Love their chopped herring, but they also have a nice selection of spreads, cream cheeses, and bagels. The rugelach is great (what rugelach isn't?) and I really like that they have chai tea (iced or hot), and lemonade.

Murray's is one of those staples on Manhattan that everyone should visit at least once. Just don't do it on a weekend. Because when you're hungry and craving a bagel with a shmear, the last thing you want to do is wait on a line that stretches out the store and down the block.

Organic sesame bagel: rocks my world! delicious all on it's own. chewy on the inside and a fantastic crunch of a crust on the outside-- no toasting required!

Now, go back the next day and have it with lox and fresh slices of cucumbers and be prepared to be amazed! WOW. YUM.

    Friendly staff too!

Want a place in nyc that doesn't toast their bagels? Try MURRAYS!
Want a place that runs out of everything bagels by 1:30 on a Sunday?  Try MURRAYS!

Was seriously let down as not only the above ticked me off but the person doing your bagel also takes your coffee order instead of someone else doing it at the end of the line. This causes a bottleneck at the end and there were literally three orders at the register all confused and all of us just trying to pay while getting our orders straight.

I just don't get what they have against warming up bread instead of serving it cold.

We went to this location to pick up some bagels before we flew back to California, far, far, away from delicious New York bagels.  Compared to the Greenwich Village location, the service here was much better and the place was cleaner.  However, this could have been because it was later in the day (12-1pm-ish) on a Wednesday, instead of Sunday morning.  But I love these bagels, and I wish that New York bagels could be exported to California!

A staple of my diet!  I work in the neighborhood and I often stop in here for breakfast.  The staff are extremely friendly and have gotten to know my order.  The bagels are fresh and real, true New York bagels.  They can be a bit heavy on the cream cheese, but I don't mind that, personally.  The have a huge variety of bagel flavors and spreads, so everyone can find what they like.

As for the fact that they don't toast their bagels- I know it drives some people crazy, but the quality of the food here is so high that it doesn't matter to me.  Stop in if you're passing by- bagel fans will not regret it!

Friend told me to try Murray's Bagels, I'm not sure if she meant this one.  It wasn't too far from our hotel so we went here.

We got the Leo-lox, egg, onion on bagel $7.50 - it's pretty filling, we both finished one each.

Took about 10 min or more to get our food.

I really wanted a Novia Scotia smoked salmon w/ cream cheese on bagel - will have to try that next time if I go back to NYC.

I think you can charge it.

I must say I have some kick ass friends. One of my friends had to go back to NY this past weekend for some family shindig.....so of course what do I ask for? "Bring me back some carb-a-licious yummy bagel or pretzel...or both!"

She comes into work this morning...drops my Murray's Bagels - Chelsea bag off at my desk and states "I'm sure you've never had an authentic pumpernickel anything...so here you go!"

I couldn't wait to get this bad boy in the toaster!!! My first authentic NY bagel!! (Yes she snuck this in her baggage on the plane....No we do NOT have authentic NY style bagels here in CA.

I must say even for this bagel being one day old...having took a flight across the country...and waiting all day in my filing cabinet...it's still pretty damn good!!!

Thank you Murray's for satisfying one of my bucket list items..."Eat An Authentic NY Style Bagel"

Big, beautiful, crusty, chewy... ummm I couldnt wait for the sandwich, just got half dozen bagels and a small tub of scallion cream cheese to go.  The "healthy bagel" was yummy and stood up to my eager toaster.  I had my own norwegian smoked salmon at home, and topped off the scallion cream cheese very nicely.  You want boiled, fresh, crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside (bubbles of air trapped inside even) bagels? , can't go wrong with Murray's !

I want to like Murray's but I just can't; I have simply never had a good experience here. The service is terrible, the staff is rude, and the orders are often messed up, especially when it comes to coffee drinks. The bagels, although Murray's doesn't toast (which I absolutely hate!) are actually pretty good, so if you're willing to wait in a long line and deal with bad service, it may be worth your while. Otherwise, try Brooklyn Bagel up the street.

