Review from Laura S.
This reminds me of Izzy's Deli but BETTER. This place actually has good customer service and accepts credit card :D WIN.
They have free pickles! :D I don't eat pickles but they had the Asian kind that tastes like cucumber too! So I ate that one while my friend at the American kind... I stick to the Asian pickles. Ohhhh yeah...
When you enter, it's like a old school Italian/Jewish diner. You sit in a booth and order from a nice older waitress. Very nice.
The h and the f in the menu means h=half order, f=full order... I thought it meant f=fries, h=... I dunno what it meant. But you do get fries with your order.
FOOD:
I got the HALF black forest ham sandwich on wheat and skinny fries. Pretty good. It's a simple sandwich I could had made but you're paying for the ambiance and someone else making it. The fries was good. It was a meal that made me feel full.
SERVICE:
Nice lady.
You need to go up to pay tho.
PARKING:
They have lots around the area.
AMBIANCE:
Old school classy old diner.
OVERALL:
I'd come back if I feel like something simple :) -

A typical diner. The must have is their Matzo Ball Soup.
This place is not going anywhere. Although Larry King does not frequent this place as much as his own new breakfast joint (Boston Bagel Co.) you still feel his presence there. -

The best damn pastrami sandwiches.
If you're window shopping in Beverly Hills, this is the place to go for lunch. It's very affordable. It's very high quality. It's delicious. It's casual. It's laid back. It hasn't changed its look or vibe since it opened whenever ago.
Don't get your expectations up too high for the place. I mean, it is just a deli serving deli food. Nothing too exciting. Nothing fancy.
It's really all about the pastrami sandwiches. Try the New York one. They slice their meat nice and thick. The coleslaw is just right. Perfect combo.
So give this place a try! Like I said, it's nothing fantastic inside. The service is ok. The environment is ok. Everything is just "ok". But the pastrami sandwiches.... are so so so good. -

Yum, Yum! Been here many times and Love the omelets for breakfast and the sandwiches for lunch. The place is always packed but we usually don't have to wait too long for a table. The staff are a great group, some have been there for many years. Park in one of the many 2 hour free structures and take a walk, and check out the AMAZING shops in the area after your meal.

Review from Katie S.
People who go to Nate 'n Al have bubbies, speak the occasional Yiddish phrase (What a kvetch your mother is), and talk loudly. These people are my family.
I was reared on the teat of Nate 'n Al. I have religiously observing passover with their matzo brei. It is old-school in a land where everything is old-school. There is something very exciting about watching my grandfather kibitz with the Beverly Hills locals and the most favorite patron, Larry King.
The deli and pickled fish are particular standouts. I live for the matzo brei. Yummy yearound. It is kind of like a matzo pancake. It is unleaven delish! Also, the make great platters to go!
The sandwiches are piled high. I swear the same waitress I had when I was three, still works there and always serves my grandfather's table. In a city that has marked vastness and vapid people, Nate 'n Als is the greatest of Delis to kibitz, eat and be merry. They create a family and a distinctive atmosphere. It is to be experienced, and if you are ever there say hi to my grandparents ... they are the loud and opinionated ones.
In the deli wars, this one is my pick! -

Wow - 4 1/2 years since I wrote about N & A? Still tasty after all these years.
Though I've certainly been back between my original review visit, I'm not sure I'd returned to my old staple for breakfast: the whitefish n onion scramble. Still, it is through-the-roof recommended. They offer onions, too, so say yes there. Instead of potatoes, I've now switched to tomatoes, which were modest, but fresh and decent sized. With all this, I still couldn't completely eat my bagel. I came in ravenous, too. NOTE: They will toast your bagel unless you request otherwise. (And no, that is not a euphemism.)
The surprise here this time for me was the coffee. So many other places in the genre have ok-to-lame coffee, but I really loved the coffee today and more than I recall here. QUIRKY BEVERAGE NOTE: In fact, the coffee was as hot as possible, and the ice-water (my drink of choice) couldn't have been colder. I loved that attention to detail.
Since my first review, they have improved the mens' room considerably. No longer dank, no longer as cramped as an airplane's. And, as so much of the world has caught on, they now have the Baby Changer Station in the men's room, too.
Great people watching. Awesome mix of suits and sweats; of iconoclasts and of families. So glad to come back here.Listed in: Ten Great Breakfasts, Old Deli Belly & Bagels

