Sometimes not having plans is the best plan of all...
On our last visit to the Napa Valley before we realized it it was almost 4 and we still hadn't had lunch. Rather than grabbing a quick bite, we decided that an early dinner was in order. A quick call to Mustards Grill rewarded us with a reservation.
Fate certainly smiled on us that day since our dinner was most enjoyable.
Even though our dinner spanned shifts, the servers were attentive and knowledgeable about the menu.
For entrees, three out of the four of us ordered the daily specials - two Truckstop Deluxes and one seafood Tostada. The remaining member of our party ordered one of the regular menu items. We added goat cheese polenta just because it sounded really good. Every item was a success.
Desserts were a bit of a disappointment - two bread puddings and one berry sundae. Although they were good, they weren't spectacular. However our disappointment could well be the choices made since the lemon-lime tart looked nothing less than amazing. We'll have to come back to find out if it looks as good as it tastes.
Mustards Grill is well worth actually planning for.
I stopped here for dinner after spending some time touring the wine vineyards of Napa.
This place really surprised me. I wasn't expecting much going in, but a hot meal and cold drink. I ended up having one of the best meals I can remember.
I sat at the bar. The service here was great and very friendly. The bartender had actually grown up in Napa. They had Sportcenter on a large flat-screen in back of me. There was a wide variety of wine, but I elected to remain sober through-out my meal.
I ordered the current special which was coq au vin with an appetizer of grilled quail in a sweet & sour sauce.
The quail was excellent. It was very tender and flavorful.
The coq au vin was in a class by itself. It came with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. It consisted of 2 pieces of chicken. One was grilled the other I believe was roasted. The meat practically fell off the bone it was heavenly.
They have a bunch of slogans for this place like "SORRY WE'RE DELICIOUS" and "WAY TOO MANY WINES". All of them are true. This place is a great place to unwind after a great afternoon of sun and wine.
The prices were a little high, but the food deserved the higher price.
+ Great food
+ Great and friendly service
After all these years of driving past Mustard's Grill, I finally made a reservation for lunch on our way to a nice day of wine tasting. There are so many fine dining options in Yountville and St. Helena, it's really hard to try them all! I knew my mom and aunt just wanted a light lunch, but I just HAD to try Mustard's Grill. Especially after seeing Cindy Pawlcyn on Top Chef Masters, I wasn't going to wait any longer!
We went on a Friday for lunch and the place was jammed packed! Service was a little slow at first - took some time to get our orders placed, but the staff was super nice. I had to get the Mongolian Pork Chop, my mom got the Niman Ranch Burger, and my aunt got the Soft Shell Crab Tostada special.
Mongolian Pork Chop - Best pork chop i've ever had! Nice big pork chop, super moist, and great flavor. The accompanying cabbage and mashed potatoes were really good too!
Niman Ranch Hamburger - The meat was cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. Pretty good deal for a really quality burger at $12.
Soft Shell Crab Tostada - I only had a small bite of this, but it was very tasty. I wasn't too keen on having a pool of beans at the bottom of the salad... but I guess that's what tostadas are about huh?
And of course, don't forget dessert! I got their famous lemon-lime tart topped with a ridiculous amount of meringue! The meringue was a little much, but the tart was super delish. And the candied lemon peels were yummy too. A nice way to finish the meal.
Personally I liked Mustard's Grill better than Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen. Both are casual dining, and really focus on making excellent American style dishes. Generous portions and really tasty food. I'll definitely have to come back and try the other stuff!
The bf had been here multiple times but I haven't tried it till recently.
We finally went for lunch with a reservation and it was crowded, and there was a line.
We got seated immediately, but service after that was poor. Waitress wasn't friendly, and water/ iced tea didn't get refilled as often or quickly as we liked. Our food looked nice but were just OK tasting, not great.
Price tab for lunch for two with no alcohol was almost $100. For that, I'm dropping 1 extra star.
What's the point of reservations if you still have to wait like 20 minutes?
That was my biggest complaint about the place. My gf and I arrived about 5 mintues before our reservations and we had to wait about 20 minutes pass our reservation time to be seated.
Once seated we were given the awesome wine menu called, "Way too many wines" They have a selection of $26 bottles of wines too for the more budget concsious eater which is a great deal.
My gf and I ordered the Famous Mongolian Pork Chops and the BBQ Ribs. THe pork chops did not dissappoint and was very tasty. The ribs were a bit tough and did not fall off the bones like the way I like them. So A+ for pork chap and only a C for the ribs.
