This is the ONLY bar I go to. It's not on 6th so it doesn't ever get too crowded, and even when it is, Jay and Joe are such great bartenders I never have to wait very long for a drink.

The jukebox is awesome. At most places you won't even bother looking at the jukebox, but you must at Mugshots. There is always a good selection in it. I always hear at least one favorite song while I'm at the bar, and it's usually someone else's selection!

If you're looking to get wastey-faced on a budget, ask for a Happy Meal. It's a shot of jager and a lone star. Works every time.

I know the guys always promote Kebabelicious across the street, but my favorite food is from the truck on the corner of Trinity, Chi Lantro! Kebabelicious is good too though. They do a ticket thing where you can get a free pint of beer when you get a felafel? (Something like that.)

I haven't hit up Happy Hour on Friday in a long time, but they do burgers and pitchers for super cheap, so it's always a great HH option.

I've only been here 2 times and I loved it :) It's a very relaxed bar. The bartenders are cool and helpful. There's couches and a pool table. There's a juke box the staff puts credits on so patrons can choose songs. I wouldn't go here and stay here all night but I'd definitely go for some cheap booze to start my night off right! They have lots of beers to choose from. They also have an out door area with plenty tables and chairs.

ON THUR AND FRI THEY HAVE $4 LONESTAR PITCHERS FROM 5PM-8PM!! Go and enjoy, oh and eat a $2 cheeseburger n chips after you're buzzed and have the munchies :)

Calling a place a diamond in the rough may be a little cliche, but there really is no better way to describe Mugshots.

The staff may seem a little tough but they'll get to know you with time. Their fridge has a wide variety of beers at unpretentious prices, and their jukebox has one of the better varieties of rock and roll you'll find, with some bouncier tracks hiding out. Need to work on your bar game skills? They have a  pool table, foosball, and photo hunt.

If you're looking for draft beer you have a limited window but it's worth scheduling - Friday happy hour. From 5-8 on Fridays you can get pitchers of Texas's finest swill (Lone Star) for $4. That is not a typo.  $4. Got the happy hour munchies? Grab a $2 burger getting grilled up on the patio. Sticking around after happy hour on the first Friday of the month? They team up with Kebabalicious for Kebab-a-Keg (ask them about it).

This is what a neighborhood bar is supposed to be. Finding it a block off off Dirty 6th should be considered one of the wonders of the modern world.

    Where do I start.

1st of all this DIVE-Bar Has the worst staff I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with.
The so called OPEN-MIC MONDAY's if a farce. Chuck Miller is an arrogant extremely rude and unforgiving host. He wines and cries a river if he has to turn a knob on the house PA. He complains about everything and is very negative to anyone who dares step up to the MIC. Chuck had moved to Houston to open a bar there but, was unsuccessful. According to him he could not stand the patrons. I believe the feeling was mutual. And I heard that he was fired. The bar in Houston is still open and is fairing well. Chuck has a lil click going on @ Mugshots with 5-6 of his best buddies in tow every Monday night. If anyone ex cells at their music and or even remotely sound better than the Miller gang, the S!@#$%^&*T hits the fan. When Chuck takes to the Mic he makes plenty of mistakes with his set(which is the same set he has played for 5+years) and has no authority or enough ass to be critiquing anyone.
He claims to have sooooooooooo much experience in bands and to have had years of touring but, cannot back it up with a simple web page, an album, or even a song.
So if you are an upcoming musician who is looking to play open-mic to build your chops, this is the place to AVOID. Unless you are a glutton for punishment.
I also wanted to state that the best sets I have had have been in the street in front of Mugshots with the Austin Homeless. No pressure just pleasure.
I noticed that there are only a few ratings on the open-mic.
Chuck has scared everyone into not speaking the truth about him, open-mic and the worst Dive-Bar in Texas....
Do not even try this place.
Open-mic is a HUGE Disappointment. And I wish I could give it -10stars!
This bar is bound to stay in the dark or even close with the attitude.
They could start by removing the roof to allow Chuck's EGO IN.
If ya do go. Hock and Spit a Loogie @ Chuck for me will ya.

