Simple, good and great staff. The only warning is that you might smell like onion rings if you stay too long in the bar area.
The food is good and an amazing value.
The patio and probably the best area to sit if it is warm enough. -

I recognize that what I am about to say qualifies as an unpopular opinion in Denver. I apologize in advance to the fanboys and fangirls of this darkly lit dive.
I often reference this hole in the wall place, when I am speaking of food that makes me fall immediately into a food coma.
You see, My Brother's Bar specializes in hamburgers. For whatever reason, their burgers make me feel gross. The kind of gross that one would feel if they had went out back, found their grease trap, done the back stroke in said grease trap, then ate a huge burger which had about five lunestas as a condiment. Every time I have been there, I feel too full to finish my beer, so I leave about half a beer. Such a bad thing, to waste your beer. sigh. Why do I continue eating, after I am full, you might ask. The answer is that I never realize how full I am until that last bite. It sneaks up on me, as if this giant absorbent sponge was activated at exactly that time.
They are tasty enough to eat but nothing I would consider "Special".
The menu is not the largest ever. You come here for burgers and sandwiches of that same genre. Here is a link to their menu: http://www.allmenus.co... As you can see, the prices are more than reasonable. Their beer selection is not bad, and the atmosphere is kind of interesting as it really is one of the oldest bars in town.
I hear that they sell those atrocities called Girl Scout Cookies for long periods of the year. If that's your thing (GROSS), you might want to check this place out!Listed in: 100 reviews for 2012?, Burger joints

I went here for a drink after the Broncos game a few weeks ago on a Thursday night and was reminded how awesome this place is.
They have a solid beer selection and the knowledge to recommed stuff to you. That's cool thing #1. They serve a nice variety of bar food quite late into the evening and that's cool thing #2. But the coup de gras and cool thing #3 is the ambience. this place is just drenched in it. If you wanna go some place dark and moody, enjoy some comfort food and a good drink in peace then head here. Maybe I'll see you. -
Review from Amy M.
For over the past year I have wanted to stop in here. Finally decided to during the most recent blizzard. I liked the ambiance immediately. A little historic, a little divey, a little homey. I ordered a beer and cheeseburger. My beer was fresh from the tap and ice cold. I was not however a huge fan of the burger. It was ok but not what I expected. It lacked some flavor and was a little limp. It is cool that they bring over to the table a condiment platter with some onions, etc. I would definately stop back in for a beer but not the burger. Side note the onion rings were crisp and tasty.

Affer being here twice, I believe it is accurate to say "yay, i'm a fan!".
This tiny, dark lit, cozy, oak bar is perfect for grabbing a bite [burgers are amazing!], having a few cocktails [they have just about everything!] and hanging out in a relaxed and easy going environment. My Brothers bar has a way of sucking you into it's character, history and overall feel this bar exudes. I just love it.
I recently stopped by here for a friends birthday and not only was the food awesome, but the service was great. our waitress checked on us often, but not often enough to make her annoying. The drinks were strong [just how i like them!] and the variety of beers on tap was quite extensive. The food=to die for! their burgers, fries and various appetizers are so delicious and make my mouth water just thinking about them!
Prices? not bad at all :)
overall, i love this bar, and know exactly why fellow Denverites do as wel.
Ps. dont' forget to check out the cool patio out back. it's perfect for summer gatherings! -

