If I weren't so fashionably late about this place, I could have written a review about Nate's LONG ago.
Love the hushpuppies and the garlic bread soaked in olive oil. It's not just a place for you to go and get some good seafood, it can also be a great sports bar.
I ordered the 1/2 and 1/2 platter with broiled catfish and shrimp with vegetables on the side. Not very impressed with the veggies contained with carrots and squash, could have gone with the baked potato or the fries, but my health food freak mentality just took me over so I ended up ordering it with veggies. They looked like they've been overcooked.
The pineapple patron was to DIE for because usually I'm not a huge fan of patron.
Next time, I'll try the crawfish.
Ok, this review is simple.
Like good jazz/blues music? Better yet, like cajun AND seafood?
In the Addison area?
GO TO NATE'S!
YES, it's GREAT! Not too expensive, no shortage of food on any plate and it's GOOOOOOD!
This place is pretty delicious, the hushpuppies were a bit dry, but the catfish and the alligator poboys are deeeeelicious.
I didn't like the fact that going for lunch with 2 friends of mine resulted in me spending over $40...for 2 sandwiches and some catfish. The prices really are a bit ridiculous, but the bartender was a cool dude, attentive and nice and the food was yummy.
My wife and I are new to Texas so we were excited to try Nate's, as it came highly recommended from our friends out here! We come from San Diego where the closest you could get to Cajun food were a couple places where you could get boiled Crawfish.
We shared the Ceviche appetizer, which we hear is new there. It was GREAT! The flavors were very balanced between the seafood and the citrus/cilantro. I was especially pleased with how fresh the seafood was, which added to the sweet flavor.
I had the 1/2 Fried & 1/2 Smothered and Covered Crawfish! Both were very delicious and well prepared. The fried Crawfish were hot and fresh from the fryer. The Smothered & Covered Crawfish was amazing and almost a full serving in itself. Like a plate full of Crawfish Gumbo!
My wife had the Sausage & Chicken Gumbo and we both enjoyed this a lot! The broth was very good and there was obviously time spent in making the broth as the flavors of the Andouille really came through.
The only complaint I would have is the live music was a BIT loud while we were in the dining room. Also, the Beer there is served in these little bitty 10oz glasses :P I joked with my wife that I must have ordered a beer off the childrens menu :P
Other than that, Nate's was GREAT and the food was fantastic! :)
AWSOME FOOD. Great live entertainment. A MUST GO PLACE. By far my favorite
I've reviewed this restaurant several times, so won't be redundant by going over the same excellent points of this place. This is only about the seasonal offerings they have at this time.
Lunch today was chosen from those seasonal items, sea bass. It was grilled to perfection, soooo flaky, moist and lots of flavor, with the usual wonderful baked potato, lots of lemon squeezes and melted lemon butter. There are several offerings, whole lobster (how in the heck does one eat a whole lobster??? I've only had lobster tails, wouldn't know how to break apart a whole crustacean), calamari (not for me, tho) and several other choices, including drink specials. Now on the menu, and this is REALLY interesting...homemade tamales? At a Seafood and steak restaurant.? However, I was enticed, but maybe next time. If Nate makes it, it's got to be good...right? Still offering craw fish @ $4.99/lb, not in my repertoire, but saw several tables ordering 2-3 trays of this. Someone likes it I suppose.
As usual, service was 5 stars...Mike was a great server, very attentive and explained the several choices and their preparation.
Left satisfied with enough for lunch tomorrow; never can eat it all. YUM, tummy happy and taste buds satisfied!

It's another 5 star visit ! Woke up this morning craving Scallops, and the only place to go is… Read more »
This is the third time eating here and each time was excellent. Today I had the stuffed catfish.
It is a catfish fillet that is stuffed with a
Mixture of other seafood. I get the grilled veggies as my side.
A side note to the vegetarians out there. I am a meat eater but could make s meal out of just the grilled veggies. They rock.
I only give this four stars because it is a tad more expensive than the other restaurants I usually visit.
The best thing is the homemade hushpuppies and garlic bread. It comes warm and drizzled in butter in a silver dish. It's ooooohhhhh soooo yummy!!! Definately will clog every artery you have but hey you're going to eat southern cajun food!!!
I love the crawfish and the blackened catfish! Try it just once!
