The Naro is everything an art cinema should be in terms of showing great films AND they're actively engaged in the community , hosting a slew of great events.
The First Look Film Forum http://narocinema.com/... brings regional premieres and great discussion on Sunday mornings. I happily make the drive from Williamsburg for it.
I have to agree that I do like the Naro. It was the first movie theater in the Hampton Roads area to show Milk.
It's your traditional Indy theater so you'll be able to find movies shown here that aren't likely shown anywhere else. They don't have a wide selection of movies at any one time since it's a relatively small theater, but they generally switch out their movies often.
This theater is the anchor of Colley Avenue. If you're ever in the area or if you just get bored check out a movie inside. It's a small theater with one screen and a classic feel. The red velvet curtain helps. Usually smaller/indie films are playing and just about once a month they'll have Rocky Horror Picture Show playing. They do get some mainstream films in as well. I usually like to stop by the Ten Top across the street before a movie to get something good to eat too.
After a week at the ocean, we found ourselves wasting away at the mall, trying to figure out how to kill the rest of the rainy day before our late flight back to SF. Google mobile and the staff of The Naro to the rescue. Found the theater's listing and then called and spoke with an honest to gosh employee who gave directions which began with the question of which of the mall's parking garages were we parked in.
Great older movie house in neighborhood that must be near a liberal arts college--I could be wrong, but I don't think the majority of Norfolk neighborhoods are quite so spotted with natural food markets and crunchy coffee houses.
Love it! The Naro is great! Tickets are now $8, but the snacks and drinks are reasonably priced. Brownies, cookies, homemade baklava, etc. from 1.50 to $3.
It's little theatre. The people are super nice, it's never really crowded and they show movies that generally don't play at a big cineplex. If it weren't for the Naro Norfolk would never get some great films!
Love, love, love NARO! I've even blogged about it. Last movie we saw was: http://mgblankenship.b... I always buy ticket books and suggest you do, too!
The Ghent area of Norfolk grew around the Naro. The only restaurant back in the 70's when the Naro was getting rolling was Intermission; right next door. All of the subsequent success that has occurred in Ghent owes a debt to the Naro.
With that said, this is a great art house theater. A renovation has given us comfortable seats and an epic sound system. The concession stand serves things like Baklava! If you get the chance try the film series. A hosted discussion will follow a great movie. I saw Monsoon Wedding, for example, and an Indian professor lead a discussion on arranged marriages after the film. Terrific stuff.
People do not talk during the movies here. Need another reason to come?
The Naro is simply one of the best things in Hampton Roads; any category.
If something bad ever happens to this place I will cry and sit on its doorstep wailing about the atrocities of corporate entertainment until they drag me away. Then I will come back and cry more.
That's how much I love them!
The Naro shows a variety of movies, the staff is extremely nice, and it's in a great area. Plus, they have live Rocky Horror Picture Show performances which are AMAZING.
The Naro is a great place to go and spend an evening. It's a nice small, cozy theatre that runs a lot of movies hard to find elsewhere. Buying a ticket book helps to save 2 dollars off the price of a ticket too. And they even sell baklava at the concession stand!
Pair this up with a dinner at the No Frill Bar and Grill which is just around the corner and you have a great evening lined up.
The Naro is a fun, old, one screen theatre. The seating is comfortable, the screen and sound are decent and the environment is great. The concessions are inexpensive and the price of a movie there was (when I went) only $7.
From what I hear, it's hardly ever full so you won't need to buy tickets in advance.
Love it; the best part of Ghent. The theatre plays films that might not be playing in places like AMC or Regal, which I love. And the rental store has lots of hard-to-find movies!
It is a small cute and old theater that sits on Colley Ave. I went there for the Rocky Horror Show and I had fun, because the people in there were amazing. I have yet visit this place for the other shows, but I trust it that it will still be fun.
Great art house theater, comfortable seats, delicious concessions and good prices. I've seen many films here that I probably wouldn't have had access to otherwise. We even saw Creature From The Black Lagoon in 3-D here. It's a really cool place.
