I love Angelica Kitchen's laid-back, tranquil atmosphere.  The servers are generally very attentive, soft-spoken and helpful in explaining the menu.  It's a very relaxing place to have a tasty meal.

The food, of course, is yummy.  It's entirely vegan.  My favorite dishes are the hummus plate, which is a nice serving of rich hummus with fresh veggies and toasted pita, the marinated tofu sandwich, which contains fresh lemony tofu and sweet roasted veggies plus a spot of green pesto.  The hot open face tempeh sandwich is also a winner, with very rich tempeh in mushroom sauce and mashed potatoes.  I'm not a huge fan of their desserts, though.

A nice place for a casual vegan meal.

the waitstaff here is amazing.  the food is prepared to perfection.  however, the menu hasn't changed much in almost a decade!!  good thing they have some tasty classics.  now if only the customers would behave......  love the "no cell phones" rule, so much more relaxing and enjoyable an experience.

Let's hear it for the best spread in Manhattan: Miso tahini spread, that is. Specifically, Miso tahini spread lathered on southern style cornbread.

You can make an entire lunch out of an order of cornbread (with spread) and soup. I am a fan of the tempeh reuben -- it's not heavy and the condiments on it are fresh. The specials change and are usually stronger than the regular menu.

I love me some steak, but I can get down with the macro. Angelica's kitchen is great. I took my parents here while they were in town and I'm 98% percent sure they went there every single day for the remainder of their trip... They are creatures of habit for sure, but that says something very positive about the place I'd say.

I like getting the dragon bowls and picking out my choice of grain/greens/dressings; very healthy!

Random fact: they do not have ice in the restaurant.

Angelica's Kitchen has a nice, casual, laid back environment.  I had the Ole Man Seitan which was like a big burrito.  It was just OK... could have had more flavor to it.  I also had the carrot/apple juice with ginger.  Now that was a GREAT drink!

My friend went to the bathroom early in the meal and had to wait on line.  When I went as we were about to leave, I also had to wait on line.

Other than the bathroom thing, it was a nice place for lunch.  Good service... the food came out quickly and not expensive either.

This is a great place to go to with a friend or a date because it has a cozy and candle-lit atmosphere. Also, when in doubt or in moments of conversation lulls, you can always gesture or poke fun at their "community table." Great food - their dragon bowl mayy not be the most flavorful of things, but  it still tastes great and feels really healthy. Try their Fruit Kanten Parfait for dessert, it is de-lish. Come before 6 or 630, as front door starts to crowd then.

Pros:
Place where hippies, yuppies, college brats and bums, and all Earthicans alike are seated together.
Cons:
Only one bathroom for all.

Although I was with the third worst date of my life, I actually enjoyed this place. The decor had this beautiful fantasy earthy feel to it. The food was good vegan. The oil free salad dressing I had was very flavourful and the tempeh rueban tasted very good in my mouth: not rubbery and not sandy. The coconut custard I had was quite a medley of flavours with the mango and crunchy thing.

No coffee? But clearly the clearing of rainforest for the caffeine addiction is wrong. This bark/bean thing was pretty good.

I still had a good time because of the ambience and food even if the company was just not... not... not!

Cash only.
BYOB.
Wait time might be 30 minutes.
Service Superb.

I really enjoy the people I meet at this place. It's delicious, seasonal, friendly atmosphere with a quality of feeling at home with beautiful relaxing decor. Note for live (raw) food items it's not the best, but the great thing is that they do have items on the menu.

Also don't forget it's cash only!

Very good and vary healthy.
Went here on a date, being that I arrived about 15 mins early, I got a drink at the take out bar. The girl was so friendly and chatted about the various vegan friendly places. I think her name was Jaimie, a cute out going Asian girl. Inside, the waiter was so nice and added some eye candy to the already beautiful interior--he found us a lovely table by the window and helped us throughout the order.
I loved it here so much, especially when our waiter noticed that we were annoyed by the cellphone user and he kicked her out. I hate cell phone addicts and love Angelica's for hating them as well.

