. Everything is made to order other than their pies which Is their specialty. The nice and convenient thing about nations is that it is open 24/7. So everyone with that late night craving or the sweet tooth should definitely visit nations!
[M] Whether you're a pie lover or not, you must try their banana creme pie whenever you stop by! My sister brought one home for us once and trust me, one taste and you'll be hooked for life!
Breakfast that is only 5 dollars after tax is something that I can be pretty stoked about. This little treat includes: 1 egg, bacon/sausage and some hashbrown and a side of toast. I know right??? That is a deal and a half.
I have not had a chance to try the burgers but they place is really busy so they must some what good.
I LOVE YOU BANANA CREME PIE MY LOVELY PIECE OF CREMY PIE...
yes I come here late nights with friends when i have time to get a slice of this sugar daddy...
I even buy one of these pies to eat at work with my boss and co workers just to show them how yummy this is too me... everyone has there favorites and no favorites..BUT surely this PIE makes my mouth water!! WOOP WOOP to pie pie =)
I come here for the pie, I havent really found interest in the burgers yet...but maybe one day =)
p.s. everyone has their own opinions, but you never know if you dont try!~ CHEERS!~
I've been to Nations about 4 or 5 times over the course of the last 8 years and have never been disappointed, the last time being yesterday evening.
I got a cheeseburger with grilled onions, it was sooooo delicious! Great toasted buns and a really generous sized burger for it's price. I don't think it's possible to leave there hungry if you've eaten your whole meal.
We also got the chili cheese fries which are tasty too. The chili itself is good, so mixed with the fries and the cheese, well, you just can't beat that.
The best thing about Nations is it's open late, so you always have somewhere to go for a simple, quality meal. :)
a great place to go for munchies after an evening of imbibing, or the morning after to soak up and coat your tummy with grease. i ordered a bacon cheeseburger, but i was not inebriated enough to scarf it down. i picked out the patty and ended up with a blt. it was tasty enough, and definitely a gut bomb with a guaranteed heartburn. one of the gals in our group got the chili cheese fries, which were gooey and lovely.
the prices are very reasonable for the size. next time i want to try their salmon burger. we didn't have room for a slice of pie.
being back here brought back nostalgia of being in high school and coming here with friends.
This place is legit ya'll! Especially when it's 3am. Burgers are tasty and the fries are really something special. Go here and try it for yourself. The staff is really friendly and the place is clean.
I'm going to say that this place has gone a little downhill since the last time I was here a couple years ago.
Although large and for the most part edible, my burger was DROWNED in an endless lake of mayo. Usually they do slather on a lot here, but this time it felt like it was a whole jar. I used my napkin to scrape a couple layers off, and then my cheeseburger tasted better. I usually get the chicken burger. I think I should have stuck to it.
I had some fries which were good as usual.
When it comes to shakes you should get vanilla. Vanilla is their base flavor, so it tastes better than when you order a strawberry or chocolate shake. If you do decide to get choc. or strw. then be prepared for syrupy hell on Earth. it's the kind of thick syrup that sticks to the back of your throat and makes you tired of drinking your drink, if you can relate.
Their pies are good, although I didn't try it this time, I've tried their strawberry pie a couple times before and it's awesome. (Note that not all Nations have strawberry, but this one always does.)
In regards to the rest of the experience, it always tends to be a little crowded at night as it's a 24 hour place. Think of Dennys, but with 1/6 of their seating accommodations. You'll be lucky if your group is able to snag the large table on the left hand side of the restaurant, otherwise be prepared to split into two's and four's if you come in a larger group.
IN CONCLUSION
+ Fries
+ Pies
+ Chicken burgers
+ Vanilla shake
+/- Burgers
- Chocolate/Strawberry Shake
- Seating
Okay....these were the least impressive burgers I have had in so long. I was actually really excited to go in there and try one...only to be disappointed. You see, I treat myself to one cheat meal a week and it usually is a burger because I love them so much.
