[W] This is my first time going to Naan-N-Curry and when Mona said it was good, she wasn't kidding! It is a very self serve type of place which is kind of confusing for first timers.
We ordered a wide variety of things from the menu such as, 2 Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo, Garlic Naan, Onion Naan, Keema Naan (Ground Meat), and Alu Naan (Potatoes). The total was $34.99 + tax. You would also have to order the rice separately because the curry dishes does not come with it.
I honestly enjoyed all the food. My sister said that my dish was extremely spicy but it's wasn't at all. Had a little kick but that was it. The Chicken Tikka Masala was really saucy and tasted really good as well. When you eat this food, you definitely have to dip the Naan with the curries.
This place also have a self serve tea, salad bar, and water from their fridge which you can help yourselves. I also recommend getting their yogurt from the salad bar as well. You can use it to dip the Naan, pour over rice, or mix in with your curries. It's supposably for cooling down the spicy food but it was good on everything to me!
The main reasons why they didn't get a 5 star was because they forgot to make our Keema Naan and their Indian music was on blast. I don't know if I was in a restaurant or in some Indian club/ Bollywood usic video type of thing. Other than that, the food tasted very authentic and delicious.
[M] Everything is self service here. If you can't finish the food, there is a room where the takeout boxes and bags are located so you can pack your leftover foods to go. I've been to a few restaurants where they will charge 25 cents per box. Here you can take as many as you need.
I would call the the greasy spoon, basically the Denny's, of Indian food. It isn't great, but if you are hungry later on in the evening, and looking for something cheap-ish, this would be a decent place.
You go to the counter, order what you want, (rice and Naan you must order separately) go to the closet and get your dishes, utensils, water, napkins, etc, and sit at the designated table. I thought this was kinda weird, particularly becuase no one would really explain it to me, even after I asked. I finally just saw someone else do it and followed suit.
You eventually receive your food and it is so-so. BE WARNED! there are a LOT of bones in the meat! I would have to agree with another yelper that ordering a vegetarian dish would be the way to go.
All that being said, this is a good place if you want to sit and read a book, or take your time eating. They don't care if you sit there for an hour, as long as you ordered something to begin with.
Curry sure hit the spot on a chilly night! All those flavorful spices warm you up! BFF and I shared Achar Lamb and Garlic Naan, so delicious.
Come for the tasty food, not for great service. It's order, sit and self serve yourself some tableware in the closet.
Meh......
This place is a dump with mediocre food! First off, what the eff is up with all of these restaurants charging for rice when you order an entree? The food tasted alright but nothing great. The weak condiment bar was completely drained when we showed up in the early evening. For me, I enjoy the accompaniment of raita with Indian food and not having this available was a let down. For the price, the portions were small. The actual building itself is a POS and made for a less than mediocre dining experience. I ordered my food right after my friends and mine came out about 20 to 30 minutes after theirs. Another minus in my opinion. I can guarantee that I will not be coming back.
Let's just say that I'm a fan of the price but not the food. Yes, I love the idea of cheap Indian Food! Who doesn't? But sometimes you get exactly what you paid for!
I'm a fan of the Naan-N-Curry near Union Square. However, I think when offering cheap Indian Food it's important to have a buffet so you can at least enjoy the variety if you aren't going to get quality! I can be very forgiving if I have a lot to choose from!
But alas, no buffet at this location. And so my friends and I attempted to create a vegetarian spread at our table. We ordered daal, chana masala, aloo ghobi, rice, 2 garlic naans, onion kulcha, a round of mango lassi and rice pudding! Roughly $45 later we had said vegetarian feast!
It was decent. Not great, not awful, just okay. If you feel like Naan & Curry go downtown!
I really had a hankering for Indian curry since I hadn't had it in over 6 months. I had passed by Naan-N-Curry many times on previous trips, but never had a chance to eat there. I did have to wait until the last night of my recent SF trip, since I had a dragon boat tourney, and couldn't risk any unwanted bowel movements prior to it. So the last night was balls out with Indian curry.
We went relatively early on a Sunday night, so there wasn't a wait, but there were times when we were eating that the line would go out the door, and then die down again. So some tips for first-timers:
1) Go to the back next to the beverage fridge and get your own damn everything: plates, utensils, napkins, side dishes, water, cups. If I hadn't gone with someone who'd been there before, I would've just sat there waiting for someone to bring me stuff.
