Hanging out at our hotel late at night (3am), we were suddenly overcome with a fighting hunger. His belly was rumbling, and I was starting to bitch...more.
We yelped with the handy "open now" tool and found that Naan N Curry was open 24 hours, which is really cool in itself. Their buffet was over, of course, so we ordered from the menu:
Lamb Vindaloo
Chicken Masala
Naan
Naan stuffed with potato
Naan stuffed with ground beef... blech!
Rice
The Lamb Vindaloo (spicy lamb curry) was seriously delicious. It's now my favorite Indian dish. The Chicken Masala was also really good. I've noticed that the flavoring here is more savory and on point than other Indian restaurants. This is pretty impressive considering that they are working 24 hours. I had expected the food to taste old, but it wasn't. As a matter of fact, they put our steaming HOT food in quality containers. The front person -owner, I believe- was SUPER nice and friendly. His service, alone, would convince me to come back.
Beware:
The alleyway to the bathroom was designed to mock those in horror movies. Take someone with you!
being back in San Francisco and going back to Naan 'N' Curry is like finding a long lost love! Know I know why people leave their hearts in San Francisco!
I went to the old Naan 'N' Curry the last time I was in town and it was like heaven! Channa Masala never tasted so good. It was a tradition to practically starve until you could go there and get more than full on tasty Indian food. My husband and I went to the new one in the Tenderloin and it was conveniently located two blocks from our hotel. The first night in town, we walked over and feasted on the yummy treats we had so fondly remembered.
I got the buffet, which was not as cost effective as just ordering a plate, but I wanted to sample the many savory delights they had to offer. I have never seen my husband look more in love than he did when he took the first bite of his beloved Chicken Tikka Masala! I was almost jealous....not really.
The buffet was extensive and there were many vegetarian dishes on it. I got curry veggies, channa masala, veggie masala, naan, papadum and rice. I was so happy to be living the dream of curry and veggies! They still give you complimentary chai, although I could not partake, due to the caffeine.
The new space is ok. It's roomy and had plenty of room for patrons, but I prefer the small spot from before. It does seems to run smoothly an the food is still amazing. The cost is still unbelievably low too. My husband went back the next night for more! He brought it back to the hotel and brought me some papadum to tide me over. You must try it if you have never been there!
Not sure why there's such a love-hate dichotomy for this place. If you don't know how much I like Naan 'N' Curry already, check my review on the Irving location.
This however was my 1st time checking out the O'Farrell one. I specifically made it a mission to head out here since I heard there was a buffet offered for lunch & dinner.
So for $13, you get all-you-can-eat access to seriously like 15 different Indian dishes. Roughly 9 vegetarian and 6 meat dishes. They also serve up my favorite sweet rice dessert (kheer).
All for the sake of this review, I unselfishly tried to sample each dish. Though I nearly felt like I was going to pass out from being so overstuffed, I feel every single item offered was really tasty. The standouts were the saag paneer and the chicken tikka masala. The chai tea here is also worth mentioning. Really strong but nicely balanced with the perfect amount of cream pre-mixed in. Since it's self-serve and all you-can-drink...it's definitely hard not to like...it's also hard to avoid insomnia after drinking 3 mugs of it during dinner.
So for this Naan 'N' Curry branch in the Union Square-TL area, I give it a big thumbs up. All the goodness of my Irving regular spot, but I really appreciate the all-you-can-gorge option.
"Want naan with that?"
That's our new joke for Naan 'N' Curry. ;-) We ordered our entrees and the funny man who runs the place asked, "Anything else?" then implied that they need more business. LOL! It felt like he was asking, "Want fries with that?" after ordering a full combo meal from MickeyDeez.
This location is my favorite. It's just been consistently the best one. The only one in the city I have not tried is the one in North Beach. I do love this one, it's sort of easy to get to, parking is hit or miss (HIT for me always), the staff is funny, the food is great, the chai is always right on, and aside from the fact that they are renovating the place, it's perfect!
They also added a decent-looking buffet since I was last there. Nice!
Tonight, we went for basics: Saag paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala (my fave) and I forgot what the third dish was. Add some delish chai and you are set for a badass meal.
