"But I don't like mustard...."
"Jas...it's Mustard SEED Cafe. You don't have to eat mustard..."
"Okay..."
And not eat mustard did I. This cafe is very down-to-earth and kind of has a cute old diner feel to it. Their menu is pretty big, and the food is solid. I ordered the rosemary turkey burger. Oh yummmmm! The rosemary goes perfectly with the turkey and adds a refreshing twist to the turkey burger. Have it on toasted rosemary bread and you have yourself a delicious, juicy meal. I had it on a side of greens, and you really couldn't go wrong with this! Other people ordered omelettes and pancakes which all looked delicious. If I were closer, I'd come here more often!! :) -

I've only ever come on the weekends for breakfast and it's always SO busy. I came once with three people and it was impossible to have a conversation among the three of us. That being said, I do enjoy their breakfast. The green eggs and ham is great (however anything with pesto on it agrees with me) coffee is good.
Service has always been very good, if not a little delayed. But that's because its the weekends and its packed, so I get it. Everyone is friendly. Ambiance leaves a little to be desired, but the prices are good! -

Yum. Green eggs and sam are good! Love the garlic bail pesto they put on the eggs.
Unfortunately my roasted potatoes were a little too roasted and unedible. The skin was so hard I couldn't cut through it. Perhaps ill play it safe and get the fruit next time -_-. -

I salivate at the thought of going back to Mustard Seed Cafe for brunch.
The space is tiny, old-diner style. And the food matches perfectly. A vast selection of egg dishes and a bottomless cup of coffee is all you need to start your day off right.
Mustard Seed Cafe keeps it simple. Simple like me. -

Love this place. Rosemary Turkey burger brings me back every time. The staff is quirky but very nice. My waiter called me "youngster" despite the fact that I'm clearly his elder but it was nice to be considered a youngster. My wife loves the chai latte.

OK, I LOVED this place. I came for a late breakfast with a friend and we happened to spot it across the street from Alcove, which is where we were originally headed. Granted, this place is not as cute as Alcove, but its half the price, the breakfast menu makes way more sense and the portions are HUGE! Did I mention the noise level is half and you won't have to wait 2 hours to be seated? I found the food to be very satisfying and I really liked the quality of the espresso in my latte.
This is the kind of place that I plan on frequenting and recomending to friends.
The only downside is that all the tables are squeezed together, so you really have no privacy. If you need a place to break up with your girlfriend then this is definately not the place, unless you don't mind breaking up to 30 people simultaneously. -

Ended up here on a rainy Sunday morning. Sorry, but this place was really my 4th choice of brunch places for that morning. For some odd reason, although it was raining and pouring, everyone and their moms were out for brunch! I guess I was one of those crazies myself...
The staff was extremely friendly here and although there were a few people in line before me, the wait was no more than about 10 minutes. Seating was way too crammed and I felt like I was dining with about 6 other people. For food, I ordered the Santa Fe Omelet and it was really good...but oily. All in all, not only did I walk out with a filling meal, I learned about my dining neighbor's life story.
true story. -

Not as pretentious as other cafes....and what's even better is that the food is great!!!
The atmosphere is quite cozy.....the space isn't so big so you do get a bit intimate with your neighboring food goers ha...not a bad thing mind you but it creates a great atmosphere...
Service was quite lovely as well...got our food at a speedy time...we ended up ordering egg in a hole as well as the green eggs and ham....hey it was St. Patty's so had to keep with the spirit of things right?
Would love to go here again....if you just want to eat and not have to worry about putting on a prom dress.....you should definitely check this place out.... -

My sister and I were craving some brunch on a rainy Sunday, so we decided to check this place out. I was expecting a lot more because so many reviews mentioned that this is one of the best brunches out there... but I thought it was alright. Service is a bit on the slow side, but everyone seems to be very friendly. Seating is a bit crowded so you almost feel like you're of your neighbor's conversations.

