My uncle is burred up here in one of the columbariums. It's nice. Very open air and well attended to. If you go into the house at the entrance, you can find a little history of the place as well as a database of all who are interned here. You can even get a printout map to help you find your loved one. It is a walk though. I take my great-aunties and grandmother to see their brother and sometimes the ground is uneven so they have a difficult time sometimes. At least where he is, it is shaded. It's very clean and solemn, just how a cemetery should be.
They have a very nice lookout that you can walk up to on the end facing Waikiki. The structure at the ocean side is very nice with it's mosaics of different conflicts as a reminder to all who visit.
It may be a bit harder to find for non-locals, so make sure to map it out before going.
As far as cemetaries go this one I pretty awesome. And I mean awesome in the sense of inspiring awe. There are huge beautiful trees and it's well laid out. And there is a gorgeous giant monument at one end. It's a great reminder of all the loss that people have felt and it has a very grounding effect.
As a bonus there is a pretty great view if Honolulu to be had just outside the gates.
R.I.P sailor jerry.
I'm not sure if we supposed to even rate a Cemetery but I'm giving it 4 stars just because it's very historical. When on a tour bus here and it was a good experience. Did not have much time to visit all the people that are buried but it was an honor just being there with the American flag blowing in the wind over the Cemetery.
Honolulu's version of the Vietnam memorial in D.C.
Also, it reminded me of Washington D.C. and all of the memorials there.
For me, cemeteries are always such a reality check, and always remind me of what is most important. This place even more so.
Even if you are just here for a few days, this place is worth the small drive. It doesn't cost you a dime (besides gas) and the scenery is worth it.
Plus, the fact that it used to be a place people were sacrificed is always cool too.
My grandparents are buried here so this place has special meaning to me. As cemeteries go, it is a beautiful setting. The actual memorial that chronicles the Allies movement through the Pacific Theater is really amazing, informative, and sometimes moving.
I really have a problem with people who visit cemeteries purely as tourists and do not afford these places the respect they deserve.
It 's quite an experience visiting this place with it's HUGE trees,
the shade they offer, and all that green grass at the
PUNCHBOWL memorial cemetary -
where some of our U.S. Soldiers, Admirals, Generals and others
are resting.
Having a chance to reflect and read the stones such as:
USS California, etc.
ALL located on a hilltop crater overlooking Honolulu, Waikiki, and Pearl Harbor .
A beautiful, peaceful place for reflecting on the sacrifices others have made for all of us.