The only odd thing is that there is a new "No Alcohol" sign up. It used to be BYOW (Bring yo' own wine) or whatever your lushy drink of choice is, but apparently no more. That means we can't get a little tipsy then push back all the tables and get 30-40 people dancing wildly to super late night desi music like we did one magical evening a year or so ago. ;-) Ahhhh, memories... Jennifer P knows what I'm talking about.

Of all the Naan `N Curries in town (i've been to 3), this is my favorite.

Dear Naan 'N' curry,
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways:
I love thee at late hours of the night and no matter how weary I am from bar hopping you always take me in because you never close.
If only you would exist where I live I would pay rent and be a permanent resident.
I love thee for the free chai that is available to everyone, despite the uncleaniness of your mugs, I take your chai openly and freely.
I love thee as much as chicken loves curry as much as Naan loves garlic and even more so. I love that you offer potato, cheese or meat stuffed naan.
I love thee for Roti Prata is only $1.00 here.
I love music in the background, though I understand not a lick of it, I know it sings sonnets to me as I devour thy products.
I love thee to the death and breadth of time, I would love thee until thee were no longer mine.
The naan is good; the curry, not so much... The problem is that the food is overly spiced. It's not too hot, necessarily, but simply overpowering and lacking in subtlety of flavor. It the sort of thing you continue to taste for a few hours after having eaten it.
3* instead of 2 only because at 3am, when my taste buds are blunted and It's too late to be picky, this place satisfies my cravings for naan and dal.
I thought the food is pretty good.
Even though it's not the best, but the price is reasonable and the food is tasty!
All I have to say is the following: $13 for All-You-Can-Eat Dinner Buffet!!!
Because it's in downtown SF and a few blocks away from the heart-of-Union Square, this place is awesome for a group of 5 or more. All the food will satisfy everyone's taste buds. :D
Just a generic breakdown on what they have:
-Different types of Vegetarian & Meat Curry
-Steamed & Fried Rice
-Salad & Fruit Bar (Blood oranges is so juicy & sweet!)
-Naan (Who doesn't like naan?)
-Dessert: (Indian Milk Tea is delicious! Put 2 teaspoons of sugar.)
Service: The cashier guy was friendly and the bus boy picked up the dirty dishes off the table. It is what you expect. Also, everything is pretty much set out for you to get for yourself.
Ambiance & Cleanliness: It was okay.
Music: Very upbeat Indian music! It makes you want to dance a bit. :D
Overall, my friends and I didn't eat as much as we wanted to, but we enjoyed the spiciness, rice and all the yummy yellow curry!
Such a love hate relationship.
1. I hate you because you never have Malai Kofta.
2. I hate you because my hair always smells like curry afterward
3. I hate you because you have bad lighting - like REALLY bad at 3am
4. I hate you because you always sound good and then become a regret
1. I love you because you are open all the time
2. I love you because you give me chaat house chai
3. I love you because you don't judge me at 3am under bad lighting
4 I love you because you are patient when I tirelessly ask you for malai kofta at 3am under bad lighting

Came here for lunch w/ my buddy...we walked to the cashier and asked how much it was for the buffet and he said $9.95. My buddy and I looked at each other and agreed we would grace this establishment with our dining presence on a cold drizzly afternoon. But then my buddy asked if we pay now or after...and the man said, "what do you think". We still paid and ate here, but that rubbed my buddy the wrong way, so it ruined our dining experience a little.
But I digress, let me get back to the part that you want to know about the food. I tried all of their chicken dishes and the chicken tiki masala was the best out of the 3 that I tried. It was pretty standard stuff, the only difference between eating at Naan N Curry restaurant style is that because you are eating at a buffet things are not piping hot and have been sitting under a warmer for a while. Some foods just taste better when they have been freshly made, like naan. Their desserts were ok, tried their rice pudding and some fruit. Their fruit must have been sitting there for a bit because my watermelon looked in a sad state, now don't get me wrong, I still ate it because in the winter I tend to lack in fresh fruits and getting scurvy would be so 18th century of me.
I have always been a fan of naan 'n' curry however
I believe that the Berkeley location provides better service albeit they do not have an option for buffet. I ordered a garlic and cheese naan
however the man must have been confused and gave me a seperate garlic and cheese naan. Other than that the typical vegetable curry was just as delicious as every other naan 'n' curry place that I have been to. The free tea is delicious, and I always drink at least 3 cups at every meal.