Review from Aaron F.
It is Christmas night and your Jewish. You really only have limited options, you can get Chinese food or deli food. For the past few years I would drive around the South Bay or Long Beach with my Asian friend looking for what is open. I know insert your Jew and Japanese searching for food on Christmas but I digress.
We called around and found out Nate 'n Al was open, score! When we arrived, they had a line out the door. Luckily it was just two of us so we only waited for a few minutes before being seated.
I was so excited to go here I had to get a potato knish that came with a side of gravy? The knish was cooked just right and came out piping hot. It tasted even better being dipped into the gravy.
For my main meal a full honey maple turkey sandwich that came with russian dressing. For the side I ordered potato salad. The sandwich is HUGE. You should only order this if you are really hungry. The sliced turkey was cut thinly and stacked great. It even needed to be held together by a toothpick.
My buddy ordered matzo ball soup which he enjoyed thoroughly. The broth tasted like it might actually have been made rather than canned.
My only complaint is that I had to flag down our waitress several times for napkins, silverware, refill my water and the check. I'll give her a break since it was jammed and they most likely were short on staff.
This is a great deli but I just wish they were closer. -

TO be honest this place is ok.
The service is ok
the people are ok
everything is kind of just overhyped in my opinion.
HOWEVER. What does save the day are the pastrami sandwhiches. Primarily the New York. Now this here sandwich is THE best pastrami sandwhich i had of yet, and blends perfectly with the cole slaw. If there is any reason to come its because of this sandwich. -

There's no better rye bread in town. Their soups are delicious and not too salty. If you order a hot dog, get the "special." They don't make them any better than that.

Nate 'n Al is ran by a super-genius.
Best takeout delivery I've experienced thus far.
From the online ordering system to the timely delivery.
Burgers, fries and french toast are top notch, can't wait to explore the menu further.
Don't waste your time with Factor's Famous Deli, overpriced mediocre food. -

Rubber eggs, immense amounts of butter, cardboard toast, watered down coffee and waitresses in hairnets. That pretty much sums this place up.
Try Jack & Jill's down the street if you are looking for a good breakfast cause you won't find it here. -
Review from Amy H.
There is something about having a proper deli amid the otherwise ritzy Beverly Hills, it's such a tradition.
This place is almost always full, they seem to base their existence on repeat customers.
Their food is spot on, space is just what you would imagine and the waiters got that chutzpah.
If you are looking for fine dining, go away. If you are a judgmental putz, go away.
I will say, I get something different from my 3 favorite delis - this ones has the best lunchy options. -

I'll admit it, i'm not jewish. I'm not even close. I'm a blonde catholic girl from the south.... but i'll tell you what, i know my jewish delis! I love the pastrami and matzaballs and well, in my humble gentile opinion Nate 'n Al's has everything necessary to be trump other delis around.
to be a successful Jewish Deli/Restaurant you need the following
1. a deli space showing all your delicious (and conspicuous) meats.
2. a haggle of 1970's brown booths packed in.
3. young pretty hostesses / older women servers who have been slinging pastrami since before you were born (hell, before your parents were born)
4. Amazing huge sandwhiches that will cost you in excess of 15 bones
5. patrons who are 100% judging you for the way you order, what you order, what you wear, who you're with, what you're talking about, where you sit, how long it takes you to eat, and..... etc etc etc
I'm sure if you're reading this you've probably been to langer's and brents, and honestly, i know its risky saying this but i think Nate 'n Al's trumps both!
While all three have the first 3 things, NnA's squeaks out on #4 - amazing sandwiches. Normally when you go to a deli you order and like it, but i personally am southern and want to modify a little bit i want a hot pastrami sandwich but with coleslaw instead of sauerkraut. normally when i order this they refuse to make it warm (bc of the slaw) so i either have to get it cold or with slaw on the side... at NnA's they didn't fight me on it, the lovely woman (who my roommate and i affectionately named "gran") said no problem and brought it with a smile. It was delicious and amazing and we apologized to "gran" and asked for some dessert despite we didn't finish our fries. Warm apple strudel ala mode. real filo dough with apples and grapes and YUM.
Check it out, seriously, its so worth it! -