I promise you'll want more of the bread in the very least!
I gotta tell Sarah...it isn't a girl thing if you aren't impressed.
Nate's is not a bad place to go for seafood. Most of what you get is rather good. But there aren't enough "atta-boy's" to make up for the bad parts of the experience.
The first problem I came across is parking. I showed up around 7:30 or 8ish for dinner and parking is atrocious. 75% of the lot they have wired off for valet only. Maybe this is an Addison thing but I'm not about to pay someone to park my car 10-20 feet away from the door. I mean isn't the point of valet parking so you don't have to walk half a mile to the place? Making matters worse is the spot where Nate's is at have no u-turn signs on every intersection for a quarter mile in all directions and you can't escape them it seems. Finally, I had a moment of brilliance and ran around to park behind Dukes, which turned out great.
The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere. I wasn't nuts about the pink mood lighting but it works and you feel comfortable.
Service isn't bad either but nothing to rave about. They did the job for the most part but when we ordered our dish, we didn't get an extra plate (when you split a dish, don't you think that you'd offer that?)
The food on my visit was hit and miss. To start the night, we ordered up Shrimp Embrochette. Let me say right now do NOT order this! The shrimp are very small and it seemed to hide that fact they used a full strip of bacon to wrap them in. If you want to see Shrimp Embrochette done right, Papadoux's is the standard. But Nate's was not just disappointing but almost insulting; I wanted shrimp wrapped in bacon, not fried bacon wrapped around a small seafood piece of meat.
With that out of the way, me and my lady were decided we'll order a large plate and split it...so we got the steak and lobster. The menu states you get a 1 1/2 lb lobster and let me tell you, it's a biggie. I asked for a medium cooked NY strip and it came out perfect. This plate is easily enough for two or one hungry man. This was by far the most enjoyable part of my visit to Nate's.
I can't complain too much about the price because the food was well cooked and seasoned. I just have that sense that Nate's could be so much better if the little things were improved. I'll be back though I think...
I feel bad about giving this place 2 stars because I really liked the atmosphere and the bar area. Live band had the bar area rockin' and rollin' which I love. So let's put it like this:
Atmosphere: 4 Stars
Food: 2 at best, nothing special
Price: 1- I think we paid 25 bucks for maybe half a pound of crab legs. They weren't even King Crab legs, they were tiny and pathetic.
Service: maybe a 2, actually more like 1.5
Overall I would say, come here to drink and have a good time. Eat elsewhere...
The best crawfish you can find in the state.
After moved to CA, I still spend couple weekends to go back for the crawfish every year. It's even better than those in NO...
Ask for extra Turbo...
I've been going to Nate's for about 10 years now. Having spent a good deal of my life in SE Texas I think I've got a pretty good sense for Cajun/Creole cooking. I can always count on Nate's for a solid meal, with a few items that are spectacular. I will put their Fried Chicken, Fried Pickles and Chicken/Sausage Gumbo up against anyone. Their draft beer is ice cold and they have Abita Amber on tap. When I first started coming here it was .75 per icey mug. It's still a bargain at the current $1.50. I do wonder if they water it down though as I can burn through about 6 or 7 without feeling much of a buzz.
Nate has slowly crept his prices up on some items over the years and they border on ridiculous. And yes, at one time they attempted to charge for every plate of the bread/hush puppies beyond the first, but fortunately they quickly retracted after customer revolt.
Their C&S gumbo has a VERY dark roux, very smokey tasting. They are not quite as liberal with the meat as they used to be but it's still enough to fill you up. Unfortunately this is one of those items that's price has inched up to borderline absurd.
We usually start with the gumbo and a side of fried pickles. Unlike the gumbo the pickles are a great deal at around $5.00. I could drink the accompanying homemade ranch on its own. It is the thinner style ranch that is more buttermilk than mayo or sour cream. I've only found a couple of places that make ranch like I like it. One of the others in Dallas is Ozona.
Their chicken is fried to order and is always served piping hot, sometimes too hot to eat immediately. It comes with great hand cut fries that seem to be done properly which means to be double fried. The inside is soft while the outside is crispy. The dirty rice is out of this world. Some might think it is a bit sticky but I love it. If that wasn't enough, the dish comes with a side of vegetables. If you don't like your chicken fried they do a killer baked chicken. It takes 45 minutes so be prepared to wait, or order it as soon as you walk in the door.