Why is Mugshots downtown??? It doesn't belong downtown. The atmosphere and clientele are both way too laid back and relaxed. The drinks are too cheap. The bartenders are way too friendly and unpretentious. The food (cheeseburgers, veggie burgers hot off the grill) is too unrefined, cheap, and freaking delicious. Seriously, why does Mugshots make me drive alllllllll the way downtown to enjoy one of the best dive bars in Austin???

When I was there the other night, the bartenders were cracking jokes and just downright pleasant to be around... and when I walked outside, THE PLANETS ALIGNED! NO JOKES! For some reason Kebabalicious AND Chilantro had set up shop RIGHT OUTSIDE!!!! I felt like I had died and gone to downtown heaven.

Also, they have Pavement and Johnny Cash on the jukebox. Whaaaaaaaaat!

I'll agree with almost all the reviews here - Mugshots is a diamond in the rough.

Just off of 7th, somehow this bar doesn't get packed like 6th street does on the weekend, furthermore - the people here are regulars, mainly because most people won't walk in because the place looks suspicious from the front.

Once you get in - your dollar will go far, and your tolerance better be high. The bartenders here are great, beers are cheap, they serve you quick, and if you buy liquor, they serve you STRONG. The bar itself is nice, lots of seating off to the sides, a few bar games around, pool table in a side room, as well as a patio out back. I always have a great time when I go here, and I usually never spend a lot of money.

The people who go here are laid back, and are more of the late 20's early 30's variety.

    5 stars for sure.

This place is one of those hidden gems bars downtown, near dirty 6th. At least thats what it seems to me.
The people who work here are super chill, and the crowd this place gathers is always friendly.

Their happy hour is great for an afternoon to relax with a couple of friends. $4 for a pitcher of good ole Lonestar! but wait, if you get hungry, which you will if you're drinking, they have $2 cheeseburgers and $3 burgers with chips. And its not made behind the hidden dark walls of the bar, but rather grilled and cooked right in front of you. A guy grills the burgers as you order them and just yells your name for you to pick them up. Its almost like going to a picnic at a bar.
    The drinks are always good!

Their back patio is not much when it comes to decoration, but the vibe is so nice and its hidden with trees from the mayham that is happening outside. Inside, its a bit dark with funny pictures on the wall, which is what you expect out of a dive bar. They also have a pretty sweet jukebox and a photo booth (get it?! Mugshots...)

I love San Francisco with my whole being - but sometimes...(just sometimes because New Jersey and Qatar summers have schooled me on heat) I find myself wistfully yearning for warm nights. The kind of nights - where it just makes sense to stay outside and get up to no good. The kind of nights - where looking up at the moon and stars on a dimly lit outdoor patio with good people and strangers, while you nurse a cold drink (in this case - water) just feels oh so right.

Mugshots has the warm night patio - complete with a Texas flag painted gate. It's got a vintage photo booth, a juke-box, photohunt, affordable drinks, solid bartenders,  and it's got dark musky indie feeling rooms - with just enough tude' to remind you that Mugshots packs edge.

If you're in the area  - and don't have the stamina for bustling 6th street - take a detour to Mugshots, and go snap happy in the photo-booth  - and then make sure to end your warm Austin night - outdoors.

    Trust.

Great little place dive bar downtown. $4.00 Johnny Walker Red is hard to beat.  Yes, drinks are cheap but bring cash if you can because there is a $10.00 card minimum. Which I won't fault them for, just a heads up to anyone just stopping through to get one drink.

This place is neat with several rooms and coves going on. There's a pool table with enough room to actually play! And to those of you who like photo booths you're in luck. Red7 also has one around the corner if you end up there, as well.

This is a great dive bar that is downtown, but tucked away in its own, nice little nest. It is notorious for its friendly bar staff, good beer selection, and the photobooth (hey, it's gotta earn its namesake), but the real gem lies in the back.

Down the hall, past the bathrooms, and through the back door is a fine backyard patio. It can fill up rather quickly and is somewhat noisy at times, but that's to be expected with most any bar.

If you want a good place to go with a few friends, then I recommend stopping in at Mugshot's. I've never made an entire evening out of it, but I do like to have it happily fill a good block of time in my evening.

