I give this joke of an attraction 4 stars for ONE REASON (and i do mean it when I say this place is a joke, because it really is awful)...
-longevity... it's been around forever and it just won't die. People keep getting suckered in and they keep making money there. I even bought a shirt there. It's ridiculous.... Don't Go! Yet, I doubt you will be able to stop yourself. It's impossible, everyone goes... it's basically a law at this point.
Give Mystery Spot the lifetime achievement award for terrible tourist traps. It really is the 8th wonder of the world, suckering people in since the 18th Century. Discovery Channel should do a special on the genius of this special business and it's marketing. -

It's the kind of place where you embrace it for what it is, give in to the shared experience, ignore your intellect, and go for it.
You'll stand sideways.
You'll sit on the wall.
You'll see water run uphill.
You'll literally climb the walls. (Yes, literally.)
All in a little shack covered by a tarp behind a store selling rubber tomahawks. And t-shirts.
Go. Just go. -

You can do much worse than to hug the Northern Coast of Lake Michigan on a gloriously sunny August afternoon. Three generations of men fishing lazily along, pristine air blowing in through your open window, and views of dancing sailboats and tall pines as far as the eyes can see.
Approach I-75 near the end of the Northern Peninsula and the landscape becomes tainted with tourist billboards gaudily announcing your return to civilization. The most intriguing of these is a black and gold question mark with its siren call of a "Mystery Spot" lying just ahead.
The closer you get, the signs multiply, daring you, taunting you, drawing you ever closer: "World's most mysterious spot ahead", "You know you're curious", "Come on, buddy, what else are you doing today?" The most maddening thing about it all, of course, is there is nary a hint of just what mystery might lie at the spot ahead.
The one that finally pushed me over the edge read something like, "Your life will continue to be a meaningless void until you've plumbed the unending depths of this mystery." Well, hope springs eternal, and I pulled of at the turn-off, last stop before the eternal return to the Eisenhower highway system.
Then I met the last sign I would read on the topic: "Mystery Spot closed for renovations, thank you for your understanding." -

I have wanted to go to this place for years whenever visiting the u.p..
I must say I wasn't missing anything. I knew going in not to expect too much, but this 'landmark' is ridiculous!! They 'perform' optical illusions in a sort of shack that are not at all convincing nor fun. I can say they have gift shop with unusual and cool items with semi-reasonable prices. I hate to give such a poor review, but it really doesn't deserve any better... -

Make sure to visit this tourist trap with friends with a good sense of humor, and this will be the highlight of your trip.