So here is what I experienced:
1. A largish burger that was overloaded with a head of lettuce that was bitter, too many condiments that when you bit into the burger it looked like it got excited and spunked on your face.
2. When I got to the center of the burger, it wasn't just pink. IT WAS RAW!
3. The restaurant was small, overcrowded with larger than average people. That alone made the place appear smaller than it actually was. Also, and most disgustingly, I stuck to the floor when I walked in.
There are two things that kept me from giving Nations a complete 1 star rating. First, the Chocolate Cream pie was divine. It was one of the best pies have had in a long time. Second, the fries were really good. They were golden fried and fresh.
So, I will never go back there for a burger....but pie...I would consider that.
The perfect place to go when it's L.A.T.E. at night and you are HUUUNNNNGRRRY. The cheeseburger is huge and juicy. Hit it with some ketchup and Tabasco and it's even better. The fries can't beat Burger King fries in terms of crispiness but still are yummy dipped in my ketchup-tabasco concoction. The orange juice is also yummily Tropicana or Florida's or Minute Maid or something like that...lol. A filling way to end a night of fun and play.
Oh yeah...I definitely prefer the lemon meringue pie over the banana cream. HMMMM :)
Mmmm...chili cheese fries!!! (my mouth is watering) The cheese burgers are also delicious but when the chili cheese fries and a burger are combined I slip into a food coma for a few hours...so I try and only choose one. I do wish that they had one further down the peninsula :( but I will make do!
I still prefer In N Out over this spot. The only plus is that this place is open forever and ever Amen.
I live real close, so its perfect after a good night of drinking and nothing left is open. Im from socal and the best to get is Carne Asada Fries, but with none of that here I will settle for this.
The burgers are whatever and the Fries are whatever, the Chili stuff im unsure of because I have no clue how long the Chili is stewing in there. My favorite thing honestly is the Grilled Cheese on Sourdough. Thats good stuff.
Again, im just happy its open 24hrs.
One of the best burgers I've had. Fresh, Tasty and Juicy. Oh and DO NOT forget the best banana cream pie! WHAT! My favorite pie
The fries are decent enough and the condiment stand with jalapenos is a plus. However, I don't recall ever finishing one of their bacon cheeseburgers (a standard; relatively cheap) before they get all cool and mushy. Why?
1) the burgers are big (and stuffed with the standards);
2) the grilled beef "taste" (not fried) gets overwhelming;
3) messy eating, spent equal time eating as cleaning off mayo/grease;
4) diminished appetite since never fails to see sweat-pants/PJs as decorum;
Yet, every so often I return. Why? In 'N Out (http://www.yelp.com/us...) was closed.
Awesome cheeseburgers with a shitload of mayo (I like mine with bacon)! And the pies, especially the chocolate creme pie, are really, really good.
Sometimes I'm just so fed up living in cali (especially SF) with all this organic, unprocessed, vegan, raw whatever crap ...so, I go here. Yea, it's bad for me, but I don't go here every week... and I also play ice hockey and lift weights regularly. If you're fat/have high cholesterol avoid this place... you'll ....have a heart attack.
Not sure about all the other reviewers but this place has never been really dirty (dude it's not like we're spending $400 at Masa's okay??)- but c'mon people, it's a fast food place you can't expect it to be totally pristine. Take your shit to go!
I've never felt "sick" after eating here (like those vegetarians that feel "sick" after eating meat...how annoying is that?) either.
All in all: Better than In'N'Out. Bigger. Awesome pies.
Chilly Cheese Fries are the best here!!!! The burgers are good, and the pies and nice and fresh. Love the fact that it's opened all the time, and the prices are reasonable.
It is a pity that this restaurant delivers on its promise of a giant hamburger, because the product is utterly flavorless, decidedly greasy and full of industrially-processed ingredients from the meat patty to the cheese. Remarkably, it seemed less healthful even than the major chains. And the pies? Real strawberries buried in a death-blow of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
Welcome to fat city! Open 24 hours to maximize your opportunities to attack your heart and shorten your life.