I usually do not reference other Yelpers' reviews, but in this case, I will make a very general, counter-argument exception for anyone who went under 4 stars:
This is a bar. A great bar. My favorite bar in Denver as a matter of fact. I go and sit up at the bar and talk to the tenders and drink good, quality-mixed booze amongst good, quality people, abuzz with interesting conversation.
If I have someone with me, I might oblige by venturing to the patio or ordering some onion rings or maybe even a burger. But if I am doing this place the way it should be done, I'm sitting up at that original bar with kindly folk and taking it all in for what it is; a great, old haunt of a bar. -
Review from Kate G.
I finally made it to this bar that I have driven past on my bus twice daily for four years and have heard so much about from so many Denver residents. I loved the big printed menus on the wall and the beer selection was pretty great for a dive. I'm also a fan of smaller burgers and these were 1/3 lb according to our waitress but seemed more like 1/4 lb which is just right for me. I had a plain old cheeseburger and it was a simple, classic one with American cheese and a soft, squishy white bread bun that hit the spot. Fancy, gourmet, foofoo burgers and flat, greasy, downhome burgers have equal spots in my heart. These really weren't as greasy as I was expecting, nor was the condiment/topping tray dirty or gross as some of these reviews have mentioned. For under $6, I don't have any complaints. We also shared a $3 double order of french fries and onion rings and the ring I tried was super crunchy and crispy, not soggy, and the batter didn't come off when I took a bite (hate that). A friend at our table ordered a pretzel and for under $3, it was one of those big, doughy ballpark type pretzels with jalapeno cheese sauce that looked amazing. I'd also be curious to come back and try the buffalo chicken tenders and jalapeno poppers. Our service was very fast, though our waitress did accidentally drop a cup of ketchup on my husband's leg, spilling it all over his jeans and both his shoes. She was apologetic and was bustling around in a busy restaurant so it wasn't a huge deal to me. There was some hilarious people watching, the vibe was quite cozy and dimly lit, the classical music is a different but nice touch and I will for sure be back.

They have a great selection of beers to go with the amazing burger. Good prices so I would definitely come back again. The french fries were the only so-so thing I could have gone with out ordering.

They know how to pour a proper pint and/or whiskey, and how to grill a great burger. Past that I'm not sure what I need or expect from a bar, note in my opinion this is a bar not a restaurant and as such service expectations should be adjusted accordingly.
I love the classical music, I love how it hasn't and won't change, and I love all the other details that others appear not to appreciate.
Their loss, my gain. -

Denver, CO
terrible service. I met a friend here and asked the guy sitting at the front door (who was listening to his headphones) where to sit, he responded anywhere you'd like.. well, can I get a menu while I wait for my friend to pay his tab? His response was- the menu is written on the wall. Okay, so I have to stand in front of this wall and read over the menu? Once we sat down (at a table that had no view of the glorious wall with the menu) I asked the server for a menu, which she promptly brought us.. but by then I was so annoyed by the guy that couldn't take off his headphones to accomodate the guest standing around waiting for her friend to pay his bar tab before sitting, I just had to leave... Hey, it's called customer service, google it sometime...

Washington, DC
More like 2.5 stars, and the burger with the jalapeño cream cheese is directly responsible for one of those stars.
This place is ... interesting? I hear it is the oldest bar in Denver, but does that mean you need to play classical music in the bathroom? I doubt this bar was around when Vivaldi composed the Four Seasons, so I am not sure how these things are related. The classical music in the bathroom was weird, but not as weird as the miserable, mean bartender who was blatantly ogling me when he wasn't being a complete dick to me and/or my friends.
I dig the back patio area. It had plenty of tables and chairs, lots of trees and cute little hanging lanterns strung around. Coming from DC where most patios are street side, this was a nice cozy change of pace.
The place was huge and easily accommodated the wedding party/friends (40 or so people) who came to get drunk after a baseball game and before the more serious events of the weekend began. The service was very slow and had a difficult time keeping checks straight, and I imagine I would have ended up with a very bad taste in my mouth (despite the jalapeno cream cheese burger) if I had been the one trying to figure it out at the end of the night.
Also, what is up with having the service bar right in the middle of the bar in the middle of the restaurant? Wouldn't it make more sense to put the service bar at the smaller, shorter side of the bar where people are less likely to congregate? If one more bitchy, tatted up waitress tells me "I need to move" because I am standing where any normal person would stand when trying to order a drink, I am going to punch her in her Oregon-shaped tattoo.
To be honest, I had fun, the space is large, the back patio is pretty and the beer selection is decent. And did I mentioned the jalapeno cream cheese burger? If the service at MBB was a little nicer and if the place was closer to downtown and/or had more cabs around it, I would go back next time I visit Denver. But just for the jalapeno cream cheese. -

By far the best burgers and bar tenders in Denver! With no TV's and classical music playing in the background, you're bound to actually have a conversation in this bar. I never fail to meet someone interesting or learn a little history at the oldest bar in Denver.