WOW WOW WOW I guess I love this place so much because living in Florida we do not have bagels, or deli's this amazing. On my 4 day trip to NYC staying in Chelsea I ate here two times. The bagels are amazing, and the fish is super fresh. I had a Nova sandwich both times, with capers, red onions, and tomatoes. All the toppings were good quality, and very fresh. The line system moves fairly quickly. I went in Saturday and the line was literally out the door. So I figured a place with a line this long with 1,000,000 places to eat in NYC MUST be good !

If you are looking to overdose on Carbohydrates, Honey, Murray's Bagels is for you!   Don't get me wrong, Murray's Bagels offers a vast variety of delicious bagels, cream cheeses and deli sandwiches.  But they are GIGANTIC!  I highly recommend splitting one with a friend.

My only other complaint is that Marray's Bagels does not toast your bagels.  WTF?   What kind of NYC Bagel place doesn't offer toasting?

I do not see why this place got such a good rating. Ok for a famous New York bagel Store i expected something better.
I cam here for breakfast one day and all i got was orange juice and an Onion Bagle with scallion cream cheese. For just that it was $11. The bagle was pretty burnt and the cream cheese was to thick.
I came back again, thinking it might be better and it was the same thing.  The store is really busy and they dont do toasting.
I give credit though for the store, location and variety. Over all it was ok, but I dont think i would want to come back again and spend like $10-15.

This place is great.  It was about 12 blocks from my hotel with no convenient subway lines running near it. Walking is always the best way to see the city anyway.

Bagels are hand made and tasted great.  We had breakfast sandwiches and tried a few bagels with cream cheese.   Cream cheese was very good and they stuff so much between each slice that it oozed out in big pieces.  Coffee was ok.  The only downer is there's no bathroom so I had to walk across the street to the Starbucks shop to take care of business.   I like to say I'd come back but there are so many great deli's and bakeries in NYC that I probably won't but don't let that stop you.  If your in the area definitively grab a bagel.

    Can. I. Just.

Seriously, of all my hopes and dreams and expectations of a New York City have come true with Murray's Bagels.  I asked a friend for a recommendation upon moving here for some really good bagels.  Nothing fancy, just your average with some cream cheese.  I walk in and see a glass display of every bagel you can think of. Fresh, delicious, and oh how I savored it.  I got the cinnamon raisin bagel with plain cream cheese.  I forgot to ask for it toasted as my non-NYC life before basically had that as a requirement.  I'm glad I forgot because I heard it was "rude" to ask.  And I'm glad I forgot but it DOESN'T NEED TO BE TOASTED.  It was that amazing of a bagel.

I was a little sad I missed the breakfast time just by 30 minutes, but not totally bummed because I know I will be back.  Got a pretty awesome cafe au lait to go with it and had a lovely afternoon with my scrumptious bagel and coffee.

Note, not a lot of places to sit and as it was pouring rain when I was there, I did not eat outside.  However, standing isn't that bad, it's worth it to take in the terrific aroma of this bagel place.

There are 2 bagel places around the area that were recommended: Murray's Bagels and Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company.  I honestly thought they were both very good.  One thing about Murray's is that they don't toast your bagel because they believe that their bagel is tasty as is.  It IS true. It's GOOD and the spreads and toppings that comes with it makes it absolutely superb~!

Toasted or non-toasted, I liked Murray's Bagels better... But if you like toasted bagels, you can try Brooklyn Bagel... their bagels are also delicious!

Looked promising, despite lack of clients. Guess I should have gotten a bagel and cream cheese, since you can't go wrong with that, but I stupidly ordered a roast beef sandwich. Everything in it tasted ancient; the roast beef was the lowest grade possible industrial product, basically indedible; the wilted slice of lettuce and mealy tomatoe slice each cost an extra $.50 and I had to throw them out before trying to eat it. So a $10 sandwich I ate a quarter of before throwing out. Should have tipped me off that the place was empty at lunchtime. Did gnaw on the damp sesame bagel for my minimal sustenance. Getting a simple, reasonably priced sandwich with fresh ingredients in Chelsea can be next to impossible. Depressing.

Murray's has never disappointed me.  Bagels are colossal and extremely fresh.  Cream cheeses are divine, and you must try the melt in your mouth smoked fishes which are also a specialty!

