CAUTION: MAWL smites. David and Gina are smiters. You are hereby duly warned.

You see, each time we take a friend who's never been here before, he/she becomes smitten with MAWL. As will you be, ga-rawn-teed. How could you not, with all the beautiful art, lovely music, and delicious wine available for consumption?

With that in mind, how could we not make a stop here (Good Idea# 7) during our Epic Saturday™? David and Gina were warm and gracious as ever, and dare I say, Katie was hooked by their charms. Job well done by us, methinks. A $10 tasting was just the right way to spend a relaxing evening after our first try at paddleboarding. At this point we thought we'd get the wine sleepies and call it a night... but the adventure continued...

This is a small wine shop so you're not going to have the selection you may see in larger shop like High Times, but MAWL does an incredible job stocking interesting and quality wines that you may not find elsewhere.

David knows his wine and has steered me in the right direction so many times. Everyone's taste is different, but he somehow is able to give me great recommendations every time. This place has a great vibe, I highly recommend dropping in if you know wine and also if you just want to start learning.

I've had MAWL bookmarked since they had their wine at the elite event at grand central last year.

Fast Forward over a year later and I finally get to do the $10 wine tasting with my man.  I was looking forward to just chillin' and getting a little early afternoon buzz going.  We were the first ones there at 4.

Now here's the part where I might offend some people, but I'm just going to keep it real.  A few minutes after we walked in, a young couple walks in with their 4 year old daughter. They proceed to also do the tasting.  Their daughter wasn't out of control, but she was skipping around the store, staring me down, eating the cheese and crackers, drawing on their chalkboard, etc.  I don't have anything against kids, really I do not.  Even though I do not want any of my own, I think they are refreshing lil characters and I love the ones that are close to me in my life.  But seriously, you're going to bring your 4 year old to a wine tasting?  And, there's a sign clearly posted on the door that says "NO PERSONS UNDER 21 ADMITTED".

It was obvious the couple knew the owners. I can understand that the owners wanted them to be comfortable.

But ya know what ... ?  It took that 5th star away in my rating.
(OK enough about my kid rant)

I will totally come back.  $10 for 5 tastings and 3 types of wine and cheese to munch on while you do it is a helluva deal.  And, the wines are really reasonably priced.  We left buying a bottle and some bleu cheese along with the tasting.

We did enjoy ourselves here and I would come back.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: David and Gina are tops! They're amongst my fave people in all of OC. And, MAWL is the best place to spend $10 in OC. Seriously, five tastings for $10...and for another measly $10 you get three higher end tastings.

I almost always end up with a bottle of one of the tastings, and have started many a-long-night of drinking here. Plus! Now there's beer, and these full on schmancy tastings. David loves talking about wine, and now you can splurge on a full night of high-falutin' wines, cheeses, and more info than you ever thought you could know about them. I haven't done one yet, but one was all setup when I was there the other night, and I have a feeling I'll be spending $50 here very soon...

What? You still haven't gone? Hop to it, slackers!

Add MAWL to the list of 'Things to Do on the Cheap in Orange County.'

Weekends, the store offers themed wine tastings priced $10 for 5 tastes. A 'Smell-O-Rama' themed tasting provides stations throughout the store where you can compare different scents to the actual scent of the wine you're sampling. A game of 'guess that scent' in the wine, if you will. Being able to sample different scents and wine at the same time is great draw for those not familiar with wine tastings. It's great olfactory fun. You can sample cheeses too.

If you haven't the slightest idea about wine, fear not. The owners of the store are super knowledgeable about wine. They are super nice and not at all snooty or pretentious. In fact, the crowd here is typically nice. I'd say this place is ideal for a date or if you're bored and have $10 to spare. I'm looking forward to returning!

    Thanks for last night.

You were great.  I left the money on the table.

I saw you across the room at the yelp Event, and knew I had to have you.  You and your Three Spaniards.  The White Spaniard, Altozano as he's known to my people, a fruity subtle body with smooth edges tantalized me and before I knew it the Tempanillo known only as Protocolo had swept me off my feet with his delicately spicy taste and my smooth, glowing after taste.

Vina Borgia the Garnache bided his time and waited until all defense was down before taking me home for the evening.  That's how the Spaniards roll.

This is a great little wine store that offers a $10 dollar tasting (5 different wines to sample).  They also have cheese.  They showcase an artist and rotate the gallery quarterly.

