I'm not a Vietnamese cuisine connoisseur by any means, but this place was yummy and VERY cheap. I ordered the broken rice with the pork chop (comes with egg, some sort of quiche, fish noodles? i have no clue)...I think it's com tam dac biet I have no idea. It was tasty for the most part, wasn't quite digging the noodles. But they really do give you a lot of food for maybe $6.

I've heard a lot of good things about Nam Phuong so I'll probably be back more often to sample other dishes.

The problem with living near the row of Southeast Asian restaurants that stretch along Washington Ave is that you walk by them every day on your way to work, or to your favorite neighborhood gastro-pub and you say, "Man, that place looks interesting. I should really take advantage of these unique eateries so close to my apartment, because not everyone is fortunate enough to have such a variety of restaurants in their hometown, much less within walking distance." And then you keep walking, because it's just easier that way.

Nam Phuong is one of those unassuming places, but once you just man up and walk in, you kind of want to slap yourself for not having gone sooner.

My wife received a gift certificate from some sort of silent auction to this place, and we went for lunch one afternoon during the week. The pho was delicious, second only to a hole-in-the-wall joint I once frequented in North Denver. Their pork and shrimp summer rolls could be their own meal, if you order enough of them (I think I would need 6-8 to be full, but I am also crazy). The wide variety of noodle and rice dishes offer not only a great reason to keep coming back, but an excellent primer on Vietnamese cuisine.

And did I mention this place is cheap as sin?! When we went for lunch and tried to use the certificate, it brought our bill down to below their credit card minimum ($10). So what did we do? Paid the very reasonable bill without the certificate and came back three days later with two friends to use it properly, that's what. Two people can enjoy a very delicious and filling lunch for less than $20, can do dinner for less than $30 (and that includes a couple of Asian beers, as well).

Bottom line: Great food, very helpful and quick waitstaff, unbelievable prices and a very nice interior. Whether you're going for a quiet (and highly economical) date or getting together 8-10 of your closest friends, this is an excellent and unique place to go as an alternative to the usual.

A cautionary tale for any thinking of doing take out:

If you're home sick recovering from a particularly nasty cold (not swine flu) and your hubby gets take out pho from Nam Phuong for you, and you happen to really like housin sauce in said pho... look first, before you dump the take out container of sauce into your soup. Because there may just be sriracha in that housin sauce, and you may not notice until you've slopped a big mouthful of noodles in your mouth. And you may then feel like your face has blown off... but your stuffy nose might just be cleared =P

Still my favorite place for pho, perfect place for a damn-i-don't-feel-like-cooking lets-a-cheap-dinner night. I just specifically ask for sriracha-free housin now. Live and learn.

i'm in love. i've been to a lot of vietnamese restaurants in this city which most are the same pho, summer rolls, broken rice but this place has a wide variety of stuff and it's very affordable, plus free parking when you can find it!. It's hard to tell the difference between places but I think if you want to try new stuff and have authentic vietnamese food this is the place to go! I'm definitely going back and trying their other vietnamese items. The service is pretty decent for asian places (we're not known for our politeness).

Being allergic to both peanuts and shellfish vietnamese food is a minefield, but what I can eat, i LOVE! This place seems very authentic. The food is spicy and delicious. I ordered bbq pork summer rolls, split curry duck soup with my mom and lemongrass, curry and coconut milk chicken. Everything I ate was delicious! Although they catered to my allergies, the service wasn't exactly friendly.

Stop here once each year for lunch while dropping my daughter off to Rock School for Dance just up the street - the menu is huge, plenty of tofu dishes, had chicken with ginger and onions - great, tofu in Lemongrass sauce - great.  Lot's of asians - very few occidentals - makes me feel like I've stumbled into a real locals' place - wait staff is generally fast and responsive - prices are cheap!
Next time - ooh, do I try another Vietnamese restaurant in the neighborhood or come back to Nam Phuong?  Decisions. Decisions.

Go-to to-go for pho.