I need to go to more Indian restaurants in the City. I've been pretty spoiled in the South Bay when I used to live here. I went to the other Naan N Curry in FiDi, so I decided to check out this branch.
Despite the limitations of the buffet, I didn't mind paying the $13 fee. On the other hand, it was very neat to try some of the other vegetarian curries that I normally don't try. The eggplant curry was delicious, and the saag was very smoky, something that I normally don't notice which is a great thing.
I'm pretty impressed overall. It can get busy, but I do like the atmosphere of the thing.
I'm knocking off a star. It's not that the food has gone down in quality - it's just that it's no longer 24 hours! That's worth a whole star in my book. It's still a lot later than normal - I believe they close at 4am now.
They still have my favorite chicken tikka masala except for the stuff I've cooked myself!

I'll give them 4, why not. They deserved it from what I had. This was definitely not the best Indian food I have had, but it was decent. I got here real late (about 12ish am). They had stopped serving the buffet already (I think it ends at 10), but that okay cuz I wasn't that hungry anyway. Last time I was in town I ate at Sultan next door and thought they were decent if a bit over-priced (but only got the buffet, so didn't complain).
Overall, I thought they were very good considering the low price. I had the lamb saag curry ($6, don't remember the name), the paneer stuffed naan ($3), and some basmati rice ($2). The rice was a bit bland, but it was just rice, so overall pretty good. The naan was somewhat of a disappointment because I though it would be more exciting with the paneer. It was still flavored well though, so not bad. The lamb was delicious though. It was very, very tender, gamey, and had very few bones. The few bones that were there still had the marrow in them, which was amazing!
Had a nice quiet, late night meal and got out the door stuffed for $12 total. Not really a sit down type of place, more like a cafeteria type of atmosphere, but it did the trick for me.
I came here with co-workers for the $10 lunch buffet. The quality is not as good as Sultan next door, but there are more items. The vegetarian dishes were better than the meat dishes. The chai was free and good. The music was good, but too loud. We thought it was funny that they charge extra for samosas, because they were awful and completely over-spiced. We all agreed that the eggplant dish was amazing though. The meat in the meat dishes was very dry or rather fatty.
Basically, vegetarians will prefer Naan'N'Curry, while non-vegetarians will definitely prefer Sultan next door.
All you can eat? Good.
Selection of Indian food? Decent.
Quality of food? Just okay.
Workers there? Terribly rude.
[Enter restaurant, not greeted. (I notice later when it gets busy and when the older crowd comes, the host greets people, in a much nicer way.) We approach the guy:]
Me: Do we pay now or later?
Guy: What do you think?
WTF??? Please. That was a VERY legit question. SEVERAL all-you-can-eat places have you pay at the end, but this guy insisted on trying to make me feel like a dumbass. So that pretty much ruined my meal. The only reason why I didn't leave right there and then was because we wanted to give this all-you-can-eat Naan N' Curry place a shot, and we had trekked all the way out into the city specifically to get Indian food at this place. I don't think I'll be coming back here again since there's plenty of nicer all-you-can-eat Indian places around.
As for food goes--the rice, naan, and chana masala definitely took a downfall in this buffet. I've been to the Naan N' Curry in Berkeley many times before it was buffet-style, and it's certainly better--potentially more worth it--to opt out of the buffet. The chicken tikki masala is always my favorite at Naan N' Curry. Rice pudding tasted pretty nasty compared to other places I've been to... dunno what was up with that, or how long stuff sits in this buffet. Smart move would be to go right after the lunch rush, around 1pm. I think that could guarantee some fresher foods...
I remember the first time I came here. I was like, "indian food? huh.. this new...and exotic" but I also remember walking out of here thinking, "OMG, THE FOOD IS GOOD!" haha, The reason why I like this place is because of how spicy some of their food is! I'm going to admit, that I love coming here when I'm kind of under the weather, (KIND OF). heh, heh, heh, the curry and everything makes my sinuses go away! I also really like the samosas and I definitely recommend this place for vegetarians because the options are well varied.