I used to rotate around and get other dishes but I never found anything I was crazy about. The Cajun/Creole pasta was always pretty good but VERY heavy. The steak and seafood dishes are good too but not good enough to warrant me bypassing the chicken.
When it's crawfish season we'll usually get a couple of pounds of Turbo. It's perfectly seasoned and the crawfish at Nate's are usually on the large side for the Dallas market.
On the few occasions I've had to speak with Nate he's always been very pleasant and more than willing to spend a few minutes chatting. He's not around as often as he used to be but you'll know if he's there.
I've had Nate's Seafood before, but I had never been there during crawfish season. A friend of mine told me that since I was having a crawfish-eating binge, I should definitely make my way to Nate's Seafood. I took her advice and brought along a dozen of my friends.
As before-mentioned, I have recently been on a crawfish craze. I love crawfish, but a common complaint of mine is that the crawfish are usually too small. Not a problem here at Nate's. Before we started, they gave us garlic bread and hushpuppies to start. The bread was soggy in butter and the hushpuppies were puny, but keep in mind that these are complimentary and I'd rather have this than a loaf of dry rye with spreadable butter anyday. Nice start. I ordered the Calamari ($9) for my appetizer and it's a pretty impressive plate of squid. Big pieces that are lightly battered and fried. I was disappointed that there weren't any tentacles, but it was still very tasty. We ordered 3lbs. of crawfish ($4.95/lb.) and ordered some extra corn on the cob. As Fran mentioned, they charged us a pretty ridiculous amount for corn and potatoes ($4). Most places will charge you less than a dollar. I got a little sticker shock when I got the bill, but it was hard to be mad when I was so well fed. The corn on the cob is FRESH, which is a huge plus when most places boil frozen corn with their crawfish. Still, though, skip the corn and potatoes and save yourself some money for another pound of crawfish. Speaking of crawfish, they were big ones! The seasoning was a litlte weak, but the sheer size of these puppies made up for it. Try the tubo seasoning if you like it extra spicy.
All in all, Nate's is a favoite of mine for seafood. Sure, it's greasy and everything is fried or cooked with lots of butter, but it's darn good. Indulge and give into the deliciousness that is fried seafood!
Preston and wifey have been a crawfish kick and trying all kinds of places without me, so since I was in town for the weekend, we gathered friends and made a Sunday lunch date.
First off, I was starving. Also, the menu is huge & I didn't do any research prior. I was a 5 mins late and I guess everyone else was 5 mins early!
I munched on some of the very crunchy top, very oily bottom bread and super crunchy and small hush puppies. It was sad cuz I had hushpuppies the day before at Red Hot & Blue and they were really good. Nate's puppies didn't come close.
I went back and forth and finally ended up ordering 2 lbs. When the waitress took my order she simply said "separate check?" yes "corn & potatoes?" ok.
Finally our food comes and the crawfish is super salty, but decent sized. But only 2 small new potatoes and 1 piece of corn broken in halves.
I enjoyed my meal overall until I got the bill...$4.99 a lb for crawfish--fair price, but $3.95 for the starch? ARE YOU SERIOUS? I was pretty disappointed that those 2 little pieces of potato and corn ruined my entire meal and made it a huge RIP OFF.
I agree with Diana that it's way too dark in there and also we made an RSVP but they gave us an awkwardly shaped table :(
I've been going to Nate's for nearly a decade. But, I only go during crawfish season. The crawfish is the best I have ever had. The seafood gumbo is fantastic. I've only had better one other place.
(Crawfish season is generally from mid to late March through mid-May, April, of course, beng the sweet spot. This is when you will get the largest crawfish with the sweetest meat.)
During lunch time, Nate will come out and chat with the patrons, many of whom are regulars.
Weekend nights tend to be very crowded, to the point of annoyance, however.
Make sure to get "turbo" when you order crawfish. It won't be too hot for anyone who likes spicy foods. But, if you go all the way and suck the heads too, get ready to sweat a bit.
I've only ever tried one other item from the menu and that is the stuffed catfish. I request it blackened and it's quite good as well.
It's Father's Day and we're looking for a laid back place to grab lunch on this busy holiday.