Pros: Excellent food, pretty good for carry-out.  Service, as others has said, is quite rapid,

Cons: I've had a few sub-par delivery meals from them, but at least some portion of this I attribute to my own ordering-- if it's made how it's supposed to taste, probably shouldn't be the restaurant's fault if you don't like it.

Absolutely top notch on cheap food.

I used to go to this place all the time when I lived in south philly.  The menu is huge, but I've enjoyed everything I've tried.

I'm a little pasty white guy and, well, I'm not saying the waitstaff is racist, but I have gotten noticeably quicker service when I show up with asian friends.  Just an observation ;)

Try the Vietnamese iced coffee for a cool and delicious summer treat!

The vegetarian summer rolls and a cold Sapporo are as good as it gets. The ice pearl milk tea is a nice follow up for anyone with a sweet tooth, as is the taro bubble tea. Highly recommended given that everything comes out quick, and the service is great. Not the biggest vegetarian selection, but everything I've had so far has been well worth the walk and the price.

Do they ever use the stage?

This is my new favorite eatery.  Where else can I listen to elevator music and eat Jicama rolls?  Ohhhh, Jicama rolls.  Probably as close as I can get to culinary heaven!  I also highly recommend the crab and noodle soup; it's very hearty.  Vietnamese-style iced coffee is to die for, and if you happen to visit in the evening, they have a nice area of beer and alcohol.

**One disappointment-they DON'T deliver!!  Boo!! Step your game up, Nam Phuong!!

i love this place! the dining area is spacious, so even during the restaurant's peak hours (saturday dinnertime), the wait is never for more than 5 minutes. The service is FAST. If you order the pho, it usually comes out instantaneously after you order. The food is the best Vietnamese food I've tried in Philly.

Try: Banh hoi bo nuong la (summer rolls with beef in grapeleaves that you roll yourself), khoai mon tran chau (taro bubble tea!)

I am eating the leftovers of the chicken/eggplant/bean deliciousness from last night while I write this and, yes, it is delicious and oily.  In fact, now that I'm not as inebriated, it seems a little too oily.

Anyway, the experience there was good.  They had seating for our party of 8 and generally, although curt, the service got the job done.

And now, back to the deliciousness.

Large Vietnamese / Chinese restaurant along Washington, this place has two entrances, one from the plaza, another from 11th.

The eggplant - tasty, and garlic sauce wasn't bad at all. The duck shredded in noodle soup - skip it. The special pho was okay, although lacked much flavor in the broth. The Chinese water spinach with garlic was good, albeit everything was really oily...

Well, I am no expert of Vietnamese food but I truly enjoyed my first visit to Nam Phuong.  I have lived around the corner from this restaurant for the past year and finally experienced the cuisine the other night.  So we ordered some take out.  We had spring rolls, vermicelli, and fried noodles with seafood.  It was all so tasty and truly authentic. The service was quick and kind. The price was extremely reasonable as well.  Next time I would like to sit in the restaurant because the atmosphere seemed real fun.

I'm admittedly not super experienced with Vietnamese cuisine, but that's mostly because this was the first place I ate it and it was so perfect that I haven't really been tempted to go anywhere else. The pho broth is so decadent and not overly salty and I could probably eat 50 of the BBQ pork rolls. Most of the standard stuff like Vietnamese crepe and vermicelli is also fantastic. Also crucial: super fast table service, convenient take-out (although bummer on no delivery), they take credit cards, and serve booze. One con is that the parking lot is super wild but that's my fault for attempting to drive there.

Enormous Goi Cuon rolls, followed by the best Pho Tai I've had on the East Coast. Their Flan for dessert is also a nice dark creme brulee. Perfect accompaniment to a bitter, flavorful Cafe Sua Da. Makes me miss Cali. I would not visit Philly without dropping by here. $15 minimum for credit cards.

have been here numerous times as it is really the best family style dinner place for vietnamese food in philadelphia.  We always get the pre set family style dinner either for 4 people or 6 depending, but usually the dinner for 4 people is really enough for 6, and 6 people is enough for 8.  it comes with various choices but we had the lotus root salad, egg rolls, clams in black bean sauce, green beans and shrimp, fish cooked in a clay pot, sweet and sour soup with shrimp, beef over watercress salad and dessert which was coconut gelatin.  all of that was for 60 bucks, so very reasonable prices.  the worse part is that his area is so popular is that the parking lot is horrendous on weekends!

do not pass go, do not spend your money here ...

mediocre food, bad service ...

our business didn't seem valued and the food was not near as good as what's available next door in the same plaza ... or in pretty much any other viet food establishment in any major city.