The food was hearty, as most raw foods are. My boyfriend is more health conscious than I, but we both are vegan and try to stay healthy. Angelica's Kitchen is a great place to find flavor beyond your normal "granola" type of bland flax flavors.
I forget what we had, but both meals came with cornbread. That was the second time in one week I got cornbread, which is so hard to find vegan. Mine was the traditional southern cornbread and his was the house's--mine was better.

Lets get o the good stuff--dessert. He got some mouse, which was good but light and skimpy. I got the parfait, which was so good and big enough that I could lend some bites to my beau... which, being a former-fat-kid, I do not do often.

2 Stars - Perhaps it's because I am not a vegan and I just can't do this seitan or spelt deal.
So many people rave about this place and I just don't get it.
Sure, it has a nice atmosphere and it's a very relaxed place but what about adding some flavor to the food?
I remember someone raving to me about the Dragon Bowl.
After looking at the menu for a good minute and not seeing anything jump at me, I decided to get the Dragon Bowl.
But when I told the waitress that I wanted the Dragon Bowl, she told me it's not really flavorful.  It's just steamed vegetables and she recommends getting something with more flavors like the tofu sandwich.
I love Tofu, so why not!
I was expecting this Tofu sandwich to be hot and flavorful but after biting into the sandwich, I was so disappointed.
The sandwich was opposite to everything I was hoping it would be.
Cold and No Flavor!
I doused my sandwich with cayenne and black pepper and still...eh!
The meal itself wasn't satisfying to me.

I guess this is why I can't be a vegan!

P.S. T loves the lentil pate but I thought it was okay.

This place is exactly what a vegan place should be.  Lots of hippies, both serving and being served.  I disagree with the blandness assessment.  I find the menu to be varied and tasty.  I've never ordered anything that I haven't liked.  The specials never disappoint and it's BYOB with no corkage fee.
Service is friendly and FAST.

For awhile I dated one of these raw food eaters.  So I had to get used to these places, this one was my favorite of all.
It had a nice, inviting atmosphere.  Friendly, friendly waiter who practically took 10 mins of his time, discussing the menu to a McDonald's eater like myself.   I ended up with this superb fish salad.
Only problem was the bathroom line, and than after waiting for 14 minutes the hostess told us it was broken.

Desparately needing some private time with the roommate, we headed to Angelica's Kitchen for a grub-n-gab feast. Though she recently went vegan, I've decided to remain an omnivore for a while...hence finding places where her options aren't just plain pasta with olive oil has been an issue, (because vegan or not, she still likes her food to have flavor.)

We started with the Sea Ceasar, the Cauliflower soup, and the Sprouted Sourdough Bread w/onion spread; all were delish and filling. Roommie had this seitan wrap thing (which was reminiscent of a barbacoa beef burrito from Chipotle) while I scarfed down the open faced seitan roast sandwich, with gravy and ruby-kraut (evoking the comfort of a hot open faced turkey with gravy sandwich.) Dessert was a shared Warm Apple Crumble with tofu whipped cream, that though tasty, had more of a breakfast-y vibe.

Pros:
-BYOB.
The idea of paying a 200% markup on a crappy glass of boxed wine does nothing for my appetite. Hence, three cheers for letting us cart in our own booze (which we undoubtedly enjoyed more).

-Vegan rappers.
I'm no starfucker, but every now and then when someone of immense talent crosses my path, I can't help but to become a drooling deer-in-headlights. And last Friday, it was *Mos Def* (sitting right behind us) and *Andre 3000* (sitting two tables to his right).

-Good prices
The food was filling, healthy and fairly priced. Some vegan/vegetarian spots seem to think that using organic products gives them to right to jack up their prices beyond a reasonable amount...luckily, AK isn't one of them. We walked out with a $50 tab (+$10 tip.)

Cons
-No reservations and a small wait space.
The roommate and I waited about a 1/2 hour for a table, which on a Friday evening was to be expected. But...the wait area was so tiny, I was standing on top of the diners. * guilty face * And as the restaurant filled up, and waits extended, I know that other people felt the same way.

-One bathroom.
One solitary bathroom, for guys and gals. I'm not complaining about the unisex-edness of said potty (especially because this is where I literally bumped into Mos Def) but seriously: 50 some-odd diners + 1 potty = bad math. Though the peppermint soap smelled amazing, the actual bathroom itself was quite gross.