Service was good but the ambience was quite noisy. I would only go again and get the pork chop and $26 bottle of wine.
Dear Cindy Pawlcyn, please hire more personnel for MG. Please don't make me wait 45 mins at 5pm for a table when 20 mins was the estimated wait time. Don't follow this up by telling me it will be another 15 mins or so and then looking at me like I have two heads while I say "Take me off the list". I realize the kitchen fire may have diminished the staff but, come on......Better luck next time. Maybe I'll try Cindy's then.....
September 12, 2009, Napa Valley Date Weekend with Boyfriend
Dear Mustards Grill,
I love that you are so conveniently located on Highway 29 on my way to the wineries or when I need to sober up from all those wine tastings.
I love how you have always provided me with delicious ORGANIC MEALS lovingly tended from your LITTLE FARM NEXT DOOR. http://static3.px.yelp... http://www.yelp.com/bi...
I love your warm, bright and cheerful place with the view of the vineyards. Your staff are always very friendly and knowledgeable.
And you have made another fan this weekend--my BF who drove by you a hundred times before but never made a stop. Oh, how he missed out! My BF has repented after having a taste of your California inspired cuisine for the first time and is now a true believer!
I just love you. Now my BF loves you, too.
Always, Leah
OUR LUNCH AT MUSTARDS GRILL @ 2pm:
Drinks: Cold refreshing glass of Brut ($11) from the bar for me and Diet Coke for BF while waiting for our table (less than 30 min wait).
Apps: ROASTED WHOLE GARLIC WITH SUNDRIED TOMATOES AND GOAT CHEESE SERVED WITH CROSTINI: A marriage of flavors, each complimenting while not overpowering each other. The garlic was perfectly roasted and the bread just rightly toasted without being too crunchy. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Me: QUAIL WITH FIGS IN BALSAMIC SAUCE: Wowee!!! I'm not an exotic bird fan and will refuse to eat quail if cooked by an unknown person. This quail was not gamey but the flavors of the poultry was magnified 10x!!! Delicious!! http://www.yelp.com/bi...
BF: HAMBURGER W/ BLEU CHEESE AND AVOCADO: He had another dish in mind but blurted out hamburger when our server took our order. He loved his big, juicy $16 burger with fries and thought it was worth it. (I have to take him back to experience the organic creative gourmet that Mustards is really known for.)
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Dessert: PEANUT BUTTER PIE. Love peanut butter and love anything sweet. What else is there to say?!!! I forgot that it was so smooth and loaded with pecan pralines! Delicious!!! http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Tab: $15 bar bill + $64.65 (with tax not including tip) = $79.65
Mustards Grill is your place for casual dining in the Napa Valley. It is not the French Laundry or even close but a delicious and satisfying meal is guaranteed everytime!
I am loyal to this place and for that it gets 5 STARS: great service, organic food that they grow in their own backyard, innovative, yummy and comforting meal and warm atmosphere. What more can one ask for?
My first visit was in July and I was so impressed that I took my wife and daughter again this past weekend.
In both visits, everything was cooked perfectly. The onion ring ( not the usual greasy battered type ) with their home made ketchup sauce was excellent. Hanger steak has terrific smokey flavor and cooked perfectly. My brother-in-law had the best calf liver during our first visit. This place is a bit cheaper than the typical French restaurant but the cooking is excellent.
Make sure that you try the rabbit and pork chop.
You should call for reservation or arrive when they just open.
A perfect stop for lunch when you are wine tasting. We actually had our "lunch" at 3pm, so luckily the restaurant was not very crowded and we got seated right away.
We wanted to eat "light" even though it didn't actually end up that way--everything on the menu looked delicious. My mom and I split 2 appetizers and 2 side dishes. We had the crab cakes and the corn tamales, and for the sides we got potato chips and polenta. Everything was SO good. Then we were going to go but we couldn't resist dessert, so we also had vanilla ice cream with blueberries and cake. Yum yum yum.
I thought it was a little bit overpriced for the portions we got, but hey, we were in Napa and my mom was buzzed enough that she didn't care. Everybody was happy.
I've been a fan of Mustard's for at least 15 years. Their meals have been consistently good, and generally, service has been good. I LOVE the hangar steak, salads and Calamari salad. The Calamari salad can easily double as as an entre. Ambiance is noisy, seating crowded when busy, but it's the consistency of the food that keeps me coming back.
I am very disappointed in their bar however. I recently paid $27.50 for two grey goose bloody mary's for my wife and I. $27.50?? WTF? I'm wine tasting beforehand from now on!!