Nate's Seafood and Steakhouse looks like just the place that won't break the budget and is family-friendly too. There's a slight wait for the dining area, but open seating for the bar area.
The four of us grab a table and the waiter swings by with menus. He also arrives with a platter of yummy buttery garlic bread and nice bites of hush puppies. (We immediately get a refill - the first one is free, after that, it's 95 cents a tray.)
First things first - an order of Fried Pickles ($4.95). It's my first time having them, and I find them just yummy! The dillness from the pickles really stand out and have a nice crunch still.
The BF and I order up two pounds of boiled crawfish ($5.99/lb) with turbo seasoning (25 cents/lb). It arrives in a platter and we dig in! It's pretty clean crawfish with some nice head juice too. The seasoning does add some nice needed heat to it as well.
Our friend orders the Fried Crawfish ($15.95) and it arrives with fries and two dipping sauces. It reminds me of fried clam strips or fried calamari.
The BF is tempted by the gumbo, but we're trying to save room for our big dinner that evening. As we leave, we overhear someone tell his friend, "The thing to get here is their gumbo..." Argh! Now we really wish we did!
Overall, 3.5 stars. Service was decent and the food we got was pretty good. Bottles of Shiner go for $3.50 each.
(Pics of our lunch is in the business profile!)
I am a Nate's first timer. Been hearing about the place ever since I moved to Texas and I finally went, husband and friends in tow last night and I have to say WOW, what a place. We had a place very similar in Everett, WA where I am from called Alligator Soul that I loved dearly. I don't have to pine for it anymore, Nate's is my new favorite Cajun hang out. I wanted to really get a feel for Nate's food and we had A LOT of it! We started off with some Oyster shooters...Mmmmm good! Then crawfish for all...no question there as to why Nate's is famous for their Mud-bugs! For we decided to do something out of the ordinary and try the Alligator po' boys and the fried frog's legs. I have had both alligator and frogs legs in the past and I have to say that Nate's could stand up to any of them. The frogs legs were fried to perfection and so very tender, talk about fall off the bone! The alligator had a ton more flavor than others I have had, a little tough but hey...thats alligator for ya. Even the fries and tartar sauce were worth taking notice of. I think the fries were batter dipped or something because they were tasty! And that tartar sauce (I am assuming made on site because of the quality and taste) was awesome. The true test will come next time when I try the gumbo...I am a huge gumbo snob, its got to be juuuuust right. AND THATS JUST THE FOOD. Our waiter was great, very friendly and kept the drinks flowing. The band playing that night was "Soul Revue" and they were amazing! We had a table close to the bar, tiny dance floor and band so we could eat a little, drink a little and then get up to dance in between. I also liked that you could have an expensive higher end meal ( like Pacific Swordfish, or King Crab legs@ about $22) a plate or you could go with cheaper down home fare (Catfish filets, shrimp creole, any of a variety of Po' boys @ $9-14). Definitely something there for everyone and really a great place to go if you have a group with different budgets. All in all I would have to say Nate's is one of the best places I have been for food, drinks and good live music in years. I can't wait to go back.
We had:
Complimentary Hushpuppies and bread
6 Oyster Shooter: $7.50
2lbs Crawfish @ 5.99/lb (i think...)
Frog-legs (came with 6 bigger than any others I've seen before as well as fries): $14.95
Alligator Po' boy (2 very large sandwiches on the plate and fries, my husband had a hard time finishing it!) : $9.95
And a completely inappropriate number of drinks for a Wednesday night :P
I have never been a fan of hush puppies, and to this day still hate them unless I'm at Nate's.. I'm not sure what it is about their's but, they are delish! I've only been a few times, but I eaten the fried pickles, yum~
the little crab finger thingys are awesome ~ I've had them both ways, in butter and garlic (sauce was right on) and I've had them fried.. not sure which way I liked better.
