I'm going to give this place 4 out of 5 stars. I was pretty satisfied with the sandwich, though I'd prefer the bread be a little more crispy. I guess I'm that kind of person... haha.
They made good subs here... with a solid My hero special foot long, which I ordered. It was quite delicious with some tomatoes inside. Some said they don't like this, but I happen to like it. It was pretty solid. I enjoyed it.
I can't say it was the best sub place I ever ate at, but it's going to be one I'm going to go back to. I thought the tomato salad was quite good. The menu doesn't have to be diverse. Sometimes places with a diverse menu are usually awful. Just like that place in the Valley I went to that had Chinese, Mexican and "American" food all on the menu... come on now...
IF you're going to say subway is better than My Hero, you really have got to be kidding. I tasted a solid sub sandwich, while when I go to subway... I taste a very bland sandwich. Yes, they do have that crispy bread there, but it tastes like I'm eating cardboard. And that array of "sauces" are disgusting and taste like nothing. I'll stick to My Hero thank you very much. Besides being cheaper, it's simply better quality than prepackaged "meats" that subway have. Sometimes the people want a simple sandwich without the fancy assortment of bland sauces. In other words, I'll rank My Hero up there with Jersey Mikes in the taste factor... I was quite pleased.
This isn't another run of the mill sub sandwich place... rather, a very solid option if you're around CSUN. And they give CSUN discounts too. The service is very friendly as is the owner (who I heard took over a few years ago from the long-time owners). Hats off to their management for supporting CSUN and the community for so long too.
The only downside is it's cash only... the decor is a tad bit outdated but simple. No problems there.
BTW, the last poster Anthony, mentioned something about the owner being homophobic... I did not experience that and I had rainbow buttons all over my backpack. She was kind to me and I'm pretty flamboyant... I said I would definitely be coming back.
I've been a repeat customer since the 1960s. I was worried when Howie sold the joint, but it's still good.
So good, I'll drive out of my way just for a My Hero sub. There is no other sub sandwich place I can say that about.
My favs are the Pastrami, the Capocollo and Cheese and the Salami and Cheese. Don't tell me you don't like tomatoes; just try it with the tomato salad.
Here's my guarantee: If you don't like it - call me and I'll come finish it for you!
Okay now don't be hating because i gave it a two...maybe its just me...maybe i'm just critical...i dunno...i yelped this place and it got good reviews so i went...first off i'm gonna say the menu wasn't that diverse...and me and sal got what was the most popular which was the My Hero Sandwich and i got the turkey, both foot longs so that we could try them both...we order the potato salad and some sodas...it ended up being like $23 dollars...
I yelped this place and everyone said the tomato salad was a must on any sandwich...all i've got to say was it wasn't that great...i don't get it...it was okay...the bread was soft and warm which was good...the sandwich was okay...not bad...but it was kind of boring...just the meat...and then some globs of mayo...and the tomato on top...it was kinda boring and not that interesting...
the potato salad was disgusting...i can make better potato salad...don't order that...
and the lady was kind of rude to me even though i was really polite and i smiled and everything...maybe she's homophobic because i was with my bf and holding his hand...( no pda...we aren't disgusting we don't do that..) but i was happy and smiley because i was about to have another yelp adventure and she ruined it with her rude tone and snappy words...would i come here again? no...i'd probably go to subway...at least i can get some spinach and feta and olives and it comes with delicious array of sauces like chipotles and sweet onion...haha i'll pass...
Best subs around CSUN. All students should try this Northrudge institution.
I love my hero. I used to work out there in the summer so i tried going more often. the bread is so warm and delish and the tomoato thing is great on any sandwich. Its a great place to go i reccomend it. highly
I've been going to My Hero for the last 30+ years... and its always been a great sub sandwich... Until recently. In the last year, I have been there 3 times - - at which all three times the sub sandwich (My Hero Special) had a bitter tomato taste, ruining the sandwich and the original recipe.
The bread is very good and so are the cold cuts. The price of $4 for a 6" sub is fair. But its the tomato slaw that isn't right. Too bitter. Tomatoes should be sweet, but this mixture is bitter tasting. Does anybody working there try to keep the same taste as the original owner? Do they taste the food they're putting into the sandwiches. Not good. Very disappointing. Will try again in the future, one last time.
I have been coming here as long as I can remember. This was the first place where I realized that sandwiches should take time to make and lunch meat should not be processed. It is an old school deli and that is all. They add a insurmountable amount of slaw to your sandwich which has a bunch of giant pickles in it. I usually end up scraping a lot of them off but it really sets their sandwich apart.
Glad to see this place is still around after my last visit 10 years ago ^_^
Friendly service and a great sub sandwich
Love the tomato salad on the subs~
Hopefully, will be back sooner than in 10 years =P
A while back I decided I don't really like sandwiches. I don't like deli meat and I don't like to eat a lot of bread. I read the praiseful reviews about My Hero and wondered, how good can a sandwich be?
