Went here with a big group from work for lunch one day. Be careful not to miss it as you drive down 33, because it's in one of those plazas that it's a little tricky to find the right entrance. Once you get in, the decor is pretty impressive and unique.
I'm usually not a huge fan of Greek food, but this place is pretty good. They have a very extensive lunch menu. I had the souvlaki bowl and it was delicious. All of us who had the bowls enjoyed them - although, everyone enjoyed everything really! The portions were huge and the prices were pretty good.
One of the best parts actually was the bread they brought to the table when we sat down, and the dip that came with it.... I'm not sure what it was, but it was pretty darn amazing =D
It wasn't until I moved away from Columbus and was only back in town visiting that I decided to try My Big Fat Greek Kuzina. I felt that the service was fantastic and the menu was divine. I only stopped in for lunch, so I ordered the bowl of Lentil Soup- such a simple dish but it had so MUCH flavor! Loved it. Also, the pita together with that green dip= heaven on your tongue.
It was my first time having Greek in Columbus, and My Big Fat Greek Kuzina, located in the Scioto River Shopping Center, didn't disappoint. The atmosphere is very much both a cozy family restaurant cum fun reunion spot for friends.
The hostess and waitress we received were friendly to everyone (and there were lots of huge parties with several children in tow), and that made the restaurant have a very positive vibe.
I had the calamari w/ kalamata olives pasta that was standard fanfare for seafood pasta (of which I am learning I am not too much of a fan, despite my love of all things sea). The bread and dipping sauce that comes piping hot out of the kitchen to satiate hungry folk is delightfully delicious and I found myself almost squealing when a server plopped down more as we waited for the rest of our party.
I would definitely go again and try more of the menu, but I doubt I'd finish it all. Portions are very generous for the price range!
I definitely had a five-star meal. I ordered the lamb kabobs. They came with green and red peppers in a tomato sauce, served on top of the lamb. The lamb was served on rice and accompanied by a medley of green veggies (zuccini, green beans, etc).
Everything was cooked to perfection. The lamb was tender, the rice was perfectly cooked and delicious, and the vegetables were also perfect. Along with the hummus that's included, and I didn't have room for dessert.
As an aside, I've known the owner for over thirty years, ever since he owned Fisherman's Wharf on Morse Road. We used to live on the same street. Small world.
My Big Fat Greek Kuizina is my new favorite Columbus restaurant. My boyfriend and I went there to celebrate finishing a year of grad school. As soon as we were seated they brought us a wedge of pita slices and a little bowl filled with an amazing pesto-like dip; my boyfriend said it reminded him a little of mint chutney (a dip you often get with Indian food). We loved it so much we kept asking our obliging waiter to bring us more throughout the meal.
We split a bottle of the Santa Marina red wine ($20), which is Greek. It was delicious - light and sweet, like Chianti. We had the sauteed calamari ($8) to start. The white wine sauce was delicious but it didn't stick to the calamari well - we ended up having to spoon up each piece of calamari surrounded by sauce and trying to eat the whole spoonful at once so we wouldn't be left chewing tasteless squid. I think next time I would get one of their many other appetizers like the fried feta with marinara or the spanikopita.
For dinner I got the stuffed flounder ($17), which was incredibly rich and delicious. It was filled with a seafood medley and covered with a cream sauce. My boyfriend got the lamb shank ($16), which he praised unhesitatingly throughout the meal. The meat was tender and just fell off the bone and was covered with a tasty sauce. Both meals were served with two side dishes - rice pilaf and veggies. The pita dip was really tasty atop the veggies.
We were too full for dessert but they had a nice variety as well as several after-dinner drink selections. Also I should mention that our waiter was extremely skilled. He was very attentive without being around too much - it just seemed like as soon as we needed something, he was there before we could even think to ask. I also liked that he let us enjoy our wine for ten or fifteen minutes after dinner without bringing the check or making us feel rushed in any way. Overall, a very pleasant experience. We'll be back again as soon as we can afford it.
Fantastic food and atmosphere. The portions are great!! Plenty to eat.
Lentil soup was tasty. Stuffed mushrooms were very good and filling. Food was salty. Definitely would go back.
Very tasty greek food! I frequent this restaurant often with friends. The chicken gyros are well seasoned and the tzaki sauce is garlicy and delicious. I really recommend this restaurant!
This restaurant is worth it for the green hummus-garlic-appetizer that comes free with dinner entrees. Too bad they recently raised their prices but such is the recession I suppose...A+!
I have been going here for a few years and I have never been disappointed. The service has always been warm, friendly and attentive. Comfortable atmosphere, great food and drinks. I have also stopped in to get some of their delicious dips and pita at their "to go" counter, and they have also been great. One suggestion - have white table cloths for a more elegant look that they deserve. I thought I remember them having them in the past?
Maybe I haven't had much Greek food in my life but My Big Fat Greek Cuisina is the best Greek food I've ever had, anywhere, period. Done.
