What a great little shop!
You kinda have to hunt for the Muse Coffee Co. because if you blink as you're driving by on 10th, it would be really easy to miss. Make it a point to stop in though - well worth it!
It's a pretty small little shop - but it's got style. I especially liked the artwork on the walls. At the time of this writing, it was some great photography of fall leaves/collages. Very nice. Fit perfectly for the feel of Muse - especially on this particularly gray and rainy November afternoon.
Now, on to the most important thing: The coffee.
Ahhh! Finally! An exceptional americano! So good! I like my americanos to have just a tiny layer of black/brown froth on the top. I think it kind of differentiates between a good barista and an average one. And the gal who made mine at MUSE made it perfect!! Four stars for the coffee alone. The pastries looked good too! (next time)
This place was silent like a library. Which I found to be a little odd. But everyone in here was pretty much tuned out on their wi-fi. Whatever. That's cool. Just kind of made it a little impersonal.
I don't find myself in this part of Queen Anne very often, but when I do, I think I'm going to make a couple of extra turns just to stop in to Muse.
4 Stars - for excellent coffee!
It's a little bit out of the way, but Muse Coffee Company is worth the trip. The place seems like more of a local hangout, which makes sense. Muse is at the upper reaches of Queen Anne, and while you don't quite need a compass and the North Star to find your way here, it's not a part of town that you happen to wander into often. Everyone in the shop seemed to know each other and the barista knew all the patrons by name (except me, the interloper), which is cool.
The place is fairly small, perhaps room for a dozen or so, but cozy. There are some hanging lights across the counter and the room is oriented into three separate sections: a few tables with chairs, a small sofa section and a counter near the window. There are appealing parts to all three areas, although I only tested the tables. The latte was very good and above average for Seattle and I had a slice of the German Chocolate Cake (very tasty!) which I heartily recommend.
And the vibe here is very friendly; the barista even wandered over between customers to chat and inquire about the pastries. Recommended.
How many times in 72 hours can one go to the same coffee shop without it being classified as stalking?
My husband and I clearly pushed this limit when visiting our insanely lucky friends who live around the corner from Muse. What a delightful independent coffee shop! The lattes = good. The vibe = good. The dog friendliness = good. I am officially very jealous of our friends who could go here every day. I'm not sure it's worth the cost of a plane ticket from London to Seattle, but next time we visit, I'll be resuming my stalking of this delightful little place.
Muse is my home away from home. From owner Brent on down to everyone who works at Muse, all are super friendly and not just following the formalities. I've seen Brent held packages for neighbors when the UPS driver comes, to watching the kids while mom runs a short errand. Do you know any place who does that these days? They know *everyone* by name; and if you are a first timer, you'll feel welcomed from the get go.
The coffee is always awesome, served perfectly without being snobby. The espresso is really divine. The pastries are always perfect; and lately they've added Caffe Affogato, which is espresso with a scoop of vanilla or chocolate gelato, which frankly is to die for.
All this set in a beautifully decorated spot with outdoor seating, and you just can't ask for more. I am tempted to move to Queen Anne just so I can call it my neighborhood cafe.
My coffees here have been somewhat inconsistent, but only in the flavor potency. The quality has always been excellent, and the fine touches of craft barista-ing really show in the best of these independent coffee shops.
The staff at Muse are pretty friendly, the decor is clean and simple, the coffee is smooth and smokey. The service has gotten notably faster since my first few times coming here, and such an improvement is worthy of accolades, in my humble O.
Whenever they have a Ginger-Pear Muffin (that's not an allusion to a redhead's genetalia) left over, I snag it 'cos they're quite a unique treat to behold. The cake slices are a bit over my cake-slice price range, but they look scrumptious and it tempts and mocks me everytime I visit. Bastard cake.
how have i not reviewd this place?
when i want espresso, this is really the only place to go. it's perfect- rich, smokey, creamy, and round. i love the misty valley eathiopian, now on mornings when we don't wanna leave the house we can have a perfect frenchpress at home.i'm saying it's the best coffee in town, and i mean it- plus, i'm so lucky that it's so close to my home and that my boyfriend and i can walk the dog to muse. love this place.