2) The curry doesn't come with rice so you have to order it separately.
3) Accepts Visa!
We had the following for about $20:
-Chicken Tikka Masala boneless chicken with sauce (not spicy) $8
-Chana Masala garbanzo beans with sauce (spicy) $6 Never had garbanzo bean curry, it was the same consistency as potato curry, but good for you!
-2 orders of garlic naan $2/each
-1 order of onion naan $2
There are a few seats outside, and you can sit right by the window inside on a nice day and feel like you're eating al fresco.
And good news, no unwanted bowel movements! Heard there are different locations arouns SF. Will definitely be back if I need a hit of Indian curry when in the Bay Area.
Years ago the food prep was disconcertingly uneven. We eschewed the place when any but hardcore Indian food lovers were in our party. The food was woefully inadequate for kids.
No longer. After dozens of meals here over the last two years I have to confess this is now one of my favorite places. Just the smell is enough to enchant. The chicken tikka marsala has been very even. The boneless chicken tandoori "washed" is great for kids, along with rice and tomatoes.
Sadly, lamb keema nann and lamb seekh kebab have disappeared (from several local places; perhaps due to the recession).
The lassi are good, the marsala tea (chai) is wonderful.
This is the place to eat, if you crave Indian food and happen to be on Irving between 7th and 8th. If you have to go much farther, you can probably find a better Indian restaurant.
The food is usually good enough, but the small portions seem grossly overpriced, especially when compared to Pakwan, etc. It is spicy, but I would be disappointed if it were not.
In spite of the name, the naan is only so-so. Tasty Curry on 9th serves much better naan and better food with larger portions for about the same price.
Most of this type--order, pay, get a number and wait--of Indian restaurants seem to border on the edge of health department condemnation.
For the money, I'd make the drive to 16th Street in the Mission and eat at Pakwan.
I walked into Nann N Curry a few weeks back with a big appetite and high hopes as it smelled pretty spot on. I ordered the chicken curry and garlic naan. I paid and looked at the receipt again and realized I had been overcharged about $2. The cashier argued with me for a second, saying it was tax. I laughed and said there was no way there was that much tax. He offered to ring in the food again and I agreed that he should. He realized that I was indeed right and stood there for a minute trying to figure out how much money to give back to me. He handed back a dollar and some change. I looked at it, realized it was still short and he asked me how much he owed me. I said don't worry about it and dropped what he'd given me into the tip jar just wanting at this point to sit down.
I walk over to the table, then look around for water and see that they have pre-filled carafes in a fridge. I take one out of the grime-encrusted fridge and sit down. I look around and realize the place is pretty dirty. There are stacks of dirty dishes on a few tables (the place was empty) and it just felt pretty gross...
My food arrives (naan and chicken curry) and I ask the cashier who had brought it where the rice is. Rice is separate he says... How much? About $2 he says. He asks me if I want some and I laugh, saying don't worry about it. In retrospect I should have asked him to pay for it with his tip, because when I started eating, the chicken was so spicy hot it was almost inedible. But I was hungry so I carried on eating. Later, looking at the menu on my way out I realize they are supposed to ask how spicy you want it.
A few minutes later I watch one of the kitchen staff walk out to pour himself some chai (which is offered for free). I had poured myself some earlier and was slowly sipping on it. He lowered the lever but was apparently displeased with the way it poured because he then used his thumbnail to scrape the bottom of the spout (where the liquid comes out).
So all in all I was pretty disgusted by my lunch and the comedy of errors that unfolded while I was there. Enter Naan N Curry in the Inner Sunset at your own risk... I most certainly won't be back.
Not bad!
Went there last night with 2 of my friends. We were itching for Indian food. Walked in, ordered our food and grabbed a table. We had tikki Masala, Palak Paneer, something else I cant remember the name of, Garlic Naan, regular Naan, and one order of rice. We were so flipping full after our dinner we had to sit there to let everything digest.