Awesome and simple! Very straight forward menu. They follow the KISS principle which more then likely helped them keep them in business in addition to great good.
I haven't been to Nations in literally 20yrs and its still great!! i had a cheese burger, fries, and a slice of cheese cake!!!
The hamburger was great! It was not soggy. It didn't have a ton of ketchup, mayo, or mustard on it. Just the right amount. It did have a lot of lettuce, tomatoes, and onions though. But i like that so it was fine with me. To me it was the definition of Hamburger.
The Fries: They were large, crispy, and very tasty!! Not all salty or dripping with grease like some places.
The Cheese Cake: it was ok. I'm not a fan of their cheese cake style. it was a light cheese cake that had a soft texture with a light sour cream after taste. I personally like a firm and dense cheese cake. Not to say their cheese cake wasn't good i just didn't care for that style.
Overall it was great!! One neat thing about the place is that you can see everything being done!! You can see the burgers being cooked, the making of the burger, fries frying, milkshakes being made, and pies being cut. Oh and the prices are super cheap! 2 Cheeseburgers, 2 fries and a 1/4 of a cheese cake for $16. Not bad.
I think Nations is an In-N-Out killer.
This is the place where I was at when I found out that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, had passed. Just thought I should document this.
Yeah it was a Thursday, 6/25/09, when I revisited this burger joint and my main goal was to have their Coconut Creme Pie. I promised my dear friend that it's one of my favorite, but just for kicks, we also ordered their in seasonal Strawberry Tart and couple of hot teas.
Their Coconut Creme Pie is like a nice sweet, but not too sweet, fluffy cloud in your mouth. And all the coconutty, creamy vanilla is all there. Heaven! Then we dived into the Strawberry Tart, it was just ok, not the best I ever had, but I give them kudos for using very fresh strawberries. I even skipped breakfast so I can balance these obsessive calories intake for our late lunch, smart huh? j/k
My main review is on their dessert in this place, not the burgers. I can't remember much about their burgers and it's been more than 10 years since I last had the burgers. If I do feel up to exercise my arse off another 5 days enough to burn the burger calories, I'll update my review.
When I was there, their service was just fast-food ok, the lady behind the counter did not seem too happy. According to my friend, the ladies' room was very messy with paper towels everywhere. The whole place was your average fast-food place, not very clean, and yet, not horrible.
Also, I realized that I am reviewing a pay-in-advance, "fast food" place and naturally, my expectation is not too high.
I just find it funny while reading other people's review about this place's sanitation, they found it appalling. Seriously, it's not a diner's burger (and some diners can be really gross) where you can/should have higher standards...fast foods' main purpose is to have you order and take it "to go".
If you want mud butt for days then go to his place at 2 am and order chili fries. Youll seriously regret it when your making a trip to walgreens to buy pepto bismol. yuck!
I have been going to Nations as long as I can remember, this place is great!!!!! burgers are greasy but that what you want.(always ask for light mayo if not they bury it on.) The Pies are what always keepingme coming back. The Banana cream pie is the best I have been gettinger there pies for ThanksGiving for the last 8 years. Always call ahead and reserve the pie it makes it alot easier for you
Never get anything with chili on it...I got food poisoning thanks to that stuff.
I've never eaten the food, but surely it's no better than any other burger and fries.
Chocolate cream pie, cheesecake, and Banana cream pie are awesome!
do you like pie?? Do you love burgers? Nations. Enough said.
I can't believe I've never been to Nation's till now because I remember seeing them around the Bay Area since childhood. I'm not that much of a hamburger fan and I don't eat pies, so I wasn't too curious.
When I heard about the salmon burger and I knew I had to try it. It's a bargain at $4.95. The ground salmon patty is quite thick. It's served on a soft, honey wheat bun (wish it had been toasted) with lettuce (not shredded, yay), thick slices of tomatoes, a hearty wedge of onion and enormous amounts of mayo. I know I shouldn't expect anything refined but I don't think I've ever seen so much mayo on a burger before. It was good though I am not too keen on the idea of treating salmon like a beef burger (thankfully they didn't add ketchup). I think it deserves a zippy condiment.