For my 100th review, nothing would be more perfect than recounting a 5-star experience at Mustards Grill.
My boyfriend and I spent Labor Day driving up through Napa county and hiking 10 miles at Robert Lewis Stevenson Park, just past Calistoga. What a beautiful day-- warm, sunny, and absolutely gorgeous scenery! Absolutely perfect.
When we were through hiking we were parched, and he was hankering for some good homestyle-cooked red meat. Of course, what better way to fix sun-dehydration than wine? And what better way to end a hike than with fresh corn tamales, seared ahi tuna "chips", Truckhouse stop (21-oz ribeye steak, Yukon gold potatoes, onions and bell peppers), and fresh garden string beans?
Tamales (2): reliably good, sweet, with a few corn kernels. Topped with avocado, roasted pumpkin seeds, and mushrooms, it was the perfect balance of sweet, not-too-mushy, and fall-inspired.
Ahi tuna served on top of sesame "chips" with wasabi-horseradish sauce: fresh tuna, sizable portions, standard issue.
Ribeye: perfectly cooked! Tender, juicy, and surprisingly not as fatty as expected (this is a good thing). Complemented well with buttery roasted potatoes, cheese-steak-style peppers and onions (also well seasoned) and topped with a rich blue-cheese butter. Definitely a highlight!
Seasonal vegetables: fresh, buttery, salty, and peppery string beans. Not a huge portion, but good enough.
The complementary bread (though not served in a plate, but directly on the table?!) was fantastic as well.
Wine: We split a half-bottle of Stonybrook red Zin. Huge bursts of flavors that complemented the flavorful food quite well. Served in a decanter, so the extra "airing out" definitely helped the wine breathe a bit!
Dessert: their "famous" brown sugar merengue on a lemon-lime tart. Impressively sized, perfectly sour, with a rich 4" merengue topping. Thick, buttery crust and 2 candied lemon rinds.. this was definitely a refreshing end to our meal and perfect to be shared!
Service: down to earth, chatty, and casual. Our server was extremely friendly. Water refills, bread refills, and food service was prompt and well-paced. We were also seated within 10 minutes of our reservation (5pm on Labor day Monday).
Atmosphere: Feels almost like a corner cafe or diner, but more expensive and better food. Really comfortable but overly cozy. Certainly not pretentious!
All in all: 5 stars. Well done, Cindy :) When we watched you on Top Chef we entered with high expectations, and they were all well-met!
I thought the wait was going to be ridiculous, but it took less than a few minutes when we stopped by for lunch after visiting some wineries.
The food was delicious but didn't necessarily blow me away as expected. We got the fried calamari with curried slaw and some chilies. The curry was too overwhelming for me, and it felt a little strange going down. The calamari pieces were fried to perfection though.
I got the ahi tuna sandwich that had a basil aioli and some slivers of pickled ginger. It was pretty tasty, but didn't wow me so much. A little too much ginger for my taste. The sandwich came with fries as well. The best dish though was my dad's. He got the grilled halibut with corn, chanterelle and lobster mushrooms. It was insanely good. Halibut was moist, corn was so fresh (never a can in sight I bet), mushrooms were great.
After our meal, we wandered over to their garden. I saw their corn stalks (a-ha!), rows of different herbs, vegetables and beautiful sunflowers. It was a nice day to be in Napa.
Oh, how I want to retire in Napa Valley!
My boyfriend and I went to Napa for a long weekend, my first time! Friday we really got at it on the wine tasting and went to 6 vineyards - a little aggressive - and completely forgot to eat breakfast or lunch. That made our day a little shorter than we would have liked because we were so tired!
Since I was now a one-day expert on how to wine taste "professionally", we went to Domaine Chandon in the morning, and sat outside enjoying the gardens and champagne. Our next stop was Miner Family Vineyards (definitely a great spot as well!) where we tried an ounce and a half of 6 wines. Before we went in for the tasting, we made reservations at Mustards Grill which was just a hop, skip and a jump down the road.
First of all, I am a sucker for handwriting. I know that sounds bizarre, but I love their logo! It looks just like someone hand-wrote it. Oh, and my favorite color is yellow... so between the logo, decor, and view... I was very happy! At this time it was about 1:30, and the place was packed! We thought we would have quite a wait, but to our surprise this restaurant really knows how to turn tables! We were seated within ten minutes, and by the window overlooking millions of sunflowers... it was beautiful!