Everything here is superb, from the details to the desserts. The décor is fun without being ridiculous. The whole place has a feeling of casual class, big Sunday dinners with the family, good times. The food is simply delicious. Even a bite of my friend's salmon left me impressed, and I've hated salmon since I was a wee lad (perhaps my father just never cooked it right, in retrospect- I might order it next time I'm here it was so good).
From the moment you get your warm pita bread to the moment you leave, this place will have you smiling and gasping with delight. It's a superlative place- a great restaurant staffed by great people who serve amazing, amazing, amazing food. Found it through Yelp and damn, everyone was right about this place. Excellent! A must-go in Columbus.
I went here on a business trip because a friend of mine recommended it. When you walk into this place, think GREEK. It's owned by a greek family. greek decorations, greek food...can't get more greek;-) I had the seafood kabob and it was delicious...I also ordered the mini-greek salad...it wasn't so mini but delicious!
My first time at Big Fat Greek Cuisine was a blur. My dining companion and I sent our poor waiter back a few times since we talked about everything but the menu for a good half hour before finally deciding on what to order. We munched on the pita bread while looking over the menu. The paired dipping sauce resembled guacamole in color, not so much in taste as it was very limy and just as garlicky. He ordered the gyro with fries and coffee. (One caveat: it's one heck of an extensive coffee menu and there may be ouzo in your coffee if you don't look carefully at your selection.) Not wanting a messy dinner, I stuck to a dish that would require utensils: the chicken kabob.
My friend's gyro came out piled high with meat, tzatziki sauce, tomato, and lettuce; his was going to be a messy meal alright. My chicken kabob was placed on top of a bed of rice pilaf. While I've always ordered chicken kabobs at Turkish restaurants, I noticed that the kabobs were prepared differently here. Instead of having it grilled with spices, they layered the skewer of chicken with sauce I'm not familiar with. That's not to say it wasn't good. It was just... different. Portions were beyond generous as side vegetables accompanied my dish. I recalled barely finishing half of my dish while he simply finished his gyro.
The second time I stepped inside this restaurant was with one of my best friends during her visit to Columbus. This time I was a bit more daring and ordered the stuffed flounder while she ordered the chicken gyros. The stuffed flounder came with the rice pilaf and the side vegetables just like the chicken kabobs and oh-so-delectable! Never mind that it was lunchtime, the portions were just as big.
Don't ask why it took me so long to finally check out Big Fat Greek Cuisine; I mean I've only driven by it everyday for the past four years. Now that I've discovered this hidden gem, I'll have to say that I'll be back for a third time. Who knows? Maybe I'll have to try the gyro myself!
Big Fat Greek Cuisine is probably one of the best first date dinner places in town as well. If worse comes to worse and you or your date can't think of anything else to talk about, you can definitely talk about how it feels like you've warped back to ancient Greece by simply stepping inside the restaurant! I kid you not. The inside is that beautiful.
Stopping by Columbus on our road trip, I and a friend decided to try Yelp's most highly recommended restaurant in the area. We came in and sat in the waiting area for 10 minutes before someone started talking to us (although we did get a lot of eye contact during that time). Our waitress didn't seem to be comfortable smiling. We probably waited 40 minutes before our entree came.
My friend had the turkey & cheese panini and fries. He was not impressed.
I had the lamb chops with rice and vegetables. The rice and vegies did not impress me in flavors or texture. The lamb was really tender and I was impressed for 5 seconds when the saltiness kicked in. I would say that the saltiness of the lamb and the gravy ruined the ...lamb and the gravy .
I and my friend didn't get the awesome impression that everyone here did. But I did enjoy the decor.
Like the film that inspired the restaurant's name, My Big Fat Greek Kuisina (or Cuisina, if you check the menus!) is a surprising underdog of a find. Tucked away in a shopping center at the corner of Fishinger Rd. and Dublin Rd., the restaurant is unassuming from the outside. The interior is fun and authentic-ish without being overwhelming and gaudy. Painted on the walls are murals of famous Greek landmarks. Somehow it worked. The table settings are well done as well. The place also has a large bar -- though no one was at it during the late lunch hour I visited.
All-in-all, I was shocked by the classy decor of the restaurant. Maybe I've just been visiting too many hole-in-the-wall joints.
Now for the food. Tables are all served a complimentary appetizer of pita bread and Greek pesto. It was beyond tasty. The bread was warm and soft. Coupled with the basil-laden pesto, it was irresistible.
My wife and I were unadventurous on this occasion. We both ordered the gyro. It was big and fat, as the restaurant's name might have hinted. The meat was tender and the tsatsiki sauce was packed with cucumbery goodness.
We had the baklava for dessert, and it was flaky and sweet.
Our waitress was very helpful, and the prices were reasonable. We'll be visiting again.
I tried out Big Fat Greek Cuisine based on the other reviews here, and it was dead on!