I like the open kitchen where you can watch things cook on the grill. The food is classic, old school American diner. The set up is a cross between a diner and a fast food restaurant. Order up front and help yourself to various sauces (mustard, honey mustard, BBQ sauce, etc.). You can refill your drink as many times as you want.
The burgers are three-quarter of a pound with all the trimmings and you can add on bacon, thick slabs of American cheese, etc. They have grilled chicken and vegetarian burgers. They also have hot dogs, BLTs, soft serve sundaes (only $1.05), shakes, and French fries. Then for dessert they have cheesecakes, pies and tarts (see the display case). They serve breakfast (omelettes and pancakes till 11:30 AM).
Open 24 hours.
BACON CHEESEBURGER. You know you had good bacon when, hours later, you have bacon-thirst.
I like to be an ultimate-fatass and eat a giant slice of chocolate cream pie, too. Not usually at the same time, though.
After a night of hardcore clubbing, I think I'm gonna end up keeling over and dying outside this place, that is if I can make it to the door. Many nights have been spent here with drunk company. I'll make it short and simple:
Chili Cheese Fries: Usually too much fries and not enough chili or cheese. By the way, make sure you specify Chili Cheese Fries and not Chili and Cheese Fries cause if you don't specify, you'll get exactly that... Chili AND Cheese Fries. For shodo, Frodo.
Grilled Cheese (with everything or without) & the Cheeseburgers: Hits the spot; the spot being your heart and then precedes to clog your arteries. Yes, it's buttery goodness on the outside then mayo badness on the inside. Cope out of the mayo, it'll buy you another day on Earth.
The Banana Creme Pies are yummy, too.
Came here for the first time in years at 1am on a sat.
I ordered the big honken slice of cheesecake which was not bad but...
burgers were overly greasy and not that great
i tried my friend's chili cheese fries and WTFFFF happened to that??!!! First of all the fries were stale and soggy and greasy. THe beans were watery and not good. and the worst part was instead of taking the time/money/effort of sprinkling cheddar cheese on top, they plopped down a square of kraft cheese or sumthing of the sort. NEVER COMING AGAIN!!
The first time I was brought to this place, I don't even remember a darn thing. Why? Because I was drunken asleep in the car while my friends chow'd down.
The second time I was brought to this place was over this past weekend. I actually woke up from the seemingly love drive from SF city. It was probably 2-3am, I don't even know. I guess in the bay there aren't many good food places to eat at the wee hours of the night, but this seems to be the "after party" meet up spot.
I ordered a cheeseburger because everyone and their mama raves about it. The desserts looked really good too, but sweets and liquor do not mix well so I chosed to stay away. I really wanted a chili cheese dog but I opted with the burger because it was a supposed "must."
Somewhere along the line, a fight breaks out in this damn place. I could probably write a whole story about it, but I'm just too lazy. All I have to say is that it was lame, it cleared out a table for us to sit on (which worked out for us), they broke a window, and the cops came pretty fast.
So there I was, drunk and eating my cheeseburger. Not too shabby at all. The bread is the key thing here. It's soft, fresh, and tastes good. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish my meal because I was just too intoxicated. I had a few bites of my friend's chili cheese fries which seemed pretty good at that time.
I don't know if my review is bias because I wasn't sober..? Sometimes we tend to enjoy food more when we are buzzing so I'm not really sure. Down south in LA, we don't have Nation's, but we do have In-N-Out which is hard to conquer. Animal style baby. At that moment, Nation's was a decent quick fix.
Big, tasty cheeseburgers! But I do feel kind of bad after eating them, not like In-N-Out. Other than that, they're well worth it for the size and taste factor. The fries are nothin' special, unless you add chilli and cheese. The shakes are cheap!
