Naniwa
3 reviews for Naniwa
I had the miso butterfish (black cod) set here. Came with an appetizer for that day, it was marinated seaweed salad, miso soup and dessert for a pricey (IMO) $34. I was actually feeling like a bowl of udon noodles or something to that effect but alas the menu here was pretty limited and their rolls and sashimi etc are fairly pricey.
Nevertheless, the cod was really good. I actually eyed someone having it and it looked so good that I decided to go with that for my dinner order.
My friend had the ahi tuna salad and it was a gigantic serving, beyond our expectations. So it was really good value for money for that particular dish I must say. Very fresh greens and lovely salad. Just that I'm not an ahi fan.
When dessert came (I was the only one having it since I ordered the set), we were pleasantly surprised to see a whole bowl or green tea ice cream presented before us. I noticed that previous patrons who ordered the set had only 1-2 scoop of ice cream each. The waitress was such a dear to triple our serving size and served it with 3 spoons for the 3 ladies at our table. So thoughtful and the green tea ice cream was HEAVENLY! We loved it so much.
For my last night in Kauai, I really wanted some sushi but didn't feel like venturing too far away so I figured I'd try my hotel's sushi place. The two rolls I had (spicy tuna and california) were actually pretty good and the fish was very fresh. The service was laughably horrible and the atmosphere is rather lacking. Naniwa is stuck in a small little room at the end of the Shells dining area (the other restaurant at the Sheraton). It is super cramped and feels like a hole in the wall. Given the price of my meal, I would have expected much nicer atmosphere and considerably better service. This is the sort of place that I wouldn't visit again, even if I was staying at the Sheraton.
Located deep in the catacombs of the dreary Sheraton's mall-like restaurant court, this disappointing excuse for a sushi restaurant made takeout from Safeway look like a fine alternative. Meanwhile, our cheap rental car offered a more inviting ambiance. The tuna, yellow tail and salmon were all aggressively bland. The service was uninspired, although they were pretty quick with the beers, which was appreciated and easily earned them a star.
