I can't comment on the food. Frankly I can't comment on the beers. However, I will say there is a good selection of beers on tap, so that looks like it would be fun.
$7/shot for Jameson or Johnny. And frankly the bartender was very generous in his pours (more like 1.5s/closer to doubles). After 6 rounds, we decided to depart our separate ways from murphys, and head elsewhere.
As a group of guys, and being from SF, and realizing how cheap shots were - this will definitely be a stopping point for us, en route to other places.
it's got an eclectic crowd that is really diverse, and oddly enough, the bar had most of it's tables filled. not quite sure how people end up here - probably the same way we did - just as randomly. -

What better place to go for St. Patrick's Day then a place called Murphy's Pub. Lol drinks were strong, bar tenders were actually really nice here, no attitude thank god.
The only problem is security, some girl through a drink at a guy and then the guy slapped her. Security walked up and told them to leave and they said no. Security walked away like nothing happened.
Be prepared to protect yourself from flying drinks, spoken from being a partial victim lol. -

Great old downtown pub. We stopped in for a quick drink, and then on to our adventure. Good bartenders, fun and friendly vibe, just like a pub should be.

Found this gem strolling around the city. Service was fast and friendly. Patrons were cheerful and well groomed ;)
Prices were a little high, but I guess reasonable for the city. Lots of beers on draft. Open kitchen. Will stop here again. -

Chill enviornment. Cool bartenders. I haven't tried their food but it doesn't look too bad. A good mix of regular customers and out-of-towners. Some good beers on tap. It gets super crazy busy during certain holidays, St. Patricks Day for example. I went this year, it was packed, most people seemed like they endedup here because other bars/clubs were too full, and I swear they charged more for alcohol that night. All in all, I would reccomend this place for a chill after work drink or even an after shopping nightcap.
Service: 5/5
Drinks: 3/5
Ambiance: 2/5 -

Stopped in here with a few friends for lunch because it was the first thing we all could agree on. The food was just so-so but our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. I'd def come back for drinks

As far as Irish bars go, I get my fill in Boston. The one thing I can't get is Widmer's or Kona on tap. I stopped in for a beer and a bite and was pleasantly surprised. The bartender was AWESOME. The burger and fries were a cut above standard pub faire but I have to say, it was the bartender that kept me there... I will definitely be back for more.

Went for lunch and had Calamari plus the fish and chips. The calamari sauce was nice touch but was a little too oily. The fish was good. Nothing to write home about.
Problem was the service which was incredibly slow. It seemed they had only 2 waitstaff who always disappeared at the same time. The bartender could see people come in but ignored anyone who was not sitting at the counter.
Felt tempted to walk out as they would not have noticed for sure till 10 minutes after. Several people paid and left their checks on the table with their cash in there... took 5 minutes for anyone to come pick it up.
Beer was good. Mixed drink was not strong at all. -

It was a night of impromptu! I was coming home from dinner out with a friend when I got a text from my bf that some friends were meeting at Murphy's Pub for some Thursday night comedy. What? I passed by this place a million times and never stopped - they have free comedy?? I was intrigued, ok I'm in!
I don't know how long its been going on, but yeah, they have comedy on Thursdays (I don't know if it's every Thursday, check out the local comedy troupe, Nightlife on Mars).
It's downstairs in the basement, there's a stage, chairs and tables, and you can orders drinks while you laugh the night away. I had a classy mini bottle of Mumm champagne brut, and our friends had wine and beer - very cool. We had a grand time laughing it up and having a few drinks - looooved it! I will absolutely be back for comedy - maybe even next week as I see on the website that another show is scheduled for next Thursday!
They serve food, and it looked pretty decent (hamburgers, fries, hot dogs, fish, snacks) - I'll have to come back and check this out.
Only one bathroom stall for the girls (and I'm assuming also for the guys), so unfortunately there's a bit of a wait. Other than that, hey, free comedy and drinks - can't complain!Listed in: My SF 'Hood