The wines we sampled were moderately priced ($15-20 bucks if you wanted to take home a bottle or two).  It totally beats randomly choosing bottles at Trader Joes or BevMo (I usually pick one with a fancy or funny label, like the happy face one).  Very friendly service.  I definitely don't know a whole lot about wine, but the talk wasn't pretentious.  David and Gina are genuinely friendly folks who love sharing about wine and art.  We even had a friendly exchange of pizza parlor recommendations which I very much appreciated.

I can't say enough about this place.  The wines are great, David and Gina are wonderful, but the people here are spectacular.  Everyone is friendly and you always learn something new.  I have not gone back in a long time since I'm trying to cut down on expenses and consumption of alcohol but I would recommend everyone giving this place a try.  There are a lot of value wines here and David should have no problems recommending a weekday wine under $20 that will suit your needs.

Sign up for their e-mail since they give previews every week on whats going to be served.

I recently stopped by here and it's been on my mind ever since I tried some of their wine at the OYE at the Grand Central Station in Santa Ana. So, finally I made it in here.. I came here close to their closing hours and the chick working didn't try to rush me out. I told here what I was looking for and she helped me. Ended up that they didn't have the Grenache I had sampled at the OYE but I ended up getting a Shiraz. The name was Luchador and I will admit I was sold when I saw the label. http://www.josianswine... Yes, I bought a wine because the label looked cool and the girl working said it was a good wine.. Was it good.. Mmmmmm, It was OK. But, I am coming back for sure to check out some of the other wines.

Wine tastings every Friday and Saturday. Call for the hours because I forgot what she had said. But, I do recall that it is $10 for 5 flights and $10 you can sample 3 elite flights (better more $$ wines to sum it up).

Prices are good as well... My wine was $20 and some change!

Oh, don't get lost. it's right off the freeway on Valley View right after some place called Jake's Bistro in a little strip mall of stores.

I'm not a hardcore wino by any means, but after the last OC elite event, i've been dying to try this place. Justin B., Vanessa N., David L., Linda N. and myself ventured here on a Saturday night for the "Rodney Dangerfield" wine tasting. for $10 and 5 tastes, we were able to try lesser known wines (basically anything except the usuals like pinots, cabs, etc...) and gain valuable wine knowledge from David and Gina! they are both super friendly and definitely run a top notch business :) i thoroughly enjoyed my experience here and i will definitely be back to try some more wines!

p.s. for anyone that was at the elite event at Santa Ana, the #3 wine (sorry i still cant remember the name haha) that david was serving sells here for only $8! such a steal :)

How many places do you see that average 5 stars. Wowza. I feel like such a follower giving a good review:)

    David is awesome.

He served up 3 fantastic wines at the Yelp event last night. And they are very reasonably priced I might add.

The Altozano was a bit fruity and subtle. Both reds were phenomenal.

If you like Wine - get off your couch and head on down to MAWL and do yourself a favor by having a tasting and buying some bottles.

Warning: There's absolutely no way you can come to the $10 wine tasting and not leave MAWL with a bottle of wine.

After meeting David at the Yelp Elite event, Kristin C. and I have been dying to try out MAWL.  This last weekend was the perfect opportunity and we also had the pleasure of meeting Gina also!  We were able to experience the Rodney Dangerfield tasting ("these wines get no respect") and I left MAWL with a new-found understanding for good wine (needless to say, I respect the lesser known grapes/wines now too).  David is just so knowledgeable about wine and recommended the best fruity white wine ever (for only $10!).

Totally awesome experience.  We're going to return as often as our wallets and livers allow for it.

I have to say, I simply love MAWL because I love wine.  I love the variety and different vineyards that they feature in their tastings. Some are hit and miss, however at 5 for $10 any wine is an experiment for you learn what your pallet is.

I gave MAWL 4 stars because I dont like the way the have it layed out.  They need to connect the two rooms to expand it and bring a different atmosphere to the wine tastings.  Theres usually lots of people who have to stand  inbetween wine racks and this place can get crowded very quickly.

I also dont agree with people bringing there kids there.  I have a 9 yr old and if I go to MAWL, I get a sitter.  Sorry, but kids dont belong at a wine bar, PERIOD.

Thanks for a great night, David and Gina. I love the idea of tasting 5 wines in a certain family for just $10. The night we went we were tasting from a list of Cabernet Francs, which I had never tried before on its own but that David correctly pointed out is often blended with other varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon (a personal favorite of mine) and the often maligned Merlot.

After the tasting, I was inclined to do a little research into this mysterious Cab Franc and found that it is often made into ice wine in the Niagara Peninsula of Canada. Oh, Canada. How I love you.