We walked in on a Sunday afternoon and were seated right away, despite a Big Fat Greek Reunion taking place in the middle of the Restaurant. I felt a little under dressed, but that could be because the rest of the clientle was still in their Sunday best.
Our waiter was extremely nice and helpful, and even suggested some dishes for us when he heard it was our first time, and we started out with an appetizer sampling the various dips and spreads for fresh pita. I dined on a Gyro Platter that rested on a scrumptious Greek Salad. It was almost exactly like the Gyro Platter at The Happy Greek, but that is delicious as well, so no complaints! The boyfriend tried something with eggplant in it, and was quite satisfied although he couldn't finish all of it. Our friend had a Salmon dish, that he stated tasted fantastic, but later gave him "the shits". Despite this risk that you run into when you eat seafood in the Midwest, we are more than willing to go back and eat there again.
As if "My BIG FAT GREEK Cuisina" needs another perfect review! However, I couldn't help myself. Unassuming and somewhat gaudy, this gem of Columbus has become one of my absolute FAVORITE places to visit when in town. I try something different on the menu every time and always leave pleasantly surprised and pleasantly stuffed! Might I recommend their dessert wine? If you are looking for a nice quiet candlelit dinner you might want to look elsewhere-- this place gets packed and can be VERY loud inside.
It's hard to find fault with this place. The food is without a doubt THE best in town imo. From the minute you sit down, you are in for a treat. The complementary pita and dip is divine (it's easy to fill up on this before your meal arrives, so be careful!). The gyro platter ($7 lunch, $8 dinner) is delicious - the gyro meat is lean and delicately spiced, the seasoned fries are crunchy and hand-cut, and the house dressing is wickedly garlicky. Also worthy of note are the gourmet salads (about $10 lunch, $12 dinner). Be warned, these salads are absolutely huge, and are bursting with fresh veggies, olives and feta. SO filling! The seafood selection is pretty impressive too ($10 - $16). Check out the stuffed flounder ($11 lunch, $15 dinner). You won't be disappointed! Apart from the falafel (super dry and tasteless), everything is absolutely outstanding.
Service is first class, and it doesn't matter if you're dressed up to the nines or slumming it in tshirt and shorts, they are friendly, attentive and efficient. Also, it's worth visiting for the quirky decor alone - check out the murals, and faux Classical sculptures. I LOVE this place, and would eat the keftedes every week if I could. Oh, and they have a carry-out next door.
Easily the best Greek food I've had in Columbus. Hands down -- you in the back, I said put your hand down.
Don't be misled by the obnoxious logo, the place is a sit-down, classy dining affair. But they also have a quick carry-out service with individual slices of baklava ready to go.
It's Greek food. It's great. Go get it.
As an alternative, I've heard the Happy Greek is very good as well, but I haven't tried it as yet.
Big Fat Greek has all your favorite Greek dishes... Gyro, Moussaka, spanakopita, and of course baklava. Our meal started with a large plate of pita to keep the kids happy while we waited for the entrees. The food was served quickly and was delicious.
The large dining room that is a little over the top with the Greek theme. A large neon parthonon is the backdrop for the bar and fo-pillars are scattered around the room. The kids loved the Greek music playing over the radio and were dancing in the booth.
Big Fat Greek was very family oriented providing is with a high chair and a bag of candy for the kid after the meal. The service was friendly and quick.
Just in case you need a quick fix for that Greek craving, Big Fat Greek has a special take out window and accepts call ahead orders.
Again, thanks yelpers! We walked in on a friday night, it was very busy and was going to be a 15 min wait so we decided to seat ourselves at the bar. The waitress that night was very cool, friendly and very helpful. She knew we were hungry and brought those pitas right out. YUMMY. So soft, i just love the smell of warm fresh pitas. Food was good, portion sizes excellent. I was more than full when i left. Decent prices, cozy atmosphere. I'll be back!
I LOVE this place. I found Big Fat Greek Cuzina completely randomly, driving along one day while hungry. They have amazing Falafel Greek Salads and Gyros. They serve great pita with sauce to tide you over.
The decor is a little over the top, but in an incredibly lovely, Big Fat Greek Wedding kind of way... definitely worth going out of your way for.
This has to be the most authentic greek restaurant in the columbus area. They aren't afraid to use spices. The menu selection is terrific, traditional - including desserts, wine, kaffe. I shared sauteed calimari and dolmades for appetizer - both delicious. I had Mousaka for dinner and it was too big (for me) but I enjoyed it the next day as well. It was really really good. They have good selection of specials, including cocktails, and a fun/lively atmosphere. All of the staff were really terrific. It honestly doesn't look like much from the outside but what a surprise. I was expecting it to be a little busier but I like to eat late. I was in greece last year and this has to be the closest to the real thing I've had here in columbus. My only 1 little gripe, food came so fast!!!!!!!!!!! It was piping hot and really good but I felt like I was in and out of there in 30 min! Take your time ordering!!