Sometimes I just want to go somewhere uncomplicated and have a beer with a friend. Not a club, not a trendy night spot - just a bar.
That's what Murphy's is. I went with a friend on my recent trip to SF, and this was a great place to just catch up, and have a couple of drinks. The bartender was friendly and gave us a few tips on where to go for the next night. The crowd was a bit older (read: mature), which was a nice surprise.
We ordered a cheese quesadilla, and that hit the spot. I mean, it's a bar. I don't expect the food to be 5-star or anything, but it was pretty deese. -
Review from Bert K.
You would not think a pub would have very good bar food; I kid you not, try this place.
I only call it bar food cuz Murphy's is a pub; however the food quality is better than most people can make at home.
Had to try the Murphy's Burger; you get a nice 3/4 inch juicy patty, seasoned just right on a freshly grilled bun; on the side is fresh lettuce, a thin slice of red onion and a nice slice of tomato. $11.95 is reasonable for a first rate burger; the best burger under $12.00 anywhere. And you get a nice pickle to nosh.
I added a cup of their Chili and it was packed with flavor; topped with chopped onions and a bit of cheese; made by Murphy's. $3.95
I'm a fan !
Customer service: a bit slow but friendly.
I don't appreciate it when they reach across my table to hand someone some mustard :( did this twice.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Remember that time you finished your taxes early? Neither do I, and that's what Murphy's Pub is like: The burgers range from hockey puck black to boring well-done, and their collection of liquor is simply serviceable. You'll either get hammered or you won't, but it's no big deal either way.

AND A BIG BUT the second time around they made my husbands AMF (adios mother f%%%) with tequila when we specificaly said no tequila use vodka, and the server/bartender said its isnt an AMF if there isnt tequila, i bare to difere everyone likes different things she sould have kept her mouth shut and made the drink the way she was told to make it we were the paying coustmomer not her. -

We went at night and a person from my party bit into a chunk of porcelain that was in her cold slaw. When she told the waitress, the waitress said that she could give her a free drink but not comp her meal. The waitress said, "it's not like you're bleeding or anything." One of my friends talked her into comping our meal, but the waitress seemed really annoyed about us. They were really understaffed that night and you could tell the waitress was really stressed, but her attitude was unacceptable.

Wide selection of beers on tap and typical dive bar decor. Quite big in size. Bar in the front entry area and a nice restaurant area to eat in the back. The Philly cheesesteak was not impressive whatsoever though, definitely avoid if possible. And the bartender has an extreme case of BO, beware!

They pulled a great pint of Guinness here, but it is a little pricey at $6.50 per pint. The atmosphere is chill during the day and gets pretty crowded at night, but it was a nice place to have a lunchtime pint while I was visiting SF.

How I wish I worked in downtown. Miss a deadline? Hit the pub. Coworker irritating you? Hit the pub. Just thirsty for a cold one? You got it. Hit the pub.
Conveniently located in downtown, Murphy's Pub is an old school style pub that looks old and worn, which is a compliment. That's what pubs are supposed to look like.
For those of you working downtown, if you miss out closing that sale, or if work gets you down, you know what's convenient for you. -

I'd consider Murphy's Pub a perfect end of the night place after a long happy hour downtown. I wouldn't necessarily say it's the place to bring out of town guests to impress them with decor or original craft cocktails or anything like that, but it's a very comfortable spot where there are clearly lots of local regulars - a mixed crowd of professionals just looking for a place to have a beer and maybe watch a game.
After our previous stop at Rickhouse, we wanted to escape the crowd and the pricey drinks and have a change of scenery. We made our way to the back room, which isn't anything to write home about but there were plenty of empty tables and chairs on a Wednesday night. The waitress helped us right away at the beginning, though eventually I think we had to start visiting the bar to get our seconds and thirds.
Is it someplace to go out of your way to visit? No. But with good friends and a couple of drinks already in you, what more do you really need?Listed in: San Francisco Bars

What you see is what you get at this dicey Irish pub in the heart of the financial district. Prices are surprisingly decent for the area. Service is too. It's a perfect stop for a couple of quick shots and a bathroom break, in a part of town where they are guarded like fort Knox!

Murphy's is a great local bar downtown. Good for watching sports and having well priced, tasty bar food. Staff is full of "color" and you can count on having a good time here. Plenty of HD TVs inside.
Note: there is an extra room if you go behind the bar and a patio on the backside which are easy to miss. -

This is a great bar to hit up for happy hours if you work downtown. It doesn't get so overly crowded and there is actually a chance you can grab a table! There are even large tables! We always get the bar bites along with happy hour beer and end up staying until 8-9 before we head out for the night. Great place to go for that in-between work and heading out on Friday nights :) Also been here on Mondays and Tuesdays and had a great time with co-workers. The bartenders are talkative and friendly and socialize with you on weekdays when they're not too busy!

