Review from Sean S.
Sometimes when I'm upstate I'll take a drive over to Kinderhook and visit an old friend of mine. He lives slightly outside of town on an old farm road.
During the winter this past Christmas, I went to visit him, and he took his daughter along and we went for a drive out to Hudson. It's not far, and it was a nice chance to chat and watch the snowstorm come on.
When we got to Hudson, the snow was falling pretty heavily. There weren't a lot of people on the street, so it was easy to drive right up to Muddy Cup and park the car. I went in with his daughter to grab the coffee. He snickered at his daughter proclaiming "I bet Sean won't leave the place without buying a chocolate chip cookie, you watch!"
When we went in, it was fairly quiet, with a few people around reading. It reminded me of the reading room of an old library. Very victorian living room style - even erudite.
The barrista (I don't know if they call them that in Hudson...) came over and asked what we'd like. We ordered a few coffees. I went with drip so as not to push the boundaries. Espresso tends to wear the bad flavor harder, so if I haven't set the bar high, I go with drip. And yep I did find myself grabbing a chocolate chip cookie, which was delicious if I do say so. The guy was real friendly in a small-town hipster kinda way.
We got our coffees and walked outside to find more snow, and an even quieter street.
The place reminded me of Buffalo, all those long days ago when I used to live there during University. -

The coffee and espresso drinks at the Muddy Cup are pretty good. I enjoy the Macchiato which is very strong with a chocolate chip cookie or ice cream from the freezer. The atmosphere at this coffeehouse is very unique, old school, & welcoming and it feels like you're visiting someone's old house. The front of the house is crammed comfortable chairs where customers enjoy their drinks while reading a magazine or using their laptop. The restroom still has an old bathtub, and there are 2 pay Internet terminals in the back, $2 for a half hour and $3 for one hour. Overall, a good place to relax and unwind, though it feels like the place could use some TLC and a good cleaning.
NOTE: If parking outside on the street, don't forget to feed the meter (Mon-Sat). I saw several tickets on vehicles on a Saturday afternoon. 25 cents minimum for one hour is a great deal! -

Perfectly pleasant and comfortable coffee place. Good music overhead. free Wifi. Super comfy chairs and couches. Copies of the NY Times, Post and Daily News aloud for catch up on City news. Friendly staff, good, strong coffee. Nice muffins, pastries, scones.
Tip: Walking distance to the Saturday AM farmers market. -

Muddy Cup coffee house is like a giant living room with dimmed lighting and overstuffed furniture. They seem to be more about cereal than coffee, however.
Hot chocolate was WAY too sweet and NO WAY near hot, not even warm, really. The place is just a hangout for bored college students who seem to be, for the most part, rude bordering on filthy looking; their language was certainly filthy. Many of which were, literally, laying flat out on the sofas! We tried to sit on overstuffed chairs in the back but the smell of urine coming from both bathrooms was revolting. Never again. Interesting concept for a coffee house. It's probably a better idea in a non-college town which would eliminate the hang-out/flop house/makeout sessions. The college crowd didn't seem to have purchased/ordered anything or, if they did, it was consumed many hours prior.
You can get the wifi access code from the help. -

Perhaps my affection for this place is rooted in the fact that reminds me of my favorite coffee shops in Berkeley. It made me miss home!
We stopped in here on our way through Hudson because I was falling asleep and needed a pick-me-up. The latte I had was made with good, strong espresso (hooray!), but could have been a little hotter. I was tempted by the spread of cookies at the counter, but did not purchase so I cannot comment about the baked goods.
I think the best thing about this place is the eclectic dcor and welcoming atmosphere. I like the fact that none of the comfortable antique chairs and couches matches each other. Judging from the handful of teenagers camped out in chairs reading and typing on laptops, it seems like the sort of place where you are welcome to linger. The sunshine streams in the front window in the afternoon... just a lovely place to relax and recharge. -

An excellent coffeehouse in a wonderful town in the upper Hudson River valley. Before leaving Hudson yesterday evening, C. and I stopped in for a couple of coffees and a sweet.
The coffee was solid, and the chocolate muffin C. got was more like a piece of cake! Heavenly.
The cafe has plenty of seating -- table and comfy chair -- and they've set out magazines and other materials for patrons to leaf through if you don't come with your own reading material.
Definitely the kind of place I'd frequent if I lived or worked in town!Listed in: Weekend on the Hudson

The coffee is very good and it is nice to have a comfortable place to sit down and access the web, although I can't help feeling that computers have somehow destroyed coffee shops.
My biggest gripe (and not really a big one) is that they allow some cats to roam freely and they sit on all the furniture. So if you go here before a client meeting, you end up with cat hair all over you...but most of the people we meet with have cats also, so I guess it doesn't make a difference. -

This place was yet another random Hudson discovery, while in the search for our way back to the highway. Really awesome staff, cute layout and great coffee guys! If I'm ever back in Hudson (intentionally or not), I'll be back for a latte or two.

Poughkeepsie, NY
I'm a huge Muddy Cup fan and can't wait for their Poughkeepsie location to open in April. That said, I was a smidge disappointed by the MC-Hudson location. The coffee was great, the cookies awesomely yummy, and MC-H even has some public internet access computers, but the interior decor had crossed the fine line from shabby-chic to dumpy. The "comfy" couches looked like something out of a college apartment, the windows were very dirty, and the floor looked unclean. I don't want MC to become a super-sanitized Dunkin' Donuts but this location looked like it needed a good spring cleaning. Luckily, spring is right around the corner!
