"The oldest bakery in Texas makes...Strudel?!"
All I can say is, "Thank goodness!".

Naegelin's is still family-owned, and  they still make the tasty treats that Germanic settlers brought with them, along dusty wagon trails.

Beyond the cherry and apple Strudels, Naegelins also bakes some spectacular wurst-filled Kolaches and chocolate-chip cookies for a hearty breakfast on-the-go.

    mmmm Naegelin's

Every trip to New Braunfels includes at least one breakfast from Naeglin's.  So many pastries, strudels, donuts, and other savory delights, how do you choose just enough for yourself?

The prices are extremely reasonable and sometimes there is a line out the door.  If you know what you want go through the drive-thru.  It may save you some stress of figuring out the line.

I guess my expectations of the oldest bakery in Texas were too high.  The molasses cookies were extremely dry with a faint taste of molasses.  I have no idea how you can have such a dark brown cookie with such little taste of molasses?  Befuddling I tell you.

The cherry strudel was a big letdown as well.  I'm not sure what I would call it, but the strudel reminded me of a store bought pastry item with generic pie filling.

The employees were nice and friendly, but unfortunately that did not translate into the tasty treat I desired.

I want 2.5 stars, but alas, I can't. I decided to grab some breakfast pastries here on a Saturday morning and was first greeted by a gruff woman who didn't particularly care about my friendly comment regarding my lack of caffeine intake as to why I had not heard her "NEXT!", which was more of a sheepish, "next".

Allow me to go on a tangent here: I don't understand poor service. You're the first person a customer will come in contact with, why wouldn't you want to smile or at least be polite?

I digress, I ordered an elephant ear, cinnamon roll, jelly doughnut and 2 sausage and cheese kolaches (please don't judge me...I shared it all with my girlfriend! :). The kolache was the redeeming part of this experience: a reasonable sized piece of sausage baked with real cheese in fluffy pastry. Everything else was about average. The cinnamon roll was dry. C'mon, you can't have a dry cinnamon roll! The jelly doughnut had a drop of raspberry jelly in it, you ate all the jelly in one bite then all you have left is a piece of soft, sweet bread basically. Huge doughnut no-no; Homer Simpson would be ashamed.

Seriously, for a place that prides itself on being the oldest bakery in Texas, I'd expect them to have recipes to those bakery staples down pat by now.

Naegelin's is a Texas Gem-they did our Wedding Cake and Our Groom's Cake for our ceremony in the Hill Country in 2007-it was the best cake we ever had.  Everyone know them for their great pastries (cream puffs to die for) but they are just as great in making cakes.

If you need a great tasting cake in this area-don't forget Naegelin's :)

    AUTHENTIC.

My grandmother and great grandmother our Czech, and bakeries are very much their favorite outings. This bakery is the oldest in Texas, which is quite inspiring by itself. The baked goods are homemade, and are always fresh.
The sweet German pretzels are a must try, because it is just very unique. During the summer there are tables with umbrellas to sit at  outside to enjoy the downtown New Braunfels scene.
Also if an interesting tid bit....the Granzin family works with Naeglin's to provide cute little sausages for kolaches that are a must try. Being czech, I know a good kolache when I eat one!

    OMG!!!!

This is one of  the best bakeries I've been in!  They had such a huge selection and it all looked great!  We tried a bear claw, a piece of apple strudel, a piece of cherry strudel, and some kind of cheese danish.  And we bought an apricot coffee cake to bring home.  And we all agreed that everything was excellent!

So I've driven past this place quite a few times this summer on the way to the river for tubing.  Had I known this place existed before Friday, I surely would have stopped there everytime rather than at the Sonic up the road.

One complaint though....when the person in line in front of me is taking forever to get 5 million things, it gives me too much time to second guess my choice.  The longer you stare at the cases, the more you want to sample everything.  Oh, the horrors! ;-)

Since moving to New Braunfels one year ago, we have entertained loads of house guests. I always stop by Naeglin's to pick up a struedel or two and then usually another to send home with our happy house guests. Not so after this week. When my dear friend came to visit, I couldn't wait to impress her with a cherry struedel from Naeglin's. This time, the treat was overcooked; WAY too dark on the bottom with a definite burnt taste. I returned the next day for a replacement (we had cut a 2X2" bite from the piece).  What I thought would be a simple exchange turned into a fiasco. The gals at the counter were unfriendly, uncooperative and finally agreed to "call the boss" to see what he wanted to do. They finally gave me a new struedel, explaining that it may be no different (it wasn't; obviously from the same batch) and I left, surprised that any business, let alone "the oldest bakery in Texas" wouldn't have polite, decent customer service. The customer waiting alongside me said, "they should just give you a new one; period". She too, will remember and most likely pass along her experience. I will, in the meantime find another bakery to try. This was my first time to have inferior product from Naeglin's but not the first time to witness poor customer service skills there.

I've been coming here since I was a child...3 stars represents overall, but the strudel gets 5 stars.  Outside of the fachwerk architecture and the fact that this is the oldest bakery in Texas, it just really isn't that great.  In other words, I live in New Braunfels, and wouldn't make a special trip to get anything other than the strudel.  Definitely worth a visit if you are from out of town.

Supposedly the oldest bakery in Texas, this place was a very quaint spot to be. With this cooling fall weather I enjoyed a few baked goods and coffee outside the store front. It's a beautiful town to take in and Naegelin's is right smack in the middle.  It would be nice if they upgraded just a bit to offer a bit more than a cup of Joe. All the same, a very nice bakery.

Oldest Bakery in Texas, so you should go just for the history! It was amazing. When we got to the counter the woman was very short with us, but soon realized we'd never been there, and we quickly realized she was sarcastic and hilarious. She let us sample a couple of things and sent us off with armfuls of pastries. My personal favorite was the thick, warm, soft gingerbread man. Mmm. Eat him immediately as the next day he will be rock hard.

We also had this German pretzel thing that was incredibly sweet and delicious. And an apple pastry that was great... and a few other things I can't remember.

If you're headed into San Antonio, stop here for a snack

So, I grew up with German baking.  Naegelin's isn't *quite* as good as Mom's, but it's pretty darn close!  We trekked down from Austin pretty much JUST to visit Naegelin's, we bought a huge bag of sweet pastries and cookies, and we weren't disappointed.  Here's our run-down:
    - Gingerbread: great consistency (soft, chewy) but could be spicier
    - Eclairs: top notch -- also available at Wurstfest
    - Cream puffs: not as good as the eclairs, but they sure look pretty!
    - Sweet pretzel pastries: a bit on the sweet and greasy side, but tasty
    - Springerle: great flavor, but they were pretty old (and therefore hard)
The staff are friendly and efficient.  Prices are right in the range of expectations.  And the historic building is charming.  Don't forget to buy a local Zeitung from the newspaper case outside.

It is old but the service was annoying and the pastries we got were gross. I've never had a more disappointing strudel. Or bear claw. The place may be old, but if it doesn't remember it's a bakeshop, not even a stimulus package will help it survive.

The sweet pretzels and streudels are to die for here.  Out of sheer luck I happened to pass a display at a wal-mart in town.  Of course I couldn't resist!

I am a bakery lover, and this oldest bakery in Texas is great.  I love their holiday special items, gingerbread, cookies, and even their every day breads are really good and reasonably priced.  This bakery is a Texas jewel and I always make a stop if I am in New Braunfels.

What is not to like. Get some great pastry from NB if you are in the neighborhood.  When I go to WurstFest, I always stop by for some tasty pastry at Naeglin's. Great building too. By the way, the land where this town is located was originally owned (and sold) by the Garza family. I wonder if we are related?