I have to say that I'm fairly happy with what I got. 3 main dishes, 2 orders of naan and rice for under $30 I'd say that's pretty fair. Everything was tasty with a little bit of spice to it. I have had better but for this price? Naan 'N' Curry takes care of the Indian food craving I get every once in a while.
I completely hate this place. I've been here two times, and I don't think I can survive another time. The place feels very dirty. You have to get your own utensils and pour your own water, which is kind of lazy in service. The first time I ate here, I order chicken marsala. The chicken was very dry and kind of hard. The curry didn't taste that great. The roti made the dish a lot better. And the second time, I order lamb with spinach curry. When it came out, it looked like crap. I ate it, and it was disgusting. If I'm dying of hunger, and only Naan-N-Curry was open, I would only order the lamb marsala and some roti. It's not that great, but it's the best dish there, which is sad. I'd rather eat the food at Starbucks than Naan-N-Curry.
lol...I guess it's understood that the Naan-N-Curry cashiers will hit on you. Seriously. The cashier at the O'Farrell location proclaimed that he liked my friend while we were walking out and the one on Irving was trying to small talk me. I must say though it's pretty cool that he, an Indian man, lived in Korea for four years.
I decided during this dining experience that my favorite dish here is the Chicken Tikka Marsala. My friend vows by it and I think she totally rubbed off on me. The orangey CREAMY sauce with big chunks of chicken was plate-lickin' good with the garlic and regular naan. I had the lamb vindaloo which was really spicy (WOOT WOOT!) but I definitely wished the sauce was thicker and creamier like the marsala.
Definitely get the sweet-made-with-fresh-mango lassi and the free milk tea...load it up with sugar. Also, during peak dinner hours, make sure you grab a seat before ordering cause it's poppin'.
Don't usually eat here, since I feel like it isn't that clean when people are getting their own dishes (my stds of cleanliness seriously depends on the place, and how I feel)
Came here about a month ago with a friend to satisfy some Chicken Tikka Masala cravings (wanted to get a container to bring home from Ferry Building Farmer's Market stand, but I wasn't going home yet, and didn't want it to go bad) so my my friend and I decided to get our fix here - really good. really hit the spot.
Overall I think Naan-N-Curry gets a 3, but for really doing it's job, a 4! ... I guess I've been really generous with my ratings recently. :)
Naan N Curry is just average for Indian food..
Bad news though, the city told them to stop allowing BYOB.
Self service; decent curry.
I came there the other night for dinner around 7:30pm. It was a week night but they were pretty packed. The place is fully self service. You come in and they take your order at the cashier right at the entrance. They then tell you what table to sit at. You get your own plates, utensils, napkins, water, tea, etc. from a small room towards the back near the restrooms. They bring your order out according to the table number where they told you to sit, so do not switch tables mid way if your order did not come yet. . . .
This place was alright. Not the best curry I have ever had but it's decent enough for the price, two people can eat here and be full for under $20, tip included. My personal favorite was the Chicken Tika Masala.
I would probably come here again for some cheap curry.
It was the best of Tika, it was the worst of Tika; it was the age of repletion, it was the age of the best damn tika i've had. Having never been to London where everyone says it was invented, i don't know about that but i've tried it everywhere else and I must say that this is the best tika. In a city where overpriced Indian restaurants and over paid Indian chefs that over-think their tika a shimmering beacon called...Naan-N-Curry is here for you SF.
Note that not all of the locations are created equal. I like the sunset one the best. The one on van ness is okay but the "hey i used to be a big taqueria" decor is distracting. I feel like Paco in a sombrero is gonna come with his mariachi band and saranade me...only i'm listening to a bollywood sound track...very confusing... but good.
Considering that I've only eaten at one other spot for Indian food, I might be really generous with this rating, but for now it is what it is.
I was a little surprised about how customers have to grab their own dishes/utensils/cups/water/and tea, but in retrospect I think thats an awesome idea. People are too spoiled nowadays anyway so they should get their own shit! hahaha.
This place portions out their food fairly with the portion of food that they are giving out. The Naan bread they hook you up with is big. I dont even know what the other dish was some whipped spinach with cheese, but it was tasty! The other thing was some spicy chicken, which was just as good. To wash it down we had a mango flavored drink that was really good as well.
