Excellent little gem tucked behind what looks like a bunch of random office buildings. It's not very large in size, but it's one of the few museums I've been to where it's actually worth your while to read and try everything. You don't get "overwhelmed" by the sheer amount of info. they try to throw at you and can enjoy the anecdotes presented.

Great music selections from a wide time period. Strange that they seemed to neglect some of the most modern developments, but the emphasis on earlier music is neat because it shines a spotlight on stuff I didn't know existed.

I was most intrigued by the many changes in advertising methods over the years... shows just how much of a business aspect there is to even an artistic discipline like music. Of course, this might also be because it's sponsored by and located right next to the offices of a major instrument company.

Like the other comments have mentioned, the best part is at the end when you get to make the music yourself. Though it seems like a good number of instruments are constantly being repaired thanks to careless visitors, there were plenty of guitars available when I visited and getting to play a theremin is a really cool experience. You could easily spend hours here just jamming away.

The gift shop was oddly eclectic with lots of random bells and whistles but few instruments or books actually on sale.

I really enjoyed our tour of this museum plus the free jazz concert we were treated to. There was actually a $5 donation suggested, but the lady there who ushered into the concert just pushed us to the seats and told us not to worry about the donation.

After the concert we went through the museum. The admission is very low and is well worth it. It goes through the history of instruments and the progression of how music and musical instruments have gone through the times.

The best part is the little room where kids (and adults) can play with various instruments and even do some scratching on the turntables. Very nice place to spend an hour or so with the kids.

Great museum for children and adults alike. Located behind the Flower Fields in Carlsbad, the museum is home to over 500 vintage instruments and specialty exhibits that they feature throughout the year. On weekends they hold great concerts and other enjoyable events.

This is a wonderful place to learn about instruments, music and music history. It is an interactive experience where can push buttons and even play some of the instruments.

The museum also rents out their space for events such as corporate cocktail parties to award ceremonies. They also do outreach programs in an effort to support music in all sectors of the population.

They publish a monthly newsletter available for members and supporters. You can also view past newsletters online: http://www.museumofmak...

This museum is amazing if you love music and instruments.  Not such a great place with the under 5 crowd until you get to the room where you can put on a head set and bang on drums.  At that point it becomes hard to leave.

This place is surprisingly great! It started out as a sort of curio storage cabinet for the many famous members of the association. Soon, they realized how many people wanted to see some amazing history.
They spent the time to make it comfortable and professional, with everything from descriptive placards to instruments you can play. (Note that the electric guitar has headphones...so you can really jam!)
When you get, be sure to ask one of the docents to walk you through. They are amazingly informed and patient. Maybe the patience comes from the busloads of kids that tour through there at various times.
It's the sort of place that pro tours set up on people going to LegoLand, San Diego Zoo & Wild Animal Park, but that Carlsbad and other North County Coastal locals seem to miss out on. Oh well. Check it out.
Oh, and if you check the calendar ahead of time, you might be able to catch the special exhibits they get in from time to time (everything about Gibson guitars from wood to studio) and also performances and hands-on workshops. Quite an amazing place with a lot going on.