    But I digress...

And more recently, this mysterious Cab Franc has caught the attention of growers in cooler areas such as Washington, Michigan and Long Island. Michigan State University apparently has a whole research program on Cab Franc. Seems a bit over the top, but being from the land of THE Ohio State University, one can expect nothing less of those crazy Michigan folks.

Anyway, what I loved most about this wine bar was it's vintage strip mall location where you look onto a tiled interior courtyard space which leads to other strip mall businesses. Takes me right back to the Midwest. And I loved the rotating art exhibits.

Plus, there seems to be such a laid back atmosphere here. It's as if friends can simply drop in for a chat, a tasting, and to pick up a new bottle of wine to try each week.

What's more, David and Gina are committed to retaining this family owned business feel while also growing their business through great events such as wine pairings and wine education OUTSIDE of the smaller strip mall location.

For instance, I am highly intrigued by their upcoming wine education and three-course dinner with wine pairings which will last over two consecutive Wednesdays at Park Ave. restaurant http://parkavedining.com/ in Stanton. At just $125 for two nights of classes, dinner and wine, you'd be crazy NOT to go out and support these two young but inspired partners in their quest.

The bf and I keep going back to Mawl when we need a bottle of wine for a party or some dinner thing.  Each time, Dave remembers our names and preferences suggesting the perfect wines.  We have yet to be given a bottle that doesn't suit our tastes and likes.  The wines at MAWL are well priced starting from the cheap to more expensive bottles.  The tastings we have gone to always open our eyes to new regions, grapes and tastes.

Even better, they have various cheeses during the tastings.  These cheeses can also be purchased to take home.  My fave is the Mango & Ginger Stilton.

I can't rave enough about this little store.

I came here last night for a 10 dollar tasting with what turned out to be some pretty decent wines.

The tasting we went to was a "blind" tasting. meaning they wrap the bottle in a brown paper bag and then pour you without you knowing what you're getting. cool idea, and they give you notes on the wines with hints as to where the grapes come from, etc. the most expensive wine in the tasting was only $15 dollars.

MAWL is a cool little.. and i stress little... shop. very nice people, service and crowd, and yeah.. $10 for a tasting you can't really beat.

one minor complaint on the tasting; maybe add an additional one to two seconds to the tasting pours. there was two distinct times where i knew the pour was a bit too light.

Oh, how I miss MAWL Wine!  Despite relocating to the Bay Area, I refuse to cancel my MAWL Wine Club Membership because David's choices are just so damn good!  He really knows his stuff and absolutely loves what he does.  I agree with Injured Party: this place is so unpretentious.  Of course, you have the occasional 40-and 50-somethings that come in with their nose to the sky but they are very easy to ignore.

David's wine choices and suggestions are all reasonably priced and very, very palate-pleasing.  In addition, his Friday and Saturday night tastings often go outside of the norm (Smell-O-Rama tastings, Name That Varietal tastings to name a few) and are ALWAYS packed and a ton of fun.

Last but not least, what other wine merchant do YOU know of that throws a Customer Appreciation party completely devoid of wine but choc-full-o' made to order tacos and margaritas?  David and Gina, I MISS YOU GUYS!!!!

Not sure what to do on a Friday or Saturday night????   For 10 dollars, you can experience music, art, wine, love.

I don't know about you, but usually all of that in one night costs about... Well, an arm and a leg!  MAWL is a great place for those who love wine, don't love wine, don't know a whole lot about wine, or think they know tons about wine.  No natter where you fit on that spectrum, David will provide ample knowledge of what you are tasting and even places and bottles to try.

What I love the most about MAWL is definitely the comfortable environment.

Mawl Wine has become the Friday and Saturday night hang out for wine lovers in the Garden Grove/Seal Beach area.  You say there aren't any wine lovers in Garbage Grove?  Ha!  Come to one of David's wine tastings and you'll change your mind.  Go ahead and pass up Morry's of Naples or BevMo on your way here.  It's a laid back and casual tasting environment and the owners always make it fun with originally themed tastings, like the Rodney Dangerfield tasting (wines that get no respect).  You get 5 tastings for $10, cheese samples are also included.  The cheese is paired with the wines of the night and is also available for purchase.  Their brie is always delicious!