So I finally revisited the much coveted Mugshots after 2 years and this place is even more effing awesome then I remember. I never noticed the jukebox my last visit and when I took a gander this time I almost sh*t myself. QOTSA, Rage, Deftones, Helmet, Slayer, Johnny Cash, Weezer, Dinosaur Jr, and Red Hot Chili Peppers!!!  So many great albums I can't name them all.

Needless to say my compadres and I started jumping and shouting out songs to add to the playlist and pumped like 4 dollars in the jukebox. The layout of the bar is really spacious and has nice dim lighting. The drinks here are cheap and strong too. The mix drinks were like $2.50 and most of the beers were $2 and up. The staff IS uber friendly, the crowd is always chill and it's never overly crowded inside.
They have 3 arcade games that I don't care for (golf, hunting and something else lame?). I asked why they didn't have a pinball machine but apparently they have problems with vendors that don't like to do maintenance once they buy them.

Now that I'm an Austinite this is now officially MY FAVORITE BAR!

I have fallen deeply in love with Mugshots.

    - Spectacular jukebox
    - Gracious speedy bartenders
    - Back courtyard
    - Cheapest stiff drinks in town
    - Dark roomy décor
    - Photo booth (I recommend only taking photos after a minimum of being 17 sheets to the wind, fun to find in the morning)

    Example:
There recently with friends, I purchased 4 gin and tonics, 3 beers, one gross looking fruit thing for a pal, shot of vodka (and after that probably other things, but............ who's to say) and my tab was a swoon worthy 26 including tip. HEAVEN. Fucking fantastic.

A true boozy gem in the cesspit that is downtown.

A Photobooth, jukebox, dark areas for intimate conversations...and strong but cheap drinks - what's not to love? I've been coming to Mugshots off and on since moving to Austin, and I've never had a bad experience.

They recently sponsored a Yelp event, and only further impressed me. The barstaff was excellent, I never had to wait more than few minutes for a drink...and they are very friendly/hospitable.

It's a great place for groups or for one-on-one conversing over drinks at the bar, or tucked away in one of their corner areas.

Now that I've got a near-downtown gig, I've been skipping out on my home commute on Fridays and heading to Mugshots for their Happy Hour. I've been coming here so much, they no longer need to ask for my ID at the door and the bartender even refers to me by my last name, "Mr. R." When asking anybody about Mugshots they usually allude to the friendly staff.

I come here for the Friday Happy Hour because they have pitchers of Lonestar for $4 and hamburgers for $2. It's definitely the best $2 hamburger you're going to get.

Since I've been coming to Mugshots for a while I've seen and done some awesome things. I've made out with a girl in the photo booth (and I've got photos to prove it).  If you'll check the stand-alone, tabletop machine, you'll notice a certain band name holds the top ten spots for "Erotic Photo Hunt - Babes edition." And I've seen a bum fight take place in the back alley. Things don't get much better than this.

Maybe it's the way the bartenders pour the drinks, or maybe it's the comfortable darkness of the place, but I always seem to go from 0-60 here fairly quickly and with ease (which can be either good or bad, depending on whichever way you look at it).

A few tips not previously noted:

The ladies' room does not have a mirror at all. The handicap restroom has a gigantic mirror. You've been warned.

The photobooth somehow takes the most photogenic pictures of me, EVER. It must be something about the soft focus nature of the lens. Or it's magic.

Stop in a few times, and the burly sweethearts tending bar and manning the door will remember your face. I promise.

Ok, I'm not a Yelper.  This is probably obvious.  I am one of those folks that writes reviews only when something surprises me, either good or bad.  That said, I'm trying to change.  lol.  If I was a real Yelper, I would have reviewed Mugshots years ago.

Mugshots is pretty much the only reason I go downtown anymore.  It is a neighborhood bar that just happens to be in downtown.  If you are the kind of person that is terrified by throngs of hipsters or frat boys, scantily-clad women that can't operate high heels, tiny $14 cocktails made with things like arugula, bottle service, and just obnoxious crowds in general, then this is one of the only places downtown you have left.  The bartenders here are some of the friendliest in town, but they don't suffer jerks, and I am certain this is how Mugshots is able to operate within a bubble of calm and civility only a block from 6th Street, except in the worst of times (SXSW for example, but then I will never go downtown during SXSW again, no matter how many of my out-of-town friends and family decide to use me as a free place to stay).  Yes, they do get some overflow from 6th on weekends, but it is generally the most tolerable of that element.  Go early on Friday for the $4 happy hour pitcher of Lone Star (the only time they have any beer on tap), tasty $2 burgers out back, and relax with a crowd that you can tell is almost all regulars.  The drinks are cheap, heavily poured, and the beer selection is diverse.  The bartenders are knowledgeable and patient enough to recommend different beers based on your preferences.  And that bottle of hefeweizen comes properly poured into a pint glass, with the sediment at the bottom swirled beforehand, the way it should be.  How's that for a dive bar?

