Yummy Yummy Japanese Curry!

This is not like Indian curry....it's less spicy and a little thicker.  Try the tofu & veggie curry.  It's delicious...plus you get some fried taro chips with it.

You have to grab N go because there are only like 10 chairs to eat in here.  The line is fairly long so give yourself at least 10-15 minutes to wait in line then another 5 minutes to get your food.

Yeah, it's that good.  It's tasty, it's creamy, it's spicy (if you want it to be) and it comes with something fried!  I really love this place.  It's consistently good.  And the owners are so nice in there.  My favorite is definitely the ebi fry curry - can't really get a good fried shrimp with curry elsewhere in the city.  Their chicken katsu and pork katsu curry are pretty good too.  I have to be honest, haven't tried much else on their menu (i figure it's a curry place, so i get the curry!) but it sounds like other people come back for the other stuff (terriyaki, sushi, udon noodles).

It definitely gets crowded during the lunch hour.  My only gripe is that it's not opened later in the evening and on the weekends.  It's kind of tough on the stomach (and figure) to have curry and fried stuff midday and then sit on your butt the rest of the afternoon at work...  Hey, but it's worth it!  Maybe next time I'll get the brown rice just to be healthier...ha ha!

After reading the article in The Chronicle I ventured out to this small but incredible place.  There was no large sign advertising this place, but I found it right away due to the long line of people that had wrapped around the door outside.  I waited for 1 hour.....but IT WAS SO WORTH THE WAIT!  The curry was delicious!  Just like they make it in Japan.  I had my order with brown rice and it came with my favorite pickles as well.  The wait was long (I'm assuming there were many people like me that read the Chronicle article and came out as well today) and the place was very small, but overall they staff (all Japanese) were very friendly and moved the process along as fast as they could.  I will for sure be coming back and bringing my friends/co-workers/boyfriend with me next time!  Thank you Muracci, for a wonderful meal!!!!!

Horrible service!

Knowing this place gets packed around noon, I ran over quickly and arrived at 11:15 am.  There were 4 people ahead of me already in line.  It took them 20 minutes to take those 4 people's order.  After I ordered which was around 11:35 am, I walked over to next store and ordered for a co-worker's of mine.  I got back around 11:45 am and waited till 11:55 am.  I kept trying to ask the cashier if my order was ready, but he wouldn't help me because he was taking other people's orders.  Finally, after 15 minutes of taking other people's orders, he talked to me and i had asked if my order was ready.  He checked on my order number and said that someone already had picked up my order.  Well, how could that be??!!??  I never picked up anything.  As I stood there angry and hungry..., I looked at the clock and realized it was already 12:15 p.m.  They did not offer me any compensation for my time, but just had told me they could make another for me.  I didn't want to stand around for another 30 minutes, so i just requested for my refund and left.

Never again will I go there.  They need a better system.

I ordered the weekly special which was korokke (potato, ground beef and corn croquette) hot curry (you can choose mild, medium or hot) with brown rice (you can choose white too, if you like). I was also craving potato salad, so I ordered that too. The potato salad is mixed with brocolli and corn.

After waiting in line for an entire hour, I finally got my lunch to go. Each meal is made to order, that's why it takes so long. So I advise people to go there earlier than noon which is when i went, becuase they were sold out of the weekly special and brown rice by the time i got my food.

I tried the potato salad first which was delicious. Excellent, delicate flavor, not too strong like some potato salads.

Then I tried the korokke sans curry first. It was fried to a crisp, golden brown and was also very delicious. I added the curry and it was awesome. The hot was pretty hot and the flavor was very good. However, the only thing I didn't like about the curry was that it was remniscient of the packaged Japanese curry, "Golden Curry" brand, which is also delicious. Perhaps my tongue isn't trained well enough, but the 2 curries tasted pretty much the same, except "Golden Curry" is $1.95 or something like that, and my weekly special was $8.95.

Awesome Japanese Curry House. The place is very small so either get there early or late in the day to sit and eat. Their fried lotus root chips are pretty good. I highly recommend the Chicken Katsu Curry, best I've ever had.