If you just want to drink this is a good bar, but do not order food. I write this still feeling queasy with a strange film coating in my mouth. I got the Johnny's burger on Nov 11 which is one of the worst burgers I've ever ordered. It tasted like a cheap microwaved patty which was slapped on my table in a grease soaked wrapper.
The waitress was rude and the bathrooms stunk!
However, the beer was great. -
Review from Shalan G.
I was tempted into this place by the lure of the classical music. Expecting a café or an elegant bar, I walked in to be greeted by what looked like an old dark saloon from a bygone era. Dark, aged and rather mellow, with a faint smell of what I shall put down to age.
The place is filled with girl scout cookies - thankfully I am not a fan, or this would be a costly and too close for comfort addiction.
It's a neighbourhood watering hole that has cheap, greasy & delicious eats; burgers come individually wrapped with a huge condiment tray filled with pickles, onions, jalapeños et al.
Plenty of beers and alcohol to keep the spirits afloat!
Laid back & friendly service coupled with tight seating makes this rather too cosy for my liking.
They have a patio in the back, that allows smoking, I believe.
It's a great place to bring your out of town red-neck guests, or enjoy once in a while when you simply *must* have greasy food.
And good luck trying to find this gem - no signs, no name, no website; remember I said bygone era? -

Great place - my three year old son and I stopped here for lunch and it was great. Great for kids, greeted with a balloon and perfect kids menu. Great atmosphere - I would like to go back for some adult time!

Review from Jeremy T.
One of my favorite places in Denver. The mediocre, grumpy service that delivers tasty, juicy, reasonably-priced burgers (their deli-like menu is formidable) and good drinks is welcome -- when they decide to finally stop by your table.
I love the little sauce/condiment cart that comes with one's order.
Bring some good company and enjoy a few hours eating food that's pretty bad for you. Great patio, too. -
Review from David M.
Denver, CO
This place used to be awesome. Went there last night and it was terrible. The service was probably the worst I have ever had, the watress was sitting off doing the crossword puzzle instead of attending to her guests. Not once did she come to our table to ask how we were doing, I had to go to the bartender to get a glass of water. I had wanted to get more beers but after her lack of attention we didn't want to stick around. I had the double cheeseburger and my wife had the ham and cheese. The burger was dry and overcooked, the bun was completely smashed. It looked like it had been sitting around for way too long before getting to the table. My wife's ham and cheese was missing the cheese and had some mysterious red sauce on it.
This used to be one of my favorite places to go to for a burger and beers but I don't think I'm going to go back after this. -

I'd have to really lower my standards to give My Brother's Bar a good rating. Your brother must have been the runt of the family.
A really good burger falls into one of two categories, preferably the first: a) a big, greasy mess on a bun that drools on your pants and leaves you full for the day, or b) something so sublime you want to eat it with a knife and fork. MBB has neither, and is without any distinguishing characteristic other than location.
I tried to think under what circumstances I'd eat at MBB on a regular basis, and about the only thing I could think of was if I worked across the street and forgot my lunch all the time.
The little condiment spaceship the servers leave on the sticky, over-laquered tables contains a lot of pickles and pepperocini, but if that's what I remember most about the joint, the rest must be forgettable. -

4 stars for being one of the better dive bars in Denver. It's a small pub-like feel with dim lighting, no TV's (which is fantastic & hard to find), greasy food and reasonably priced drinks.
My good friend lives right across the street so it's a favorite spot to unwind after a long week. Chow down on one of their heart-stoppingly delicious burgers with a side of grease dripping onions rings. Wash it all down with a cold brew or whiskey on the rocks. Welcome to America.
The one downside is the staff. I haven't had much luck with good service. I'm not talking about an upbeat, dazzle me with your best Tom Cruise Cocktail impression either. Just a friendly down to earth server who wants to take care of his customers. They're not discourteous by any means, I figure it's just the culture of a local pub.
*Added bonus: there are girl scout cookies lining the walls... and they're for sale! Great late night snack if you and Jack have been hanging out all night.Listed in: Places You Can Wear Your 2nd…

