I'm not usually one to factor authenticity into my reviews. If food is good then I like it, regardless of who says it is or isn't authentic. But My Thai is making me break my pattern, because I ordered the Thai Basil Chicken expecting it to actually be like the Thai dish I've had several times before, and it was nothing like it.

Thai Basil Chicken is usually made with smaller bits of chicken and lots of basil, and the whole sauce is infused with basil flavor. At My Thai, the chicken was in large slices, there were a few basil leaves scattered throughout the dish, and the sauce tasted like their standard brown sauce. It was a decent dish on its own, but when they call it 'Thai basil chicken' I have a certain expectation, and I was disappointed. I *at least* expect it to taste of basil, and it really didn't.

Service needs improvement. Granted, I went with a large party, but they didn't handle it well. They couldn't remember who ordered what, and everyone's dishes came at different times. Other people had been eating for 10 minutes or so before I got my entree.

I will say, though, that I liked their side salad. It's iceburg and shredded carrots with a peanut dressing that, though pretty sweet, is good in small amounts (the salad is fairly tiny).

The decor is nice but for some reason I feel the noodles here are more ''starchy'' than other Thai places in town.

I believe this is the same owner as Fuji Jade (and I have MAJOR beef w/them because of their customer service)... so I have to say it's not my favorite place in SC.

I've never had any problems with the service here though.

The best thing about MyThai is that there are coupons that they send out, so it's slightly cheaper here if you eat with a friend.

While I've had okay meals at My Thai in the past, the meals I ordered yesterday were horrible.  It was obvious that the Pad Thai wasn't fresh and I had ordered chicken, but there was a ton of tofu in it too.  If I had wanted tofu, I would have ordered tofu.

I then ordered a fairly expensive entree, Lemongrass Pork Chops, and it was soooo appearant that it had been "grilled" either the night before or the morning of and then reheated.  Might as well have been made of rubber and tasted about the same.

I'll be sticking with Cozy Thai where I'm never let down.

I was surprised by My Thai. We usually order it delivery, and the portion sizes are very large. Sometimes the food can be a little bland, but the food is still good. I'd give the food three stars really, and I tack on another star because they are always friendly, and they deliver pretty quickly to us, even if it means the owner has to get in the car and drive over. We used to go downtown to Cozy Thai to eat, but My Thai has replaced that as our go to Thai place.

Caveat: We have not dined at the restaurant, just ordered delivery.

They delivered on Christmas day and that alone is worth 3 stars.

But in the same regard, the food is pretty excellent. I've found a delicious friend in the cooler coconut curry, while the fiancee prefers the green pepper curry. Either way, it was about $13 for each curry for what came out to be roughly 2 1/2 meals out on each one.

Although the prices seemed a bit high when I first ordered, you truly your money's worth. Besides, who else is going to deliver as you stare at Ernest Saves Christmas for the eight billionth time?

Review summary - as you can see by the rating - AWESOME! This review is based on two separate trips to the newest Thai place in town. The only options so far were Cozy Thai and Viet-Thai, both of which were competent. But My Thai so far is brilliant. Hope the quality does not dip.

The first item we ordered was an appetizer called Thai roti. From the name, it seemed like an Indian-inspired Thai dish. And that's exactly what it was. Very yummy. Rich leavaned bread (what we'd call parathas in India), pan-toasted and served with a peanut-cumin-based dipping sauce with small chunks of beef. Wife and I liked it so much, that on our next trip, we ordered one for each of us.

Another appetizer we tried was crispy tofu. Ladies and gentlemen, I haven't tasted fresher and tastier tofu in my life. Crisp on the outside, soft on the inside - something like good ole mozzarella sticks but way way better.

Soups, we tried old favorites - tom kha and tom yam, and both were easily among the best we've had ever.

For the entrees, we thought of sticking to the standard ones like penang curry or pad thai, but then decided to experiment. The waterfall beef was good. But a curry called....Chian Min I think (or something like that) was a total home run. A green curry with a coconut base, with perfectly cooked beef, and okra, bell pepper, pineapple and mango. Perfect combination of spicy curry with sweet stuff. Do try it.