I came here for brunch after hiking the Hollywood Sign. This particular restaurant is small and inconvenient for large groups. Sadly I was with a large group. I would have liked to have booted some out of my group, but that wouldn't have been very nice. Since our group was large, we had to wait a while to be seated together. We eventually took two booths.
I ordered the turkey club sandwich and from what I remember it was good. I am particular about turkey clubs in that the turkey has to be roasted from an actual turkey and not one of those processed deli meats that is becoming popular nowadays. I was able to get avocado on my sandwich which made it even better! I was surprised with the great flavor of the potato salad. Delicious!
In the future, I'd prefer to get food to go and avoid avoid the horrible Sunday lunchtime wait. -

I do! I do like green eggs and sam! I like them, sam I am! The food here is wonderful, and had my review been solely based on that they'd deserve the extra star, but alas that is just not the case. I've been here quite a few times, so I'm not judging them harshly on one bad experience or anything like that.
I subtracted one star for ridiculous parking, frantic waiters on busy days, and mediocre coffee (last time, apparently they were out of creamer and gave me SKIM milk as a replacement without notification. UGH.) -

Only rarely do I write critical reviews, but Mustard Seed earned an exception.
Fuck this place. It was bad enough that we waited--and were ignored--for 15 minutes before finally deciding to leave. When we did, the waiter/host/main dude finally asked if we were ready to order, to which I said "Well, we were!"...and then he shrugged with no indication of an apology for wasting our time. Not until I said "No apology, no nothing?" as I walked out the door did he make any effort to console a disappointed customer.
Of course, during that 15-minute wait, he had time to take a picture of some other guests, take the order from another table that arrived after us, chit-chat behind the counter, refill a coffee, and offer a big smiley hello to somebody that was presumably a regular.
Mustard Seed, listen up: I live in the neighborhood. I work at home. I make a decent income. I blow much of it on meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and always tip 20% or more. It's too bad that I will no longer consider your cafe as an option for any of those meals, because my previous visits weren't all that spectacular, and the reviews from others indicate that my experience wasn't unusual. Get it together! -

My pancakes were good. My girlfriend's tuna melt quesadilla was pretty awesome. Ditto on complaints of slow service. Comically inattentive wait staff.

This place is the best. Not only is the food great, but the prices are extremely reasonable and the service is warm.
My parents were in from out of town last week, and this was their absolute favourite. We did breakfast one day, dinner another and they wanted to go back again another time before they left!!
The portions are great, the service is quick and friendly.
We love Mustard Seed. -

I don't think even one star should be given to this establishment.
Boyfriend and I wanted to get some delicious breakfast and coffee. Only one was given to us. The coffee. The blonde long haired waiter took our order and after seeing 3 count em THREE other customers get their breakfast. my boyfriend asked our waiter where our food was. (we had been waiting for 40 minutes)
Replying with "it's coming soon... Or is it?" and checked his tickets... Only to find he didn't...we ended up leaving very annoyed.
I wonder who owns this business? Maybe get better staff... I bet the food would've been good if we had the chance to eat it. -

Breakfast lovers, this place is amazing! The menu is different and the food is just a chunk of joy. The AA eggs are made to perfection and how you like 'em, I haven't had better breakfast anywhere in LA, and I know breakfast. Do your taste buds a huge favor and try the Bruschetta Breakfast! -God bless.

First off, I'd like to mention how difficult it is to find parking. Once you get over that hurdle, the cafe is nothing special in terms of ambiance. It's a very drab looking cafe and the furniture is very old.
It took a few minutes for us to be helped and seated even though they were not busy.
I ordered the B.L.A.T. sandwich with a green salad. The sandwich was supreme and I will definitely be visiting again for that. The green salad was lackluster as the dressing was lacking and had a sweet flavor. I didn't understand the inclusion of broccoli with the greens and carrots as raw broccoli has a bitter flavor.
Our server hardly paid any attention to us and left us alone for quite a while.
All in all, the food is great (minus the green salad), parking is a burden, and management needs to improve. The four stars is for the bacon sandwich which I am salivating over right now. -