Is there ANYTHING on the menu that doesn't already get delivered pre-shredded and pre-portioned by a big truck to this restaurant???
I doubt the kitchen owns a decent knife to cut anything with IF they bought anything not already pre-made or friable. The burgers come frozen in a huge SYSCO box, and it's the cheap kind. The guests eat on disposable ware. It's pretty sad and irresponsible.
Location and patio not bad, however. Really don't understand the following they get. -

Years before I moved to Denver I read an old magazine article on the Beats on microfilm at a public library as a part of a high school research project. The article mentioned Kerouac living on wax paper wrapped hamburgers and beers from a place called My Brother's. Eventually, I made my way West. After a year or so I moved to Highlands and realized that this bar was still open and about a ten minute walk from my apartment.
So, yes, My Brother's gets some points for being historic/storied/whatever. But you can't really coast along on a reputation (let alone stay open as a restaurant) of being historical.
They make burgers that are like, well, BURGERS. Juicy, a little greasy, you're basic recipe from a Jimmy Buffet song. They don't try to dress the place up. They know what they do and they do it very well. Beer selection on tap is pretty good. Service isn't the greatest in the world, but this is a place for burgers, not a Kevin Taylor restaurant.
If I could still eat hamburgers all the time and not be a candidate to bolster America's obesity statistics, I would be a regular here. So My Brother's is a treat to myself when I really need a good old fashioned burger. -

I don't know why I hadn't reviewed My Brother's Bar before, but here we go.
Enjoyed the food, enjoyed the service, enjoyed the atmosphere of the bar, enjoyed everything about it.
Will definitely be back just to hang out at the bar if nothing else. -

The atmosphere is fantastic for a good pub: dimly lit, classical music, dark wooden walls.
The burgers are quite tasty (try the J.C.B. - jalapeño & cream cheese) and the beer selection is solid.
If it were closer to where I lived, I'd be a regular. -

Maybe I just didn't spend enough time in My Brother's Bar, but I wasn't blown away.
Had the bum steer (3 meats and cheese) sandwich and a cold beer, and both were good, but not spectacular. Service was good, but not spectacular.
They go from 2 to 3 stars for the history. Staring at the large picture of the place from the 1940's or whatever in the back, and seeing that the place has hardly changed at all is pretty cool. -
Review from Jodie K.
When the manfriend takes me for burgers we go to one of two places. LoHi Steak Bar over the bridge into Highland or the oldest continually operating saloon in the city, a joint on a corner on the edge of downtown. Dark and wooden inside but with a surprisingly charming patio out back, all wobbly tables and mismatched chairs.
Oh, and there's no name on the door.
We go for the burgers and the drinks. And for Paul. He knows manfriend from music (the local scene is more than incestuous; you can't swing a drunk girl without hitting someone-who-knows-someone-who-sang-with-that one-who-played-an-open-mic-with that one. And like Pamela Des Barres, I like being with the band.) Paul shakes what I've declared the best dirty martini, slight on brine, perfectly icy premium vodka (make mine Grey Goose, the true Dirty Bird) and floating three giant olives. He never overclouds with brine, more Catholic school dirty than truly filthy. Perfection. He's a good guy, and may even share a shot of "end-of-shift" Ouzo with you. Opa!!
My nosh and (other, can't call it second 'cause I have love to go around) Denver favorite is the The Johnny Burger. Grilled on a silver flat top, wrapped in paper (forget plates!) and piled with caramel-colored grilled onions and three kinds of cheese; one a happy yellow another a smear of jalapeño cream cheese. When you pull buns apart to add extra pickles (at least five chips) strings unearth in a cartoonish, cheesey melt. Best with lettuce and tomatoes, it's a messy, glorious, juicy and hot handful of love.
LoHi Steakbar and My Brother's Bar are like brothers from another mother, related but unique and each carry the other half of this amulet. Bars at heart, but familyish-friendly (both pubs and barstools on one side, tables, chairs and booths on the other). Brother's less polished, the older and wiser of the duo.
Don't forget the Girl Scouts, cookie. The owner buys (rumor has it) $20,000 worth of cookies from the Scouts each year and resells them at face to customers until they run out. At the height of cookie madness, boxes line every wall, nook and cranny.
And boy howdy Tagalongs® go well with Guinness. -