I've been to Nate n Al a few times in the past. The food has always been decent, but not amazing. I ordered an Turkey Ruben and a potato knish on the most recent trip. The potato knish was pretty good, however, the Turkey in the sandwich was a little dry and the sauerkraut was not very flavorful. The Turkey Ruben from Canter's Deli tasted much better. The waitress forget one of the items we ordered, she was very apologetic and fixed the bill right away.
The atmosphere here is pleasant with an nostalgic charm from the 50's. The staff's very nice as well. It's still a nice place to be if you're in the center of Beverly Hills and don't feel like spending a lot of money on your meal. I'll still come back to this place if I'm in the neighborhood. However, I think I'll stick with one of the omelettes, which they are pretty good at, next time. -
Review from Roland L.
I would rather drive to Beverly Hills and have a pastrami sandwich at Nate 'n Al's than go to that place by MacArthur Park, what's that place called that begins with an "L"? Oh, Langers, that's right. My memory escapes me sometimes!
if you ever shop in BH, do yourself a favor and park in one of those 2 hr Free Parking Lots. There are 3 on Beverly Dr. alone! There's no need to aggravate yourself, fighting for a metered parking spot.
I walked in at 12:30 and was seated in 20 minutes. Not bad, all things considered. Ordering was a cinch and service was quick and attentive. Food did take some time to arrive, but that's what you get when you eat out during the height of lunchtime! I had my heart set on a Pastrami Reuben Sandwich with Fries and a Bowl of Chicken Matzo Ball Soup with Noodles.
Pastrami Reuben Sandwich: 4/5
If you want tasty pastrami, go to Nate 'n Al's, where pastrami taste like pastrami, unlike Langers which tastes like corned beef. The pastrami was lean enough, but still had an acceptable amount of fat. I also must say that the sauerkraut is better here than Langers. Langers only advantage is their pastrami serving was a little more generous. Nate 'n Al's rye was toasty and buttery delicious.
Fries: 4/5
I am a HUGE fan of steak fries and these certainly did not disappoint! There were so soft and hot in the center with a ever so light crisp texture. Some pieces possessed soft exterior, but that was alright. My only beef was with the stingy serving.
Chicken Matzo Ball Soup with Noodles: 4.5/5
Amazing! Nice chicken flavor that doesn't sock you in the face. Perfectly salted soft noodles. A delicate matzo ball aptly commands your undivided attention with each spoonful. This is such a simple, well balanced soup. Loved it!
Too bad I got full. I was considering adding the Corned Beef and Cabbage! Oh well, I guess I'm just gonna have to come back for that.
In closing, I prefer Nate 'n Al's over Langers and Canters to satisfy my pastrami cravings. There is only one 'local' deli that serves better pastrami, and that deli happens to be Brent's in Northridge. Sorry that's too far for me! ;^)Listed in: These Are A Few Of My Favorite…

Los Angeles, CA
As far as a delis goes, it's just okay. I like that there are a lot of regulars and that the waiters and hostess are very friendly. i wish that there was more of a waiting room because it gets very busy around peak eating hours and people are crammed into a corner. The potato pancakes were decent, but I think I'm a bit partial to my family's version. I got the tuna melt on rye which was good, again I've had better. If I'm looking for a deli I may come back here but it won't be my first choice.

It's like the breakfast restaurants in Chicago but in the heart of Beverly Hills.
I fell in love with Nate and Als!
I had the standard bacon and eggs, onions in the hash browns and a toasted bagel.
Deelish!!!
THe prices aren't Beverly Hill-ish either, although they are So Cal prices.
Lots of regulars, and long standing waitresses (yes, they were actual waitresses as opposed to servers at this place)
Really goods strong coffee too!
And it didn't hurt that Jessica Alba and family were sitting across from us.
She is even more stunning in person! -