Compared to that other spot I went to (New Delhi) this place made so much more sense. That other spot (*cough* New Delhi) was overpriced, overrated, and service stinked. This spot is proof that you dont have to go BIG to get good food.
I think Naan N Curry is so "San Francisco" and fits perfectly in with all the other great restaurants in lower Irving St. This is Indian food that ANY picky eater will enjoy. It's always safe to order their Chicken Tikka Masala. (Each order of naan comes with 2 large pieces of naan).
Just walk right in, order up at the counter and pay, they'll give you a number and a receipt. You grab all your own utensils/plates/cups/etc in the pantry near the back. You MUST try the bottomless tea! Just grab a white mug and fill it up - there should be spoons and a bucket of sugar for you to scoop some sugary sweetness to mix in with your tea. It tastes similar to asian milk tea but has a stronger tea flavor. SO YUMMY! I love it.
There's something so comforting to eat good food with your hands and sip on some tea on a cold, foggy night in SF. I ordered one chicken tikka masala and one order of naan for 2 people for $10.94. As Alton Brown always says, "Good Eats!"

I actually really like Naan N Curry. It's easy, it's pretty self-service, it's not too expensive, and the food is pretty good. You go in, you order, you sit down, you get your own water pitcher & glasses & utensils, and then you wait for your food to arrive.
I believe we ordered the onion naan and the garlic naan. They were both really good. We also got the Chicken Vindaloo and Lamb Tikka Masala, I believe. Both a bit spicy (and you know how I can't take the spicy), but not so spicy that my mouth is just hot and I can't taste anything. Just spicy enough to give the food enough flavor so the meal is still enjoyable.
this place is ok. first time i came here the curry was so spicy i couldnt eat with any enjoyment. second time i came here it was much better since we asked them to tone down the spicy a bit (it still had some kick though). i have to say i enjoy the seafood curries, although pricier.
like other reviewees here, i dont get why they dont include rice with the entree ($2 extra). for a complete meal with rice+naan+curry, it will run you near $10 which is ok given that you dont tip...dont think you have to tip here since no one really "waits" on you. everything is self service. water is in the fridge, go get it yourself. cups, napkins and utensils are in the back.
3 of us guys were able to split 2 curries, 3 naans and 2 rice for about $26. its not bad for the price. it isnt gourmet thats for sure. i would come back again.
Possibly the worst Indian food in the Bay Area. Microwaved samosas that were burnt on the inside and stale naan. If I was Mel Gibson in the Road Warrior and had to choose between this place and a can of Dinki-Di, I'd choose Dink-Di. Avoid.
if you're lactose intolerant... beware! they use cream in their tikka masala... and a whole lot of it! My favorite though is Chicken Tikka Masala with garlic naan. I used to not be able to finish a whole dish or naan, but now I might as well just lick the plate clean! I love their tikka masala flavor... probably because its nice and creamy, whereas others would argue that it's not as authentic. most other indian curry places will make their Tikka masalas more tomato based, and no cream. So, I suppose it's a matter of preference. Their curries can be oily, but aren't they all anyway?? =P Most of their curries are delicious, even the vegetarian dishes. The vindaloo sounds delicious... but it's spicy!! I always want to venture away from my fav because everything sounds good, but I just can't... haha
Get their milk tea, it's free!! I usually add just 1 tbsp of sugar in for the right amount of sweetness. I usually drink like 3 cups of milk tea. I used to take a cup home when they had their styrofoam cups... but they got smart and stopped using those =(
This place is definitely a lot cleaner than it used to be a few years ago.. they used to have rugs hanging up from the ceiling, but they finally got rid of it so it's less dusty, and overall more clean looking.
Only thing that sucks about this one is that it doesn't stay open late like the other Naan N Curry's. Parking can be difficult on Irving, depending on the time... but that's just Irving for you. Order when you walk in, grab a table, then get your utensils and water =P A curry dish + garlic naan = $9... but keeps your tummy full all night.
Okay here's the deal with naan n curry. It's good, just don't get the meat, and don't expect it to be consistent.
I've been going to Naan N Curry for about 5 years now. It was arguably my introduction to Indian food, and I still think that Dal should be thick and flavorful like they make it here, not soupy and bland like some other places do.