In conclusion; be prepared for a wait, bring your own booze, look (but don't gawk) at the celebs, and you'll undoubtedly enjoy your meal.

Being healthy is something that's new to me.  Growing up in a Hindu household, Vegetarian food isn't.  But of course, healthy vegetarian food is.  And so I was confronted with this paradox when entering Angelica Kitchen.

What I encountered was a menu full of vegan delights filled with stuff I've never heard of.  Food products invented for the purpose of not having meat in them.  Like Tempeh.  No offense to those who like tempeh, but this thing is the ultiimate fake out.  It looks like a cheese cube, tastes initially like soy, but then it has the consistency of a potato, crumbles into a fine powder and leaves a strange aftertaste.  I was freaked out.

Luckily my main course was a product of some ingenuity.  A quiche made of soy cheese, mushroom, spinach, carrots and cauliflower...it was actually quite delicious and hopefully healthy.  At least they told me it was.

The service I encountered was actually quite good in contrast with the rest of reviews here.  Friendly and attentive.

Would I return.  My old self would say no, but my new self might have to.  Finding good, creative healthy food that appeals to a former eater of all things grease, cheese and meat isn't very easy.

Angelica Kitchen is a really cute BYOB ( no corking fee) cash only vegatairan restaurant.

Interesting menu options...
Lots of bean dishes to choose from. Homemade bread ( which I think they charge you extra for) and yummy desserts.

Great place to take friends visiting for out of town!

I came here with the Steak Club (http://www.yelp.com/li...) for pre-steakhouse drinking.  Why a vegetarian place?  Well, we wanted to load up on booze first, and it was BYOB and relatively close by.  I'm sure there is a closer BYOB place, but these were the pre-Yelp days and that Sidewalk website really sucks.

So, armed with around six bottles of wine, we head to Angelica.  The server gives us a crazy stare, and we're like "that's right mofo. we're ready to drink."

We end up ordering a bunch of appetizers to help soak up the wine.  They turned out okay - nothing that really stands out, but considering that its vegetarian, I would place it on the decent side.  The hummus was actually pretty good.

I have to apologize to our fellow vegetarian diners that evening for our loud, obnoxious talk of how big and juicy the steaks were going to be later on that night (we went to Strip House, and in retrospect, it wasn't that great).  I'm sure that if I were abstaining from alcohol, I would be under intense torture watching others merrily drinking the night away.

I went here two years ago and remember loving it (this coming from a rabid meat eater). The bread was seriously some of the finest carbs to pass through my lips. But things seemed to have changed for the worse. My table ordered the once delicious cornbread and what came out was dry, crumbly and lacking flavor of any kind. The only thing that redeemed it was the quite good carrot spread. Also ordered the "reuben" and was even more disappointed. It seriously tasted like cardboard and came on bread that was somehow even more dry and bland than the cornbread. Thankfully the total with tip for the meal only came to about $12. Definitely not worth the cash or the calories.

Despite being vegetarian (well ovo-pesco-blahblahblah) I'm not typically a fan of vegetarian restaurants because they tend to be a little orthodox about it.

When my friend and I arrived here for brunch I was looking forward to a nice sandwich and a plate of fries.  Now the nice sandwich part worked out well; I got the marinated tofu sandwich which was drizzled in a tasty pesto and jammed between two delicious slices of multigrain bread.  However I was appalled to learn that, as the waiter said, "we don't serve anything fried".  I was almost ready to ask him "well can you just bake some fries for me or something" but I felt that might have brought on a vegetarian 'roid rage attack so I backed off.  But yes you've been warned, don't come searching for a sandwich with a side of fries, you'll come away disappointed.

Good raw selections and juices. I ate here a while back and loved it. A little on the expensive side, but that is to be expected for raw vegan fare in New York. They also have nice healthy menu items that are cooked, but still without a lot of ingredients. I value a good tasting meal with as little ingredients as possible and they know how to do it right.

I love this place for takeout, as I am alone a lot in this city and takeout is good for fine-alone-dining. :)

They have a waiting area inside (good for winter), separate from the dining room. It is quite quick, and the Mushroom-Tofu ball w/Udon noodles special I had the other night was awesome. I mean awesome!