Try the walnut cream cheese on a cinnamon raison bagel for an interesting twist, it's excellent.  Veggie cream cheese is also a top pick on any kind of bagel.

I recently took some Murray's home with me for my dad's birthday and everyone is still raving about it.  Everything bagel with bit of veggie cream cheese and smoked Scottish lox was heavenly.  Make sure to add on some sliced tomato and onions to complete the experience :)

The hype machine is true, Murray's is the king of bagels in NYC.  This location isn't as packed as the 6th Ave shop but you'll still have to wait during the morning rush.  I'm a poppyseed addict and the poppyseed bagel here is the best I've had.

I order it lightly toasted with cream cheese, red onions and tomato.

    Bombdotcom!

For all you Cali kids reading this review, try ordering red onions and tomato at your local bagel shop (if you have one).  You won't find it at Panera, Au Bon Pain, Starbucks, or whatever chain you're thinking of.

You haven't had a bagel until you've had one at Murray's.

    Trust me...

Bagels are explodin' with cream cheese!

No toastin' allowed, and tons of other options in case you hate schmears.

A tad overrated, but when something is a New York staple then it deserves some respect'.

As much respect as you give a taxi driver cause he's a native New Yorker. Not much.

Lot's of attitude and not much to show for it.

You people are asking them to TOAST?  What are you, meshuggah? Where are you from?  Kansas?  Look, they're already meeting you nouveau-New Yorkers halfway, with such sacrilege as whole wheat, and tofu (tofu!) spread... but let me tell YOU somethin', buddy -- if you're criticizing them for not toasting, YOU'RE the schmoe who gets one star.  This is a New York institution - complaining about a classic bagel served a classic way is like going to Mexico and being upset that the food isn't like Taco Bell!  A bagel that needs toasting is a lousy bagel, people... and Murray's bagels are far from lousy!

Indeed, they're arguably in the running for some of the best in New York (I like 'em more than H&H, less than Bagel Hole).  They're big, they're doughy, they're perfectly boiled with a skin that's firm and flavorful without being tough.   Best of all is the amazing selection of schmears and lox -- hey, bet some of you didn't even know there was more than one kind!   They're one of the few bagel-serving delis in the city that still has classic belly lox... though some of the newer counter guys have no idea how to properly slice it.

Indeed, that's the one weakness here... the service has gone downhill over the past few years, as the staff changed and turnover increased.  Thankfully, some have stuck around and have gotten good at what they're doing, so I no longer always have to obsess over how my bagel's being assembled.  Other than that, still my bagel of choice on the west side below 34th!

Perfect for taking away your love for bagels...or breaking your jaw or a tooth. They don't toast bagels. Don't even ask, it says so on their uniform. Gold medal winners of the "Bagel Snob Awards".

Plus their kale frittata looks and tastes like plastic. Could be because when you order it, they grab they one in the display which looks like a fake one the have their just so you can see what they look like. But no, thats the ACTUAL one. They even have the nerve to ask you if you want them to heat it up. "No sir, I want a cold, stale, flavorless frittata that's been sitting in your display since you cooked it HOURS ago".  $8 in the garbage (literally, I threw it away because I couldn't eat it).

I don't know how they dare to serve such bad food. Maybe that's their thing. It's a gift.

    Not worth the carb intake.

After getting an amazing bagel at the Murray's on 6th Ave last week, I decided to give this 8th Ave location a try. There were only a few people on line, and it was 9am on a Wednesday. Most of the seats were taken. Pretty tranquil compared to the packed 6th Ave store I went to on a Saturday afternoon.

I got two sesame bagels: one with maple walnut cream cheese, and one with nothing on it, for a bagel quality-check.

Now, maybe it was a bad day, a bad batch. Maybe they got mine mixed up with the bagels they were giving to City Harvest. But compared to the bagel I got at their 6th Ave shop a few days earlier, these bagels weren't great. Better than a bodega or DD bagels, sure, but not bagel heaven. They were too hard on the outside, and just didn't seem fresh. I don't want to have to use my teeth to tear through a bagel; it should be softer. But that's just my opinion; maybe they want to make bagels with hard skins?