Unfortunately, it's true... this place has gone downhill. But not THAT much. The meet is chock full of bones that are hacked up indiscriminately and thrown in as meat. This is perfectly normal in countries where bone marrow might be considered an important part of this complete breakfast, but not in this country. I don't like it when tiny shards of bone find their way into what I'm anticipating to be a delicious piece of chicken. I mean, I'd like to keep my natural teeth for a few more years.
Also, the prices have gone up, the cool decorations have been removed (WHY did they change the carpets and murals every week for a year and then suddenly give up and leave it half-baked looking like it is now?) but it's still hopping on a friday night.
You want to know why don't you? It's because it's a good balance of cheap, pretty good and BYOB that you can hit up with your friends sometime between 6 and 9 to have a few beers before it's time to go drinking. When you need to pre-game AND get dinner, and don't want to break the bank, this is where you go.
Plus it's still got the nostalgia associated with what was once a cool spot to go get some curry. Sure the prices have gone up a couple of bucks, and you can't be sure that the curry you had on tuesday will be anything like what you're getting on wednesday, but you can bet that it will be pretty good, not cost you an arm and a leg, and there will be plenty of room for you, your friends, and a 12 pack of beer you picked up down the street.
Which brings me to naan n curry rules:
RULE 1. Don't get the meat. Stick to the vegetarian menu.
RULE 2. Bring beer.
RULE 3. Don't expect consistency.
RULE 4. Don't let the surly oompa-loompa's who run it ruin your day.
BTW they're not BYOB at the moment. Cops cracked down and they didn't have a license or something. A little bird told me you'll be able to bring booz in again in a couple of weeks though. So just hold off for a little bit, then come enjoy the indian techno and carpet sample decor once again.
Naan N Curry is always my staple fall back to get some Indian.. no matter where I am in the Bay Area.
However last night was my first visit to this specific location. First thing to know if your coming in from the East Bay- parking is harsh. Try the public lot located up 7th past Irving. It was a real find.
So after thugging it out aka dealing with stupid drivers that don't know how to signal, merge, get Fast Trac or drive sober into the 49er's Raiders game- on order to get in to SF- I wasn't about to put up with parking issues
Did I mention I hate American Football?
So I parked and walked over to the Naan N Curry- which was busy at almost 9 at night. I know the drill for Naan N Curry- pay and then play- opps I mean- eat. So I ordered one of my staples- Palak Paneer aka Spinach and Cheese and I wandered into the back room to meet up with my friends for Iftar. Oh yeah- if you didn't know- its HALAL.
So this location is great for meeting up with friends because it has a back room that is perfect for large groups of people. Even better this location has a room for salat, namaz aka prayer.
I got my Palak Paneer swiftly and then went to find something to drink. This location because of its high traffic was low on mugs and regular cups that night.
However the cashier- was super nice when I asked to borrow a tray to get chai for the whole table. I love the fact the chai is free and so is the water.
On the down side the back room was super loud because we had two different large groups of people all talking, eating and of course shouting down the table at the same time.
All in all- Naan N Curry stays on my map because.. its cheap and decent food.
Went here today for the first time after checking out the King Tut exhibit at the de Young with 3 other friends, and we were starving! We all decided to order 4 dishes and share.
I loved that they offered free chai, a very nice treat to take the chill off from a cold summer afternoon in the city. Free salad bar too if you ordered a entree.
We ordered 2 plain and 2 garlic pieces of naan, Chicken Biryani,
Chicken Tikka Masala (Butter Chicken), Lamb Vindaloo and
Palak Paneer.
We received 3 of our dishes (everything except the Chicken Tikka Masala) and started eating. Everything was delicious and so flavorful. After awhile we realized that we never got our Chicken Tikka Masala, although at that point we were already getting full from the dishes we already had. One of us had to get up and remind them that we had one more dish that we had ordered. No problem, it will be right out. Well, when we finally did get our Chicken Tikka Masala dish, the only thing I enjoyed about it was the sauce, the chicken seemed dry and over cooked.
After one last cup of chai to end the meal, we headed out full and satisfied. Our total bill for 4 people with all the food that we ordered only came to $10.50 each! I definitely will be back, but wont be ordering the Chicken Tikka Masala next time.