Also tried their chai, and that was great. Nice to know it's soy milk, sweetened with agave, etc. My tofu balls and a piece of wheat-free cornbread added up to about $15. Great for a dinner that turned into leftovers for lunch the next day!

If it were a little closer to the subway I'd probably go there every day!

Just a note: the dining room was packed with people waiting outside when I went on a Monday night.

Angelica's Kitchen is the reason why people think vegetarian food is bland and tasteless.

We ordered a sampler plate with pate, some pickled vegetables, etc.  It was ok.  For the main course, I ordered some sushi-inspired rolls.  The description sounded amazing.  The actual rolls were tough to chew and difficult to swallow.  My sister ordered the signature Dragon Bowl, and it was bland as well.  Flavor please!

I have been meaning to yelp Angelica for awhile but wanted to wait until I had actually visited recently. I have had many amazing meals at Angelica over the years. last Friday night was the first time I ever BYOBd and it definitely enhanced the experience no corkage fee!!!

Although the menu is pretty varied and extensive 4 out of five times I order one of the daily specials. The special I had Friday was not one of the best I have had but it was good. The split pea soup was yummy as was the Angelica corn bread and miso tahini spread-YUM!!

The big bummer was not being so enthralled with the dessert selection-they only serve chocolate on the full moon (fyi)

The service is good but I have had better but it gets quite crowded.

They don't take credit cards (you know because of "the man" ) so hit up the ATM before you visit.

People rave about this place, but I don't get it. I am basically a vegetarian, so I would expect to like this place. But I ate there a few years ago and got such an unclean feeling in there. The table, dishes, glasses, silverware just did not seem clean. The place was too earthy for me, earthy not in a good way, but in an unclean, unwashed way.
Now that vegetarian cooking has hit the mainstream and there are numerous vegetarian options in the city, I dont see the need to go to Angelica.

I really wanted to like Angelica Kitchen, but my dinner there last night was a letdown.  I do enjoy vegetarian food on occasions, and when my vegetarian friend suggested we go there for dinner, I was excited to give it a try. The restaurant wants to look fancy, and obviously they spent a lot of time on the decoration, but neither the food nor the service impressed me.

There were three of us, and we were seated at the most awkward table in the restaurant: a round table so huge I could only hear half of what my friend sitting across from me was saying. We asked our waiter if we could move, but apparently that wasn't an option, but he promised to take good care of us... if only.

The menu is interesting: large selection of appetizers, salads and entrees, all of them vegetarian of course. We started with the kimchi, which wasn't bad but did not taste anything like kimchi: it was more like cabbage, carrot and ginger salad, and tasted overwhelmingly like ginger. We also tried the salgado: baked balls of mashed Yukon potatoes, which were actually quite tasty.

For my entree, I ordered one of the specials called sasquash: a bean and vegetable stew, which came with broccoli, daikon radish, and some side of grain which wasn't couscous although it looked and tasted very similar. This all sounded very exciting, but I wasn't too impressed by the stew (I honestly think I can make a better one at home, and some of the beans weren't cooked thoroughly)... for $15 it was disappointing. The side of cornbread wasn't the best either: a little dry and not very flavorful. The hot apple cider however was tasty.

On top of that... service wasn't the greatest either. My glass of water was empty for half of my meal, and our waiter didn't even bother filling it at the end of the meal. And cash only? WTF?

Anyway... if the food was exceptional, I would easily put up with the spotty service, somewhat expensive prices, and cash only. But I left the restaurant unsatisfied, still hungry, and feeling somewhat ripped off.

I took my friend here today for her nineteenth birthday; we were seated immediately and were asked what we'd like to order quite quickly. I had the picnic platter, with a selection of norimaki, kinpira, live curried cashew spread, walnut lentil pate, and various crudite. While all of this was delicious, I felt quite hungry afterwards (perhaps this is because my non-vegan stomach needs some cheese and bread to satisfy it). However, due to the fact that service was kind, not at all intrusive, and generous with water refills, I would certainly return; I want to get my hands on one of the more expensive entrees when not worrying about treating my friend. ^_^

I have been here twice, and both times I had a great experience. I went for the Thanksgiving meal, it was absolutely delicious. I dont usually eat a lot of meat alternatives, but they prepare them well here and offer you a good selection. The pumpkin pie was the size of my head, and delicious. It is vegetarian comfort food in a warm and friendly environment.