I remembered thinking that this little cafe had decent food. I'd eaten here once for brunch. Husband and I went here after a painful dentist visit.
Because my teeth were sore, I ordered a salad (which had most ingredients listed in it as chopped to begin with) and requested that it be chopped. The sole waiter/cashier/food runner said:
"Ooooh.... They don't really do too well with the chopping. And also I'd have to charge you extra for that. I really wish I had a better answer."
We were one of three couples, but it took 40 minutes to get my non-chopped salad (and another 5 to chop it myself). They forgot my water, served friends who came in before us, and put foam on my foamless latte. I had requested dressing on the side, but it came mixed in.
"Ooooh... do you want me to have them make it again?"
"No.... we don't have that kind of time."
Bottom line: I paid $15 and an hour of my time for coffee and a salad I couldn't really consume. The staff is nice, but if you're over 25 and have things to do other than sit in a cafe, I'd say go somewhere run by grownups. -
Review from Troy H.
With the faith of a Mustard Seed, or shall I say, with the hunger of a Mustard seed, this place does the job. Many choices, many options. The breakfast burritos were the bomb. They have a regular breakfast burrito that has eggs, cheese, your standard bacon, chorizo, and grilled vegetables. The power burrito has everything but the kitchen sink. I did not have room for the power because I wanted some gelato afterwards.
They also have an awesome breakfast pasta! Yes, Breakfast pasta. Sounds strange, but I had a taste and it was awesome. I enjoyed the breakfast burrito with an Orange Juice and Coffee.
The service was good. They were as prompt as they could as crowded as they were.
Parking, well, to the street you go. There's residential and street parking you can confiscate. -
Review from Karen C.
Matt P. suggested this place after the Hollywood Sign Hike since there was a long wait at Trails so to the Mustard Seed Cafe we went! We found parking about a block away on a side street. This place is great for brunch because of the amount of food they give you.
Most of the items on the menu was around $10 so you should get your monies worth, if you weren't that hungry you could save have for another meal. The burritos were Chipotle sized and comes with additional sides.
I ordered the rosemary burger but instead of a bun had it sandwich style on top of rosemary bread! =) The turkey with its seasonings reminds me of Thanksgiving. The salad was quite interesting, not your typical green salad it included cooked zucchini, carrots and broccoli.
But the grass is greener on the other side because I saw Julia V's Chicken sandwich and was awed by it's girth! Just 1/2 her sandwich was like 3/4 mine O_O! Hehe so I offered half my sandwich for half of hers, and she agreed! Totally fair trade right? =p After eating the chicken sandwich I was pleased with it's juiciness but found it had less flavor than my turkey.
Mustard Seed Cafe is alright because of the numerous menu items, if you have the option of getting a side of the roasted potatoes do so. =) -
Review from Grace C.
Extensive menu. Ask the owner(?) or employee for recommendations.
I ate the Sunrise Sandwich with bacon, lettuce, tomato, melted cheese in a toasted croissant.. mmm.. so good for dinner. Too bad my stomach hurt afterwards because I ate all of it plus some cake from Alcove Bakery across the street. Next time I'll take the other half to go.
My bf liked his turkey patty with bacon sandwich. -

Chilaquiles!
Chiiiii-laaaaaaaa-quiles!!!
CHILIQUILEEESSSS!
So this place is super cute and a great option to a lot of the other brunch places on the weekend, and, I should mention, they have chilaquiles.
Our waiter was totally cute, and everything seemed really fresh. I'm not eating eggs or dairy anymore, so no more chilaquiles for me (sad sad sad) but they seemed to have a lot of options for the health-conscious person, meat eater or not.
Chilaquiles + hot waiter = thumbs up. -

Consistently good for lunch. Try a quessadilla or chicken salad sandwich with potato salad side. Large servings, friendly staff, but sometimes not too quick on dropping and processing the check/payment. Can get busy, with laptop users occasionally camping, but most times this place is a good bet for a good meal and fair prices. Street parking is always a challenge in the area, too.

Well....I'm not sure what to say. I always order the roast turkey sandwich. I like it because its on the healthy side and tasty. This time it was the same ingredients but the onions and tomato were grilled and a pile of greasy slop on top of an otherwise good sandwich. Yuck. Is this how it is served now? If not, I will not be ordering from there again.

I've spent more time at this joint wondering where the fuck my waiter was than actually enjoying the food.
Can I get another Diet Coke? Can I get my check?
Oh, that's right. He's off somewhere else talking about the rad show he played last night and by "show" he means a Silver Lake house party, and by "rad" he means there were 5 people who were on acid half-listening to the worst hippie music known to man. -

It's been a while since I've eaten at this restaurant. I ordered pancakes with rosemary potatoes and bacon. The pancakes came with banana and strawberry fruit topping. I told my waiter no fruit on my pancakes. You know what happened, there was fruit on my pancakes which were the driest pancakes I have ever eaten. No amount of butter or syrup helped.
The bacon was lukewarm (I'm being nice when I say lukewarm). T The rosemary potatoes looked and tasted like they had set out too long. I uploaded a picture of my breakfast. Not to appetizing. It's been 2 hours and my breakfast feels like a rock sitting in my stomach. Not a good meal at all. -

The food at this place was good. I appreciated the ability to order healthy food that still tasted good.
The service was ok, not awful by any means. The server kept calling me "young man" in this odd tone, but I'm pretty sure I was older than him. This made the meal slightly awkward. -

