NY Cake West is a cake maker's paradise! Decorations, cake plates, icing, flowers, pans, cookie cutters, gum paste cutters, utensils ... if you need it to bake cakes, cookies, or cupcakes, they've got it! It's all laid out in easy-to-find fashion ... the basics like cake pans and the extras like pre-made flowers and little sugary decorations. I swear that even if you're a novice, those little extras will covertly make you a star when you bake your next cake. ;)
Originally being from the East Coast, I was psyched to see that this store is the West Coast sister location to the original NY Cake in NYC. The same fabulous customer service and attentiveness can be found here. The prices were very reasonable and the parking in the back was great when I made my first visit during rush hour when there is no street parking allowed on Pico.
Even more exciting? They're offering a bunch of Wilton Method cake decorating classes: Discover Cake Decorating, Flowers & Borders, and Fondant & Tiered Cakes. Those three classes are each four sessions for $85. They're also offering Chocolate Making and Cupcakes Galore which are both 3 hour classes, one time, for $50 each.
As a bit of a baking nerd who is addicted to Ace of Cakes, loves an episode of Tori & Dean when there's a Hansen's cake involved, and will stop, drop, and be glued to the tv when there is a cake challenge on the Food Network ... this was my kinda place. Originally I just stopped in to grab a cake plate for my hubby's birthday cake ... which I did not bake this year (shhhh!) ... in a rush, no less. You better bet I'll be back. I'm going to take some classes and ready myself for a cake challenge or head to Baltimore to offer Duff my services! ;)
I have loved their original NY store for decades. It is wonderful that they have branched out to LA. As a professional baker this is the supply store to beat all baking supply stores. Their inventory is always inovative and up-to-the minute. Their service is great. I recently placed an order, was helped first by a professional and pleasant young lady, and then when she had a question the manager came on the phone to clarify my request and give me the best price available. The product was in my shop in two days. Will definately be a regular customer.
My three daughters and I couldn't wait for this place to open. We finally got there yesterday. What a great time. We are beginner bakers and found everyone to be so helpful. The store is so exciting and we wanted everything. Everything is neat, clean, organized and colorful. We figured that an outing to N.Y. Cake West and an afternoon of cupcakes was more affordable than 3 kids to camp! Really fun family time!!!