I LOVE MUSE
This is one of the coffeehouses in my travels that inspires me to love coffeehouses again. I'm used to the NY or busy big city coffeehouse where it is loud, jockey for seats, sketchy internet connection, bad coffee, etc.
This place is awesome. Super friendly owner and counter people, and I stayed there all day once and they were very cool about it. quiet atmosphere to do a lot of work. tons of outlets for computers, etc.
So perfect because of the fireplace, community bulletin board, awesome interior design.
My BF lives across the street and I just love being so close to them. Bravo!!!
The decor, coffee, atmosphere, baristas...it all works really well here. The chic yet funky decor is modern and inviting; the coffee tasty and well-priced; and the cookies looked particularly delish.
Watch out for the bathroom, though; the door is darn near see-through. I'm not a fan, but to each her own.
Dfens at coffee shops? What the hell am I wasting my time at a coffee shop instead of the Lusty Lady for Christ Sakes? Well this is the only neighborhood coffee shop in walking distance of West Queen Anne. And when I say walking distance I mean one fat lazy bastard (me) and my legendary 3lb sidekick, Amelie the dog http://static.px.yelp....
But if I had to choose a coffee shop to be nearby it would be Muse. Of course there's free wi-fi which is a must. The space is on the smaller school yet they still manage to fit a few of tables inside and number of chairs outside. There's even a couch and plenty of outlets for the computer and though the place is rarely empty it's never quite full meaning that you can grab a cup of joe without being forced to share a table with "Big Fat Smelly" Joe. Of course if you're into that kind of kinky stuff I'm not judging.
The space is well designed. When you walk in you'll see two really cool hanging lights that are decorated with notes with sayings such as "the truth is between the lines". The lighting is perfect and the place is well kept. And let's not forget the infamous yelp sticker on the door.
You'll also notice a chair hanging by the ceiling near the window. Yes, you can sit in it. Hera's proof http://www.yelp.com/bi...
The prices of the drinks are average which is good for an independent coffee shop. And everytime I've gotten a drink here it was well put together. They also offer the typical variety of muffins and breads.
This is a neighborhood coffee shop which means that you don't have 8 teenagers in a Starbucks apron throwing together drinks while plotting where they're going to hangout after work. I think this I s a good thing but some people rather have chicks talking about the NKOTB reunion which is fine with me (I's a Backstreet Boys fan myself)
The owner is also really nice. In a time when a majority of businesses are run by a bunch of mean and grumpy people, Brent the owner is really cool. He used to have a yelp review posted here but I think too many of you cheap yelp bastards must have taken advantage of the free cup of coffee he offered. Thanks a lot of guys because Seattle Yelp could have had a "spike the coffee" DYL here.
Then again I heard that you can bring flasks to the Lusty Lady..
A business friend and I had coffee today at Muse. I was very pleased with many aspects of this visit!
The soy latte was rich and creamy and the perfect temp (and I"m uber picky about my coffee and espresso).
The art on the wall was delightful and inspiring (oh yeah...i can do that too...NOT)
And the environment was perfectly quiet allowing us a wonderful conversation without screaming.
There isn't a plethora of seating inside Muse but it was perfect for our occasion to catch up!
I spend a lot of time staring into lights. I also spend a lot of time at coffee shops. Muse Coffee Company has the coolest string of lights that I've ever had the pleasure of staring into. Corneas be damned!
This is a coffee shop that fits all kinds of needs. There is a cozy couch area if you're having an informal meeting, a few tables so you can get some work done, and an enclosed wicker swing chair for when you just want to Yelp alone.
The barista seemed to care if I liked my drink and happily answered all of my questions about the lights while lovingly making my drink and he even noticed that the mug was too hot for me and offered me a napkin without me saying anything except a few ow ow ows under my breath.
And, after drinking coffee and spending "so much time you should pay rent" you'll probably have to use the bathroom and this one is downright charming and doesn't require a key attached to a bucket or a chicken.
Seems like the proprietors understand that a coffee shop should be equal parts coffee and shop. Love it here!