Anyone giving this joint less than four stars . . . I DARE you to go find a better burger/beer on draft/whiskey selection at seven on Friday or Saturday. Double dog dare.
This bar is for real people, and quite honestly - not for foodies, or yelpers. And I'm both on occasion.
I can't count the number of times I've enjoyed a beer and a burger at 1 or 1:30 AM here, late because I work in the industry, DEEP inside the industry, and I have for some time. Nobody does this "concept," which is really just habit by now, the way Brother's does . .. and that's why I love them.
My last experience, for example, was with my brother at the bar - cliche as that sounds. Beers, whiskey, burgers. Manic conversation, erratic demands, uninterrupted by SUPER PRO bartender. Our whistles never once ran dry, our eyes never caught a glimpse of disdain, and we ordered burgers at 1:30 AM. Seriously.
The bartenders here are what you want them to be. Interested/engaging or quiet/attentive. If you're wearing a sport coat, or "well dressed and well mannered," go someplace that cares about your self-importance. This joint is about honest food and honest service. No pretensions or BS.
If you ARE here on a Friday or Saturday at seven, imagine the difference between Brother's and Applebee's or Chili's or Bennigan's. Or sell your soul. Whichever. -
Review from Angela A.
My Brother's Bar makes me want to curl up & take a nap! With the dark wood surrounding me, the beer flowin, and right now the heat is cranked *yawn*. It's so cozy, because it's pretty tight and they squeeze you in. I wish they had a fireplace-that would be so perfect there!
Love the beer list, and the prices aren't bad. I haven't eaten here though. I think how they serve up the burgers and fries in those cute thing-a-ma-bob's though, pretty clever but it seems as though they take up a lot of room on the tables and doesn't seem to quite fit in with the ambiance (classical music in the background, dark wood) Just a bit of a strange mash up goin on at My Brother's Bar. -

A beautiful old bar that happens to serve great burgers.
When we stopped in here a few years ago, I had what I considered a respectable mustache. I enjoyed the attention it brought, which consisted mostly of compliments from bros and creeped out sneers from the ladies. The old hand tending bar at MBB, though, had a handlebar mustache that would have made Rollie Fingers proud. Hell, it may have been Rollie Fingers himself. Wiping off the bar, Rollie sized up his competition and cracked, "well, that's a noble experiment you have going there."
Insults that good must be appreciated. At that point, I knew this gentleman would not offer anyone an inferior product. Naturally my burger was excellent. Four stars. -

Landed at the airport 30min ago and drove straight here, what else is there to know? Great, comfortable restaurant/bar. Ordered the JCB (jalapeno cream cheese) burger, very good beer selection, girl scout cookie boxes available for a few months every year. Really reasonable prices as well, we each had a burger and a drink and got out for under $20, go once and you'll be hooked. I saw some of the other reviews that mentioned not great service, that has not been my experience - we had great service this time and that is what I remember getting when we are here.

I've only been here once, but it was fun. Something different to do if you want to get away from the typical downtown scene. Nice location by Commons Park area, low key crowd.