    Okay listen.

    I'm 33.

When you're 33 and you're in a college town that you don't know very well, you kinda almost think about staying in instead of accidentally finding yourself surrounded by 21-year-olds.

And when you're 33, almost ALL 21-year-olds in bars are douchebags. It's like the first step to being a curmudgeon. But shoot...you may be the ADVANCED age of 33 but you're in AUSTIN! You can't just STAY IN AND ORDER ROOM SERVICE!!!!!!!

So you Yelp for something that appears to have a low douchebag quotient and HOT SPIT, you end up finding bars like Mugshots where all the nice things the other Yelpers have reported are true:

    1. NICE bartenders. Nicer than expected, actually.
    2. CHEAP drinks. Cheaper than expected, actually.
    3. Pleasant crowd. (But maybe that's just Texas for ya? I dunno.)
    4. Close proximity to delicious kebabs. (From a taco truck, even!)

    Three cheers for Mugshots!

    (BUT NOT TOO LOUD, PLEASE!)

When I visit Kevin N in Austin he takes me to places that meet a few simple requirements - cheap drinks, good jukebox and a photobooth. Well, if Mugshots photobooth had been working the night we stopped by they would have gotten 5 stars from me. Unfortunately it was out of order, which makes me sad.

I like the layout of this place - it's mysterious and dark. Plus there is a sweet patio. The beers are cheap and plentiful, they have naked lady photohunt (I play this version because the boobs don't distract me), and the bartenders were friendly. I can't believe this place wasn't more crowded, come to think about it.

Once again, Kevin has taken me to a bar I wish was located in Denver. But, at least now I know where to hang out when in Austin.

One of my favorite Austin bars. Let me tell you why:
The bartenders here are the nicest I have encountered anywhere near 6th st
    The drinks are cheap
They have an actual beer selection (bottles, but that will do)
    Photo booth
    Outside patio
    Foosball table
    Pool table
    Jukebox with damn good music
    Dim lights
    Tables
    Kebabalicious across 7th
    No college kids grinding
    Not pretentious at all
What more can you want just off 6th? The first time I was here, I walked in, grabbed a beer and sat down with my friends. There was a birthday party going on, and we were offered some Dolly Parton breast cake. One boob was strawberry, one chocolate. I indulged in a little of both - delicious.

I have never seen people scramble so much to try to make the $10 minimum on their cards.  The sad, torturous problem is their drinks are good, but so cheap.  Oh no!  This leads to everyone desperately attempting to satisfy 10 bucks, and it seems darn near impossible. This was on a Saturday night, btw.

This is the kind of place you can chat with the employees: the bartender, the door guy, all cool kids.  It's also the kind of place where you better feed the jukebox, or it goes quiet.  That's alright, because just when things might start getting sleepy, folks start poking around for any loose change for a song.  Just like them thar good ol' times.

I feel in love with mugshots on the first date.   This bar pours  great, moderately priced drinks.  Normally, I am a beer guy but they pour such a good mixed drink here that I drink the hard stuff in here.   I usually drink 7 & 7 in here and depending on the bartender it is either 3 or 3.50; can't beat that anywhere downtown.  Mixed drinks prices vary from $3 to $5. The only other place in town with drink prices like that is barfly's (funny coincidence since they have the same owners).

I'd heard stories about the cheap drinks that they served in Barfly's but somehow I got the impression that it was really a dive so I had avoided mugshots.  My mistake.   I actually like the atmosphere at Mugshots.  The walls are made out of broken stone with nice hardwood floors.  The lighting is kinda dim with candles all over the place; probably the best spot in town if you want to have a  seance (can't use accents here at yelp).  The bar is broken up in a number of different rooms so it is a nice place to hang out with a group.  Fortunately all the kids with the fake ids haven't discovered the place yet.  They seem to card everyone so maybe the kids have given up.  Nice looking pool table.  There is a patio out back.   Great selection of songs on the juke box.