After trying My Hero's, I can say this: I no longer dislike sandwiches...at least the kind made here.
First off, they freshly slice high quality meat as they make the sandwiches, nothing like the deli meat I was used to. The bread, freshly baked, soft, and fluffy, is delicious. Even though I order my sandwiches on wheat, which I normally expect to be bland, I'm always surprised to bite into a delicate and light tasting bread.
I usually get the pastrami, but I also recommend the meatball. They make the tomato sauce from scratch, you can really taste the difference in quality!
This has got to be one of the best sub joints in town and it's been there forever. If you are in Northridge one day, you gotta check them out.
There are some die hard My Hero fans out there (many in my own family); I am not just one of them. Not that it is bad - it's decent, I do really like the tomato salad - there just aren't really enough options for me. It's a little boring.
Truth be told - I'm just so hardcore pro Italia that I have little business left over for My Hero.
I have been coming to My Hero for several years. The two things that make their sandwich are their bread and the tomato salad. Their food is tasty and it is nice to support a mom-and-pop establishment. I dont get to come here that often because Im not really in the area any more but its always on my radar for lunch when Im near by.
boasting arguably the most unique and tastiest sandwiches in northridge along with the friendliest employees you'll ever talk to, my hero is at the top of my list when my stomach is craving a sub. what makes their sandwiches so special is that they steam the bread, making it soft but not too soggy perfectly complementing with your selection of turkey, pastrami or my personal favorite the my hero special. the my hero special comes with a slice of turkey meat along with a delicious tomato salad INSIDE the sub making it moist, juicy, and absolutely to die for.
and if you go to CSUN you get a discount so make sure u bring ur student id! awesome place. if you're ever in the vicinity and are in the mood for some great eating, come to my hero.
Great sandwiches made with love by a friendly staff. Highly recommended over the sandwich chains. Be sure to get their tomato salad on your sandwich. The wheat bread is good, but you need to ask for it.
Great place. Friendly staff, it's always good when the owner of the joint is making the sandwiches... very CSUN friendly with good discounts. Pastrami is good at most hole in the wall sub joints, but the Tuna was excellent here, not too much mayonnaise and with the tomato and onion salad, yes. And fresh bread a huge plus.
Pastrami has been top of the list since my first one at Subway when I was seven. Since then, my taste buds and I have much matured. The pastrami sandwich here is ridiculously tasty, especially with the tomato salad in it. I love that this private little nook celebrates CSUN's achievements. It's touching. On mildly bitter note, this joint is cash only. What -is- it with no credit cards? Sigh. I'm too much of a modern diva, I suppose. :P
This place has the most unique/simple type of sub in town. If you are visiting for the first time, try the Turkey Sub, Mac Salad, and Cheesecake. What makes their sub so special is their tomato salsa and most of all, the soft yummy bread. In addition, the staff there is wonderful.
This is my regular lunch spot, as it was my Father's when he was my age (back when the Kuebler's still owned it and he was attending San Fernando Valley State College - now CSUN). I have yet to find a spot that makes a better cheese sandwich. In fact, I'd take a large #9 from My Hero over a jumbo "Loads of Cheese" from Dan's any day of the week. Rose, Denise and the other ladies are all absolute sweethearts and make me feel like home every time.
It's cash only, which is kind of a drag, but it's not so bad with proper planning and there is the ATM on site for when you have a brainfart.
It's nice to have family owned sandwich shop where you can still be recognized and treated as a regular, and judging by how many times you hear them greet customers by their first name and ask them "the ususal?" it seems as though I'm not the only one who feels this way
I used to live and go to school 2 minutes away from My Hero and ordered the "special" as often as possible (plus, students get a discount). The people there are friendly and service is pretty quick even when it's crowded. Now that it's a bit of a trek, i still drive to Northridge to get my favorite sub and tomato salad. Believe me, it's worth it!
Just don't go there on a Sunday--they're closed!
Amazing amazing amazing!! Best sandwich in the entire Valley. Tomato salad is awesome and is good on the sandwich or on the side. The cheesecake they have for dessert is really good. Very CSUN student friendly (DISCOUNT!!!) Service is great and the lady that owns it is really nice and personable.
I've been going to My Hero for years. The original owner sold it to this favorite employee and the subs lived on. It's an institution in the area, with pictures of CSUN teams on the walls. It's nice to see a small business continue for these many years.
The bread and the fillings are fresh and really good. They have their own style of "pickle salad" that you can get on your sub - highly recommended with turkey.
They far exceed Subway or Quiznos, so if you're near CSUN, it's worth the trip.
Local joint (more than 40 years old!) with friendly and extremely quick service. The interior is clean and the walls are adorned with historical memorabilia relevant to My Hero.
I stopped here last August and ordered a hoagie for lunch. It was tasty (complete with sweet peppers) and inexpensive - I recommend it over any chain sub place!
Huge yay for my hero!