I also suggest to NOT use the restroom at this place. Don't say I didn't warn you.
It's dirty. It's ugly. It's tasty.
... kinda like your Friday night date.
Get on it.
I got food poisoning and had severe diarrhea for two full days after eating at this place. It was the chicken mikka massala(sp?). Never going back to this place again. Their food is unsanitary. The old guy at the register was a rude snob too.
Love, love, love this place! Open 24 hours a day, so even after I get out after a wild night partying at Ruby Skye or anywhere else, I can always come there and have what I always order, the paneer tikka masala (cheese cubes in Masala sauce) and Aloo (potato) naan. The place is huge, with two large areas for people to eat in. It's usually very crowded and the food is very inexpensive. The guy who works there used to flirt with me all the time because I used to go there so often so he used to chat me up a bit. Good times. Nice buffet, great chai. Minus a star for not accepting credit cards and for playing the bhangra waaaay too loud at times, making it impossible to have a conversation with the person sitting across from you without yelling. They really need to tone that down. But the food is so good, I guess I can look past that.
I came here on Saturday with 5 other people. They open 24 hours. We did the buffet. Most of us were planning on eating a lot but that didn't happen. Haha. There is a lot to choose from. They ran out of chicken and it was just sauce. I had to tell them that they were out. The food was good but most of us were only able to finish 1.5 plates of the food. The first batch of rice they had was crunchy but the second batch was good. "Free" chai! Plenty of room to sit and the music was good.
What in blazes happened?
Went in this Sunday and it was a complete shit-hole. Dessicated vegetables in watery curry ... green watermelon slices ... flaccid paranthas ... gallons of "tikka masala" gravy with only a handful of tough chicken pieces ...
This buffet has gone RIGHT down the shitter.
The guys at the front desk asked, "so, how was it?"
I replied, "it's gone downhill and the selection is less than it was before."
They then argued with me, trying to convince me that it was my imagination.
Oh and I don't want to get into too much detail but suffice to say this meal was followed by a gastrointestinal event.

I wanted to try Sultan but I walked through the door of Naan 'N' Curry. They are right next door to each other. The entire time I was "dining " at Naan 'N' Curry, I thought I was in Sultan. They both offer lunch buffets. Surroundings were grim, like a high school cafeteria but not as charming. The food? The hot food was cold ..the cold food was warm. Everything was mushy and similarly spiced. The naan was brittle and that's wrong. The whole time I am thinking evil thoughts about Sultan. The meal was so yuck that I'm off Indian food for a long time. I realized I was in Naan 'N' Curry when I looked at the credit card receipt hours later.
Take out was way better than eating their all-you-can-eat lunch buffet. I've gone here a few times, but you never receive anything more than half assed service and okay food.
Take Out Experience:
- Food was warm/hot even after bringing the food back to the office.
- Naan was soft and cripsy on the ends. Pretty good garlic and regular naan.
- Quick and out the door
Dining in experience during lunch on a weekday:
- The food I put on my plate from the buffet area was luke warm. Ew!
- The naan was cold and hard. Double Ew!!
If you want to know more~ read Jessie H.'s review. She's got a bit more to say than me since she had her final trip here the other day. You might laugh but you might also gag.
I walked past this place a few times before heading inside. I managed to peek in and see a buffet/counter style set-up and made a mental note to try it late one night as it is open 24 hours.
They have a constant buffet but I decided to order off the menu instead. Going with my usual... paneer tikka masala, rice and naan, I figured I couldn't go wrong.
My food was ready in a flash which tells me it was probably sitting around for a bit and was subject to a reheating. I didn't mind. The naan was soft and stuffed with spicy potatoes... I got the aloo variation. The paneer to tikka ratio was disappointing... leaving me longing for more cheese. I was able to make good use of the sauce though--thank you naan. Yum.
This place would probably be perfect for late night after-the-bar food.
Solid 3* Indian restaurant for drunk munchies. I've yet to try this place sober since the only times I've came here were after drinking with coworkers. The buffet was definitely not as good as it used to be a couple months ago during the remodel (maybe cause they only had the buffet to focus on).