After a hard night of drinking, I stopped in to get a Bloody Mary and a little grease to coat the stomach. The Bloody Mary was excellent - perfectly spicy and lots of olives. I knew it was going to be good when she took out a huge plastic tub with the Bloody mix in it to pour in the glass. No pre-made mix here. The fish and chips were really good. It's not a huge amount, just filling a plastic basket, and everything was fried well and not soggy greasy.
Good, empathetic bartender when you have a hangover - she just said "you'll feel better soon" when delivering my Bloody and I hadn't said a word. Really enjoyed chatting with her. I can't remember her name though. My head was killing me. -

There is seating outside - in the back alley. I'm not sure if it's available all of the time, but I had lunch here with some co-workers one day.
I liked my salad with chicken. Friend got pulled pork sandwich - it looked ok, but I was glad that I didn't order that. The lemonade tasted like it was from a mix. Service was ok as well, nothing spectacular.
I will definitely come back at some point because Murphy's has that pub-like charm. -

Not too bad! I've been there just for drinks and for food and their menu is quite nice for a pub. Has a nice vibe (mature/older people) and their happy hour is pretty good too. Staff is awesome and friendly. Will come back again!

Review from Hazel K.
The only way to truly test a Pub and the strength of a Pub's bar-tending abilities is on one of the most busiest drinking holidays of the year...St. Patrick's Day. Purposely ordering and standing close to the bar most of the night I watched as each of the bartenders took about 3 different drink orders at a time, never spilling one and begging to poor more and more beers. I was amazing at the talent and still for I have never ever seen anything like this before.
There was a $20 minimum for card purchase (should of brought cash...oh well) but am not sure if this is standard or just St. Patty's procedure.
But the skill of the bar tenders alone both speed and accuracy gets a perfect score from me. And whom ever designed the place was smart enough to etch the Pub's name at eye level on the Exit Door is plain sight so no drunkard could truly miss it. So, just in case you were bar hoppin' or pub hoppin' or just plastered shizfaced out of your mind and had no clue where you were or why you were there, a cute clearly written sign says, "ELLO! YOU ARE NOW ENTERING/EXITING THE BEAUTIFUL MURPHY'S PUB! ENJOY!"
And if it wasn't for that sign, the magic of my St. Patrick's Day 2011 night would all have been a dream. -

I've been going to Murphy's for lunch for years, the food here is fantastic! My favorites dishes: Turkey Burger, best anywhere. On Friday's the Fried Chicken and Mac n Cheese is the best deal around, the chicken is juicy on the inside and crisp and not greasy on the outside. You can't eat it all in one sitting. The Tri-tip salad is also one of my summer time fav's.
The staff is great especially the Chef Julie, her assistant, and the young man who buses the tables. Murphy's is my favorite Pub in the financial district. I highly recommend it. -

This is a straight forward, kinda no thrills Irish bar, but if you find yourself walking from North Beach to BART, it is a good place to grab one for the road and/or take a leak. Good party on St. Pats as well.

Review from Chris M.
What a great local place hidden in the middle of over priced shopping areas. I saw a sign pointing to the alley while leaving the fancy wine bar where I was drinking (nice bar BTW). As soon as I went in I was dying for someone to scream "NORM" because it felt that local. I weeded through all the drafts and saw the magic potion known as Murphys. Its becoming harder to find on tap these days and is such a great beer. I didn't eat and paid and hit the alley patio. It was roughly 70 degrees out and coming from Detroit where its clearly not 70, I just wanted to relax and enjoy a beer and the day.
The bartender came out to have smoke. Beautiful girl with a great personality. She was telling me about the cost of living in San Francisco compared to New York where she' d recently moved from and I in turn told her what she could by for her 2200 a month rent in the suburbs of Detroit. If I wasn't going home very early the next morning I would have easily closed the bar. -

Last night, I saw the most amazing looking guy here, he drank his beer by himself and left. So classy, that I made a facebook status of it.
Aside from that, their fries are so good! the texture itself is addicting..slightly crunchy on the outside and the insides melt on your tongue like mashed potatoes..I think I shall re-name them mashed potato fries...(that's copyrighted peoples).
Though, the waitress wasn't too friendly. She slammed down my table's drinks and treated us like we were kids, provided we were the only ones acting like adults there. -