I had the katsu curry spicy today.  It is the best katsu I had outside of Japan.  You might want to have the curry mild since the spicy curry kicked my ass:-) I also observed the way they make each and every order that comes in fresh, which really surprised me since they must have enormous volume and the lady makes each and every one!  They also have a perfect 100 on their health dept score.  They are not cheap, I just don't know how they could have such excellence in their products.  I think the care they take in making each one fresh explains partly why many yelpers complain about the wait.  It was extremely busy even at 11:15am, 15 mins after they open.

Muracci!!! YOU out of all places! I dislike curry almost all of my life until I've met you. After having their Chicken Katsu curry I was in a curry rampage for the whole month!

5+ stars for your curry!
-1 star for being slow
-1 star b/c you closed at 6 and don't open on the weekend

How do I even get a bite out of your curry now? It would be nice if people stop going here on the weekdays until they change their hours, but I'm afraid I don't see that happening soon.

The inconspicuous door with the tiny little "Muracci's" sign out front is not your normal door.  No, this door is one of the most famous plot devices of everybody's favorite childhood anime:  Doraemon.  I present to you the Dokodemo Door.

The front door uses an advanced technology bordering on magic to teleport you instantaneously TO Japan!  Once inside, feel free to speak the local dialect to the entirely Japanese cook staff.

This has become my favorite lunch getaway for those days when they let me out of the office.  The absolutely authentic (and delicious) curry is just beautiful.  The service, the food, the atmosphere, it's all top-notch.

The only downside is that sometimes they run out of the pork cutlet later in the day (I eat lunch at 4:00), so you might want to get there early, but do be prepared for crowds.

I hope this business succeeds.  America needs more examples of REAL Japanese food.

I've been looking for a Japanese place near my office downtown for the last 8 years I've lived in the city that had Katsu Curry and Korokke on their menu. I think my wait is now over. Yes, you have to wait in a line because people think it's yummy also. But patience, grasshopper, will reap you crunchy juicy katsu smothered with their thick curry sauce. I like their Hot curry.  It's not "thai" hot which can render your tastebuds in an inferno, but it's a beautiful sweet spice.

Muracci's is:

...Authentic & Delicious Japanese Curry! Their menu says they cook their curry over two days.
...Small and easy to miss, but worth looking for when you're craving some good Japanese food for lunch
...A bit of a wait because they make everything fresh when you order, so plan on waiting, or call ahead to order
...Tiny and doesn't have much seating so plan on taking lunch to-go
...NOT for dinner, they close at 6.
...Yummy Chicken Katsu Curry, and even better w/Veggies (which consists of broccoli & carrots), though they don't give you a ton of veggies
...White rice OR brown rice option. They also have curry udon/curry ramen!
...They have other Chicken/Beef/Salmon Teriyaki lunch combos, though their curry is pretty much a must when you go there.
...A standard order runs about $8.50ish, without any add-ons
...You can choose how spicy you want your curry

I must say that it's easy to make your own Japanese Curry at home that's almost equally tasty, but of course you can never say that's cooked over two days. Curry lovers will love Muracci's.

Dudes, I go for white rice everytime now.  Sure brown rice has it's time and place, but not in curry-rice.

Veggie curry-rice is the #1 fave, followed by the Monthly Special curry if I want to go all oink-oink style.

Drinks are super expensive here, I'm sorry I cannot patronage your $3.50 beverages.

Best Japanese Curry outside Japan!

This is one of the best places for curry hands down.  Ever since trying the Japanese chain restaurant, CoCo Ichibanya Curry House, I have been on a mission to find a good curry house in the States.  Muracci's definetly fits the bill.

This afternoon, I had the traditional beef curry with white rice.  The menu states that the curry is prepared for 2 days to bring out the flavor.  Welcome to flavor country!  The curry was not too spicy and full of taste.  The only drawback was that there could have been more beef.