Design is important to me. I like things things that are both modern and comfortable, be it clothing, architecture or interiors. I was happy yesterday when I walked in here and found it to be both these things.
I feel like a 'sexy, but lived in' feel is always tough to pull off, but these folks seem to have nailed it. Sleek grey walls, a flannel couch, and a funky paper chandelier keep it modern. The gas stove and vintage lamps are a nice touch, as is their bathroom: a cute color scheme and stenciled walls... I happen to like it when businesses don't forget about their 'janes.' Nicely done, Muse.
I was a barista in college and worked at Starbucks when the shots were still pulled by a real live person... crazy, I know! I remember making drinks on the La Marzocco (possibly the best of the commercial machines) and really loving my coffee. They happen to have one of these bad boys, which made one hell of an Americano (in the cutest for here cup) for me yesterday afternoon.
The pastries looked fabulous (scones, cookies, and slices of cheesecake and pies as big as my head!) and the service was lovely.
I'll be back. They make damn good coffee here and that pastry case is calling my name.
Great ambiance, quiet and pleasant.
Friendly service with warm smile.
Cute art,
OK or ...little disappointing cappuccino...hoped it had more creamy thick forms.
An excellent local coffee shop with a very neighborhoody thing going on. The owner seems to know everyone - and everyone knows each other to boot. So a great vibe, also a pleasant interior, good coffee and free wifi.
I'll be stopping by again if I'm ever in the neighborhood.
Reading the other reviews, they kind of summed up a little of what I felt when I first checked this place out. I didn't particularly like the remodel, and I got this real sense of "trying too hard" from the owner/barista.
I guess I was used to these coffee jerks at least acting cooler than me, but that phenomenon should be discussed in a different location.
Anyways, whatever. I'd recommend this place to anyone. I also wish luck to the new owner.
Super stylish coffeehouse.
Herkimer coffee is the absolute best.
Friendly baristas.
Owner is fantastic.
Need to ration myself from going so much.
I don't know what to say, except that if I could live in a coffee shop I would totally live here! they have a fireplace, amazing lighting fixtures, and a SWING chair! It's comfy and sexy and they play great music and have excellent coffee (Katie S. knows what she's talking about--the first espresso machine i ever used was a Marzocco and it rocks). The food that I've tried was super tasty-- a super rich chocolate chip cookie, and my companion (a teenager-- I was working across the street at a treatment center) said "this place rules." No diggity, no doubt.
I enjoy Muse. Although I live across town, my best friend lives across the street, so I have spent a number of afternoons drinking coffee and working on my laptop here.
The coffee is great and they have an array of snacks.
The best part, however, is the ambiance and array of seating choices.
You can sit at a private-ish table in the back, on a couch or hanging chair by the "fireplace" or at a tall table on stools (my personal fav).
With the free wifi you might find yourself hanging out here for many hours at at time
Slow as molasses. My husband has coined a phrase "weekend coffee" for places like this, where getting a latte involves a painstaking process of waiting, paying and then waiting some more, even when there is no one else in front of you... Muse coffee is like this.
But I give one star for being around the corner from my house, one star for the hanging seat and one star for the decor from Velocity. I especially love the orange planter pots on all the tables.
I have really loved being in the same neighborhood as Muse Coffee. The staff is extremely friendly, and the coffee is outstanding. I'm new to the neighborhood, and every time I walk through the door here I feel as if I've been long-time friends with everyone here. The music is always great, no canned radio here ever. The furniture and atmosphere is comfortable, and the fireplace is inviting. I love that everyone is very willing to make their favorite drink for me when I don't feel like deciding. (For a great treat sometime ask Rachel to make hers for you, it will knock your socks off!)
Thanks to Brent and the whole staff here for making our transition into this neighborhood a very pleasant experience!
Stopped in to Muse with the highest of hopes. You see Muse is a perfect distance from my condo. Far enough that the trip there and back tires out my dogs and gets me a little wake-up juice. While there I get to listen to some rockin' wake-up tunes and leave with a little cup of magic. Oh, if it were only that simple.
