6 reviews for Mugsy's
I've updated the address for Mugsy's now that they've moved into what used to be the LZ Pub. I showed up to their old location and was very confused for about a second. Luckily, it is pretty close to their original location, so no big deal.
I liked this place quite a bit. I'm not sure what the old location was like, the this is a nice little joint to meet some friends, get some drinks, and even play a few games. They have Golden T for the electronic game enthusiasts and a bunch of board games (including Clue!) available. The restrooms where clean and spacious, the bartenders were incredibly friendly and helpful, and they had a nice patio for the rare nights of great weather that we get in the summer.
The thing about Mugsy's is the parking. I really, really dislike that crazy parking lot that makes you feel like a roller coaster. And I really, really dislike valeting my car since the last few times have ended new dings on my poor baby. I opted for some street parking, but just make sure you check the parking signs.
We left somewhat early to move to another bar because our friends (the resident experts of Mugsy's) claimed that the later it gets, the more douchey it gets. I took their word for it and we left before 10. In general, I liked it and would definitely head back for a solid drink and a laid back evening.
They used to have live music here but not recently.
What I noticed the first time I went was it has that 'Warm welcoming kind of feel'.
Ideal for chilling with your mates early evening or just the two of you for a few drinks before dinner. I have also stopped by here after Dinner for a quiet chat whilst the Dessert goes down.
Cocktails are always full strength and the Bloody Mary is close to perfect.
It is tucked away off Kirby not far from some of the more popular and crowded venues but here never gets full to brimming. Varied age range and tends to be full of people who know each other but, don't worry, it is the kind of place where on your second visit people will acknowledge you and you will quickly feel like this has been your local for years.
The owner Greg will soon make you feel comfortable whether you are on your own or not.
I had no idea Mugsy's even existed and now I can't imagine my life without it. It's a cute little place tucked away between Cafe Express and Dessert Gallery over on Kirby. Parking is easy. Ordering a drink is easier. The music isn't blaring loud so you can actually hear yourself having a conversation. The regulars are friendly but not overly friendly. The only thing I'd change about it would be the type of music they play. The night I was there, someone hooked up their ipod on random and you know how that can go.
Although the bathrooms are extremely red, they are super clean which is always a sign of a great bar. The other good sign is the great selection of booze. They will make any drink you want and not complain about it - unlike any bar in midtown.
This is a great, low profile, laid back place. I will definitely be back.
This gets 5 stars not because there's anything more than it to being a neighborhood bar. But that's why it's so nice... the nice ambience, caring staff, dim-lit lights, exuding almost some sort of romance or atmosphere for pensive thinking for the locals to be swooned away by their thoughts or sympathizing neighbors.
The owners will patronize you, to keep you patronizing the bar on and on. And it shows - there were stockings for the frequent customers on the walls during Christmas time in 2007.
Every city needs something like this - a small, unknown, and classy neighborhood bar such as this one, where the customer can count on it being his or her own.
mugsys is a break from the up tight without feeling like you've left the party. the atmosphere of the bar is laid back and still feels like there's alot going on. its an atmosphere that i think is hard to find, and even harder to replicate. i've been here three times and have had a blast on all occasions. its the kind of bar you can go to if you want to talk to your friends, or meet new people, or just figure it out as you go along. most importantly, the drinks are moderately priced, and it's not too difficult to move around. recommended.
Mugsy's is a no nonsense bar with a laid-back crowd. The bartenders are great and will make new drinks for you based on your preferences. The only downside is the lack of outside seating. But, it is a perfect dark, cool haven during the hot H-town summers.