This place is aiite once you learn your way around... it's not too evident where you get water and cups and utensils. The naan isn't huge but it makes up for that by being fresh, chewy, and tasty!
Curry is all good, like usual - tikka masala is the same everywhere though.
So, it was good, service was pretty fast even though it was packed at like 9:30pm, and we even got a free order of rice... when the server dropped it at our table, we were like uh we didn't order rice but he was like whatever it's fine, haha, so... cool...
Nothing to complain about except there's a traffic jam at the cash register when you first come in through the door, and where to get stuff is kinda a puzzle.
Whhaaaaaatttt!! No more byob?! That was one of the best reasons to come here. We went last night to sit and drink big beers and eat cheap, decent food but we were shut down and couldn't drink what we brought. That's fine but I don't think I will come back anymore. Sad news...
Seriously? Chicken Tikka Masala is your most popular dish? Well, I couldn't eat it. I could barely get it down my throat. So so disappointed. I was starving and brought some home, only to end up eating plain naan because I really didn't like it. and trust me, I know pakistani food.
i checked out the lunch buffet at the location in the tenderloin though, and that was better. not great better, but edible. some of it was good, some mediocre, but edible. I know some people love the chicken tikka masala, but I was definitely not one of them.
3 for the atmosphere, they blasted music way too loud. Restrooms aren't that clean which was sort of a let down.
As for food, you can't go wrong here! For a group of four, we ordered regular naan, two onion naans, and potato naan, two plates of rice, tikka masala chicken curry, chicken vindaloo, and one other curry that we still don't know the name of (but it was pretty spicy). The curry dishes vary from $6 to $13 dollars, depending on the ingredients, and breads and rice vary from $1 to $4. It's a relatively cheap place for lunch or dinner and it's self serve for chai (a free cup per meal), water, plates and utensils.
It's a great place to catch up with some old friends.

I find that this place is usually hit or miss. Where sometimes the chicken tikka masala is just spot on; really dry; or really tomato-y. This last time it was pretty spot on but the wait for the food was just ridiculously long. The tandoori chicken was mighty tender and pretty delicious. But once again, the wait was ridiculously long. I feel that all the times I go here, the results are always a little bit different that it's not really one of my most favourite places to go to in the city because it's just not really that reliable.
mmm garlic naan.
So this one time, I decided to purchase paneer masala in one of those vacuum-sealed packs. It was $3. i figured, "Well, I do love Indian food, but it could get a bit pricey dining in an Indian joint 2x a week, so why not try this?" It tasted like seat cushion foam with spaghetti-o sauce. Needless to say, I was sick and didn't eat for about two days.
Love Indian food but don't have the wallet for it? Come here instead. Don't be like me during my not so shining moment in an attempt to save a few bucks. Naan-N-Curry is a great place for fast and inexpensive Indian food. Their paneer is pretty good, not chewy or stale. The texture and flavor of the spinach was surprisingly good. Also wonderful is being able to bus your own table and keep what would have been tip to pay for your next Indian meal. I know, awesome. Palak paneer ($6.50) + aloo naan ($3) is a very affordable meal.
In the words of Homer Simpson, this place is groin-grabbingly good. We ordered from the takeout menu for lunch last week. The heaping curry portions, fragrant basmati rice, and big blanket-y circles of crispy naan pretty much made me a fan for life.
It was my first time at Naan-n-Curry.
Inexpensive, yet creamy and delicious curry in front of your face. The rice and/or naan (your choice) is warm and fresh! All of this + all of the chai tea and salad your body can possibly consume.
It was dark and slightly sketch-looking when I went, but the food was great, and it was a nice little place to sit around, eat and chat with a good friend.
They will be seeing me again. and again.
CHEAP! INDIAN! FOOD!
Service is terrible. They have this laid back sense of when you need to order, get your food, or pay. There is a system, but it is not immediately obvious on how or when to order, pay or get a drink even.
So, here are the rules as far as I know:
Walk in, get in line.
Order Saag Paneer (excellent), Naan(delicious, buttery) and your other Indi-Paki favorites.
Take a number.
Take a seat- Anywhere you want.
Get yourself some utensils, plates, napkins, water, or any other beverage from the closet.