I went to CSUN, of course, and had frequent My Hero eatings. I love the turkey with provolone...most amazing! The tomato sald really sets My Hero apartment from other sandwhich joints. Bread really sets a sandwich, and theirs is always fresh and delicious! To top it off, they dish up some really good macaroni salad, second only to the macaroni salad at Phillipe's (which takes lead in french dips).
My Hero also gives rise to one of my favorite memories with my "baby's- daddy-only-not-so-much" got hard at the sight of a risque text message.
Thanks My Hero for all you do- for my palate, for the kids, and for boners. 3 cheers!
Awesome turkey sub! I love this place
My Hero has been around for ages, and I've been going there since I was 5 years old. Sandwiches served hot with their special tomato salad are what you go there for. My personal favorite is a super 1/2 roast beef and 1/2 pastrami with lite pepperoccinis. It's fantastic. The sandwiches are great and the service is quick.
The place is always clean. This tops any chain sandwich shop.
Good stuff!
Had it for the first time since hearing it about beginning of my freshman year at CSUN. great sub! i think i'll be eating here more often than subway. it's cheaper too with a great staff, interior, and food.
Been going here for my entire life. My dad used t eat at this place when a super sized sandwich cost less than a small coke today. There is no other sub like my hero. It's all about the steamed bread and the chilled tomato salad together. Ohhhh, the tomato salad. I always order mine with extra. I've tried and tried to make this stuff at my house, and always failed. There's something magical going on in there. Wonderful service too. I was a bit worried when the original owner, Howie, sold the place to long time employee Rose a few years back. Rose, however, has done a bang up job. I love this place.
I love the hot pastrami sandwich here and of course you need the tomato salad to make any sandwich here complete. Everything is very fresh. They've been around awhile and are a big part of the Northridge community. My 6 year old loves coming here--which is awesome. They are a little pricey, but I say it's worth it for the taste.
I mean, this place has good food, but it is WAY overpriced. It is like $9 for a footlong, and they don't even load it with that much stuff! The pictures that are up in the place are fun to look at though.
Excellent subs with their signature tomato salad. Food here has been great and consistent for many years.
Been coming to My Hero for 30 years and am never disappointed by the taste, quality, freshness, friendliness, and personal service. I love the pastrami and the my hero special, but they're all great.
This place beats Subway and Quizno's any day! Their ingredients are always fresh and that tomato salad that they put on their sandwiches are beyond words! It's so good, you'll want to order some more on the side! Their Turkey Sub is good and they steam/toast their bread really well giving off that baked bread aroma. The owners, Rose and Denise are extremely nice and recognize me as a regular. They only take cash, but there is an ATM inside. They are very reasonable and caring when it comes to CSUN students since they offer a student discount when you show your ID, If you get a bottled water, save the empty bottle because the next time you go in...you can give them the empty bottle and they'll give you a bottled water for free when you purchase your sandwich. They also offer a club card for you to have them mark every sub you purchase, if you get to the ninth sub the next one's free. In short, fresh ingredients, nice staff, discounts...great for students!
This is my favorite hole-in-the-wall, ghetto-fabulous place in the valley. I give them 5 stars for their great subs, friendly service, and very reasonable prices. Their collection of old pictures on the wall never fails to amuse me.
best sub shop in the valley. very decent prices. and a delicious meatball sub. this place has been around for decades, and it is still a hole in the wall place that is adored by local patrons. you have to try it for yourself
I have been going here for 30 years. he sandwiches are good. But, recently I went in, and as I was paying, Rose and I were deep in conversation, and I wasn't paying much attention. When I was driving home, I realized she only gave me change for a $10, but I gave her a $20 (the only bill I had on me). So, no big deal, I called them and told them to call me at the end of the day when they saw that they were $10 over in the till.....NO call! So next time I went in, I mentioned it to Rose's daughter Denise, and she was incredibly RUDE and condescending! She basically called me a liar! (Like I'm gonna rip off a place I've been going since high school for a measley $10)!!! I couldn't believe it! So, on principal, I will NEVER go there again. Very SAD business sense for such a LOYAL community that has supported Rose since she purchased the place! What a HUGE disappointment.... ~Pathetic!

GREAT food!! Nice hot FRESH bread, awesome signature tomato relish on all sandwiches & nice… Read more »
I tired my first sub in 1964 when I was a kid growing up in Northridge and I have been back many times. The subs are just plain mouth watering. Try the hot pastrami or the hero special. This is no franchise. The owners Rose and her daughter Denise are very kind and care about the quality of their food. With my job I have traveled across the country and I still have not had a better sub then at My Hero. Please give this place a try if you are in Northridge.
very nice workers and has that mom and pop feel. the quality is alright, but it isn't really worth the money in my opinion. i go to csun so if I'm hungry, i will usually get a cheese sandwich there. its nothing special, but it is fresh and filling. very crowded during lunchtime with students and just workers from the area. the decor is nice because not many places are all about csun pride. parking lot blows.