We started with the Onion Rings served with tomato-apple ketchup. YUM! If they sold this in bottles and I could, I would ship a batch or ten home. It turned average fried onion rings to a really fun and interesting appetizer. (I'm thinking this could make my pretty awful attempt at mastering culinary skills way better!) My boyfriend got the burger with mushrooms, avocado, and blue cheese. The bun was perfectly toasted golden brown, covered with perfectly fried miniature onion rings. He savored every bite. I got the grilled chicken Spanish style and it was excellent!
The meal was great for before and after wine tasting. The meals filled us up and gave us a coated stomach to taste more delicious wine. We didn't have wine with lunch, although many people did. This is a great ambiance, great food, and perfect for lunch stop during a day of wine tasting!
Cuisine:
Upscale comfort food.
Attire:
Anything from flip-flops with cargo shorts to satin cocktail dresses with stilettos.
Highlights:
Best hanger steak I have EVER had (grilled, with caramelized cipollini onions - served with watercress sauce, french fries) in my life.
Delicious blueberry-nectarine cobbler.
Beautiful vegetable garden on site.
Lowlight:
Salad accompanying the crab cake appetizer was so over-salted that neither of us could manage it. Inedible.
Mid-Light:
Three greens (sweet endive, arugula, butter lettuce) with Maytag blue cheese dressing and spiced pistachios was delicious, but B felt it was verging on overdressed.
Overall: Fabulous.
Been wanting to go here for awhile and finally just stopped in without a reservation. Only 45 minutes wait for a group of 4. Fantastic ribs. Not fall off the bone ribs, you had to gnaw the meat from the bone. Very tasty. Nice and crispy on the ends. I also had the chicken tortilla soup which was good, not great. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich which had big pieces of pulled pork in it. We split a side of polenta which was very flavorful.
We also enjoyed a walk through their garden while we waited. All around great experience
I love Mustards! I've come here many many times over the past 15 years (!?) and make it a point to stop here for food with each visit to the Napa Valley.
The service and ambience and selection is always great-- this still applies and remains consistent even though my eating habits haven't. I asked for a vegan meal- "No problem!" and DEE-licious ristotto with mushrooms and heirloom tomatoes was my dish.
Our server was a witty chick who was on a double shift (not by choice) who had a very dry sense of humor that suited our table very well. She was great.
Definitely make Mustards Grill a destination place!
After an afternoon of drinking wine and sipping on Champagne we were ready for a nice lunch. Right off of Highway 29 we just had to stop at the famous Mustards Grill. When we pulled up it wasn't as impressive as I thought it would be but nonetheless it was packed. The line was out the door and we were told that the wait would be at least 30 minutes. Not bad considering the popularity of this place, location and the lack of a reservation. The weather was perfect so we decided to wait outside. As we drooled over the menu the hostess called my name (15 minutes later) so it wasn't as bad as we thought.
Once inside the ambience was hectic. There was so much going on it kind of reminded me of a scene out of Chopped. Ok not that crazy but fast paced. Luckily we sat in a not so loud area. Interesting people watching here as we noticed a lot of plastic. LA in Napa Valley? Water and bread came out quick. Service was top notch with the waiters quickly replenishing drinks (w/o asking) and brushing any crumbs off the table. With an impressive list of choices on their lunch menu we knew we were in the mood for a good burger.
1/2 pound Niman Ranch Cheeseburger + avocado+bacon: Wow...this was easily the best burger I've EVER had. I ordered mine medium and it was thick, plump, juicy and cooked to perfection. It was perfection from start to finish. The hass avocado was like butter and the thick bacon was as good as it gets. It included steak fries, all the typical fixings and a sweet relish that we didn't care for. The side of ranch was excellent. Geeeeez...I wish I was eating one this moment.....droooooool. You know those burgers you see on TV that look so perfect but they are fake...well here it's the real deal. The entire time wifey and I were like "ooohh and aaah" and we just smiled at each other the entire time. It was like that feeling you get right after you've just finished having sex. Ahhhhhhhh. $16
I don't just hand out 5 stars but this place easily deserves it. The food here looks like something straight out of the Food Network. I know that even Linda "Burger obsessed culinarian" L would be drooling over this burger. Do yourself a favor and stop for a burger...you will thank me later. The burger was so freakin' huge we had no room for dessert. We saw some pass by and boy did they look good. But who cares we were completely satisfied with our lunch. We will see you soon Mustards....for your juicy burger NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM.
* Save time and call in for reservations
We came here on our last trip Monday trip to Napa. I called in the morning to make a reservation while we were driving up since Opentable didn't have any tables showing.
