This places gets 10 stars! Not only is the food great! They are super dog friendly.

They served my dog a huge milkbone on a plate along with a fresh water bowl. Then we ordered a grilled chicken breast and it came all chopped up doggie friendly. She loved it!
Patio has a nice heater and the service is wonderful.
We are going back tomorrow for lunch!

There was really nothing good about this place.  Chintzy decor, below-average food, annoying locals talking about the waitress "covertly" by spelling things out about her, as if she were illiterate...

After we decided the waitress was okay, she left us sitting with our empty lunch plates for about 15 minutes before we decided we needed to get up and ask her for it.

We waited an HOUR for our food!!!

Our waiter seemed like he didn't want to be there, and when I asked for split checks, he gave me this look like he wanted to kill me!!!

Anyways, my brothers girlfriends dad (that was long) had the don juan steak (i'm forgetting the name right now) and he said it was definitely worth the hour wait.  I had the tortellini which was delicately cooked and tasty!  Everyone else enjoyed their meal as well...

Something has GOT to be done about their waiters!

Well this place has been around for a while and can be counted on for the Bar if nothing else. The food here used to be VERY good but has lost what it used to do best...

We were up here this past July and the food was bleh the selection was bleh... which if you have ever visited Cambria is NOT a normal happenstance this little village is best known for it's restaurants. If you want a place to watch sports and have a cold brew then this is the place for you but if you want a solid dinner or lunch that will make your palate happy there are other locations to pick and choose from.

My husband and I have eaten here once, and that was years ago. We hoped for the best and did not get anything close to it.

The building's nice, but it was like the staff didn't really care if we were there or not. They weren't rude or snobbish...just...kinda..indifferent.

The meal was not memorable, except that it was disappointing. I don't know if some of the more positive reviews will encourage us to give it another try or not. There are much better places to spend our money on much better food when we're in Cambria.

I'm sad to see so many bad reviews for this place.  My hubby and I go here every time we're in Cambria and we are consistently happy with the fresh pasta (the cheese ravioli was wonderful) and sauces.

The service can admittedly be hit or miss, but a "miss" here would be a waiter who just didn't have much in the personality department (but they were still very attentive).

Like most places in Cambria, it's not cheap, but it's a nice, friendly, tasty place for a casual dinner.

The food wasn't cheap, but it was pretty good. The service was OK. The most negative thing I have to say about it was that they automatically charged us 20% tip because we had a party of 6. For that reason alone I would never eat there again. I give that or more in tip if I get good service, but I don't like being forced to do it. I would have argued about it but I would rather just pay the $115 for lunch rather than argue about it in front of our guests from out of state.

I live in Huntington Beach and go up to Hearst Castle with visitors every year or two, but I won't be eating at this restaurant again.

This place is nice but the food isn't all that great. It's pretty ordinary for a pizza place/bar. I had a garlic shrimp pizza which was good but pretty saturated with oil and garlic. However, I love garlic so it wasn't all bad. The atmosphere is ok but I think the bar area is probably the best place to eat in. There's a little more action there than upstairs or on the patio.
I'd suggest this place but if you have a bit more to spend, try another restaurant in the area.

Dang, I'm sad to see such bad review for this place.  I really enjoyed it and had GREAT service.  I wish I nabbed the name of my waitress, she was a doll.  I ordered the mac n cheese with prociutto and peas.. I just about died of happiness.  Creamy, cheesy, fatty goodness.  My friend ordered the lasagna and the ragu on it was fan-freaking-tabulous.

Dishes run about $15-$24, which is average price for a nice sit down place in Cambria.

We drove 5 hours to spend New Year-2010 weekend in San Luis Obispo, and Mustache Pete's was the place we chose to have our New Year's eve dinner.

In one of the local brochure advertisements, Mustache Pete's states: "Best Italian Food in Cambria, or it's free!" -- Although it is not likely that we would ever take them up on it, unless the food is just really-really bad or we were mistreated somehow, places that dare to give you free food if you don't think its the best around is always (IMO) worth checking out. So, we did.

The ambiance is good, fitting of small-town family restaurant, decorated enough and there is plenty of space between tables. The restaurant was nicely decorated for the New Year's eve, and so we thought that was cool to put us in the New Year mood.

    STAFF: Generally Friendly

MENU SELECTIONS: were varied enough and generally typical of Italian restaurants.

SERVICE: Food servers were quick to bring the water, bread and refill throughout dinner. Our waiter was attentive and friendly the whole time. The restaurant was about 50% full when we were there and our service was very good overall.

FOOD: Good to very Good. I ordered Spaghetti Bolognese, which is always my "barometer" of an Italian Restaurant and I always order it when I visit an Italian Restaurant... no mater where I could be in the world, and Cambria, CA is no different (I do the same with Pad Thai to size-up a Thai Restaurant).