I'm conflicted with my rating right now. Conflicted because while the food was okay, I loved the experience I had here! Its a classic diner and I felt like I was walking into a movie from the 70s. The waitress was extremely nice and we had great service!
I got the pastrami sandwich with potato salad. I'm not exactly sure if I ordered the wrong thing or not but I thought it was a little plain for $13. The rye bread was delicious though and the meat was tasty but I wish that there were other things in the sandwich (but I have a feeling there was a different pastrami sandwich that would have satisfied me better). I loved the potato salad (but I am a sucker for any potato salad).
I think its a place that everyone in LA should check out at least once and I look forward to coming here again, and maybe I'll change my review after I try out different things on the menu! -

There are already so many reviews of this restaurant but I think I should still put in a good word for the Beverly Hills classics. Nate and Als is a traditional deli where you can get a variety of dishes and deli meats/sandwiches at the restaurant or to go.
If you eat at the restaurant, expect a simple family place. You can have a plate of pickels while you decide what you are going to eat. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
For breakfast, their French toast is great but my all time favorite dish here is by far the stuffed cabbage. I also love a nice turkey or roast beef sandwich from time to time (and they are generous with the meat).
You can come in for a quick bite. Service is prompt assuming there is not a wait for a table. -

I read several of the reviews of this place. I can say that I was not impressed.
Food was not good had a pastrami sandwich asked for sauerkraut to go on it ( was given COLD sauerkraut) It did not taste great..
Service was below average it appears that the people that work there do not want to be there...
For the price I would rather go to Langers (SP)... -

Meh. I don't like it as much as others. I guess that Canter's is my choice for a deli. I wanted to like it...but it was pretty average. I had your standard eggs and toast breakfast. I think I need to go back and try a sandwich before I finalize my opinion.

When I go to L.A. and I need deli, the Matzoh Ball and Pastrami/Corn Beef doesn't fail. The crowd is authentic (ha! this is Bev Hills!) and you will always see someone you recognize.

The borscht tastes pretty canned. Not too much on the menu for the gluten free crowd...I ordered a platter of tongue, thought it was a little steep in price. Old school vibe for sure. -

What to say? One of my 'go to' places when I go to LA. It always brings makes me nostalgic since I would go as a kid....and the fact that the decor hasn't changed a bit helps keep that nostalgia alive!
This past time I went for breakfast and had a great egg white omelet. Love their rye bread and their homemade jam (needs to be asked for). I also appreciate that they sell rugelach in many varieties that don't all have walnuts. The chocolate chip version was great. -

Beverly Hills, CA
One of the top 5 delis in Los Angeles. Nate 'n Al has the BEST rye bread and deli meats out of all the good delis in LA. Best pastrami, corned beef and turkey in town. Their side dishes are also amazing!
Their bagels and cream cheese are not great, and their restaurant food (burgers, salads, pastas, etc.) are also not the best. The latkes are also not as good as I've had from other local delis.
Get the pastrami or corned beef sandwich... maybe some chicken noodle soup and a side of potato salad (my favorite). Also they have a stuffed cabbage appetizer that is incredible!
They also have surprisingly fresh fruit juices. When I order a grapefruit or orange juice, the guy goes to the back and makes it FRESH and it is really delicious.
In other words, GREAT NOSH! -

Ok Guys! This is my all time favorite deli restaurant in LA. Everytime I step into this place it's like being back at home in New York. The place feels, looks like, and smells like NY. The food is always excellent and consistent. I don't know how much somebody who has never been to a deli in NYC would truly enjoy this place but for us ex-New-Yorkers who get home sick from time to time, Nate 'n Al is always a quick fix that won't take a 6 hour flight to get to. I love this place.