We make it to Mustards to see a bunch of people outside waiting and inside is definitely crowded. Even with our reservation we waited 15 min to be seated which is better than the 45 min I heard the hostess tell several walk ins.
We are finally seated and we start off with the Bloody Marys (with a side shot of beer). Delicious. From there we order:
-Soup of the day (forgot what it is doh!)
-Sweet corn tamales
-Quail legs cooked Asian style
-Niman Ranch hamburger X 3
All of the food was delicious! Every plate was licked clean and the service was very attentive. Definitely worth a trip back! Looking forward to try out the Cindy's other restaurants - Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen and Go Fish!
Ok, I would give you a 4. But my husband makes this adorable pouty face everytime I threaten to try something new instead of coming to you... so for him, I'm upping it to a 5, because, really, you're a cornerstone of our marriage. Ha.
1. Veg options: never boring! always flavorful!
2. Appetizers: delicious!!! I think I've had every veg one they've ever offered...
3. Making my meat-loving husband happy: amazing. I say Mustards and he wants to repeat our vows.
4. Wine list: it's the never ending story... and the servers have always recommended incredible wines and have also arranged for us to have a private wine tasting once! You can't beat that!
5. Desserts: mmmmmm!
6. Dependability: we go here at least 2-3 times a year... and it always makes everyone happy. Me, the husband, our parents, siblings... friends...
We're going back in 2 weeks, just remember to make reservations!
I've had dinner at this restaurant once with my family. The food was pretty good, but the restaurant isn't that big--at least the area where we sat. Make sure you make reservations because it does get crowded.
We showed up at 7 o'clock on a Friday without a reservation, but they ended up seating us about 30 minutes later.
We ordered heirloom tomato salad, which was excellent. We're both vegetarians and in addition to the menu items they offered a vegetarian risotto with chanterelle mushrooms, wax beans and heirloom cherry tomatoes. Absolutely delicious. I ordered a spinach portobello burger which was quite tasty.
Service was good, at one point the waitress dropped a plate which shattered all around us. They were very apologetic, the manager came over to make sure everyone was okay (we were.)
All in all, highly recommended.
I found Mustard's Grill after doing my usual pre-trip searches for places to dine. Little did I know that it's directly next door to Brix, which I'm also a big fan of.
My experience at Mustard's couldn't have been better! I didn't make reservations for our 2nd day in the Napa Valley and decided to stop by on a whim for a seat at the bar. 10 min wait if that, worked out well!
Our server was also our bartender, who was very sweet and checked on us often. We started with Warm Cabecou Goat Cheese, sundried tomato relish, grilled bread- which was a delicate and light appetizer. The bf had a 1/2 pound Niman Ranch Cheeseburger (moist and flavorful) and I had the Grilled Chicken "Spanish Style," roasted garden peppers and onions, manchego cheese- This was perfect, spicy and creamy with all of the peppers and cheese.
I have to mention that I was pleasantly surprised to find that they served my all-time favorite ginger beer called Cock & Bull- which is rare to find at a restaurant. I normally use this to make a Dark and Stormy, but even served without the rum, it's delicious on it's own. Spicy and sweet, full of ginger flavor. This was really the ideal drink after a nice sparkling wine buzz at Chandon. Highly recommended.
We finished off our lunch with Mustard's famous Lemon-Lime Tart (& "ridiculously tall" brown sugar meringue). Not overly sweet and perfect to share. After all this, we weren't overly stuffed and the bill was completely reasonable. Great lunch.
Overall I had a really nice experience! I'm looking forward to going back to have dinner here and try something a little more complex with a great glass of wine. That'll likely be the 5th star I'll add to my review. With a James Beard medal on the wall, I'm sure I won't be let down!
Be sure to take a look at their private garden if you have a moment- very cute and a true testament to the freshness of your meal!
New american cuisine with semi tasty food.
What seemed like a far cry from a the lap of luxury we were already accustomed to eating this restaurant sort of let me down. No problem making reservations for 8:30pm on a weekend. Walked right in and the restaurant was about half full. We were seated in the corner and the menus arrived. I kept hoping that something would catch my eye. Something would scream luxury or tasty food. Instead I found food that I could get at a Ruby Tuesday.
I ordered the Crab Cakes (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) which arrived on separate plates to be shared with my GF. The crab cakes were very moist and had a nice battered coating.
I also ordered the Ceasar Salad (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) which seemed more like a head of lettuce just pulled apart and put on my plate and sprinkled with cheese and a few croutons. I was disappointed. Very little dressing if there was any at all.