Wait for your food- it won't be long!
Enjoy your food- sooooo good.
Take your number and wait in line again.
Tell them what you took from the beverage refrigerator.
Pay.
Great for big groups- you can all order and pay separately and there are usually tables for 10-15.
I'm a huge fan of Indian food, but I'm not a big fan of Naan-N-Curry. I ordered the standard Chicken Tikka Masala, and the sauce wasn't what I expected. I was looking for a rich, bright, reddish, creamy sauce. Instead, I got a dish with a watery orange sauce. The chicken quality was not fresh. There are so many great Indian restaurants in the city, why would you come here?
Considering that you place your order at the counter, seat yourself, get your own utensils, water, plates, etc... it follows that this place should be cheap. And it is. It is also a little grubby, but I do my best to look past it and accept that fact that I can get chicken tikka masala for less than $7 and naan for $1... a freakin' dollar. The rice has really gone down hill and had gotten more pricey, like used to be free and is now $2.
Yesterday we took my sisters to the Irving Street location, ordered two rices, two naans, and 4 dishes (2 chicken and 2 veggie) and it was $34 total. What a deal. Who cares if it is dirty? And yes, the chicken tikka masala, although skimpy as hell on the meat, is a pretty good sauce. Not the best, but damn good enough. Oh yeah to the person who acted shocked that the tikka masala has cream in it... duh. Where have you been eating Indian food?
Maybe it's just my lack of experience with any kind of Indian food, but I came in here for the first time yesterday and it was very strange.
The flavors were wild, but that was to be expected.. But the place was dingy, and the portions were quite small. I'm not sure how to judge the food, but I'm sure it will grow on me when I go off to try it once again, perhaps at another place. You get your own plates and forks and .. everything, except the food you ordered, frankly. Quite interesting.
However, maybe I'll try Indian again, just not here.
Ate here today for the first time. N train stopped just after it on our way home, thought we'd check it out. The Chicken Vindaloo came to the table like a blessing from above. Just spicy enough, very flavorful. The Baigan Bartha was less spicy, but equally flavorful. The naan was good, as was the rice. Mr. Sarcastic Paki at the register is a little rough around the edges, but the cooks and servers were nice. Next time I will order the spice level a bit higher.
This is a nice solid place to go if your looking for a meal between you and friends to share that is relatively inexpensive. Also if your looking for some authentic curries this is the place to be. The inside is deceivingly spacious and its unique in a way that you get your own napkins, utensils, water, soda, etc... but they do serve your table with a number know what what each table is getting.
The food itself is great but at times I wish the portions were a little larger. The chicken tikka masala is the must get item here along with their amazing garlic naan. That couple with some rice and you got yourself a meal! I have always adored the fact that the sauces are never too heavy to the point where you couldn't finish the other dishes either. It's a good feeling to have once satisfied when completing your meal. The music can be a little loud at times but I do appreciate them playing an alternative mix to go with the times rather than some unknown music that may annoy their patrons. Overall this is a solid place if your looking for good Indian food in the Sunset.
Came here Monday night with a group of friends - this one of the restaurants where you seat yourself - we got there at 7pm and was able to find a table to fit the 11 of us. This is one of our go-to places when we want yummy Indian food. It's nothing fancy at all, just a very casual place to have Indian food. This is a self-service place so you have to grab all the utensils, cups, water, tea, napkins yourself. You place your order of your food and they give you a number that you place on the table. The server will walk around looking for your number and give it to you.
We ordered the chicken tikka masala - something we always order. Its really delicious here, full of flavor and spices. This time, we ordered the cheese with the masala sauce as well - this was something different for me, but it was really good. We also ordered the spinach with the cheese, the shrimp vindaloo, and the lamb briyani. Everything was really good - and of course with the hot naan its even better! The cheese naan was actually pretty good but I prefer the regular plain naan. I love the chai tea here! Great to drink hot chai tea on a cold day, and its complimentary!
Not the fanciest of Indian places but its really good. The tikka masala is a must! My friends love the sauce - in fact you can just order the sauce without the chicken for $4 -instead of ordering it with the chicken. My friends actually do order it like that and just eat it as a dipping sauce with the naan. It's inexpensive, casual dining!