When going to a curry house, I don't expect much in terms of ambiance.  However, the line snaking past the door was a little annoying.  In addition, the wait after the order was like kicking a man while he's down.  Even so, the curry was worth the wait.  If you're in a hurry, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.  Hopefully they'll find a way to control the crowds as more people eat there.

I've solved the slow problem. You just need to order the express curry and make sure all parties in your group do the same, this is the most stressful part of going here. This is the only way you can get out of here in under 10 minutes with a group of 4-5. The first time we came it took about 45 minutes to wait for all our food. This isn't cool for a lunch time place when you need to get back to work.

The food quality here is high. I would suggest to the staff that they expand the selection for the express lunch to have more than just *mild* curries. I would also like more vegetables with my chicken, it's just kind of boring now when I only get a few dices of pickled something with my chicken.

This place is good! I had the ebi fry with medium curry.  The portions are big and I was kept full all day.  They have alot of different japanese lunch plates and you get the option of white or brown rice. I wish they had more seating though. Only seating for 10 people.

Absofrickinlutely fabulous. I have a very high curry standard. I love how this a mom and pop operation . I felt like I was entering their home and their we're gracious enough to cook for me. I was impressed they offered brown rice at no extra cost. I love ogling all the goodies in their case. The curry had just the right amount of spice and kick and the portions were so generous. The lady that prepared our curry was so friendly. I told her this is the best curry I've had in a long time. And I really meant it. I can't wait to have lunch here again.

Probably the best place to get lunch at a Japanese place in the Financial District. It tends to get crowded at times so you'll be waiting for an order you placed for at least 20 minutes. Let's just say my tolerance for spiciness in food has gone up ever since i had Korean food so even the hot curry at this restaurant really isn't hot to me. Still really good though. Plus the Hamberg Steak lunch special really hit the spot in terms of lunch. It's a little bit pricey to go everyday for lunch here, but sometimes it worth taking a hit on the wallet for some quality food.

Wow! This place is excellent! I'm glad to have found this little spot that's been open only for a few months. I had the chicken katsu curry. The portion was just enough, the pickled plums and cabbage balance out the spiciness very well. I'll be back tomorrow for their spicy tofu and ground beef special!

I finally managed to sneak away from my workplace in South SF and join my boyfriend in SF's financial district to try Muracci's.  We've been looking forward to going since the first couple of yelp reviews were posted.  Now, it looks like Muracci's is quite well known.

1) The place is pretty camouflaged and unassuming.  We spent 20 minutes looking for it!  There isn't a big sign like the other nearby restos (Banana House, Murphy's Irish Pub....for example) For those that are first timers it is located closer to the corner of BUSH and Kearny than pine.  In fact, it is right next door the  Cinta Aveda Institute and has a tan/beige facade.

2) The lines can grow pretty long.

3) If you are in a hurry, order the EXPRESS curry.  The boyfriend and I ordered the Chicken Katsu curry and it took about 15 minutes.

4) For most Asians, HOT translates to eh...spicy.  It will make your nose run.

5) it is pretty cheap.  I think that the boyfriend and I spent under 20 dollars on our two chicken katsu curries.

6) The inside is small and can be stuffy.  They pack your food to go...so find a sunny spot near union square to enjoy your curry.

Overall, I was satisfied.  Yet my minor complaints:  1) the curry was too runny and 2) my mom puts potatoes, carrots and more meat into hers (who doesn't love their MOM's CURRY more??? and she didn't even pay me to type that!)

Plus, It looks like they use the S&B curry powder (my mom uses the same) and that is what really makes it taste great and easy to churn out.  I think that this is a great deal for those working downtown.  Yet, I spent $ to park and I don't think that it would be someplace to go OUT of your way to try if you aren't already in the area.

Love the homemade curry! The curry is so fresh and, the quality of the ingredients are above average. You can definitely tell by the non-existent after taste.

Muracci's packages the curry in a separate to-go container. And when you get back to the office, you can reel in excitement of pouring just the right amount of curry on your brown or white rice and tonkatsu and then drinking down the rest by itself. I was just kidding about the last part.

