Are they kidding with the hours they're open?  Time to expand to later than 7pm.  Also, they are rude, and it takes forever to get the food.  Sure, if you can put up with their nonsense, their food is decent, but there are other places that do good sandwiches.  Parking sux.  Skip MVPs.

I'm so despondent about my search for a great burger in Long Beach.

After reading the reviews on Yelp I was so excited that this might be the place, so I made myself a lunch date and tried it out.

Meh.

My burger was overcooked, just a thick, tasteless slab of grey. I wish I had more to say about it but really it was just a large unseasoned blob. 1/3" burgers are great, if they are cooked medium and seasoned. This was neither.

I do appreciate that you have the option of seasoned or regular fries, so I tried the seasoned fries. They were crispy and tasty, but there were so many of them that I got real tired of the "cajun" seasoning after about a dozen.

My coke tasted like it had cleaning products in it. Gross.

I have not given up on MVP. I like their sketchy streetside facade. But they are definitely on burger probation. One more experience like this and they are off the list.

with high gas prices these days, i want to like this little burger shanty within walking distance of home, but i wasn't impressed with the burger. a sizable, unseasoned patty that is evenly cooked, it was too done for my taste. i can barely taste the meat juices that make a burger good. the cajun fries, whose spices give it a kick are good, and the same spices are mixed with mayo to make their cajunnaise, which can be found on their burgers, but even that's not enough to make it a memorable burger. oh, and they give you a ridiculous amount of fries in the combo. next time i'll be sharing.

they offer salads as well as grilled and cold sandwiches. i may return to try the gardenburger.

Although I've lived within a two mile radius of MVP's for a number of years, I had not yet engorged myself until last tuesday.  I know, totally asinine.

I decided on a Pat Day and a half order of fries to go.  The menu was surprisingly diverse (I almost felt guilty selecting something as simple as a traditional patty melt) and the general aura around the small building was reeling with gluttonous satisfaction.

While not as gut-bustingly amazing as I expected, the meal was pretty darn exceptional.  The burger was fresh and flavorful and the brick of fries paired amazingly well with a side of the "cajunaise."  And yes, I had enough starch left over to feed a late-evening craving.

I now understand the local penchant for MVP's.  Comfort food from a shack is always so damn effective.  I need me a shack.

who knew? this place hits the spot for a good burger and cajun fries. The fries are very crispy, seasoned well and the burgers are 1/3 lb patties cooked heavenly.

call in ahead if you can cuz it can be a 15-20 minute wait. street parking ain't bad either. give it a whirl.

The best greasy burger in the LBC!!! I love this place...I mean, I really love this place.  It's a little hole in the wall dive but they have some really good burgers and sandwiches.  It's basically the side of some fools house with a window to order food.  There is some ghetto patio furniture set up outside.  I usually just get it to go and eat at home.  They also have a good selection for vegetarians as well.  I usually get the George Foreman II, which is basically a cheeseburger and I get it with grilled onions.  Delicious.  I also get the Michael Jordan, a cajun chicken sandwich with cheddar and pesto...also delicious.  And of course some cajun fries.   And if want to get really crazy...I get cheese fries.  I large is like 2.50 and is large enough to feed an army.  MVP's is the perfect greasy spoon burger joint.  I love it.  They close early, at 7 now, just a heads up...and they are closed on Sunday.  But if you feel like a really good burger, I would definitely recommend this place.

The food is fantastic and everything you would expect from a good burger joint.  They also have a very diverse family of sandwiches, especially when you have friends that are picky as hell (why do I surround myself with these people?).   There are two things I could live without: the veggie burger and the horrible, horrible parking.  The veggie burger has grilled onions, mushrooms, and plenty of thousand island sauce and it just made the burger all moist and sloppy.  The patty started to break down and crumble apart by the time I got home, making my veggie burger look like a vegetarian's vomit after an extremely fun night out. :)  The parking is fricking ridiculous because they have like 2 spots in front, and the restaurant is in a neighborhood of apartments...and you know how that goes. Also, it is CASH ONLY - so I was really ticked after I spent 15 minutes looking for parking!

Artery Clogging & heart stopping - Goodness Gracious - I love this place.  I dont even eat any meat - but they have some great options:

Pete Rose: Gardenburger patty , swiss, lettuce tomato and spouts... on a fluffy wheat bun. Under $5 !!!