My Bolognese was very good! My son's Marinara was really average at best, but the rest of the people in our group were generally satisfied with their food. We ordered some Creme Brulees to share for desert, and it was very good.

PRICES: You have to expect to pay up to 20-25% more for food in San Luis Obispo, due to the special location. Mustache Pete's prices were understandably that much higher than equivalent restaurants in non-tourist cities ... so no problem.

RATING NOTE: Mustache Pete's earns a fourth star because the staff was friendly, service was good, they took an extra step to decorate and put is in the mood for New Year's, and even though I've sampled Bolognese from all over the world, Italy included, theirs wasn't that bad at all, I liked it very much! We would definitely go back.

To give this joint 4 stars is criminal.
One of the worst meals I've ever had.
Ordered a hot italian sub with ham, salami, cheese, etc.
What came out was a soggy mess with big chunks of ham that were at least half fat.
My wife's Margharita pizza was equally gross.
Stay away! Unfortunately, Yelp won't allow zero stars!

Came in, not expecting much, especially since we could tell our bread came straight out of the microwave. But, wow, when our meal came, we were definitely pleased. My lasagna was warm and bubbly, gooey with cheese and the sauce! My hubby's ragu, out of this world! Tastes just like it was stewed and cooking for hours, all of the flavors blended and popped so amazingly. We were so pleased!! We even had a nice magician entertain us. We went back the next night for a light salad. Pricey, at $15/plate, but nice for a quiet yummy meal.

I agree with the other reviewers here... Mustache Pete's had a lot of items to choose from but it's not even as good as Olive Garden (which isn't good).  The dishes we ordered (eggplant parmesan and meat lasagna) seemed too heavily salted and tasted like something I could've made myself (and I'm a not a good cook at all).  The only pluses are that our waitress was very nice, and they allow dogs on the downstairs patio area.

So on our trip we ate at Mustache Pete's. Its ok. But nothing spectacular. The normal kind of Italian place like you would expect. Service is pleasant, food portion is great for price. I gave them an extra star because their house wine is J.Lor, my favorite!

I have been here several times. The service is hit or miss. The food is decent, though.  Although I think it has been lacking as of late. And the tables aren't always the cleanest when you sit at them. ~ http://www.ChristianPe...

Maybe it was a bad day, but the restaurant wasn't very crowded. It was Happy Hour and the drinks were good and cold. I wish I could say that the food was good, but frankly it was unimpressive. I had a personal pizza, my partner had macaroni and cheese. Both had a lot to be desired. Service was substandard although the bartender-waiter seemed friendly enough. There were only three tables of customers and it seemed like serving food was not a priority. Anyway, seems from the reviews as if it is hit or miss here and we'd score it a big "miss". Probably will never be back to give it a second chance and we felt too embarrassed to ask for our money back in a place where they advertise "the best Italian food in Cambria or your money back". Hope the next Yelper has a better experience.

What a rip-off!  Avoid this restaurant when you visit Hearst Castle.
Water taste like detergent.  Second glass of water tastes like detergent.  Hmm...not a good sign.
Everything costs 50% more than normal.  Chicken pasta cost $23.
Food was awful.  I could make better food and I don't even cook.  What pissed me off the most was the AUTOMATIC 20% TIP FOR A PARTY OF 2!

Right upfront i need to say this review is not about the food. Thats because we never received any food. It was Saturday night, 10/10/09 and there was only one other table with people. we were sat at a table at 9, someone gave us water and bread and then nothing. we were never approached by the wait staff. twenty minutes later other people were sat at a table and waited on but we still were ignored. so after more then 20 minutes of waiting, we left. the restaurant was not busy. we were sat at a table that was clearly visible to the wait staff. but still nothing. all i can say it that the service was awful. not sure about the food. the water was good.

I have to believe the positive reviews of this restaurant are posted by either the people who work there, the owners, or people who know the owners.  We went a while ago and what a disappointment.  We were the only people there, but the waitress seemed more interested in her smoke breaks than serving us.  The food was marginal at best, and the portions were ridiculous, especially for the price.  This isn't fine dining!  I had the filet mignon, which was  joke for the price.  Overcooked mediocre cut of meat.  My husband had a small bowl of rigatoni and was hungry afterward.  I can't warn people enough to stay away from this place.

Great for dog lovers!  Mustache Pete's has a toasty heated outside patio for those with dogs in tow, and Mustache Pete himself even came out to reminisce about his own four-legged friend.  The food is good - I got an angel hair pasta dish that was tasty and my husband got eggplant parmesean.  Nothing was extraordinary, but the people were really nice and the ambiance was laid-back and casual.