The beverage menu is good too, with lopang, pomegranate, honey-lime, among the options. All good.

The service for the most part is quick and efficient. There is one waitress who seems extremely confused. The first time we went, she got us an entree (when we had ordered watermelon beef). We bit into what seemed like meat, but it turned out to be tofu. She had given us someone else's order!

On our second visit, a couple of weeks later, the same waitress seemed equally confused. We were seated closest to the kitchen door (there were two other parties at the tables after us). And everything she got out, she asked us if we had ordered. When we'd say no, she'd move to the next table, and then to the next. This happened about 10 times. It was funny, but also kinda annoying. Either they don't have table numbers, or she has a bad memory.

But the other waitress and the waiter are helpful, friendly, and efficient. And the food like I said, was awesome, miles ahead of the other Thai places in town, and in So despite the adventures of Dory from Finding Nemo, I give it 5 stars.

Oh, one small thing that some other reviewers have also noticed. Their "spicy" dishes, marked by a red chili on the menu, are not spicy at all. Maybe they're playing it safe in their early days in a predominantly white region. The second time around, we repeatedly stressed, "really spicy", and got decent level of spiciness. So if you like your thai food spicy, make sure you stress it to the wait staff.

Yum! I went here on my birthday with some friends and had a wonderful meal (Spicy Thai Basil with Tofu). Their menu is very vegetarian/vegan friendly, and the food can be made very spicy. Nice decor, too.

The service is prompt, but some of the wait staff have difficulty with English.

There is a seemingly endless parade of new restaurants in State College offering Thai food. (Sakura: sushi and Thai. What?) So far, Cozy Thai remains the only one that actually has Thai people making Thai dishes that taste like Thai food.

So what of My Thai? They display all the trappings of an authentic Thai restaurant. Carved wooden welcome sign, pictures of the King, decorative chadaa... but it takes a little more to make a good Thai place than the right decor.

My Thai is an extension of Fuji/Jade Garden. I'd expect this to be readily apparent to anyone familiar with that place, since our first reaction (to a fried fish dish) was... "Wow, this sauce tastes like something from Fuji/Jade Garden." We learned shortly thereafter that My Thai is, indeed, owned and operated by the very same. Judging by the food, it's the same kitchen staff too. I assume that if they only had space in the original place, they would have just made it "Fuji Jade Garden My Thai" and added another dozen pages to the menu.

No one at My Thai is Thai. No one at My Thai can speak Thai. (Here's a fun trick: pronounce the Thai name of a dish correctly when ordering. The waitstaff won't know what you're saying.) No one at My Thai appears to know what Thai food tastes like.

If we'd known this ahead of time, we maybe could have had a better meal. Don't expect to get good Thai food. Is it suitable for a State College palate? Evidently. Is it good "Asian food"? It's not bad, I guess. Oyster sauce and soy sauce... what's not to like?

If you prefer this food to Cozy Thai, it's because you don't like Thai food. And hey, that's fine. Everyone has their preferences.

My first date with my boyfriend was last year around this time at Cozy Thai. Therefore, he and I have a special place for Cozy Thai and did not want to necessarily like any other Thai better. But, we honestly can't help it.

I also tried not to like it because it looks way bigger than what you get at Cozy Thai. But sometimes, size does matter and bigger is really better. I guess it all depends on what you are in the mood for.

We've had the crab rangoons and red curry twice this week-- and its only Tuesday and haven't eaten dinner yet tonight...We're those people that have something once and if we like it eat it all week and then make our own as well. We find ways to recreate it 16 different ways until we're sick of it and move on to something else luscious.

But, I'm afraid My Thai comes the closest to having my curry. Its delicious-- and even better as leftovers.