I'm willing to give them another shot, but when I go somewhere to pay $3.50 for a bagel (with flavored cream cheese), I need to know the quality is consistent.

The coffee and the Bagels are right up there with the best of them!

The line moves pretty fast during a Sunday morning rush (from the other side of the counter, but tourists can sometimes slow it down gawking or speaking Japanese, German or any nationality in town)

The bagels have great favors and there is a righteous selection of multi grains...they put a hefty schmeer of cheese, butter or spreads on each bagel, so watch out if your faint of heart or concerned about squeezing through the door on your way out.

Kuddos for the WiFi, good tasty coffee and no wait staff atmosphere !

"I gawt a bagel at Murray's the otha day"

I am saddened that I don't work two blocks from Murrays any longer.  I seriously crave bagels from here.  All bagels are made in house and wicked fresh even for a late lunch meal.

Last I went my experience got even better.  They have these new bagels called "flatzels" (might have messed that up) in a whole wheat everything variety!  For those of you that like a scooped out bagel, this is the way to go!  For me i always felt like a nancy asking for scooped out.

I will admit there is almost always a line and the help seems a tad disorganized.

Fantastic bagels! Have tried many of the spreads, my favorite is the jalepeno cream cheese on a whole wheat bagel. Or if I'm really hungry (or going to split with a friend) I'll get the "traditional"- lox, cream cheese, onion and capers.

If you're in a mood for sweet, try the maple raisin walnut cream cheese on a cinnamon raisin bagel.

Don't go for an egg and cheese sandwich here- not worth the very long wait! And coffee kind of sucks here. But the bagels.... amazing!!

Well Murray's, I gotta say you surprised me. I did not think I would be too crazy about you, with your lack of toasting, and your somewhat mixed yelp reviews. Yet I think you are pretty great.

And let me tell you why! First off the bagels are so fresh they really don't need to be toasted. My bagel was warm enough to melt the peanut butter that was generously smeared onto it, and it was perfectly crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. It was everything a bagel should be. I haven't eaten my huge chocolate chip cookie yet, but it looks amazing. The selection of bagels was great - a number of flavors, including several wheat varieties. And all kinds of other stuff like about 17 types of lox and one thing that was called pastrami smoked salmon whatever that is. The line is long, and it doesn't move super quickly, but the people who work there are so friendly and happy it reminded me of the midwest. Not the typical hurry hurry mentality that you often find in the city. That said, for that reason, the line does not move very quickly. Luckily I was happy to look around at all the different items they carry and the many chalkboard menus. And there is always people watching which is just great.

I must say I do find Murray's to be pretty spendy. I think my bagel with peanut butter was over $3 which is a lot. Then again in bagel shops in general pricing for peanut butter varies quite widely - sometimes it's super cheap and sometimes super expensive. It is weird. Considering how delicious my bagel was though, I didn't mind. Murray's, I will see you soon!!

I am a fan of this NYC chain.  They make very excellent bagels, but the high rating is based at least as much on the great stuff they offer to put on them:  A variety of cream cheeses from "regular" to low fat (and many with "shmears"  mixed in)  and 6 or 7 kinds of salmon from the basic Nova Scotia to Norwegian and wild Pacific varieties.  I'd love to explore the salmon varieties but the basic Nova is so good--with basic cream cheese, some Bermuda onion and capers on an onion bagel--that that is what I get every time.

This place is usually packed and getting a seat to eat in can be tough.  Get yours to go if you have somewhere to eat it.

I have to admit I love the bagels at this place.  We usually get orders catered for seminars once a month.

Unfortunately today I tried to order for myself and a few co-workers. I called the first time and was put on hold.  6 minutes later I hung up and then called back again.  Another 7 or 8 minutes on hold and I hang up again.  I called one final 3rd time and ask to not be put on hold just to get an order in.  The man on the other line stated "we are really busy so you have to hold on no matter what so don't hang up."  Ironically the call was disconnected after he "put me on hold."

Screw you Murray's I guess the time I had with your bagels will remain in my memories.
