Back in the day, Murasaki was located way out in Simsbury.  A bit of a drive, but once you got there, the restaurant was cozy, the service was friendly and attentive, and the sushi was great.  Then for some reason, they decided to move to West Hartford.  The move wasn't for the better.

Murasaki's current incarnation is a tiny space that feels completely cramped, and worse, the food is just okay.  I can't say the service suffered, but since they moved, I've only been once.  For me, there's no reason to go here now.  And I used to be a huge Murasaki fan.  Things change, I guess.  Time to move on.

I went here for dinner one night and wasn't very impressed.  It's a very small and simple restaurant in West Hartford.  No frills.  I wouldn't say that the menu is anything to go crazy about either, just your basic sushi restaurant menu with Japanese staples.  We ordered a few rolls, among them were the Rainbow Roll and the Fire Roll.  Everything was just okay.

I little pricey for what it was.  The Fire roll was $15 and I've been all over for sushi and I think that tops the price list and didn't top the taste list.

I don't think I'll return.

The service didn't blow me away either, they were just nice.

I believe this is the first time I've paid $15 for a roll. They have more normal priced rolls, too, like the Philadelphia roll, was about $5.50 I think. The nigiri sushi seemed a tad on the small side. The ikura was quite sizable but somehow the seaweed seemed a bit on the soggy side. This was probably the only blemish of the evening. The decor was simple and stylish, with one wall covered with what I assume to be lacquered newspapers.

I feel silly writing a review that basically echoes Mindy S's review, but that's how I felt.  The sushi and sashimi lunch was fine.  Nothing amazing.  Just fine.  I must say, for some reason I liked their miso soup more than most, but I am not a fan, so if I liked it, I may not be the best judge!

I must compliment them as well on friendly service.

Rainbow Roll was a good pick. I ordered 2. Miso soup wasn't as salty as other places. Good presentation. Cool Wallpaper.

By far and away the best Japanese restaurant in West Hartford, CT.  Small but with a sushi bar (with seating) and an extensive menu, it is a wonderful place to go for a nice meal.  The owners are wonderful, the staff great and the food couldn't be better.  Plus an extensive Saki menu!

Just okay. Nothing special to wow us. Some of the specialty rolls were good, but expensive.

My mother is Japanese.  She was a chef at the old Rising Sun restaurant in the Hartford Civic Center. Some friends of the family have many years experience in managing and working in Japanese restaurants.   I know a thing or two about what makes a Japanese restaurant good.  I grew up eating this food.  ....my credentials.
Murasaki offers the VERY BEST food.  Number one in what I look for when I eat raw food!
The restaurant offers a very simple surrounding that actually fairly reflects traditional japanese restaurants.  It feels right.  No doubt one or two tables feel cramped, but for the most part this not a problem.  I'd say if this is a problem for you, then ask or wait for other seating or go elsewhere.  I've been in a group of six and sat comfortably.
Look, I've been to pretty much all of these restaurants, some are flashy with a metro feel, some are fun with hibachi food thrown at you, some are not so fresh and therefore, questionably dangerous.  Murasaki is what is right in Japanese restaurants.  I still try a new restaurant when they pop-up, but this is the one all of my family will always return to.