I usually order a side of vegetables to dump in my empty soupish broth called curry at Cozy Thai. This side of veggies usually consists of carrot circles and a piece of broccoli. The veggie curry at My Thai is like what you would make at home filled with big chunks of vegetables and lots of different colored peppers. They are good about adjusting the heat, as their regular is a bit spicy.

Cozy Thai does have better Jasmine rice though. It has a coconut flavor to it and is a bit sticky. My Thai's is good for regular.

Large Portions, Good Food, and Pleasant Staff.

I always get the green curry even though I don't do too well with spicy food.  Compared to Cozy Thai's green curry there is less variety in vegetables, but the flavor is just as good if not better and the quality of the meat is very good.

My husband always gets the Pad Thai and was more impressed with My Thai because of the bigger portion-size and flavor.

Spring rolls are great.  We had the wrapped shrimp appetizer, only complaint is that one of the shrimps wasn't fully deveined, easy mistake.

Take out gives you even bigger portion of curry, yay for that!

    Don't forget the coupon.

It's more like 3.5... or 3.3. I definitely wouldn't go as far as giving this restaurant 4 stars, because it still has a long way to go to that level.

The portion is big, the food was pretty good, not wonderful, but pretty good. I do think that the flavoring is kinda bland and luke-warm, not bold and daring at all. The service is excellent though. One time the new staff accidentally dropped a thai ice tea on our table and some on my pants. The waitresses cleaned it right away and gave me a complimentary ice thai, which soothed my heart (no, seriously).

It won't be the place that I would intentionally go to eat though. The first time I visited My Thai was to try it out. The rest of my visits were with my friends that wanted to eat here... Yea, they could compromise more than me.

I liked this place. I've never had Thai food before so I was asking the waitress a lot of questions, unfortunately, I couldn't really make out the answers.

Upon pulling up to the place I almost turned around when I noticed the cheap booths that lined the front of the outside of the restaurant. It made the place look like a dump; along with the flashing neon O-P-E-N sign.

Anyhow, I was very hungry so it was 4 course time! The seafood soup was interesting; I've never had anything like it before. Good but a bit watery.  The appetizer was awesome! I forgot name of it but it was the one at the top of the appertizers menu. It was small but I could probably live on that stuff and be content.

I also ordered a coconut milk drink. It was awesome! There was little chunks of coconut in it and had no ice in it. It tasted plain at first but the after taste was slightly sweet.
For the main course...again..... forgot the weird name but it was the first course at the top of the dinner menu. It was big and very good and again, It was like nothing I've ever tasted before.
    Dessert.....ehh.
I wish I went to McDs and got a sundae like I was thinking about doing.
I got the smallest scoop of fried ice-cream
on earth and it wasn't great. Boooo.

In all My Thai was is definitely worth trying out.

How can one not get excited when we have a new restaurant in town?

My Thai seems to follow the recent trend in State College East-Asian restaurants. After Big Bowl and Cozy Thai both relocated and updated their decors to a more modern look, here comes My Thai a small eatery in the Westerly Parkway plaza. Bright colored walls, pitch black tables and chairs, and two medium size room.

The menu is extensive (see the six attached menu pages). Prices are reasonable. Lunch menu is about $8, and specialty dishes are $12-$15.

I ordered a chicken pad thai lunch special takeout. For $8, I first got a small garden salad topped with what I think is two tablespoons of satay sauce as a vinaigrette (pictured). Second, I got the pad thai. It was simple: noodles, sauce, probably the equivalent of a small chicken breast, and some peanuts. The sauce was simple and not particularly distinctive, but the noddles and the chicken mixed well. I wished there was a little more too it though, it wasn't anything special. Portions were good.

I guess this is more of a preliminary review. There are so many options on this menu that I'll have to come back (and dine in). So far, I'm pretty excited. An alternative to the abominously hyped Cozy Thai is most welcomed.

Stopped in for weekend lunch with a friend.  I ordered the tofu pad thai and they used fried tofu puffs, which was a little unexpected, but the flavor was still there and it satisfied my pad thai craving.  My friend ordered the tropical mango dish which she enjoyed.