Plus, who doesn't serve spring roll with their chargrilled pork bun dishes? that's just standard...

This one of my favorite vietnamese restaurant and I stop here almost every single time I am in philly . Everything that I have gotten on the menu was very good and this what you call authentic vietnamese food. This place can get really busy during their lunch and dinner rush.  Plus the parking lot of this shopping center can get really pack really quick. I would suggest parking on the street before or after the shopping center. My favorite thing from this restaurant would have to be the Three Delight: Shrimp on Sugar Cane, Beef in Grape Leaves, and Grilled Meat Balls for 2, it is a little pricey but really worth it. I would have given this place 5 stars but the service here isn't that consistent at all. Sometimes they are on top of things and really nice and other times they are terrible.

Nam Phuong is my favorite place to get takeout in Philly, so much that I'll bike there in 20-degree weather just to pick it up (they don't deliver). Love love love the Goi Ga (chicken and cabbage salad), which I haven't been able to find at some other Vietnamese restaurants.

The service is always helpful and accurate, and the decor makes me so happy in its old-schoolness: a huge bustling room with chandeliers and big round tables.

Nam Phuong personifies good Vietnamese food on the east coast.

Family and I brunched here some time ago. This is a popular Vietnamese restaurant in - surprise, surprise - South Philadelphia, with decent parking lot (street parking too), large seating capacity, and a conservatively tacky decor. It's not refined, but their true claim to fame is their delicious food, not their interior design.

Service was fast and efficient, taking our orders without issue. They sure dished out a tasty bowl of pho and the we enjoyed the rest of the dishes (shared family-style), including a plate of lotus root salad (totally killer) and a beef cube dish with lettuce and a sweet sauce - the bo luc lac. Recommended if you need a Vietnamese fix!

Oh, Vietnamese food, why do you hate me?

I've given Vietnamese food a try several times, and it's always against my better judgement.  Since the day I got duped into going for Pho, only to find out that there's no such thing as vegetarian Pho, to the day that I went to Vietnam Palace for a friend's birthday, was given the wrong order (which had meat in it), and was overcharged... I feel like it's just not meant to be.

So when my boyfriend asked if I wanted to go for Vietnamese last week, I kindly declined.  It's not that I don't like the food, I just don't love it.  I'm just a vegetarian-Chinese addict that eating anything else (anything at all!) seems silly.  But given my past experiences, I never really had a desire for Vietnamese. He wanted it, though, so I gave in.  And whaddaya know... they gave me the wrong food, and by the time I got the food I ordered, my friends were already done eating.

The problem at Nam Phuong, I think, is that it's a big place, and the waiters all seem to wait on everyone.  So when i realized they gave me the wrong thing, I didn't even know who to flag down, because one guy took our order, another guy brought drinks, another guy brought food...

It's just one more reason for me to decline Vietnamese again.  Nothing against the food, it just hasn't ever really worked in my favor.

Ahhh now I know I can survive in Philly!  This place tastes almost like back at home. :)

I'm so glad to see that there is an authentic Vietnamese restaurant that is cheap and delicious here. This place has a bit of everything in Vietnamese cuisine, including from Bun Bo Hue, Bun Thit Nuong, and Com Tam. Personally, I've tried the My Tho and Com Tam and liked both.

Portions are big and so is the restaurant. Should be easy to accommodate large parties. Enjoy!

Oh, and there is a $15 minimum to credit card charges.