Not sure if they are doing it this summer, but on Sundays they have a karaoke thing going on... it's fun people watching
ok this is what im going to say.. First off, this is dallas.. be expected for the pricey dishes.. and yes it has a band.. so expect the loud music.. if people dont like that.. GO SOME WHERE ELSE.. Dont ruin our experience by complaining about it.. I think the band being loud is a great experience.. its good music and sets the mood perfectly! Everyone enjoys it! If you are looking for a place to be quiet and talk quietly to your company.. Dont go here.. or go the private area of the restaurant. But this is my favorite Cajun place in Dallas. You can seriously see the crawfish critters walking around the floor and see locals drinking their hearts away at the bar! The garlic bread is to die for and the CRAWFISH are great! The seasoning is very different but reminds me of something I would have in NOLA. Perhaps not the best gumbo in the world but very good. So over all I give this place 4 stars! I love it.. and I will go back every time I think about it.. So people, dont complain about the music because if this place was in NOLA, you would be complaining its not there! So come by this place and enjoy the music, food and great crazy drinks!
My standard order at Nate's has always been a Fried Shrimp Po' Boy, and while okay, it's nothing special. I finally tried the Mahi Mahi and it was much better, so no more Po'Boys for me! But, I still think of this as more of a Happy Hour type of place because it's the appetizers that are so good! Have you tried Fried Pickles before? If not, you can try them here. Definitely ask for seconds on the complimentary garlic bread and hush puppies, but I'll warn you they are a heart attack waiting to happen, as they sit in garlic butter! The service is decent, if not spectacular. But, it's worth coming in for a drink and some snacks or a dinner before a night of drinking.
Bleh, and double bleh.
My sister and I were dying to go here, so we finally went with my husband and his grandmom for a Sunday lunch.
First of all, it is way too dim. Beyond on what it should be...
Second, when we ordered the food came out in less than 5 minutes. Yes, I want fast service, but this was too fast, like fast food.
Third, it was just not that good at all. We ordered the seafood platter and it wasn't awesome. It was just okay.
And their gumbo (we got the chicken and sausage) was lukewarm and didn't have any kick to it.
My sister and I were needlessly to say very disappointed. Perhaps it's b/c we should have ordered the po boys or crawfish. But overall, I wasn't impressed at all.
Sorry, Nates, but I think I'll try someplace else for Cajun/seafood.
Order the gumbo. The roux is perfect. My bro-in-law is Cajun, and I cannot reproduce his gumbo, but Nate's is even better.
Almost docked two stars for the annoying honky tonk music, but the bread pudding made up for it.
I'm with Diana here. Maybe it's a girl thing.
The Fuzz and I were equally not impressed with Nate's. It was decent food, dare I say enjoyable, even, but nothing to squeal about.
And for the $13 or so I paid for the stuffed shrimp, I expected a little more than three shrimp, a small pile of tasteless rice, and a few pieces of vegetable matter. I'm all about the "real" sized portions (which is about a third of what chain restaurants serve), but only when the price and amount is balanced by sheer bliss of eating.
This was not one of those scenarios. Bear in mind, I can not speak for the crawfish, steaks, or po'boys. And I didn't even notice it was cajun....is that bad?
My husband and I drive from Bedford almost every Monday or Tuesday during crawfish season to eat at Nate's......awesome crawfish!! Matt and Eric are the best...always have the cold Shiner on the table before we even sit down...fried pickles are great...and the chicken sausage gumbo tastes like it was in South Louisiana.....if something's not right, they make it right without question...bar area can get smokey when crowded, but other than that, I highly recommend Nate's.

American Cuisine
Taken here by my friend during our visit to Dallas for her wedding. She took us here because it was a place she liked very much. She was right. It was very good food. Now I'm thinking in Texas, all you can get is great BBQ and steak, but you can get great everything. I had blackened shrimp which was simple but very good tasting, marinated perfectly and cooked just right. I tasted alligator for the first time in my life, a bit chewy but it didn't taste so bad. As always, if there is crawfish on the menu, that's what I'm having, and I ordered the etouffe along with sharing a large order of boiled crawfish. The crawfish etouffe was done very well, not salty as others I've had. Everyone else there enjoyed their meal and didn't have any complaints at all.
The food here is wonderful and it's a nice place hidden in a big shack. I like it here, inviting and friendly, and did I mention good food?
Funny thing is, at dinner, I didn't order any steak!
I like Nate's, good gumbo, good po boys. The whole family enjoys going there. The peel and eat shrimp are good as are the crab claws for an appetizer.
Reasonably priced as well considering the quality of the food.
Good live music, friendly bar tenders, good gumbo.