Service was also pretty friendly and the restaurant decor/atmosphere was nice and comfy.  Haven't been to other Thai places in town, but this was pretty good.

We stumbled across My Thai this weekend while driving through the Goodwill plaza, and vowed to come back. Fast forward two days and here we are. Tiny flags decorated the entry and a large "GRAND OPENING" sign blazed the doorway. Admittedly, I have a serious Cosi Thai bias, so I went in prepared for just an "okay" dining experience. WRONG! My Thai totally exceeded my expectations.

The decor is what I like to call trendy-chic: sleek dark tables, leather dining chairs, colorful pendant lamps, bright glass bowl sinks in the bathroom and hand-painted Thai wall murals. Plates and bowls looked very West Elm: squares and other "organic-modern" shapes. I'd guess the place could seat about 50 or so.

The food was reasonably priced and really tasty. The menu isn't huge, but has a lot of apps, several noodle options (including soups) and a much broader selection of curries than you'll find anywhere else in town.  In fact, I believe My Thai is the only place you can *get*  Masaman curry here in State College (I know Vikki N will like that); the Chiang Mai style curry was spicy and delicious, and the red curry was rich and flavorful. Both of our meals had chicken (and tons of it, I might add), but the menu did have a variety of meats and vegetarian options as entrees. As far as apps go, the pork rolls were the teeniest spring rolls I've ever been served (we're talking mini-weenie size), and the chicken dumplings were served in open wontons, but still very tasty. There were several vegetarian appetizers as well, but we went the carnivorous route this go.

Other things to know: it's not the downtown "scene" but there is plenty of parking in the plaza; also, so far, they do not serve any alcohol (BYO status is still TBD).  The take-out menu was being written up while we were sitting there, and it sounded like the lunch specials were going to be pretty good.

Bottom line: totally worth trying out, ESPECIALLY if you're a big city Thai junkie like myself. I will definitely be back.

It's always good to have more options for Thai food so I'm glad this place opened up.
The curries are very good and you typically get enough for two meals if you order out. Appetizers are tasty too. However for most other dishes I'd prefer Cozy Thai.

Service is quick and responsive. The atmosphere is nice for dinner.
It's conveniently located next to Fuji Jade so I'll often pick up both thai curry and sushi to take home.

Easy-peasy and abundant lot parking right out front. Friendly service and nice decor (thematic but classy). Music choice varied from tolerable to Thai Marvin Gaye. Good food - it meets my standards of authenticity being of western European descent and without an Asia stamp in my passport. It is a bit too salty, enough that all four at the table commented on it. It comes out fast (we scrambled to finish the appetizers as the main dishes were brought to us) and is hot (I mean temp, but they'll spice it to your liking if you ask). You'll get generous portions (read: be prepared to finish about half of it, which is cool with me because I dig leftovers for lunch and maybe even dinner the next day). If the food had been less salty, I easily would've bumped it up to 4 stars. DEFINITELY prefer this over Cosi, the other main Thai option in the area.

    3.5 Stars!

I hit up MyThai last weekend since I had heard good things, but had yet to try it.

The interior was very nice. Modern décor in a small main dining room. There is also an addition room and booths outside.

We started with Chicken Satay and Crispy Tofu. The Satay was one of the better ones I've had in the area. It was bigger and more moist than most. The peanut sauce was also very good. The tofu dish was a bit soft. I probably would not order that again because of its consistency, however the sauce that came with it was delicious.

We ordered the Thai Basil Rice and the Drunken Noodles for our meals. Both were very good, however both dishes were extremely spicy! I like spicy food, especially Thai, but man I was swigging water throughout the meal. WOW! Both dishes were loaded with chili's. The waitress warned us they were hot, but I assumed she meant hot for people who don't eat spicy food. Man I was wrong. My lips were on fire after we finished. So much that we quickly ordered the fried ice cream for dessert. That was excellent as well.