My GF ordered the Rabit Meat Ravioli (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) which was promised to be in a tomato sauce. It wasn't in a tomato sauce and I sent it back immediately. She was eyeing my food at this point. I tossed her a bone.
I ordered the Baby Back Ribs (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) which came with sweet baked beans. The ribs were delicious! I loved them. The dry rub and bbq sauce were perfectly balanced. I cut them into pieces and savored every rib. I kept having to offer my GF food since hers was a total let down. I didn't want to do this. My ribs were tasty.
Again, my food was just ok overall. No real ambiance that I could detect. This could have been the special at any grill in any small town.
Don't think I will go back, well maybe for a half slab of those ribs to go!
We decided to leave our options open for lunch one Saturday on a Napa trip (that's code for "forgot to make a reservation"). Cindy Pawlcyn had just been on Top Chef Masters and we wanted to adopt her as an aunt or something, so we stopped into Mustards. We expected a crazy wait, but ended up eating at the bar pretty quickly after we arrived.
My favorite part of the meal was the little tiny grilled quail. They were what chicken wings dream of being. Tuna sandwich was okay (I actually like the one at Taylor's better). Barbeque pork sandwich was also only okay, the pork wasn't very tender. The apple/tomato ketchup they serve with the fries is pretty ridiculous though.
Some good and a little meh. After a morning of tastings, we stopped at Mustards Grill for lunch. It started really well. The crab cakes were delicious. The dish came with a small side salad which was ridiculously salty. But when taken with a little bit of crab cake it actually made the whole thing even better. Highly recommended.
Not realizing that we'd be getting some greens with our crab cake, I also ordered a caesar salad. Really wish I hadn't ordered it. Not that it was bad, mind you. It wasn't particularly remarkable nor memorable.
For the entree, ordered the lamb. The lamb dish changes pretty regularly so your particular mileage will vary. The lamb was a big chop with most of the meat already taken off the bone. It came as three pieces. The little piece that was still on the bone was DELICIOUS. It was well seasoned and very tender -- you'd expect that when the meat is on the bone. The other two pieces were well seasoned but I thought they were a little over cooked.
I realize we were in Napa, but after an entire morning of wine tasting I thought I'd break it up by ordering beer with our lunch. Ordered Cica's Red Frog Ale which comes in a 750ml bottle. It was perfect for lunch and a tad more than 2 pints of beer. It tastes hoppy but smells of malts. Odd that, but a beer I'd definitely try again.
Service was really good. We asked to split everything (appetizers, salad, and entree). They brought everything out in its own plate. There was surprisingly no extra charge for split plates.
I love this restaurant! The food was yummy and the service was great.
So after a long day of wine tasting, we decided to try this restaurant. It was high on my list; since I've heard so many great things about it.
We went there without reservations for a late lunch. So, we waited about 20 mins. or so. During that time, we walked around their small organic garden. This restaurant uses all their greens from the garden. It was actually nice to know that you're eating something organically grown.
We ordered a mixed green salad with candied walnuts and herbs. Then, my friend ordered a roasted half chicken dish. I ordered the roasted rabbit dish. The roasted chicken was yummy. It was served with french baby carrots and roasted herbed potatoes. The rabbit dish was served with a sweet potato polenta. It was delicious. We finished every nook and cranny.
The waiter even suggested a chardonnay to go with it, so we ordered 2 glasses. It definitely complimented our meals. The restaurant's decor is very serene. It was very peaceful knowing you're in the heart of Napa Valley surrounded by beautiful vineyards around you.
I love this restaurant and our lunch wasn't heavy at all. It was very healthy and there were a lot of vegetarian dishes on the menu.
I would definitely recommend this place. It's a bit on the pricey side but worth the trip if you're in Napa Valley.
I guess it was an honest 4 stars.... not quite 5.
We were here for a late breakfast (but not brunch as they don't serve that) so really just there for lunch.
We had quite a variety of different things as there were 5 of us. I think we had 3 appetizers.
Overall the food was all very good.. I don't remember all the names of all the different dishes... but they were all good... from appetizer to dessert.
The service was ok.... not great...... in line with 4 stars.
It was kinda funny... because I had wanted to stop by here for the past, probably 12 years.... maybe not worth the 1:30 drive that we took to get up there, but it was a special occasion.
Definitely make a reservation on opentable or you'll be waiting forever. We ended up being 20 minutes late due to traffic in napa, and at first I was mad because our hostess gave up our table, but when we called to say we were late, we must have arrived 2 minutes later and she felt bad. So as soon as a couple tables cleared up, she was able to squeeze us in. Whew.