The food here gets 4 1/2 stars, but I only gave 3 stars due to the really poor service (we had to wait 15 minutes just to get our order taken by our unfriendly waitress). But the food was surprisingly rich in flavor- and we vegetarians know that it is pretty hard to come by flavorful veggie-only menus.  It also felt really light and healthy (not too much oil or cream). The only other non-Asian veg place I've been to that has surpassed Angelica's taste factor is Candle 79. Note: the portions are on the small side!

I'm a vegetarian so I was glad go to Angelica Kitchen.  But after getting there, I was glad to leave!

I should've known what I was in for when the sign on the way in quoted Ben Franklin, saying something like "If your head is wax, stay out of the heat" or kitchen or sun or something.

Angelica Kitchen has plenty of seitan and tofu to go around..yep, it's that kind of vegetarian place.  I asked if it was possible to make the Friday salad without....and was cut off mid sentence with a strict "No!"  Everything is premade.

I found the patrons to be a bit odd.  We sat next to the wall which has coat hooks and on this very rainy night, people had no qualms about reaching over my friend's head to hang their coats, umbrellas, etc.  One guy went back into his coat pocket for what I assumed was a bottle of cough medicine (it was one of those brown glass prescription bottles...not flask like in the least) and downed the thing.  Then there are the communal tables...some odd conversations overheard from it.

Of course this was nothing compared to going to their one person WC.  I had to wait and when I did, a guy came out...AND DIDN'T FLUSH THE TOLIET!!!!!!  Now you know darn well he didn't wash his hands!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps my taste buds have changed because I do not find the food at AK to be bland...or maybe I just really prefer non-saucy fresh organic food!  Angelica Kitchen's food is always fresh, organic, sustainable and so reasonably priced for such high quality. You can truly taste the nuances of herbs in the dishes which include colorful vegetables, beautiful beans and wonderful grains.  Angelica's natural fresh goodness is never "masked" with heavy sauces to distract...a trick other establishments employ...tsk tsk.. shame on them!

In all the years I have been there, I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal..not once!   I usually go for the delicious specials and bring along a bottle of organic Frey.. BYOB... No corkage fee. The vegan desserts are quite scrumptious as well.  I feel so full and healthy after indulging in the vegetarian comfort food Angelica Kitchen dishes out so perfectly.

What is their secret you ask?  The owner has a great longtime relationship and respect for the people who provide her produce.  AK is immaculate...the place is spotless!   She even closes for a few days once a  year to do a thorough cleaning.  I have never seen an uninvited creature winged or otherwise..thank you Angelica!  One can eat off the floor in the bathroom....hmmm not an appetizing visual....but you get the idea!

Cute, very charming and cozy atmosphere...however, other diners can appear to be "old school granola eccentrics bordering on irritating....good idea  to steer clear  from the "community table if you are easily offended  by women who refuse to dye their hair or shave their pits, and men who do eat Quiche.

Angelica Kitchen serves up some of the most delicious vegetarian fare I've ever had.  I used to go here quite a bit before I became a meat-craving-savage, and I just returned last week to see if it was as good as I remember.  It was.

I had the Sam or I sandwich, of nice dense flavorful marinated tofu and greens on delicious bread.  It came with a salad, and I chose the house dressing, which wasn't so great.  The lentil pate though was outstanding, and I ended up dipping my salad greens in that and that worked out just fine.

So why three stars, if I loved the food so much?  We had the worst waitress ever.  She was listless and had just this horrible dead energy, so not what you'd expect from someone working with people!

I got there before my friend and ordered tea, and then got hungry so I looked over to her so she could come over and take my appetizer order.  She slowly walked over with the aforementioned 'dead energy' and gave me a 'yeah' sort of look.  So strange! Be friendly!  Smile!  I think because I've worked part time in retail this past year, it totally kills me to see someone not be friendly.  It's so easy!

Even after my friend arrived she was weird, so much so that he commented on it.  The annoying thing was that there was a regular there, and she hovered attentively over his table so much that she neglected us.  Yes, regulars are important, but so are out of town yelpers and their local friends!