Their hours are 8:00pm-2:00am; 7 days a week.   Note - that they don't open until 8:00PM.

Happy hour specials 7 days a week - $1.50 Lonestar! $2.00 Domestics! $2.50-$3.00 Imports! $2.50 Wells!  I am not actually sure what time happy hour is though.

Most bars in Austin don't really care if you ever come back but at Mugshots they make sure you come back.

Mugshots, your happy hour is the best. Cheap burgers and pitchers? Amazing! One of my friends celebrated his birthday here yesterday, and it was fantastic in so many respects. The place wasn't noisy nor crowded, the prices were cheap, and the food was delicious. I ordered three cheeseburgers, one for me and two for my boyfriend. Each came with a side of some Ruffles potato chips. Only $2 each? Sweet deal!

We sat out in the back, where the burgers were being cooked. It was like hanging out in someone's backyard; you never would've guessed we were in the middle of downtown. I complimented the guy on how great of a burger he made, and he surprised me by saying that he hadn't eaten meat in 10 years. I think I'll try the veggie burger next time.

We had several pitchers of beer and  talked amongst ourselves as the hours passed by. I was very satisfied with a quiet and relaxed bar scene here, and would definitely come back in the future. Stay cool, Mugshots.

You can get drunk here and still have enough money to blow on the photobooth, which I end up doing every time I go. I dont know if everyone knows this, but Mugshots is downtown Barfly's. I also dont know if everyone knows this, but I would give birth to Barfly's baby if I could. So I guess that means that if Barfly's were to go fight in a war, or leave town for something important, I would go sleep with Mugshots because it resembles Barfly's and is related. Somehow Im trying to tie Legends of the Fall into Mugshots and its not working...

Basically, if you go downtown you should go to Mugshots and drink, then take pictures, and drink more, and find a way home that involves not crashing your car into the kebab stand.

Mugshots is the latest bar to populate this very old building from the mid 1800s, and they haven't changed much inside.   This place is oozing character, from the thick rock walls to the very worn wood floors.   True to the name, there is a photo booth up front and headshots (not really mugshots) are tacked up all over the place.   Behind the bar are some boob shots, which were a bit more interesting.

The inside is smallish and has a bar area with a few tables and chairs and a longer side lounge, which has tables and booths.   Out back is a patio that made me feel like I was in the prison yard at Alcatraz, but I'm sure the smokers love it.   It was actually packed well before the inside had filled up.   There is a pool table in the rear of the bar.

Drinks are poured with a very heavy hand and are extremely affordable, even by 6th street standards.   Service (at the bar only) was quick and courteous.    Lots of beer and a full bar.  Juke box.   Stop in and have a drink on your way to/from 6th.

This was my favorite bar from my trip to Austin. Laid back and the drinks are dirt cheap. I got 6-8 mixed drinks and beers and only spent about 30 bucks and that was after liberal tipping.

It's quiet enough that you can chill and have a conversation but still cool enough that you can have a good time. I loved this place.

Make sure after you leave you hit up Kabobalicious across the street, it tastes like angels are dancing in your mouth. I swear.

Mugshots is a bar that I only go into when someone else suggests it, and you'd think that says negative things about it.  There, you'd be wrong.  This bar could almost be called forgettable, it's almost a cliche.  It has a short wooden bar.  It has quiet corners.  It has a perfectly serviceable pool table.  What it does not have is pretense.  No one in here is trying to be seen, it reminds me of the description of Jack Dempsey's place in the Bronx from the Godfather, "It's a nice quiet family place, everyone minds their business."  We got cold beer at cheap prices, we got great friendly service from Jay, we even got 9 free songs in their incredible jukebox.

By the way, this place gets an honorable mention in the "Top 5 Jukeboxes in Austin" list for the simple reason that they have "Full On Kevin's Mom" from Soundgarden's indie release, Louder than Love, and I found it while I was hanging out with Kevin N.  Plus, I know his mom, she rocks.

Great Great Great.  Just go there already.

    Barstaff = Great, unless you're a douchebag.