Been here a couple of times with small groups.  While I have not tried the pho there (I can't really have pho, anyway, except the "fake" vegetarian ones, haha) my vietnamese girlfriend really likes it there.  Some of the dishes are great, others are so-so.  They are not a leading restaurant in competition in their vegetarian selection section, but their seafood selection was a-ok.  One time my sister was in town, we ordered the fresh whole steamed black seabass with ginger and scallions.  Oh, so yummy...

The prices are reasonable for what you get.  They have a limited liquor and beer selection.

A few downsides.. A couple of times we have been here and the service was horrible.  For every thing we had to flag down a random server and not once did they stop by to refill our water or anything.  They also took a long long time once to even get our order.

Still, the food and the price matches in value so although I'm not a HUGE fan of this place, I wouldn't mind going back if the occasion rises.

My first time here was during my second year in college and I fell in love!

The food is authentic Vietnamese; from their bun bo hue, pho ga, bun rieu, to their rice dishes, everything is delish and divine! If you go during the spring season, they have sugar cane drinks (something you will not find at other Vietnamese places), and that alone is worth the trip.

I also adore their appetizer! I don't know what else I can say, great food, I mean it's good enough for people to have their weddings there. Don't order their Pho, it's not that great...it's blah  actually.

Service wise, it is good but during Saturdays and Sundays, you might have to wait for about twenty minutes. Warning though, parking is a pain in the *beep* during the weekends. If you're want a place with ambiance, this isn't the place. It's typical Vietnamese setting, nothing fancy. You come, you eat, you pay and leave. That's all folks.

So if you're in south Philly and want Vietnamese, come here, don't go next door, food can't compare!

Admittedly, I haven't hit everything Wash has to offer, but I can't imagine it could get much better than Nam Phuong.  Both their vegetarian and meaty dishes are delicious and always priced right.  (I don't understand how they make money with how much food you get there.)  My food has never been greasy, always spiced just right and all around bangin'.

My recommendations:

* Bun Bo Hoe (spicy beef noodle soup) - I could have eaten the entire bowl
* Com Tam Thit Nuong Bi Cha (pork broken rice combo)
* Veggie summer rolls
* Banh Xeo Chay (Vietnamese crepe) - crunchy but almost creamy. So so good

Aside from inconsistent service, Nam Phuong is totally worth the trip.  (And if you're like me, the food more than makes up for it.)

Nam Phuong is definitely the best place I've ever had for authentic gourmet home made vietnamese food. Being viet myself, this place definitely got all the viet dishes that i've grown up to eat for a very affordable cheap price and same taste and quality in their food.

The service is great and they seat you right away. there's always plenty of room. Their Thai tea is the best i've ever had there for a great affordable price. I would go there everyday for viet food because it is just that good. lol. But I would recommend everybody to go there to have great vietnamese food, plus they have an overwhelming selections to choose from, so you can definitely try a lil bit of everything everyday. I heart this place for viet food, and the only place ill go to eat for viet food, everywhere else is kinda crappy and overcrowded.

Nam Phuong is the best Vietnames restaurant to get delicious, authentic fresh, clean, Vietnamese dishes outside of the trinity of Pho, spring rolls, and Viet haogies. Try:
- Bo Luc Lac (Beef Cubes over watercress)
- Fish in clay pot
- Lotus salad

And the best.....
- Appetizer platter (HUGE platter with shrimp, pork, beef wrapped in grape leaves and assorted veggies and herbs for you to wrap in rice paper)

Parking during the weekends is pretty atrocious, as all of south philly seems to come here for lunch/dinner.

Just in case no one has caught on yet, Nam Phuong has switched owners some time in the past few months.  I didn't think there would be such a noticeable decline in their food so soon after the change.  The original Nam Phuong team has permantly moved to the other smaller Nam Phuong, now renamed Nam Son.  (16th and Washington)

I never thought the smaller Nam Phuong/ Nam Son was that great but since the change, the food there has gotten a lot better.  They have Vietnamese hoagies there, which is a definite plus.  Actually, the menu is almost the same as the Original NP with a few more items.  However, it is a smaller restaurant, in a shadier neighborhood, with no liquor license.  But hey....it could be the Vietnamese Tiffin.  I guess it depends on your priorties, better food or bigger restaurant.