Overall a nice place and a very good meal. Just make sure you can handle the heat or order something that is not labeled spicy. I will definitely return.

another decent Asian/ethnic eatery in town, score!  woo hoo!!  doesn't take much to stir a little excitement in me while living in this culinary famished town.  like most, I visited this place shortly after they opened.

so far tried their pad thai, drunken noodles and chiang mai curry.   tasty.   will be adding this place to my regular rotation of eateries.  dining room is modest in size, contemporary decor, looks clean and feels comfortable.

I don't know how much to trust this town and its Asian restaurants.
If you were to judge this town by the Chinese restaurants, you might end up vomiting a bit if it weren't for the saving grace of Chopstick Express's dinners and Golden Wok's acceptable food; Hunan Wok and Uncle Chen deal some awful food.
There's Viet Thai looming in the old Post Office building, it's good enough, sates the pho craving and the occasional necessity of a fresh spring roll.
Cozy Thai moved and is bigger and more popular than ever, but it's just a bit lacking for some reason.
    And now there's My Thai.
My Thai is awesome. Between me and two other people, we shared the calamari and the fresh spring roll appetizer, I forget exactly what it's called. The calamari is incredible, perfectly cooked, not squishy and chewy, great breading. the spring roll is cut and served more like a sushi roll, but it's absolutely delicious as well. Very prominent herbs in it.
I personally got the Chiang Mai Curry with chicken. First off, their portions are huge. Second off, their food is DELICIOUS. This curry had mango slices, onions, potatoes, pineapple, bell peppers, and okra which was the only part I was not too crazy about. The Drunken Noodle is the best example of that dish I've ever had and their noodle soups are great as well.
This restaurant really went above and beyond what my expectations were, and anyone who likes Southeast Asian food will more than enjoy this.

My Thai serves up excellent Thai food.  We went for lunch.  While the full menu is available, there are numerous lunch specials all priced at $7.95, including choice of small tossed salad with peanut dressing or spicy vegetable soup.  The portions are generous, making it an excellent value.
We started with a green papaya salad to share - crisp, tangy, spicy, and delicious.
Then the lunch entrees arrived.  Mine was basil chicken - excellent - nice and spicy, with plenty of basil leaves and white meat chicken along with onions and peppers.  The Phad Thai (with shrimp) was also exceptional, as was the Khanan - shrimp with asian broccoli and a tasty brown sauce, although the sauce was a bit salty.  Like many Thai restaurants each dish is described by the rice or noodles it includes, the vegetables and seasonings.  After that you decide whether you want it prepared with beef, chicken, shrimp, or tofu and veggies.  Highly recommended - I will be back.

Time for a revision to my earlier review.  My first impression of My Thai was based on the intense curry dishes and amazing use of fresh ingredients.  Hard to say why, but the menu now is approaching mediocre and there is getting less and less to recommend My Thai over other Thai-Vietnamese places in town.  It was quite wonderful and intense during our first visits.  Last evening my dish was bland when I asked it to be ramped up with seasoning.  My wife complained that her noodle dish was reminiscent of Campbells' Tomato with vermicelli noodles.

Below are some first impressions but I don't think my earlier review still applies, as of October, '10...

My Thai is a great ethnic restaurant, in a town not known for the overall quality of its restaurants, ethnic or otherwise.  My family has visited mostly for dinner and we've never been disappointed.  Portions are full to large.

The interior is very comfortable yet practical, with black lacquer tables and chairs and appropriately themed wall hangings.  It is BYOB and I would recommend either a malty beer or gewurztraminer.

The prices are very reasonable and the kitchen does a great job providing a sampler of typical Thai cuisine.  One reviewer mentions the unexpected heat of some selections, even those marked with a pepper symbol.    I personally enjoyed the authenticity, but spoke with the wait staff and they can adjust to one's tolerance levels.  Personally, I found that the heat both pulled the seasonings together while providing a foil for the freshness of the ingredients, such as crunchy green beans or fresh mango in curry coconut sauce.

In all this is one of the better ethnic restaurants in town, if not the best, given the realities of our college town in central PA.