Mean Joe Green (MY favorite): Avocado, cream cheese, walnuts, leafy lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, spouts and red onion on THICK CUT SQUAW BREAD.  (STILL UNDER $5)

DONT forget to: Get your HUGE order of fries smothered in cheddar - mm mmm mmmm!!  (Full Order - enough to accompany 5 people and their burgers - $2.75)

The meal deal with burger, fries, and a drink for $6.50 is awesome. When the meal is served, you might be able to make out the burger on top of the 30 pounds of french fries. I swear to God, it's like the fried a sack of potatoes just for you. No doubt abut the burgers, they are delicious.

When you go, parking on 4th street sucks, so you might need to find a spot on one of the side streets. Also, seating is kind of limited, so you might want to just get your food to go.

MVP wins my vote as best greasy burger in Long Beach. All of the burgers/sandwiches are named after sports heroes. My wife likes the George Foreman with avocado. I usually order the Pat O'Day melt. (Order it without the mayo, which they sometimes heap on too much.)

When MVPs calls themselves a patio... believe it. It's basically a window in someone's house that you walk up and order from. They have patio furniture set out under a tarp if you insist on eating there. Do yourself a favor and call ahead and take your order home.

That way, nobody will point and laugh as you lick the bag of fries clean. Seriously. A BAG OF FRIES. Get the seasoned ones and ask for them extra crispy and extra seasoned. (They tend to undercook the fries. Can you blame them -- it's a bag of fries, just in case you missed the capital letters above.)  Oh, and ask for a side of ranch, and then go home and try not to feel bad about how good fries taste with ranch.

Thank you for helping me find another little gem, Yelp!

Like a few other people here, I expected a sports bar. I found, upon circling the block twice looking for it, a hole in the wall shack with a tiny tiny kitchen and a few tables. So, quite literally, it's a grill and a patio. But OH MY GOD, good food. I got a half order of fries (which was HUGE! enough for two people at least, and I'm a big eater) and a sandwich I forget the name of but it had chicken, thousand island dressing, wheat bun, and lettuce. Fries were good, hot and thick and not greasy.  Wow. My mom got the bacon avocado cheese burger with cajun cheese (real cheese, not goopy nacho crap) fries and that was great too. She wanted a gyro but the guy at the register didn't appear to know what it was, and then asked the cook who said they didn't have those today.

I heard a lot of people order the Tiger Woods, so I think I'm going to try that next time.

The sheer number of people I saw come by and pick up food tells you this place is good. No frills, nothing special. but the food is great. There was a good mix of people too, women, men, children, teens, young adults, and elderly people--THAT tells you it's good food!

Prices are good, mine was about $7 and my mom's $10. We both took some fries home and I'm still absolutely stuffed after 3 hours.

I will be back, but I think I will order to go next time and enjoy my food at home with a cold beer.

Oh, and I know they accept debit cards now.

Mmmmm mmm turkey burger. I got the Tiger Woods and it was probably the best turkey burger I have ever had, juicy and flavorful with a nice cajunaise sauce. But I was sad. Why sad you ask? B/c I knew if that was so good that the reg. burgers must be amazing ( got the turk burger trying to be "healthy")! Dan O. and i got the half portion of fries along with it and I swear it could have fed 4 people. All seating is outoors so make sure you come here on a nice day or just call in a to go order. Can't wait to come back very soon and get the George Foreman 4 or Mean Joe Green.

There isnt a thing on this menu that i've tried that I havent enjoyed thoroughly. The menu is fantastic, the portions are heaping and the prices are great. The only reason mvps isnt getting a five star is because they drastically changed their hours. The micheal jordon, sammy sosa, and jean claude kelly are my favorites so far but im still working my way through them all. If you order fries be prepared to not finish them as even a half order is a mission impossible. The cashier is a super nice guy, but if your stopping by make sure you bring a jacket as there is only outdoor seating

A friend of mine has been raving about this place for upwards of 2 years. I finally checked it out one saturday afternoon this spring when the weather was so pleasant, the sun could put you to sleep in fifteen minutes.

It is all that he built it up to be in perfect simplicity: Huuuuge burgers. Huuuuuuge fries. Tasty and filling and dripping with ooey gooey beefy goodness.