Nice place to have a burger for lunch or dinner. You have a choice of beef or bison. I had the bison which was less flavorful than beef but is less fatty. My burger had a selection of cheeses and was slightly spicy from the jalapenos. Expect to get messy as the burgers are large and tend to get all squishy.
They did mess up my colleagues' orders so they get dinged one star. Oddly, they play classical music...what's up with that? -

Fantastic burgers in a great location with nice ambiance. Love the pickle bar, as others have noted.
The beer selection is OK, but a little light on the number of offerings.
Still, I'm here for the burgers, not the beer. Anything will do just fine to wash down that deliciousness. -

I LOVE MY BROTHER'S BAR!
It's one of those places that I like to stop by when I'm in Denver to do something else, but I'll always make time to go here. Their Burgers are AMAZING (but i wish that they came with lettuce and tomato, which you have to pay extra for), and I can't leave without ordering a glass of lemonade and a side of combo onion rings and fries. SOO GOOD! It's a small place and there are always a lot of people but it is worth it. They have a very eclectic mix of beers and other drinks and they just do a great job! -

I was really looking forward to checking out My Brother's Bar. Had only heard good things from co-workers and friends about this historic Denver bar.
I went with 3 friends last weekend and we waited about 10 minutes for the waitress to come by and give us a menu. She asked if we were ready to order and we said just give us another minute since we'd just gotten the drink menu. 20 minutes later she FINALLY came back and took our order. The whole experience moved at a glacial pace. Yes, it was busy but we weren't getting food, just beers. Not to mention the waitress was one of the most unfriendly people I've encountered in the service industry in a long time. I think this bar deserves another shot and I'd like to try their burgers at some point. All in all I'm sad that this was my experience but maybe it was just a bad waitress and we'll have a better experience next time. -

I love this bar but....
Worst. Service. Ever.
We were hungry for a bite after a concert, my friend was in town and I thought it would be a cool place to take her because its such a Denver staple. WELL, if its THAT much of an inconvenience that we ordered food at 12:15, then don't keep your kitchen OPEN til 1am. Right after we placed our food orders, we heard our waitress not 10 feet away loudly express how SORRY she was to be placing a food order with the cook. wow, its not possible to make me more uncomfortable and unwelcome. Note to waitstaff... i do what you do and I know how to be nice to people because its my JOB. customers pay your bills so don't be such a bitch next time.
one star because the food always hits the spot. JCB is my bf's absolute fav
another star because the bartender said more to us from behind his bar than our server did the entire time we were there and he's waited on us before and I like him
and one more star because despite the waitstaff i will be back here. but i will never sit anywhere other than the bar -

My Brother's Bar is in the hood of my new office. I'm really happy to be so close to it now because I don't have to worry about parking which was always a pain.
As a CU grad it always makes me smile when I eat a Ralphie burger and it tastes good too. I recommend sitting on the patio if it is warm enough. -

This is my go to spot for a late night snack when I'm not quite done knocking back the spirits. The food is nothing much to speak of, but the kitchen is open until 2am closing, so you can't beat that.
I've always enjoyed the ambiance of this place. It never seems to be overly crowded, but instead, is just the perfect spot to catch up with an old friend over a beer or G&T. The staff is pretty friendly as well.
Oh, and the Girl Scout cookies! Need I say more. -
Review from Laura L.
Huntsville, AL
It pains me to give this bar three stars, because I have such great affection for their burgers. However, my last visit left a little to be desired, even though they went out of their way to make space for a big group on the patio.
1. Wow, is there anything you can do about the sewage stench on the patio? Our table was placed directly over the manhole cover and although the holes were artfully plugged with some paper towels, it didn't really help. That will put a damper on anyone's happy hour. I would find it surprising that they don't know about this.
2. Service was scattered. Again, I appreciate that they made a special setup for our potentially large group, but getting service for said group was hit or miss. Water refills were hard to come by and our server left the table when there were still orders to be had. As a head's up, they will not make separate tabs for your table. We had an automatic gratuity added for our party of 9, and normally I wouldn't fuss about that except for the things mentioned above.
I know that I'll be back because I like this bar, but I'll pass on the patio from now on. You are warned!Listed in: Patios, Bars, Bars, Bars, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, Office Hours