Important note: they no longer allow you to BYOB due to a crackdown in October!! My group snuck it in anyways and drank out of tea cups, but we did get yelled at and warned sternly by the owner that we risked getting citations by SFPD. We were beyond caring and everything turned out fine; who are they to turn down our money in this economy? ;)
The ratio of meat to curry is pretty crappy on the buffet, and they were slow to reload the tandoori chicken. On the plus side, the pieces I had were surprisingly good quality cuts of meat and seasoned quite nicely. Overall the food was on the spicier side (for a buffet at least), so be careful if you can't handle much. Naan was reloaded fairly consistently.
I've ordered off the menu in the past and my comments on that are pretty much the same as the buffet.
Overall this place would most definitely not be my first choice of Indian food in this neighborhood, but a solid choice past 11pm and if you've been drinking.
This location of the Naan 'N Curry franchise is not bad at all. When you are really hungry, it's actually quite phenomenal. They actually have a buffet that goes well into the night and their prices are not unreasonable especially if you need to eat unlimited quantities of food.
If it is before 11 PM and you are not in a hurry, then you absolutely must walk up the street to Lahore Karahi. if you absolutely must eat right now and you're quite hungry, the food here is actually quite serviceable. I used to order off the à la carte menu, but it seems silly to do so when the buffet had nearly everything on it. Even late at night, they are constantly switching out the buffet items and overall it is surprisingly clean but nonetheless is still a buffet.
Like many Pakistani restaurants in the city, they allow you to bring your own beer. This is worth its weight in gold if you and your friends want to drink beer. It's worth twice its weight in gold if you have the foresight to buy your beer before you leave because the liquor stores nearby are rather expensive.
To sum up: go to Lahore Karahi if you can. Go here if you are really hungry and need immediate gratification.
I came here at the end of an epic night. My big Sikh friend suggested we come here after last call to meet some other Indian friends of his. I'd never heard of this place but thought to myself "all right I'm being taken to the real stuff by people that know where to find it!" I was surprised to find out that this is neither "the real stuff" nor very good, in fact the group I was with were the only Indians in the place.
Naan N Curry is a 24-hour Indian Buffett. If you came here at 6:00 PM you'd find the food disappointingly mediocre but at 3:00 AM it's awesome.
Accept it for what it is.
I am not gonna complain but the food is not that good. I was not satisfied at all! One thing I know is that I am not coming to this place ever again! I would rather go to the resturant next door, Sultan. The bathroom was very, very dirty. The customer service was terrible. In conclusion I am not coming to this place again.
I just discovered that this Naan N Curry has a dinner buffet. I think it was $12.99, which is slightly more expensive than other Indian buffets I have been to. There were way more dishes than I expected. The problem is that they didn't taste that great. The CTM, bengan bharta, naan, and chai were all solid. Other than that, nothing else really struck a chord with my taste buds. I also question the cleanliness. I really prefer India Palace on Fillmore.
It was nice to see another one of these outside of Berkeley, but this location was seriously a mediocre journey. The cashier guy forgot to get my take-out order to the kitchen, and didn't seem to care. The chicken vindaloo however was flavorful -- and nuclear hot, as vindaloo should be!
In short, if you're willing to wait 15 minutes to get a really mediumish amount of curry and a naan for $12.50, then, well... this is the spot.
Found a roach.
Dude gave us our lunch for free. Which was nice, but then he totally ruined it by saying, "Yeah, got your lunch for free! Lucky day!"
Um. Finding a roach and getting my lunch for free does not equate to "lucky day" for me. It's not like I won the f'ing lotto here.

I was here with several fellow Yelpers like Jessie H. Seriously, a roach walked across the table and nearly into our friend's plate of food. Totally disgusting. They gave us free lunches for eight people, but it doesn't alleviate the disgustingness of seeing a roach.
We went back to work afterwards and I told another co-worker about this. She said the last time she was there, a plate of naan was brought out with a fried roach right on top. Yuck!
Either Naan N Curry has gone downhill or the Irving branch is way better.
Colleagues of mine from work and I had the lunch buffet here yesterday during our break from OpenWorld.
We all commented on how dirty the dishes and flatware were (some had flecks of food still on them). Also, the following were just plain bad:
- the bittermelon dish
- the chana masala
- the lamb
- the naan - soggy and tasteless
- the tandoori chicken
Only the rice and the chicken tikka masala were edible.