I love MVP's...especially for dinner on a warm summer's eve...or any warm evening for that matter!  Sitting outdoors watching the 4th Street world go by with a GREAT burger and GREAT fries -- life is good!  At the top of my list are the avocado bacon cheeseburger and the veggie sandwich (aka "Mean Joe Green") with avocado, cream cheese, walnuts, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, sprouts, red onions.  Be warned, one order of fries will easily feed two hungry people and a large order is plenty for 3 or 4 "burger buckets".  Chili fries are great too!  This is one of those "only in Long Beach" experiences -- go check it out!

Every once in awhile you need a REALLY good burger, for that time go to MVP's.  It is a little expensive but worth it. The portions are huge (get the small cheese fries and you'll see what I mean), and the flavors are fantastic.  Plus all the burgers and sandwichs are named after sports stars (or their children...ie George Foreman- George Foreman # whatever).  When I feel that I need to get that much closer to a heart attack I go here.

our relationship has taken a horrible turn in the last few months. i love you, but i'm not in love with you any more. why did you go and change your hours? about a year ago you decided to stay open later (9pm i believe) and our relationship flourished. now you pull this. closing at 5 nowadays has caused my never dying affection to stray. yeah, i've been seeing other burger joints on the side of late. believe me, i wanted us to work out but you made choices. those choices drove a stake between you and i. i'll miss your cajun fries. i'll miss your Pete Rose veggie-burger. i'll miss your mr. pibb. but will you miss me? probably not. so this is goodbye....or at least until i run into you out drinking with those skanky friends i warned you about (that's not just a coldsore). we'll have a torrid one night of passion to help us remember.....scratch that......you don't do nights anymore. we've grown apart.

probably one of my favorites in lb. i like the jean claude killy - chicken breast, avo, sprouts, tomato on squaw. we always share a half order of cajun fries between 2-3 people. it's pretty big.

they've started to change their hours with the seasons, so you best be calling and checking before you walk/drive/bike over.

if you are lucky, your favorite sandwich will be the daily special....then you'll get the sandwich, fries, and drink for super cheap.

Not many places I review get a 5-star, but this is one of them. Fantastic grub. Great cross-section of food here from salads to gyros to Big Ass Burgers. My favorite is the Big George, but it should be noted that they have all five George Foreman's on the menu. I just think it is cool that he named all his kids "George Foreman" also. That takes big George Foreman balls. If you are feeling fruity, the Greg Louganis is not bad. So I have heard.

We finally tried this place out a few months ago when we decided try something completely new to us. First, we couldn't find the place as we expected that it would be some semi flashy sports bar - hey with a name like MVP's what were we supposed to think? We finally found it and realized it was some little tucked away hole in the wall place.  I had read plenty of good reviews, and by the looks of the place, I figured it MUST be good. When you don't worry too much about your digs, but you have a big following, you probably have your priorities right.

Unlike people I see driving around in their Escalades with fat rims, picking up their load from the laundromat - priorities are NOT in order. That's another story.

So I ordered the Mary Lou Retton - it was great because I used to love her as a kid - memories of my sister and I moving furniture in my living room so that we could do cartwheels during our make believe floor routines. Those were the days.

It was a fantastic sandwich - made to order, good bread, great deli meats, some Ortega chilis. Really, REALLY good. I want to go back to try their burgers and some of the other sandwiches.  I think the fact that it is a small, no frills place keeps the prices down.  Definitely good eats!

I have been eating at MVP's for well over 10 years. I have actually been with them since the original owners opened it. They have the best cajun fries that can literally feed three if you get a full order. I also love the Pete Rose, a garden burger on a whole wheat bun. They also have a yummy sandwich on squaw bread with avocado, cream cheese and walnuts that is my favorite sandwich, next to a grilled cheese. Enjoy !!

Best burger in Long Beach. The fries unfortunatley suck which is a shame because you really want them to be good. The cajun seasoning on the fries was good but lacked depth. The thing that really killed the fries was that they were just too soggy. This place deserves a five based on the burger alone but the fries will drop it down to a 4.

I stopped by last night to what appeared to be a small burger shack in front of someones house. And it was.

MVP's was surprisingly good considering it's a tiny burger shack on a somewhat residential street.

I had my reservations about this place only because I tend to discriminate against shady looking burger joints -- however, this place was clean and the owner was extremely welcoming and nice.

The menu features everything from signature burgers (named after MVPs in sports), salads, sandwiches, garden burgers  and specialty fries.

I kept it simple and ordered a cheese burger and Cajun fries.
The burger was damn good and HUGE! It was the perfect burger topped off with sweet grill onions.

The fries were alright...I would have preferred crispy fries, but what are you going to do.