The coffee I have gotten has been fine but nothing for which I would go out of my way. The decor seem a little dichotomous. It can't seem to decide whether it is modern and funky or comfy and homey. The faux wood stove is nice. The swing is weird. The music really did rock. And again, my coffee was fine, though Trish really did not care for her decaf mocha.
Much of this could be growing pains. I will continue to monitor and report back.
When I can escape my home or work neighborhood, I make a beeline to Queen Anne to grab an americano at Muse Coffee. If I'm lucky, Brent will be there manning the counter, and I can shoot the breeze with him for a bit. He's such a fixture of Queen Anne. So friendly and approachable and has created the most comfortable little hang out. Free wi-fi always does it for me as I love to do work with my coffee.
I used to go here all the time when it was Holly's, which I liked, since it had a certain Queen Anne charm to it. But they managed to turn a charming neighborhood coffee shop into something that's looks like a 70's swinger's club that also serves coffee. The staff is ok; they're not downright rude, but they're also not super friendly like they used to be at Holly's.
I stopped in once to see what the hubub was all about, and it was my first bad experience, which I chalked up to them being "busy." So I gave them another try when they weren't busy and same experience. The coffee is not altogether outstanding either, so I'm sad to say that I'll never be back to Muse. Bye Holly's, it was nice to have you.
Jen C. said it best, I'd just like to add that their bagels are deliciously fresh and the men behind the counter are extra congenial.
Great atmosphere, really appreciate the local art work really makes it feel like a neighborhood coffee house. Great place to do some work with the free wi-fi connection, not too crowded on the week days always able to find a sit. Overall a great place to grab a cup joe.
Coffee is good (standard Seattle joe -- which is to say it would be a destination brew on the east coast). Average variety of eats -- scones, bagels (with do-it-yourself cream cheese), quiche, and sweet breads. The hanging chair is fun; nice art; open, bright, airy contemporary atmosphere. Very cool, friendly baristas. I live around the corner, so it's a no-brainer for me to go here on weekend mornings -- sometimes with a book (I've gotten some good reading done). I always feel very comfortable and content here, and look forward to coming. Not a destination, necessarily, but definitely stop by if you're in the 'hood.
More than just a great cup of coffee Muse has -- smart, friendly, and interesting barristas serving up a mix of beverages and treats without the 'we're just too cool for you attitude' offered frequently up and down the hill. This is a neighborhood spot where all ages show to work, chat, read, or play. Service is timely though this is not the fast food of coffee and there is no stop watch hanging over the counter.
LOVE this place. It's right around the corner from my house with great coffee and a very friendly atmosphere. They were a Godsend back in December when I was snowed in for a week!! Plus, when my niece and nephew come to visit they love to walk down there for a hot chocolate while reading the childrens books that are kept right next to the cozy fireplace. Nice touch. And a swing chair?! Doesn't get much better than this. Three cheers for Muse Coffee Company!!
Nice remodel but nothing special otherwise. Coffee was ok. Very few food options. Barista was way too chatty; sometime you just want a quick drink.
Tough crowd.
I live just 2 blocks from MUSE and have known Brent for years. I am excited to have a new place close by. After years of visiting Ladro I have been displeased with the quality of the coffee over the past 3 years. Fortunately Caffe Fiore came along to fill the void, and it is probably my favorite in town ahead of Vivace and Vita.
Out of the gate I found Muse inconsistent but with potential. It's a new crop of baristas, and you can see that in the drinks. Some good, some probably chould be dumped and repulled. They are getting better quickly. The recent switch to the new roast from Herkimer is a HUGE step forward. The post above is not a shill. The coffee is night and day different.
Is this shop all things to all people? Nope. But Brent is a great guy, and I am really excited to see him hanging his own shingle. MUSE has the advantage now that it is somewhat undiscovered which makes it a nice, quiet place to get some work done or have a meeting. I predict it will get a lot more crowded over time.
Muse is my new favorite espresso place. I love the location, and the fact that they have a great staff that is committed to pulling the perfect shot is a plus. Can't do wheat but if I did I would go for that cake that looks like a giant hostess cupcake. Thumbs up to this place, it is out of the way for some people but worth the uphill and downhill walk or vice versa.