They have various flavors of individually packaged roll cakes that look fairly tempting too. Next time.

If I worked closer to Kearny, this place would definitely be a weekly work lunch place.

Just like my thing for Japanese girls I have a thing for Japanese Curry. CURRY!

This place is geared towards take out as the place is small.
1 table for two
3 people at the window counter
3 people at the wall counter (which would be cramped with people coming in to order)

This place is authentic as the workers begin to bust out in Japanese.  Just like my thing for Japanese girls I have a thing for Japanese Curry.  It definitely passes the test.  I wish they would carrots and potatoes in stead of having the carrot specks.  The curry has a nice spice if you ask for it spicy.  Also, they have the Seven Spices to sprinkle, I like to dump it on.  The brown rice was great with the meal at no added cost.

Chicken Katsu Curry (spicy) & Brown Rice $9.xx - Curry = Great, Katsu Breading = Great, Spicy = Great

3 Stars as the food is good, but no place to really sit.
+1 Star because there aren't very many Japanese place with this quality in the area & authentic peps..

Yep it's good!  I got the combo which includes salmon, chicken, shrimp, and veggie.  The breading is perfectly crispy, even when you're eating the cold leftovers (like I'm doing as I write this review).   I'm trying the vegetarian next time which has yummy lotus!

Only complaint is too little pickles :(  I usually go through an entire jar on my own... but too little is always better than none!

I like this curry better than Delica rf-1's and know where to go now when I need a curry fix by work. But, it was not the best, I've had....

I had the katsu curry and the pork chop was great! A lot of places deep fry their pork chops too long making it drier and tougher than leather, but they made it just right! It was juicy in the center! Hats off to fryer!

The curry came in a little cup, so your rice won't be all mushy which is a nice touch. It was a little bit weird though, I saw that they had plates, but they gave us our food in containers even when we said it was for here... odd... I'm NOT THAT down with eating outta tupperware/boxes if I don't have to...

Oh and you get a choice of brown or white rice, how cool is that? Awesome, awesome, I say!!

I'm so glad this place opened near my work! I'll agree with everyone else that the curry is amazing! It's very fresh, authentic (I'm from Hawaii so I know real Japanese food) and their chicken is all white meat. Love that they have brown rice or white rice and you can pick the level of spiciness. I haven't tried anything else because the katsu curry is so damn good but I bet their items are yummy too.

When they first opened, they were slow but they seem to have spead up in the service. If you don't want to wait, just call it in ahead and pick it up - totally saves time.

I've been here a few times now and I love this place! I tend to eat later in the day so I've never had a super long wait. I went in around 1:45 today and my lunch was ready in 5 minutes. My review might be a little skewed since I've only ordered one thing: vegetable and tofu curry with brown rice and added spinach. Yum. I've also had the green tea roll cake, which was good, but not great. I had never eaten Japanese curry before so I can't vouch for authenticity, but it sure is delicious.

4.5 stars.  I can't believe I ate the whole thing.  Twice.

My first time here, I got the delicious hot katsu curry and ate half of it there.  Back at the office half an hour later, the curry still smells good.  The katsu is still crispy.  My stomach is still full.  Yet it's all gone before I head home.

Second time here, I wasn't that hungry (rare).  Pretty much ate the whole hot beef curry without stopping.  I think I inhaled two meals' worth of food.  And thin, crispy fried lotus chips for 50 cents.

I consider this my first time having real Japanese curry.  It's far better than Delica-rfl's curry, which tastes like the store-bought roux blocks.  Muracci's beef curry was spicier than the katsu curry, because the beef has pepper on it.  The pickled vegetable accompaniments are refreshing, and you can choose brown or white rice.  Best part: they give you the curry in a separate container from the rice and fried food.

The staff is nice here.  I messed up ordering, got it changed with no probs.  Looked for hot water, found cold water pitcher in the way, guy comes out from behind the counter and moves it for me, saying it's in the wrong place.  I don't expect that from tiny, busy restaurants.