Overall, not a bad spot if you are in search of a burger place that is not Tommy's or *gasp* McDonalds!

One of my favorite burger places in LB...discovered this place 10 years ago.  The meat for the burgers is fresh & the sandwiches are delectable as well.  If you like your fries big (like me), then you are in for a treat; don't forget to ask for Cajun seasonings!
Definitely a grab and go sort of place; the outdoor patio (the only place to dine) doesn't offer much ambiance.

A delicacy as far a grease pits are concerned! Seriously, their hamburgers are the best! They use high quality ingredients, and you can taste it! I also highly recommend the cajun cheese fries with a side of ranch dressing. Their ranch dressing is also the best!

You can sit and eat there if you want, but there's not much of an ambiance. There is plenty of seating, but it's more of a grab and go kind of place.

I will admit that the sporty names for all the combos and sandwiches are a bit annoying. It sort of makes me think of athletes foot and jock itch right before I eat. Really, who wants to think of a sweaty locker room when they're eating? But, I will brave it all for one of MVP's delicious burgers.

P.S. Stop blocking my driveway to pick up your food really quick. The 20 of you that do that everyday "really quick" take up a lot of my time! It's rude to block people's driveways and I'm going to start kicking cars!

I'm ashamed that I have lived in Long Beach for 10 years and not eaten here. We finally made our way over the other night when I was too tired to make dinner. Friendly service, great selection of burgers and sammies, great prices. We had the "pat day melt" w/ bacon (like a patty melt on grilled sourdough), the pastrami burger and a full order of cajun fries. Didn't need the full order of fries. A half would have been plenty. Food tasted good- burgers were juicy, and the fries were crisp and well seasoned. We got a ton of food for $13. I have to admit it made me very sleepy, though. I passed out on the couch about a half hour after we ate. I will definitely come back when I'm craving a burger and fries and don't want to drive to in-n-out.

I can smell this place from my apartment.  Unfortunately that does not take away from it's deliciousness!  A full order of Cajun Cheese Fries (aka, enough to feed a cajun cheese fry eating army) for under 2 bucks!  Excellent burgers, excellent sandwiches, lame sports themed names, a few patio tables, makes for a difficult thing to say no to.
Come fill up your gut with the best gut bomb food in Long Beach.  You won't be disappointed!

Even though I've said Broadway is my favorite street in Long Beach, 4th Street is a close second. Like Monica C, I've passed by this place many times and finally gave it a try.

They have about 15 different burgers, about 10 salads, and about 20 different sandwiches. Everything is named after a different athlete. So much to choose from, where to start? I was tempted by the Nadia Comeneci salad, but ended up going with the Michael Jordan sandwich, which had cajun chicken breast, mint pesto, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, and red onion on grilled sourdough. It was very good! I especially liked the pesto. I also got a half order of cajun seasoned fries; I'm not sure what the complaints were by other people about the fries, because these were nice and hot and not too greasy, in my opinion. Not to mention that the serving of fries was huge, even though it was just a half order. The Tiger Woods burger was a popular choice by the other people waiting in line, and there was also a daily combo special.

This is a really simple food stand, just set up in front of a house on 4th St. Like the others have mentioned, there are a few tables set up outside under a tarp if you want to eat there. My family used to go on a lot of road trips, and I like the roadside food stand feel that this gives off. Much like La Taqueria down the street, there were quite a few people waiting in line here. You can call in your order ahead of time if you're in a hurry; otherwise there is a short wait due to its popularity in the local neighborhood.

This is a local business I'm happy to support. Quirky little places like this are what make Long Beach a great place to live. Next time I look forward to trying one of their burgers.

This place serves up some mean burgers and sandwiches. From veggie burgers to george foreman V's (a couple pounds 'o' beef) MVPs can satisfy just about any pallet. The fries are a bit on the over-seasoned side, but im sure this can be resolved with a simple request. So far, Sammy Sosa has proven to deliver a mighty fine grilled chicken sandwich, and oh yeah, its a greaser!

Phone order alert! When this place is jamming, which it often is, you may find yourself waiting 20 min +. This can be torturous.

Bike ride visits highly recommended.

this place kicks some lazy long beach afternoon ass! the fries are crispy moist goodness and one order is large enough to share. their variety of sandwiches is impressive and vast enough to satisfy an array of dietary preferences. seating is limited but possible and this being long beach, parking is possible unless you insist on being right in front. who are you?