The service in both places is spotty however.  Neither the new owners nor the old owners have figured out how to correct this issue.  You get what you pay for I suppose.

I am so torn between a 4.5 and a 5.  I have been going here for years (back when it was on Christian St for those who remember it then).  I would give this place 5 for all the authenticity of the food and trust me I am a Vietnamese food snob.  I love the papaya salad with beef jerky - DELISH!  I think the shrimp papaya salad would be good.  But tragically I am allergic.

I would also recommend the Ba Vi.  What is it you ask?  It is a "make your own sort of spring roll" deal, it comes with cooked meats, veggies, and rice paper.  Best part is this can easily be shared between 3 people and you will be full.

One down fall is their Pho isn't as good as Pho Ha but that is a whole different story.  I think for good Pho you need to go to a place that only specializes in it.

Best place to be, especially if you are a party of three or less!  Beware of weekends:  tons of whiny kids and whiny senior citizens.

This is simply the better Vietnamese restaurants in the city:  no frills but no shortcuts, great quality of food with a great tag to go with it.

This place is fantastic for those who are vegetarians or vegans!  The vegetarian summer rolls are fantastic - great herbs with vermicelli rice noodles and a wonderful fried tofu as a protein.  Add sriacha (rooster) hot sauce to the peanut dip for a spicy kick and dip accordingly, yum!

Curry vegetables and tofu is SOOOO good here.  Greasy yes, but good!  Fresh vegetables, fresh tofu, and  a great sauce that is piping hot and flavourful!

Or the vegetarian Vietnamese crepe - the batter is made with rice flour, water, coconut milk, and tumeric - NO EGGS, fresh vegetables (snow peas, chestnuts, beansprouts, onions) and tofu in this dish.  Comes with a plate of fresh herbs and the dipping sauce they give you is a soy sauce mixture made w/ coconut soda (to make it sweet).  That is awesome b/c most restaurants would make your food vegetarian but still give you the standard Vietnamese fish sauce!

Prices are super decent and the food, again, delicious!  Servers are efficient and quick!  If you get drinks, get the fresh squeezed orange juice!  It's really freshly squeezed and they must put crack in it b/c it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO addictive!

Where I go when I have a craving for Vietnamese food.  Food is simple, authentic.  Prices are very reasonable.  Only downside is the parking, which can be bad on a weekend when everyone is going to the supermarket doing their Asian grocery shopping.

Was definitely the place to go for their lettuce wrap app. and their wondrous chicken and eggplant, but with the kamikazi parking lot, space cadet service, long waits for food and everything else that you can say about a restaurant that tells you you just can't go there anymore, consider it said. Which is ironic since they're packin em in.  Mozel Tov to the owners and to those who have the fortitude for the experience.

I've been to Nam Phuong a few times and have never been disappointed with  my meal.  I usually end  up here when I'm in the mood for Pho, but whom ever I'm with isn't.

They have a pretty extensive menu offering several vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, all your regular Pho varieties, and of course a menu of bubble teas.

The restaurant has always been clean and service has always been prompt.

I'm the first to review Nam Phuong? Seriously?  I think this attests to the crappy location it moved to from its relatively central location.  That is to say, it moved to Washington Ave, which scares people, from Christian, which feels safe and cozy.  Their food is still the same.  Awesome Vietnamese food, reasonable prices.  They have a liquor license so you can get one of those frou frou Asian cocktails you would never order anywhere else.  I am fond of the coconut drink which has fresh pieces of coconut in it.  Also the broken rice dishes are really tasty as are the rice vermecelli dishes.  I ususally go for some type of seafood, but really the beef or chicken are also excellent.  Particularly with lemongrass. Mmm, lemongrass.

I suggest that if you have some sort of Washington Ave-phobia, that you get over it.  There's ample parking, adequate public transport and it's really not scary.  There are many Vietnamese and Mexican places that are authentic and delicious and definitely worth a try.