Maybe next time I'll just try ordering a side each of rice and extra sauce for portion control.  Mm... curry...

I was surprised at how different and tasty this curry was, compared to the typical brown mud (which I usually avoid) that many other Japanese restaurants sell. You can actually see the tiny pieces of carrots on this curry. I also like how they take the extra effort of serving the curry on the side, so your katsu doesn't get soggy. I ordered the pork katsu curry which was excellent, very crispy coating on the lean pork meat. I came after the lunch crowd, so I got my food in under 5 minutes. I'll definitely come back to try other menu items.

Note that the lunch sets (includes salad, appetizer and miso soup) are available all day.

I finally got to eat lunch at Muracci's.  I walked pass them almost everyday but they were too busy and I had no patience waiting.

I went into the restaurant and realized I know the people behind the counter.  The owner of the restaurant happened to be a husband and wife who I know from Japanese entrepreneur group called Seiwajyuku (started by founder of Kyosera /KDDI. www.seiwajyukuusa.com). It is a great empowering group and there is about 50 members in Northern California.

Back to the subject... So I had chance to chat with the owners and I found out:

1. The name Muracci's is named after their son's nick name.
2. They do not use flour to thicken the Curry like most Japanese style curry.  They cook down variety of vegetables to thicken the sauce.
3. They add secret broth (made with vegetables and meat) to the curry not water.
4. The fried items (shrimps and Katsu etc) are fried to order.
5. They added Sushi / Noodles to their menu since they were not sure if people would like non-Indian curry.  (She doesn't like to call her curry Japanese curry)  Now they know people appreciate their curry, that they may take other items off from their menu.
6. They care quality and freshness more than quickness

I really enjoyed their curry.  The sauce had depth in flavor.  The fried items tasted crispy outside and moist inside.  The Panko (Japanese bread crumbs) used for the Katsu were just right amount.  It was served right with Japanese style short grain rice and Fukujinzuke (finely chopped daikon, eggplant, lotus root and sometimes cucumber pickled. Traditionally suppose to contain 7 ingredients = the name comes from Shichi Fukujinn. Pickled in soy sauce sugar and Mirin.)

I love Muracci's!

I enjoy all curry, whether it's spicy Indian, coconut-y Thai, or milder and sweeter Japanese.  Even homemade wussy Chinese curry.   Muracci's curry is darn good.  I went with a friend there at 11 am to avoid the lunch rush and almost missed the place.  It's small, with no awning, but there is a giant picture of a smiling man/boy that's presumably Muracci, their son??  Not sure.

Anyway, the place is slightly bigger than what I imagined.  Because from all the yelp reviews, I thought it was gonna be just a counter and standing room for 2.  But no, my friend and I, being the first to arrive, had literally 10 seats to choose from!  I sat on the tall stool next to the window for a second then decided to settle on the 2-person small table next to the bathroom.  I love having choices!

Music is soothing, by the way.  Soft Brazilian bossa nova is somehow really Japanese and really fitting here.  The inconspicuous restaurant, the Italian-sounding name, the jazzy sound, it's all very Murakami to me.

I had the veggie and tofu curry, a little over $7 after tax.  My friend had the chicken curry.  I had mine medium hot and was perfect.  My friend thought her mild sauce was not spicy enough.  I very much loved the pickles that come with the rice.  It's crunchy and pungent and compliments so well with the rich curry and white rice.

By 11:30am, more people came but there were still a couple of seats available.  We left a little before 12 so I am not sure how crowded it gets after that.

Business-wise, I think this will work out really well.  Location on Kearny makes a lot of sense, the small space will save them money on rent, and curry and rice is such an attractive idea for busy downtown workers.  It's ideal for take outs.  You can eat it at your desk as long as you don't mind smelling like curry for the rest of the afternoon.

Hey, what the...Muracci ain't no Japanese name. I got me a Japanese name and ain't no bruddas with that name. Hmmm, sounds Italian to me. Hey paisan!...Do you put pesto in your sushi? What?....Only four types of sushi and none of them with marinara? No wonder we both lost the Big One...World War II that is.