Drink Prices = Great, seriously, take our word for it.

Atmosphere = Great, unless you're into fraternity/sorority crapola or fancy schmancy loserville.

The beer selection is varied and cool, or should I say cold.  The place gets a little packed at "packed time", but hey, what doesn't?  And if it didn't, no one would bother writing about the place.

"Went to this place on Sat Night, dead, was only one there, AWESOME!!"  -  This won't cut it on http://Yelp.com.  You're mother already talked to you about this.

Go to Mugshots to watch Chicago Cubs games!!!  I understand the manager is quite the Cubs fan, and that's an A+ in my book, even if the television might fit in your glove compartment (ok, ok, it's not THAT small...  unless you own a Hummer, and then you probably won't be going to Mugshots anyway).

Thank him and the staff for the cool Juke too.  Don't forget to get your picture taken.

    See you at Mugshots!

Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum!   When you are walking around tee-totally-trashed in the vicinity of of 6th street or like us just don't know what street you are on, this is major cool.    Photo booth like in Japan is great, like in Austin!

Totally friendly staff from the door guy to the burger flipper.

When we got our bill we thought it was someone elses, as in too small.

You have now been warned and have absolutely no excuse what-so-ever for not getting jack-hammered here on the cheap before walking the really weird streets.

Broke my Mugshots cherry last weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday. We were supposed to MEET UP at 10pm. This is how I know I'm old: I took a nap so that I could hang out with everyone and have a good time, and not be cranky because I wasn't going to bed at my usual 11pm.

Got there after finding a FREE parking spot (go me!) and promptly got a drink at the bar before embarking on the search for my friends. (It was a Saturday downtown, after all.)

    "What can I getcha?"
"Can I get a Lone Star?" I ask, in a voice a little smaller and sweeter than usual, because the bartender is HOT.
"Sure." Bartender smiles, grabs a lonestar, pops the cap and hands it to me.
"Oh! Can I also get a shot of Jameson's? Sorry."
"Yeah." Pours a BIG shot. "Is that gonna be all?"
"Yes. I promise." Now blushing uncontrollably.
    "That'll be ($6-$7, I can't remember. but cheap)."
I pay, place my tip on the counter because my short arms can't reach the tip jar and venture out to the back patio, where I drink with my friends, and sweat my ass off for an hour or so before moving bars.

One of the owners was also working the bar, and I totally forgot his name. He also (co?) owns Barfly's, Bender and The Hideout Pub. He's doing a great job.

Probably not your first choice of bars downtown, but one of the best. i.e. I wouldn't make the trip to DT just to go to Mugshots, but I'm always pleased if we end up there.

Great prices, super chill atmosphere with tons of seating. I love how the bar is set up, with different little chill out rooms and a separate area for pool.

The photo booth is wonderful. They have a good jukebox. Great outdoor area.

If I have to go downtown to be social, I always suggest going to Mugshots. The beer prices are among the lowest in the 6th Street miasma, and you can drink Newcastle or Pabst tall boys and aren't judged for choosing either.  They have a couple of pool tables in the back that are a good prop for the people who need something to do other than sit and talk, and the back "patio" has that noveau prison-yard feel that will be all the rage in a couple of years.

I also like this place because it doesn't get very crowded, even on weekend nights. Which means you never have to wait for more than 2 minutes for a beer. Well, sometimes it gets very crowded, but the bar staff is excellent and work exceedingly hard to take care of you.

It's another frakking bar, with an admittedly cool photo booth thing in it. For that I desire to give Mugshots 3.5 stars, but alas, I am prevented from entering 1/2-star-granting nirvana by the Yelp powers-that-be.

Kudos to bar guy screaming at us on their p.a. at 2 to get the hell out.

Your patio smells like urine, man. I  know, it's Austin, you're near an alley, what can you do. Sandblasting?

I wasn't in a bad mood when I wrote this; I'm just telling you like it is. If a bar is going to wow me, it had better be more special than the triple-breasted whore of Eroticon 6.

My wife and I had four nights of fun in Austin. After stumbling upon Mugshots we spend the better part of two of those 4 nights there. Joe and Jay are two of the friendliest, and knowledgeable bartenders around. Take their expert recommendations on one of the many craft beers they offer.

Mugshots is a must in Austin!!!