I already looked at the menu in advance and knew I wanted to get the rabbit. I'd never eaten it, and I love new american cuisine so was excited. We ordered calamari salad for the table which was delicious. As our main courses came out, my mouth was watering. The ribs were gigantor and full of sauce, while my rabbit.... looked like a deformed chicken but still looked wonderful! Proceeded to eat bite by bite and was amazed at the quality and presentation of the food, given my high NYC standards.
Dinner went very well with a bottle of vino - though I had boozed myself to death all day visiting wineries that I barely had a glass at dinner. Nice way to end my perfect Napa day.
I don't think I've ever had a bad meal in Napa and Mustards is no exception. I had some ribs that were smoked and basted and they were fall off the bone tender.
One of the great things is that you can be in shorts and flip flops or a suit, the whole crowd had any type of clothing and it was all ok.
When I was here it was 4th of July and we made reservations that just happened to let us see the fireworks while driving back to the hotel, perfect way to end an evening!
We decided to arrive at Mustards a little earlier than our reservation and enjoy a cocktail at the bar. The bartender was quite witty and after bantering back and forth for a few minutes, he recommended his specialty drink for the evening which was a blackberry margarita. So even though I am not a fan of fruity drinks, I decided to try it. It was just okay for me, nothing that rocked my socks and when I closed out the tab to find out it was $13 for an 8 oz drink - ouch!
At the time of our reservation, the hostess approached us notifying us that our table was ready, but if we preferred to sit in the front of the house it would be just a few more minutes. The choice was ours. We decided to wait as the front of the house offered more ambiance in my opinion. Once seated, our server promptly greeted us, told us about the menu, etc. She also brought a small loaf of bread and placed it directly on the tablecloth - no cutting board or basket. I have never been served bread that way and felt bad about all of the crumbs I was littering on the table when taking a slice of the bread. For my entree, I ordered their signature entree, the Mongolian pork chop. It was heavenly. I dare say this chop was the best I've had - flavorful and tender and the housemade mustard was the perfect condiment to enhance the already scrumptious flavor. I also enjoyed my sides of sweet and sour red cabbage - nice complement to the chop and the garlic mashed potatoes - thick, rich and creamy.
The service was stellar. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu, was there when needed and was in no rush to turn the table even though it was prime dining time on a Friday night.
Great dining experience!
This place is kind of far from anything else. I went out to this place with a few friends after a yelp elite event.
There is a decent amount of parking around the building itself. The inside doesn't seem too big but isn't that small.
Cece c actually made reservations however we weren't on the list. Luckily they fit us in. It was really busy when we came.
There have daily specials. I had the trucker daily special which was a steak in coco BBQ sauce. The steak was really good and was worth the $38 that they charged me. However the long beans that was provided with the steak didn't match the taste nor did it complimented the steak.
Overall a pretty good meal.
After the YEE last week, Brandon A., Jimmy H. and I came here for dinner.
A few things went wrong at Mustards...
- They lost our reservation (Luckily we came 30 mins earlier. Next time I'm booking thru opentable. I don't trust the person on the other line.)
- Hanger steak was quite rare, really chewy, and extremely difficult to cut. It was suppose to be MR. =\ I should've gotten the Truckstop like the other boys. =\
I saw them on Check Please so I was expecting better. They were indeed packed and crazy busy that night! I avoided the Pork Chop because in previous reviews it sounded that people didn't like them. I also ordered a side dish of sweet potatoes and yams ($8). I wasn't too crazy about this dish because it looked a bit small, but the green sauce/salsa on top was quite an interesting combo. For dessert I got my fig sorbet with candied pecans, balsamic reduction, and a lemon cookie!!! YUM! I think I could've just had that for dinner and been happy! I got an overpriced and super sweet root beer here. =\ But I tried my friend's drink... Mo Spa Treatment? I forget, but it had grapefruit juice and other stuff! It was good!
Next time I'm here, I'll stick with what's on the blackboard. You can't go wrong.
We came to Mustards Grill after the YEE @ Maisonry. It's set on its own lot so it's quite easy to find right off the road. However, I must say that the parking spaces are narrow. Fortunately, I wasn't driving so it wasn't something I had to worry about. In fact, Jimmy H's truck took up two spaces haha.
Anyhow, our reservation seemed to have fallen through even though Cece C called in the day before. We probably should have just gone through OpenTable, but it still seemed a little fishy. What's worse is that I later saw that Mustard's Grill is eligible for 1000-pt reservations!