Ethnic stereotypes aside, it does look and sound like bruddas run the place. Genki desuka, dude? I was a kid in a frickin' candy store for lunch today. What to get, what to get. Curry plates. Tonkatsu. Donburi bowls. Ramen bowls. Gee, I miss my mom (...my eye is getting moist). I went for the $7.95 Chicken Karaage Lunch Special (see my photo). Several pieces of fried chicken chunks, very tender and moist, over a bed of brown rice with a salad and a scoop of genuinely awesome potato salad with corn kernels and cucumbers. It comes with a steaming serving of miso with big tofu cubes.

You can be brave and sit at the teeny-weeny counter (see my photos) or just take it to go like any normal, anti-social worker drone in the FiDi. The wait isn't horrible...you have to understand that each order is made individually. No slabs of chicken are drying up on that grill. Looks like I'll be a regular here...better bone up on my Japanese. Maybe I can get one of those cake roil slices for free. How do you say "Buongiorno, Paisan!" in Japanese?

FOOD - 4 stars...karaage just like my mom made it (...getting teary-eyed again)
AMBIANCE- 3.5 stars...like a closet in there, but hey I ain't picky...they've only been open for six weeks, took over Kearny Pies, a place I was meaning to try...but my thighs wouldn't let me
SERVICE - 4 stars...super-friendly...maybe blood is thicker than shoyu?
TOTAL - 4 stars...can't wait to try the other stuff in the coming weeks

This place is damn good!

They are quick, delicious, AND THEIR HEALTH INSPECTION SCORE IS 100!!!

This is a no nonsense kind of joint. If you want Japanese curry, this is the ONLY place to get it in the FiDi.

hint: it got REALLY busy around 12:30, so head there early!!

Japanese curry is my favorite... unfortunately, it's not anything special here. Well it's not bad either... just needs onions/potatoes and other vegies in the curry itself. Is that a Korean thing? I don't know... it's how my mom used to make it.... jeez it sounds funny when I say that... probably because she hardly ever cooked... abandoning me all day and night... that bitch.... (just kidding i love my mommy.)

Nevertheless, I like coming here. VERY friendly shopkeepers -- always say hello, good bye, thank you, etc. Also, they offer brown rice!!! I can always appreciate a place that offers brown rice!!

This place immediately drew a crowd after it first opened, but the lines seem to have subsided a bit, thank goodness. (Seems like people are flocking to Best-O-Burger at the moment.) I still call ahead, though, and pick my order up rather than waiting in line. Oops, secret's out.

I haven't had anything other than the chicken curry, simply because it completely and utterly meets my needs. I don't know anything about Japanese curry, what it should or shouldn't taste like, but all I can say is, I like this version. The sauce is thick and complex, not too spicy (even when ordered "hot" -- then again, I like food with a kick). Love that they offer brown rice, love the pickled vegetables on the side. Friendly people, too!

Yum! Katsu Curry was great, and they even put the curry in a separate container so that the Katsu didn't  get all soggy. Don't miss the Roll Cakes, I'll be back for the snacking!

Curry is pretty good, but I've gone there a total of 5 times and they've gotten my order wrong 3 times!  This was after carefully reviewing my order (which was an order for one person, for god's sake), too.  Plus, they recently took soba noodles off the menu, so I won't be going back.

I didn't even know this was a kind of food until my colleagues brought me by here during a lunch outing.

The katsu curry is a lunchtime revelation.  Slices of pork fried and sliced over a bed of rice in one container, and one of the tastier renditions of what they call curry in the other.  I'm just going to describe it here cuz it's novel to me.  Muracci's curry is I think sweeter than I'm used to, with hints of something like cinnamon.  It's somehow lighter than an indian curry.  I like to pour my curry over the food in sections, maybe 4 or 5 pours over the course of the meal, but some people like to go all at once.  It's really a personality thing.

Muracci's is a welcome neighborhood addition.

Repeat hit.