The chai was half-decent but the desserts were uniformly pathetic. The halwa was unappetizing, the gulab jamun was sad and the kheer tasted like slightly milky but thick porridge.
For $5 my colleagues (three of whom were Indian) and I would have regarded this place as mediocre (3 stars) but for $10? 1 star. Thank goodness most of the dishes were spicy. The turmeric and other spices probably helped kill some of the bacteria.
At 3am when you are inebriated, want food badly, and don't care about the calories you re going to consume right before you go to bed...go to naan n curry. The food is decent, but when the scenario is as described above, the food magically transforms itself to becoming fantastic! Don't forget to get a cup of chai before you head back home and pop a tylenol and chase it with pepto as a worthwhile preemptive measure...good times!
Something about this place really bothers me. The Irving and Van ness locations don't bother me as much but yeah. I think it is because the staff is slow to remove the dirty dishes around the restaurant and the decor is so drab and depressing. Plus the cashier boldly proclaimed "I like you" to my friend when we were walking out. AWKWARD.
Anyways, about the food. My friend and I went on a Thursday night and found that they got rid of their regular menu and only had buffet. I got a plate full of Chicken Tikka Marsala, Daal (lentils), and another stew with Garbanzo Beans. I would have to say that the best thing was the Tikka Marsala. I would recommend just getting a plate full of that, rice, and the onion naan. They had this orange mushy thing that tasted sooooo weird. For $9.99 you do get your money's worth but I definitely like Sultan next door much better. They have a great lunch buffet for $12 or $15. :)
I've been to the one in Renton, WA and was excited to try the San Francisco Naan 'N' Curry location. My friend had been here numerous times on past trips to San Fran, and we both decided it would be a righteous first meal on our trip.
Here is what I recall from my Renton Naan 'N' Curry visit - decent food, really, really expensive bill, casual yet charming atmosphere. My visit to the San Fran Naan 'N' Curry was decent. When we stepped in we faced a large dinner buffet set out for patrons. We decided to order off their menu (as eating the buffet would probably cause us to stuff our faces). When looking at their menu, the prices were significantly less than what I expected them to be, given my past Naan 'N' Curry experience. As for the food, we shared the aloo naan, garlic naan, saag paneer, and a dish I can't remember the name of - potatoes in red sauce. The naans were delish (especially dipped in the green sauce) and the saag paneer tasted pretty plain but the potato dish was plenty flavorful. We helped ourselves to a pitcher of water from the fridge (there were shelves of pitchers full of water ready to go), and grabbed our own silverware, plates, and cups.
Overall, I was satisfied with a belly-full of Indian food for less than $10. The food wasn't amazingly good and actually made me miss my favorite Indian restaurant back home - Gateway to India (Tacoma, WA). But like I said, it was satisfactory and I would recommend that you check it out for yourself sometime. There are apparently three different locations in the San Fran area.
The restaurant is a little on the shady side, to be sure. It's most definitely not one of the highest-class joints in town.
But I always stay at the Hilton across the street when I'm in town, and I'm a huge fan of stumbling across the street at midnight for a plate of lamb vindaloo and some kinda naan.
The service is questionable, and the food is not the best in the world, but it still somehow manages to be one of my favorites when it comes to Indian food.
Went there the other night out of desperation. It was midnight, and I couldn't bear the thought of going through the Burger King drive-thru again. So I let down my guard and decided to give Naan N' Curry's buffet yet another chance.
I've gotta admit that the veggie dishes were edible, not greasy like last time. But the pieces of chicken in the tikka masala looked like little pieces of chewed gum, and they were completely dry. The masala was mainly yogurt with an inadequate amount of spice needed to complete the meal. Also, how in the world can the naan be COLD when it comes directly from the oven into a lamp-heated container? I'm just hoping it wasn't recycled from another diner's leftovers.
This place is truly, truly hideous, and seems to get worse with every visit.

Perfect Way to SPOIL an evening in San Francisco.
Buffet Service is Crappy.
Owner has too much attitude & does not care for Customers.
Ask him for Buffer refills & he tells that it is coming. Food never comes at all. He asks you to wait 30 mins for an item.
Rather go hungry than go to this place again.