The environment may be laid back but that does not mean the store is lacking in fine wine.  They have a great selection of wine at every price.  I have never been disappointed with any of the wine that David has picked for me.  He is very knowledgeable without being stuffy and snobby and seems to really love what he does for a living.  They will even ship wines for you to any part of the country (I think any) and it looks like they also do gift baskets.  So if you're looking for a nice bottle of wine to bring to a party or even a $9 wine to go with your dinner tonight, go to Mawl Wine.  It's worth the drive.

I met David representing Mawl at a yelp event last night and enjoyed 3 varieties of wine I will be sure to try again.... in fact I would go today or tomorrow to the tasting if I didn't already have plans!

As a red wine lover, I was especially impressed by a wine containing a grape garnacha from Spain.  Normally I go for a bold Cabernet Sauvignon and found that the garnacha has a similar intensity and spectrum of spicy/fruity undertones, but with a sweeter balance.  Apparently it is very affordable too... I'm impressed.

They really do need to extend out the star ratings to like 10 stars for businesses like this!

Everything that everyone has said is ever so true. Dave is so nice, courteous, and knowledgeable. I let him know that I'm just barely dipping my toe in the wine pool, but would love to learn more and develop a much broader palate since I enjoy fine dining so much. Dave made me and my friend feel so comfortable the entire time. He provided so much information with each tasting. We were there for their fabulous 5 tastings for a measly $10 bucks. You read that right party people. 5 tastings of quality wine for only 10 smackers. Holy recession buster Batman! On this fine evening we toured Italy and Sicily with two whites and 3 reds. My friend and I both enjoyed the first wine the best which was from the Ajello Vineyards. That wine was a Grillo-Cataratto: http://www.yelp.com/bi... You'll have to forgive my lack of details with the rest of the wines as I forgot to grab a menu. The pours are all a substantial amount. If you leave wanting more it will only be because you enjoyed them so much. My friend ended up buying a bottle of the first wine and networked with Dave for her business. The cheeses offered to open our palates were all delicious. I especially enjoyed the Manchego and the Dijon one. They also had a small refrigerator with a few different types of beers including Downtown Brown which I really like. The store itself is loaded wall to wall with bottles of wine ranging anywhere from like $13 to I believe $40. I don't want to spoil everything, so just take my word for it and know that a visit to MAWL is definitely a treat. Just know that they only do the tastings on Fridays and Saturdays, so check the website for their hours if that's what you're interested in. Dave really knows his stuff and would love to talk wine and food with you!

Everything you could ever be looking for in a wine store.

I came here on a whim with my brother as we were getting gear for Yosemite and Napa.  We were set that "gear" had to include "buttloads of wine".  So following yelp we arrived here.

Our trip would have been SHIT if we hadn't came here.

First off, this place doesn't necessarily believe that high prices equates to better taste.  This notion was a bit foreign to us as usually when you go to BevMo they just point at the most expensive one and say that it's the best.  Dave gives in depth insight in terms of finding amazing types of wines that you will never find on your own.  The selection is amazing and the flavors are mind blowing.  We bought a 20 dollar bottle which undoubtedly blows the pretentious and far inferior Opus One out of the water.

The music is varied and complements the experience here nicely.  The artwork that adorns the walls are varied but somehow are cohesive and interesting.  It isn't your typical Napa landscapes or that po-mo crap.  Just drinking a glass while looking around creates an unique experience.

But on top of that you MUST come to him before going to Napa.  We had made reservations for tastings at the typical places: Opus One, Berringer, and various others.  He politely stated that if it was up to him he would cancel all of them.  He proceeded to make a long list of wineries and restaurants he would go to.

Unfortunately we could not make reservations to his top 5 wineries due to lack of appointment availability, but the ones we could make to were AMAZING.  We kept some of the bigger bougie ones and they could not compare WHATSOEVER.  One was the Pride winery and the wines were spectacular, the guide was personal and extremely knowledgeable, and during our tasting the guide even showed us the CAVE and we drank wine out of the barrel which undoubtedly had the best tasting wine I ever had.

We had reservations and French Laundry and Boucheron but on top of that we ate at two places that Dave recommended.  We paid FAR less and I can firmly state it was some of the best food I ever had in my life.  Just honest, open, and spectacular dining...

Frankly if we hadn't come to MAWL before our trip I would have HATED Napa.  I love wine but a lot of it can be gimmicky, annoying, and fake.  Dave's suggestions opened my eyes to how spectacular wine tasting and Napa truly is

One of the Best places I have ever been!

It's a place for friends and meeting people! Filled with Music, Art, Wine, Love, and Fun! But I don't think MAWLF sounds as appealing as MAWL.