Okay so this was second time to Mustard Seed as we were in the area today.
I give it 4 stars more for hubby than for me or others. We went here a few months back after reading reviews here. Have to say that the place was nearly empty late lunch time on the weekend and again today dinnertime. We were the only people there.
That brings me to service. No bad, but not good. Would have thought with no one there we would be checked on. No such luck. Food took forever both times, but this last time was a bit absurd because there was no one else there and our food did not require a long time cooking. It was eggs for both of us in one form or another.
Greek Omelet hubby had was fantastic and he had it last time too. I have Veggie Sandwich before(ok but a bit dry if they add something moist, it would be very good).
This time I had the Egg Brushetta. On appearance it was so very basic and bread was burned underneath, but all in all flavor was OK. BUT, price is steep for what you get.
Kids Quesadilla was loaded with cheese. More that I have ever seen anywhere else(even mine). Daughter loved it.
Menus were dirty, cute idea to have silverware in a can on the table, but very unhygienic and no soda fountain is the pits. Who wants to pay for a can of soda and if you need a bit more, pay again? Aren't those days past? Charge a fair price for the soda and I'll buy another but not at their prices.
I did not feel this place is trendy at all especially when the place is empty and down the street everything is packed. Also nothing special inside or out. Some of the menu items are unique, but that's it. Only stopped because when hiking in Griffith Park this place is close by and we don't worry if we are a bit dusty. That should tell you something.
Plain old diner type feel with a slightly souped up menu. Still 4 stars as, no crowd either time, clean bathroom and hubby loved food each time. -

Dear Mustard Seed Cafe,
Please get your hiptard act together. It's beyond annoying to sit in your grimy restaurant, longing to be recognized as a paying customer while having to endure the two pretentious idiots ignoring customers as they talk about obscure bands amongst themselves. I get it - your mom once knew the drummer for Television and you own a Young Marble Giants t-shirt from '82. Whatever - just bring me my damn turkey burger! I have never received such abysmal service as I did in this establishment.
The food is actually pretty decent (not fantastic, but decent); however, I would never again subject myself to their "customer service" - if by "customer service" you mean: ignoring customers, letting cooked food sit for ungodly amounts of time and acting like a pretentious fool when you do finally bring the food.
This place is a joke - don't bother! -

Let's address the elephant in the room, shall we? The service. I have to say that it used to be that you had to literally BEG for your check or coffee refill. My friend at one point, marched in there and said if you don't give me my check right now and process it, I'm walking out without paying! Believe me....they got their act together. That was then.....
Now, we really don't have that problem. The service is always friendly. Never rude (and not that it ever was). They are attentive. Their coffee refill has gotten much much better, and the coffee itself is so freaking good! not bitter like other places.
The oatmeal is good. I usually get their scrambles with tons of veggies, sausage and goat cheese. it's pretty darn good. Today, I had a rosemary turkey patty with two poached eggs that totally ROCKED. I will dream of that turkey patty.
I have been here many times and will come back here. If only to sit on the patio in the middle of a nice neighborhood on a nice fall day. ;) -

Great food! I LOVE this hidden treasure in LF. I've never had there breakfast only dinner. I had the crab-cake dish and the tortilla soup for appetizer- both are GUMMY!! Salads are huge and really good.
Very chill and cozy place to hang out with friends for lunch or dinner. Breakfast looks delicious, can't wait to come back for that. -

Sat down, had to get back up and get my own menu, ordered, watched the waiter eat and chat with customers, 40 minutes later checked on our order, he forgot to put it up, we walked out. Sat there for no reason. Never again. They are also surrounded by much better places that are cheaper or the same price.

Food is 5 stars. Service is 2. Consistently great breakfast food. Consistently shoddy service. I'm torn because I like good service and good food but I keep coming back here because the food is just so good that it is worth the crappy service. Small space, disorganized seating structure especially when there are people waiting. Tends to bring in a real asshole hipster crowd which I can't blame the restaurant for but seriously, some of the customers are total self-absorbed douche bags or they're z list extras oh, I mean actors. Takes at least 15 minutes for a waiter to recognize you're ready to order food and at least another 15 to get it. Have never been in and out of here in under an hour, never. So come here on a leisurely weekend morning, prepare for bad service, and enjoy your meal!

The food was tasty and healthy. We had brunch there this past weekend and I was very pleased with the food being organic. The one suggestion I have is for the staff. Tables need to be attended more often. Customers should not have to ask for refills in multiple occasions nor ask you more than once for the check. Other than the service, this place is a must try.