Prices are a little high, but I feel that you get a decent value for the money spent.
I love the atmosphere of the place, but it does tend to get awful loud in there.
I'd heartily recommend this place to anyone.
liquor after beer...i don't think that's the right order...
after spending several hours on the patio with great service (and i always notice service) i heard the faint sound of 'hey jude' playing inside, coming from the cover band band, which prompted me to order a round of happy shots as i like to call them, probably not the soundest thing to do after hours of beers, but oh wells.
happy hour prices are good, but leave after that! those shots broke the bank of annie :(
the appetizers where good and the service on the patio was spot on, specially with those small, quick to drink glasses...poor guy was runnin' all over the place....gotta get the cardio in...
Nate's is an outstanding cajun-style restaurant with a long track record of consistency. One of those places that reminds you why you avoid the chain restaurants. Very good crawfish with a turbo spice option. Love the fried crab finger appetizer. Love the snapper ponchatrain. Love the french fries. Nice bar, but it is a smoker's bar. Drinks are a bit light on content. Decor is pretty nice in a old-school sort of way. Crowd ranges the whole spectrum. Service can be very uneven though. A few years back was virtually thrown out of the bar (3 cop cars roared up!) when a gal at our table flipped out and broke a glass. :-)
BTW: Rumor has it a Nate's will be built in Allen, Texas!
Woo! Nate's!
Nate's was where my Cajun Food Virginity was lost. I've yet to go to Louisiana, but my husband assures me this is the real deal. I love the Redfish Ponchartrain. The hurricanes are delicious.
My one complaint is that it's in Addison, which means people are smoking out of every orifice at the bar. Each time I go to Nate's, I remember why I never dine in Addison.
I'm sorry, but I just ate at Nate's for the 1st time and I cannot believe how bad it was. The waiters were VERY friendly, but the food was horrible. I thought that in going to a seafood restaurant I could get something good and healthy-was I ever wrong! Not only did the broiled stuffed sole have zero flavor, it was pan fried in some crazy oil and it was overcooked at that. Then I kid you not, as I was sitting there waiting for my bill, there was a bug on the wall that literally jumped onto the table. I couldn't get out of there fast enough...no, I didn't complain-I wasn't looking for a free meal-just a healthy seafood dinner would have been nice. I will never go back to Nate's nor will I ever recommend it to anyone...sorry Nate's-that was absolutely disgusting from start to finish!
My Favorite Cajun Seafood restaraunt in the Dallas area. Interesting atmosphere. Good time for a default Fat Tuesday outting.
love nates ...jeffs burger is off the chain..fresh , flavorfull..love the seafood platters and broiled shrimp..Crawfish are good too.. great food, service, love the new one in allen as well
Well, one day I was at a club and a dude was tryin' to hit on me, as usual (i mean no suprise, i'm a 'hottie with a body'...lol)...but n-e whooo, he was building the usual club rapport...u know?...'what's your name?', 'do you come here often?' and 'where you from?" To the latter question I answered, 'LOUISIANA'...he then did something unusual and referred me to a spot that cooks up some great, authentic louisiana grub...There is free valet service (don't let the valet make you think it's a ritzy joint or nothing...lol)it's just convienent since it's a buzzing eatery)The place is really cozy, wood floors and kinda feels like a captain ship with dim lighting but cooler...The chicken and sausage gumbo is great and comforting, the pasta's are rich and creamy, the lobster is emaculate and cheap and the drinks are stiff (got really throwed off a couple of long islands...lol) SOMETIMES AROUND 6ISH a band plays with a singer and it really adds to the down south decor...The waiting staff are ALL really cute and friendly, each time I go the owner comes out and asks, 'how's everything?' I THINK THAT'S PRETTY COOL...DEFINITELY A SPOT TO TAKE THE FAMILY, A GROUP OF HOMMIES OR HOMMETTES or just chillax at the bar and watch a cold play concert on a dvd...THANKS ALOT GUY AT THE CLUB WHO I GAVE THE WRONG NUMBER TO, I REALLY FEEL BAD ABOUT DOING THAT TO YOU...if i had it to over again...um, (can't lie) probably would do it again.lol (so mean, huh? dang, i swear i'm a nice person)
Some of the best and most authentic cajun-style seafood in Dallas.