So yeah, if it weren't for the short blonde waitress and her terrible customer service,  I'd give this place 5 stars.

I have said it again and again - all restaurants should take reservations.  Especially if it is a large party over 8 people.  The wait for Angelica's Kitchen started @ 7pm.  2 hours later and 13 dirty looks at the women who refused to leave, we finally got a table.  Only to find out it was B.Y.O.B.

The thing about making people wait that long is that no matter how great the food is, the review will be tainted by the poor customer service of the wait.

Restaurants should really take that into consideration because as good as the food is, when I'm really hungry I would never think of Angelica's Kitchen because I know that it's going to take forever to get a table.

That alone has made them lose one customer.  I'm sure I'm not the only one.

But to be fair, after one of our friends ran across the street to buy some wine, the appetizers started to come.  The mushroom pate dish, the hummus dish, the picked cucumber dish were all really tasty.  I don't know if it was because we were starving though or if it was really good.

The waitress seemed unattentive, she couldn't even remember if we ordered 3 chai's or 4, I had to remind her, but in the end, they brought us a couple of free appetizers, which was nice but not completely redeeming.

I ordered the H.G. Dills - it was a phyllo dough pastry with mushrooms inside.  For a vegan organic dish, I thought it was pretty tasty.

They ran out of Vanilla Layer cake but I did try the Peach Kanteen and that tasted like baby food.  I like baby food, especially the Gerber Apricot one.

Overall, I would not say the food was delicious but it was far from bad.

For the food I give it 4 stars.  For the service, I give it 2 stars.

I really hope they reconsider their reservation system.

Delicious food.  I tried the Hummus and the 3-Bean Chili.  Pretty damn good.  Especially given that I usually like places with at least some meat on the menu.    Quaint, healthy, easy, fun.  Good to try something new.

However, beware of the somewhat snooty waiter who plays holier-than-thou.  We asked for a glass of ice water - God forbid our water have ice in it.  Apparently, ice interferes with proper digestion.  Okay, interesting and good to know.  But I really didn't like the "oh you poor meat eater, ha ha ha, ice?  you fool!" attitude.  He told us we had to go to the liquor store around the corner to ask for ice if we wanted it.

Oh - and they don't accept cash.

I'm just here to echo all the positive reviews and offer a few suggestions.
1. Pay attention to the specials. I've only been here once, but every time I read the daily menu, I'm always impressed by the specials they offer. I can't exactly remember what I had...it was a tofu souffle, I think...with eggplant and arugula. It was splendid. And beautifully presented, I might add. (PS. It's in the pictures, too.)
2. Order the sushi with the wax beans and split it with someone cute like your sister. Catch up over tea. You won't regret it.

WHAT? A hardcore two decade vegetarian only gives Angelica Kitchen 3 stars? WHAT?!

I do like AK, mostly because the food is so healthy and fresh, but I get that it's not for everyone. It is a bit bland and pretty old school as far as vegetarian cuisine goes these days.

That said the Sam or I and Tempeh Reuben Sandwiches are as good as old school veg gets, and nothing feels as satisfyingly healthful as a big ol' AK Dragon Bowl. I just think that as time has passed -- and there are now all-veg Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese to compete with, not to mention haute cuisine vegan and completely unhealthy veg comfort food -- AK might need to step up.

I'm not a vegetarian, but love vegetarian food, so I'd been pretty psyched to try this place, and the menu didn't disappoint. My friend & I split the marinated tofu sandwich and the tempeh Reuben. I'd been most excited for the latter, but definitely enjoyed the former more. It had an almond pesto that was absolutely delicious. With the Reuben, I really missed the cheese, which was my biggest disappointment. We got them both on the multigrain bread, and it was fresh, fluffy, and rich tasting. We'd also started with the multigrain corn bread and the onion spread. While I wouldn't have gotten corn from the bread or onion from the spread, the were both pretty tasty. And the prices are so reasonable, and for such delicious food! Plus, the atmosphere is so warm and home-y. Feels very genuine, too. Seriously, I'd have given it five stars if they weren't cash only. I will definitely be back.