The 2 best things about Nation's are their pies (specifically their banana cream pie...YUMMM), and the fact that their open 24 hours. So if you're out late, and everything's closed, go here. And bring home a banana cream pie! And bring me one!
The first time I had Nations was on New Year's Eve 2006. My best friend came over with food from there and we fed each other cherry cheesecake that somehow ended up all over my red coat. Fast forward two years and I found myself there again with my dad on our weekly Friday lunches.
I wasn't feeling very hungry and I have dinner reservations at Va De Vi so I wanted to eat something small. I asked if he would split a veggie burger with me. I should've known better. He started going on a rampage of how I cause so much trouble for the family and how I should eat everything, including dead dogs. Yeah, okay Dad.
I was surprised at how packed the place was and also by how small the restaurant was. I always thought it was much bigger. I ordered the Harvester Burger on whole wheat with pickles and no mayo. He wanted the breakfast dish so I ordered him the Jr. portion, knowing he has the appetite of a 10 year old.
Our order took just about forever to get to us. They called my number and only gave us the breakfast plate. I waited a little bit longer, thinking my order would come out soon after but it never did. I told one of the ladies behind the counter that I never got my order. She totally goes apeshit on the other employees, yelling at them because I never got my order and how I've just been standing there waiting. Haha. That was really awesome of her. She also gave me free fries! I never eat anything deep fried and I hate potatoes but I appreciate the thought just the same. I brought them home for my fat ass mother to feast on.
I really liked the texture of the burger. Its made with some type of grain (Oh how I hope it isn't white rice!) which added great texture to it. I love that they load it with veggies since I'm a volume eater. The toasted buns were a nice touch too. I hate soggy bread. I topped my burger with ketchup, mustard, and then later I added some bbq sauce to it. I think I'll try their honey mustard next time. I didn't think it would be a good idea to put it on my burger after putting bbq sauce on it.
Although the place was packed, there were plenty of places to sit. The bill came out to be under $10. Another plus is that they're open 24 hours and it happens to be way closer to my house than the Denny's I usually find myself at after a night of drunken shenanigans .
I've been here a couple late nights. It's good, but it can get REALLY filthy and there's never enough seats. Avoid the bathrooms at all costs. It never seems like they have enough people working at night and they tend to let orders get backed up. It's to the point where I'd sooner go to Carls Jr.
Ehhhhhhhh...
Came here for lunch today. The place is a lot smaller than I expected for a 24 hr joint. I got a wild salmon burger with fries and a drink. My friends got the regular burgers.
There was nothing special or anything that stood out. It was just a VERY regular burger (aside from it being wild salmon) and VERY regular fries. Nothing was "nasty" or "bad" about the food here. It is just regular... too regular.
If you want burgers, just go to In-N-Out. If you want something to eat in the weeeeeeee-hours of the night/morning, I suggest going to an IHOP. I would most likely not come back.
No twenty fie cen cheese buhguh here!
Buh iss duh, soo good!I
It's hard to find old fashion style burger joint like these that have been part of the community for so long. I've lived right above westlake for 15 years and today was my first day going there. Fast service, great variety, and fresh vegetables. A world apart from In-n-out where everything is about, as the name suggests, getting in and out. You can place your order and look at the walls, or watch them make your food. Go with the Bacon Cheese Burger, it's twice the size of a double double. My friend got the Ole Cheese Burger and it looked great. They scrape out the seeds of the peppers so it isn't as hot, but adds just the right amount of flavor. One star off for the ugly outdoor tables and benches.
Most of my friends adore Nation's, unfortunately Nation's doesn't work for me. I've had their burgers on more than one occasion so it wasn't one of those "must've been there on a bad day" experiences. Having been to many burger places, both casual dining and fast food, their burgers are really tasteless and overpriced compared to the likes of Burgermeister, Fuddruckers, or In-N-Out. And each time I've had one, I always felt unsatisfied. My apologies to fans of Nation's, as I know this place has a long history and big following.