If you have the chance I would suggest just stopping by on a Friday or Saturday for their affordable and great tasting wine tasting events.

Try the unique beer on tap too!

One of the greatest things is to get a climate and temperature controlled storage locker there to keep your expensive bottles safe. You also receive 10% off purchases if you are a "Cave member."

As I said before, my first visit was a private tasting for 10 people. I believe the person we went with won it in a silent auction or something. David is quite the host and the highlight was when he uses his little pseudo sword to open a bottle of champagne.

My wife and i have since been back for many of their weekly tastings (Friday and Saturday evenings). it's $10 for 5 samples, which is a tremendous bargain. The pours are always generous and on a couple of occasions my wife has asked for a second sample to insure she wanted to buy a couple of bottles and they have always obliged, no questions asked!

They always put out cheese and crackers for all their tastings and they do a great job of finding unique cheeses. My favorite so far is a Piave cheese from Italy. I always feel welcome and they act as if they are happy to see me again.

I love this place and would encourage anyone to pay them a visit, you won't be disappointed!

This place really is great!  We go about once a month to do a tasting and pick up our wine club "shipment"  The wines are always excellent and I love the atmosphere.  one thing I do wish is that they would have more gourmet items available during the week for purchase.  You can purchase cheese on the weekends.  The monthly wine club  selections are great with recipe's of what to pair them with.  OK I rarely cook and someday I may try one of the recipe's.
Love this place and am glad to see a little culture in the old GG.

This is a fantastic wine store.  The owners are very friendly and make you feel right at home.  David is very knowledgeable.  If they ran out of what I'm looking for, David recommends something similar, and he is always on the money.  I love the tastings, too.  I always end up wanting all of the featured wines because they are all soooo good!

We visited after seeing the write up in the OC Register.  One word, is AWESOME!  Not only were we made to feel like friends, the wine was great, cheese amazing and there was no pressure to buy at all.  It was a lovely way to end the week.  What a hidden gem, part of me doesn't want too many people to find it!  Love it!

Ditto to what every yelper that posted 5 stars said about this place.  I'm embarrassed to say that we used to go to wine tastings at BevMo to learn about wine.  Big mistake.  Thank goodness we stumbled across MAWL 2 years ago.  If you have an hour, maybe two, to spare on Friday night or any time Saturday between 12-8pm, stop by this wine store.  Pick David's brain, chat with Gina, you'll see what all the hype is about.

We chanced upon MAWL, a new wine shop in a nondescript office complex near Cypress, off the 22 freeway.  This is a comfortable little wine shop that specializes in small label boutique wines that are also very affordable.  They have a small selection of caviar and cheese as well.  There is a distinct lack of pretentiousness about the place but it doesn't have the supermarket feel of, say, a BevMo either.  This is a cozy operation where the proprieter is happy to offer you his take on each wine, as he has tasted every wine in the shop and can give you a detailed history of each winery.
I would definitely recommend the Friday/Saturday tastings especially if you're stopping by on the way to dinner.   It's only 10$ to taste about 5 wines, and they're pretty generous pours.  This is a great addition to the Los Alamitos/Garden Grove area.  It's not an LA wine bar, it doesn't have to be.  It's everything that Bottlerock aspires to be but isn't.

Great concept and great wines at reasonable prices.   It's all about selection and finding out what you like - MAWL offers both.  Tasting is key because it's what you like that counts.  Proprietor creates a great environment to do the above.  If you like wine at all, you owe it to yourself and your community to go to MAWL.

What a great place.  I came in on a Thursday and enjoyed some wine tasting as well as the fellowship of a wonderful group of regular customers.  I wish I lived closer as I'd be a regular too, but San Diego is just to far of a commute.   Thanks Dave!!

This place is a gem!  The owners of this wine shop are the nicest people.  The wine is always great and the atmosphere is so welcoming.  They have tastings on Friday and Saturday evenings....So it's perfect place for first dates, group outings, or just to stop by and grab a quick drink before or after dinner.  I highly recommend this wine shop.

MAWL is fantastic!!  From their wine selection, competitive pricing, atmosphere, music, tasting events but most of all their exceptional customer service!!  David Scales is one of the most knowledgeable people I have encountered in the OC wine scene.  Both he and Gina are friendly and enthusiastic.  No pretentiousness here which is something I find so refreshing. Wine selection is varied and ever-changing but you can always find some real gems.  Definitely ask for their recommendations.  They won't steer you wrong.  Friday and Saturday tastings are fun, affordable and great place to meet others interested in wine.