I recommend dropping in for bite after shopping at Union Square. 12/06/11, a friend and I finished up a night of Christmas gift buying and browsing by stopping in for dinner around 8:00 p.m. Nice old school pub atmosphere, which is generally thumbs up in my book. We walked right in and grabbed a table. They have an appetizer menu, but my friend and I weren't really in the mood for straight up bar food (fried calamari, nachos, french fries, etc.) I opted for the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and a salad. My friend got the grilled chicken sandwich and fries. My friend seemed to like her meal since after she wolfed it down she looked down at her empty plate and joked "hey, where did all my food go so fast?!" I recommend the BBQ sandwich, but be prepared for some messiness (which is generally the sign of a good BBQ sandwich...and I should know having lived in Kansas City for years). The pulled pork sandwhich was piled high with lean, juicy meat and smothered in smokey not-too-sweet BBQ sauce. For only $11 it was great. You will leave full and happy (but might need to change your shirt after in case of sauce dripping accident(s)!)
My only complaint is that we sat in the back room which is all wood walls, tables, floors, and has nothing in the decor to absorbe the sound of everyone talking, which seems to bounce off the walls. We had the misfortune to be seated by 2 tables full of people that sounded like they were screaming to talk to each other. After a while we were able to ignore the noise level and proceed with enjoying our food. Concentrating on my BBQ sandwich helped! -

Went for lunch and ordered a turkey sandwich and a Racer 5 IPA. Pretty nice beer selection, though after I asked what they had on tap, our server was quick to ask "what type of beer I like", so I only heard about the hoppier stuff.
This place is just full of secret nooks and crannies--a back "patio" that's more or less an alleyway and not trying to hard to cover it up, an additional dining area that's hidden off in the back, etc.--it certainly seems slapped together, but I won't fault it for that. Maybe that's how it is in Ireland.
Still--the food is expensive and nothing remarkable. Steak fries are nothing special, but good nonetheless. My turkey burger could have used something to give it some character--was pretty bland. $11 on its own, $1.75 for fries, and an extra $1.00 for cheese is just too much. Server wasn't very friendly. -

Let me start by saying that Irish Dives are my safe place. Also, by the time our group of 10 stumbled into Murphy's this past Saturday, it was 1:20am and we were all inebriated enough to overlook the nastiness in both the bar and the bartender's attitude.
What we were not able to overlook was the fact that she agreed to give us drinks and proceeded to make us shots for $60, which the more sober in our group claim were made with barwater. BARWATER!
I did not take one, but instead ordered cocktails which she proceeded to grab back after she decided she was closing up.
Nasty nasty nasty.Listed in: Places I love to hate

I've been working in the FiDi for a little over 6 months now and already I've had my share of "Happy Hours" at Murphy's Pub. I put the quotations because I've never actually had the chance to experience the Happy Hour prices since HH ends at 6, which is unfortunately when I usually get off work. But I still come here for the following reasons:
- It's right across the street from where I work
- There's food to go with my drinks
- It's casual and laid back
- Usually able to easily find a seat
- A number of TVs playing the games of the evening
- Prices aren't painful, especially taking into consideration the neighborhood
However, I can't give this place any higher than 3 stars for the following reasons:
- The waitresses are sloooooooooow
- The food is kind of below average, even for pub food
- TVs aren't big enough to really pay attention to the games being shown
- Did I mention Happy Hour ends at 6? Don't they know people are still working at that time?
Unfortunately, convenience wins in this case so I have every intention of coming back. Plus, Murphy's Pub holds a special place in my heart as this was where I was to witness the Giants win the World Series. -
Review from Jamie L.
3.5 rating for my Thursday visit here for lunch. We sat in the back outside patio, since there was 10 of us. The overall service was decent, even with the banter from our server who was keeping it light on the humor.
For a big group our food came fairly quickly. I ordered their Tri-Tip sandwich with salad for the side. The salad was quite tasty but it was plain. The sandwich was good in terms of how the meat was cooked but I had very little horseradish spread and it was filling but not memorable.
Altogether, I wasn't too impressed by much. I normally don't pick a bar for lunch, but my purpose was to spend time with my co-worker on her last day at the office.