Review from Amir H.
Mission Viejo, CA
When I went to New York City, I got caught up in the hype of Katz's Deli, assuming that it was going to be the most heavenly deli experience I would ever encounter. It wasn't. Sure, the pastrami was great but the entire experience seemed disproportionate to the amount of time I used up traveling to Katz's during my limited stay in NYC. As far as I was concerned, I was satisfied never visiting a deli again.
Well, a good friend of mine invited me to Nate 'n Al's one day, and my interest in delis was resurrected. Thankfully, LA seems a prime spot to continue exploring delis, considering the prominence of Canter's Deli, for example.
Moving on, Nate 'n Al's interior is unsurprisingly evocative of a regular diner -- in stark contrast with its posh Beverly Hills surroundings.
I ordered a pastrami on rye and an egg cream, and I really appreciated the complementary pickles they brought out, particularly the new pickles. Those were a pleasant surprise that were additional charges at Katz's. The egg cream was also delightful. I can easily imagine young kids loving the awesome concoction of chocolate syrup, milk, and soda water. It's essentially a diner version of YooHoo without any weird ingredients.
Finally, no complaints about the pastrami on rye. Katz's may not have been my favorite experience, but their pastrami was delicious , and it is delicious at Nate n' Al's. My bill ended up in the neighborhood of $15, which might seem outrageous but I definitely left full. Let's just say delis should be a once in awhile experience. -

This place has class. Very crowded. A lot of international customers. And clean.
I had the pastrami onion omlette with the hash browns and rye toast. It was a little pricey but in you are in Beverly Hills (Dah).
I would go back because big portions, tasty, and met my expectations. -

New York, NY
Eh. For a Jewish deli in the heart of Beverly Hills, this is not the best Jewish deli food I have ever tasted. Corned beef is tasty, but Brent's Delicatessen in Northridge is way better. Cole slaw is average along with the potato salad. Most importantly, the pickels are not very tasty.
Brown wooded panels and brown booths fill the room. A group of old men sit and have lunch together, getting there Jewish fixings. This must be there weeekly hangout. This place truly does have character. This place looks straight out of the 1970s. Brady Bunch anyone?
This deli is a Beverly Hills establishment. It has been here for many years, and has definitely become a part of Beverly Hills history. So, being the historian I am, I do value this establishment. It's nice to know a business can still be so popular after so many years. -

I've been coming here for 25 years and the food is as good today as it was when I would sit next to the likes of Lew Wasserman and Dean Martin. EVERYONE loved Nate n Al's and the reason is they serve the best food on the planet! The pastrami is unforgettable (try the Reuben) and the turkey sandwich (with coleslaw on the sandwich) is a killer. For a real treat, have the house chef salad and ask them to "chop the hell out of it"... best dressing ever!

Review from Ethan S.
Nate 'n Al's really felt like a good Jewish Deli, and it is.
It is always crowded, so be sure to call and make a reservation in advance.
We were seated quickly, though, and our sever was great. She got our orders in right away, and we got our coffee fast. Throughout the meal, our coffee mugs never got below 1/3 empty; they were very good about refilling.
I got the Larry King matzah brei, which was fantastic. Not at all greasy or fattening, but it still filled me up beyond belief. Then again, the portion was fit for at least 2 adults. It comes with small cups of cinnamon sugar and apple sauce. The apple sauce was a great accompaniment, and the sugar sweetened it up. It was slightly dry, but I think that's just how it is with only egg whites (Larry King style) and the apple sauce fixed the minor problem anyway.
The ambiance is classic old diner style, and the booths are great.
There are so many regulars here, and even if you're not, they treat you like one. If you get lucky, maybe you'll see Larry here himself, and tell him you love his matzah brei!Listed in: Good Restaurants

OK, I promise that this will be my last update, unless there is some radical change from the fabulousness that is Nate 'n Al. Great deli food-check. Killer location with excellent apres meal shopping opportunities-check. Reasonable prices, especially for Beverly Hills-check. Chance of seeing a celeb and people watching that is a show in itself-check. For breakfast or lunch, this spot has everything.
Last Saturday, it was such a gorgeous day we decided to make the hour drive up for lunch and shopping. My New Year's resolution was to try more new places, but I was not going up to LA and missing my potato pancakes. Or my corned beef and swiss on rye. Or my matzo ball soup.
I overheard the hostess all in a tizzy (and by the way, she works her butt off-taking names, seating, clearing tables, picking stuff up off the floor from messy customers- all with a smile) over someone at table 35. Nosy person that I am, I of course had to know which table was 35 and who was there. Just a short, buff guy. That's the best you can do, I asked? Well, she did just get her picture with Matthew McConaughey. More like it, sister!2 Previous Reviews: Show all »