I ended up ordering the Truckstop Deluxe, which is a dynamic menu item. I'm assuming it changes weekly. According to their menu, it's "[a]lways meat, usually potatoes, rarely vegetables". As such, the price changes as quoted. On Sunday, it happened to be a 21-day aged ribeye steak with chocolate BBQ sauce and potatoes, asparagus, and yellow beans on the side. Initially, the thought of sweet on a savory-type dish scared me. The waitress told us that the BBQ sauce contains cocoa beans. After tasting, I'd say most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference if they never saw the title. It was definitely better than I thought, so that was a nice surprise.
I also ordered one of their signature highball drinks - Mo's Spa Treatment: Charbay Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka, cucumber, basil, & a splash of soda. I'm a fan of greyhounds, so this seemed to fit the bill just right. Sure enough, it tastes pretty much like a greyhound. I probably should have been a bit more adventurous for $12, but I already took one leap of faith with the chocolate BBQ sauce.
Would I return? Probably, but there are so many great restaurants in Napa that I'd rather try somewhere new before committing to a return visit.
great spot for lunch! at our table we ordered the burger, pulled pork sandwich, chinese chicken salad, ahi sandwich and onion rings all of which were amazing other then the ahi sandwich which still had great flavors just a bad cut of ahi. after lunch we shared the peanut butter/chocolate pie slice and hazelnut chocolate cake yummm! the service here is very nice and the restaurant is so cute, i highly recommend stopping in.
This is a cute restaurant right off of CA-29! I had called earlier in the week to make reservations for Saturday night - they only had a 6pm or a 9pm! Luckily we took a chance and called again Saturday afternoon - and they had a cancellation! Perfect!
We started off with the sweet corn tamale appetizer. This was really good - sweet but topped with guacamole and pumpkin seeds. All the flavors really went well with this appetizer. We also got the famous pork chop and the lamb shank. The pork chop was really good - sweet teriyaki like sauce, nice heaping of mashed potatoes and the red cabbage was sweet but good. Pork chop was very tender and juicy- not dry at all. The lamb was perfectly done with mushrooms and peas mixed in with the mash potatoes.
Service was lacking a bit here. Out waitress wasn't the most friendliest person out there. The 'help' of the restaurant who filled our cups with water and refilled on bread was really good though. But I felt that our waitress ignored our table a bit. We had to wait a good 5-10 mins to pay our bill because our waitress didn't come by our table to pick up the check and credit card. I would def. come here for the food again - really delicious!
I love Mustards! It was nice way to finish off a nice visit in the Napa Valley. Our waiter was really great and made some really good recommendations, basically recommended the whole menu. I had their Famous Mongolian Pork Chop with sweet & sour red cabbage, housemade mustard ($25.95 - http://www.yelp.com/bi...). Man that was good! And huge portions, just look at my pic. I don't remember what everyone else ordered on my table but it looked like everyone liked what they ordered too. I would love to come here again next time I get the chance to make it out to the Napa Valley.
I have heard so many good things about this place that I finally had to try it. I ordered a three green salad and a skirt steak. My date ordered the same salad and a chicken sandwich. The place is very average inside. The service is good, however, the food is just average. I asked her how her sandwich was and she's like 'it's ok", but not a lot of flavor. My steak was average and the french fries were just warm and not very tasty. I don't get it. I don't get the raving reviews. I didn't drink as I had to drive home and had drank all day. I'm sure they have a good wine list, but to me the food is just eh. Rutherfood Grill to me is 2 pegs better.
Ambiance. This place is popular, so be ready to deal with a serious crowd. It's well deserved too... this place is good. It's superb location, nestled between the wineries in Napa Valley, naturally lends itself to being a lunch stop.
Service. Very good. We ate at the bar and while the bartender was very busy, the quality of service never slipped and she was very knowledgeable with the menu.
Food. The pork tacos as a starter were fantastic, and easily split between two people. As a meal, the Sonoma Rabbit Cooked Two Ways was especially good. It's always nice to see game meat on menus, something different than the usual chicken and beef.
A friend recommended this place if I go to Napa. My whole family took a trip to Napa and we had lunch at this restaurant. We didn't wait long for a table even though place was packed. Great food & wine with welcoming atmosphere, the service was accommodating, and the price was fair compared to other restaurants in the area. It was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. I'm looking forward to returning.
What can I say other than you can not leave Napa without stopping for their lemon lime tart. It's to die for!
Food and service is great as well.
