My house to stonestown in like 20 minutes? SURE! :)
I used to take this bus to go to the YMCA all the time. The drivers are always really friendly.
The downside is that the bus doesn't come all that often, and sometimes the time thing at the bus stop can be wrong. Usually it's right, but not always. :( And at night, the people on the bus can be a bit sketchy. -

The curve between Winston Dr and Sloat Blvd makes the 18 very slow.
Monday-Friday: 20 minutes from 8am-10pm, Saturday & Sunday: 25 minutes from 8am-10pm. This bus comes every 30 minutes between 10pm-12am every night. But the good thing is that this route also provides a transfer point to the following routes:

This bus takes me from my apartment in the Outer Sunset, to Stonestown, or to Geary to transfer to the 38. Also useful for a quick run to Safeway, right after the Great Highway on Fulton + La Playa. I like this line because it takes me to many useful places, it lacks crazies, it's not very crowded, and the bus drivers are a little more pleasant. However, it doesn't come frequently (every 20 minutes on weekdays, 25 minutes on weekends) and when it's late (which is frequently is, for what reason I am not sure - it's not like there is traffic on the route it runs!) I've waited up to 40 minutes for the 18. Not cool. So I give this line 3 stars because it's rarely on time.

The 18 is one of those bus lines that you see on the map and think, "I'll never use that one." Well, you probably won't, but if you need to get from a weird part of the Outer Sunset to the Palace of the Legion of Honor, it's a pretty efficient way to do that.
I actually rode the 18 when I was looking for a place to live five years ago. It was much more direct than any other route I could have taken, and how cool is it to ride a bus on Great Highway?
What keeps this buy from being a four-star deal is how long you often have to wait for it. Otherwise, it's pretty good all around.Listed in: Muni!

By far the most enjoyable bus ride I've ever taken. Every time I feel the need to go to the mall, I get to hop on this wonderful bus that takes me past the beach, through the Sunset, past the zoo, and on through a lovely landscape before reaching its final destination, Stonestown Galleria. Now I know this is crazy... but I actually really, really like riding this particular bus. I've never had a bad experience with it... I've never seen it crowded... It's THE bus. It pretty much rocks...
... if only it ran more frequently.... -

Things brings me back. I used to wait for this bus at 6am in the darkness just to make it to Algebra during mods 1/2/3 (2 guesses which h.s. I went to). As horrible as waking up and waiting in the cold darkness was, once I took my usual seat, I happily settled myself in for a nice long ride. This is what bus rides should all be about.
For 4 years, I rode this route from start the finish. That's 45 minutes everyday that allowed me to postpone the start of school as long as possible. And with scenes of Land's End, the Sutro Baths, Ocean Beach and Lake Merced...the long ride was and is definitely one of the better muni routes in the city. -

The 18 has the best route out of all the other lines, easy. It's a shame that they are planning on changing the route. This bus took me, without having to transfer, to my elementary school (Lafayette, when my grandmother would pick me up from school), to my middle school (Presidio) and even my high school (Mercy). Now with the help of the 5 or 31, it even takes me to my college (USF)!
However, the BIGGEST DOWNSIDE of the 18 is how off schedule the drivers can be. Also, it runs only every 20 minutes for most of the day. On Saturday morning I HAVE to take the 71 to work because the 18 simply DOES NOT ARRIVE for over an hour from 9 to 10:30am.
Still, even though the wait for the 18 can cause an artery to burst, it's my favorite line. -

Had not ridden the 18 in quite some time, until this weekend. We had hit up eibsu, then took the N out to 46th, to catch the 18 and swing up to the outer richmond to the hockey haven. the bus was on time (730-ish on a friday) and had 2 folks on it. the driver took his time once we hit lincoln, and we had a nice drive toward the water then along the great highway. I forgot that it stopped at the safeway, too.
I think there are some mechanical issues with the bio diesel buses, as this one had a hard time getting moving after it would stop. -

I'm a little bit concerned about their on-time service and their broken buses.
To give you a particular example, last Wednesday I checked NextBus about 45 minutes before I was to leave work and there was a huge gap between the next vehicle arriving shortly and one coming 60 minutes. After calling 311, they told me that THREE VEHICLES WERE OUT OF SERVICE. And it seems that they did not replace any of them or fix the schedule to reduce the problems.
The second time, I called 311 because NextBus said the next vehicle was to arrive in 40 minutes... hmmm... it's supposed to run every 20. The phone operator informed me that according to the official schedule, a vehicle was running on-time. Turned-out that the driver didn't activate the right destination of the bus, therefore it was like a ghost bus on the GPS program.Listed in: My Neighborhood - The Outer…

This was the bus I took to go to high school, college and Stonestown. What a pleasant ride. It ALWAYS comes on time and I can always get a seat.
This line is way better than the 28 or 29 Sunset because you have to take another bus to get on this line and the lines are sooo crowded! -

The 18 brings me to places no other bus can. It gives me the space I need, never being too busy for me. Sometimes you go without me, but I know you will always return. I get very lonely when you take your time. You scare me when you are with weird people, but they don't bother me.
Please don't leave me and I will be yours forever. -

IT'S BEEN CHANGED.
NO MORE PRETTY SCENIC BUS RIDES TO THE RICHMOND. That, and the times have been cut to an even more minute amount of available busses!
Sad. On the other hand, it still goes to Harding by Lake Merced - a plus for those who like to go to the lake for barbeques, crew, or dragon boat practice. -

The 18 takes FOREVER to get to Stonestown from Richmond . This bus takes me nowhere that I want or need to go . If I wanted to go to Great Highway , I would just take the 38 and walk it . If I wanted to go to Stonestown , I would take the 28 instead .

This bus is slow, and it's not the most dependable but it has some awesome drivers who - if you are a regular rider - will ask you what time your class gets out, and adjust your transfer accordingly. I'd give it 4 stars but there is a group of dumbass kids who are loud and tag up the bus on a regular basis, I mean they are ALWAYS on there (don't they have school?). One of these kids once called me a bitch because I had the audacity to close the window which was right next to my seat. Also one of these kids is morbidly obese and smells like fast food. Oh and too many stops in the sunset! Every block? C'mon now.

I don't care to ride the 71 downtown. This is nice so I don't have to walk the long, 6 blocks to the L stop. I love my old, Chinese ladies.
