First the location, the same building as Coffee Bean. From Ocean Park Blvd., take 31st St. and turn into the first right driveway. Ever heard of the Counting Crow's song "Pay paradise put up a parking lot?"  Well, their parking lot may soon have you humming that song, as the clock's ticking. You've got 20 minutes inside to assemble the salad of your dreams.

Mrs. Winston's is the bomb. With a a staggering amount of salad bar items, a sandwich bar, a soup bar, a juice bar + a mini snack food store all in 1 stop, it's pure bliss. I gazed at all the food diversity as google eyed as a vegetarian could be. I would go as far to say it is the vegetarian, vegan salad bar nirvana. The freshness of the items  at their peak, astounding.

This establishment truly cares and is conscientious about everybody's health. Especially in this flu season, I commend them, for their cleanliness is what each restaurant ought to strive for.

Before you begin your salad bar journey, they have a contraption that I have only seen 1x before in my optometrist's office. This round bubble machine located beside the takeout salad containers, senses your hand motion as you swipe your hands, palms up underneath.  A squirt of an alcohol sanitizing gel is dispensed. This you use to rub your hands in a washing motion.  After a 30 second hand rub, your hands are now considered "disinfected."

An endless lineup of vegetable and fruit combinations, exist along with the various protein options. Watercress, purple basil, hearts of palm, figs, papaya, homemade pickles made on site, are just a few of the fresh offerings. My vegetarian eyes stared open mouthed at all their sprouts, dressings, and prepared salads.

Although my salad bar bill came to $13.00 tonight, including a cup of lentil soup, I was more than satisfied. Got my parking stub validated. Made it out the store before the 20 minute parking lot limit. I didn't even have to hum that "pay paradise, put up a parking lot" tune in my head.

Holy mother of god this salad bar is fantastic! Anything and everything you could ask for is available. Several different types of lettuce, every chopped veggie you could imagine, seeds and beans galore, 4 flavors of hummus, mixed salads (chicken, tuna, pasta, lentil), and the list goes on and on...

I finally made it here after seeing the rave reviews on yelp for the longest time...and I can confidently say this is a five star joint.  It's a little mom-n-pop health food store carrying snacks, soups and the best damn salad bar items in LA. All the ingredients are available in small portions, so you know they're fresh and not batched in a huge paint-bucket-looking-thing like Whole Foods. I didn't think anyone could beat the Whole Foods salad bar, but this place does - in variety, quality, price, ambiance and service.

There was a bit of confusion being that I went to their old location (in the marketplace behind the The Counter) first. They've moved a block down and are now located behind Coffee Bean, next to the Activision headquarters. I'm actually jealous of the Activision peeps who get to regularly partake in the awesomeness that is the Mrs. Winstons salad bar. (Although a bunch of them were there on a Sunday getting lunch - so def not envious on that front!)

OH...MY...GOD!!! I have found salad bar heaven and it is Mrs Winston's green grocery!!!!! The only strange thing about the place is that it is called a grocery...when in fact it is almost ALL salad bar with a few grocery's packed in. But, no matter, this salad bar is FANTASTIC for  veggies! Tons of different marinated tofu's, Vegan pasta salads, Fresh Veggies AND like 5 different types of hummus! PLUS, they have a sandwich bar with Vegan Chik'n salad and Vegan Tuna salad! I made myself an awesome Vegan Chik'n salad sandwich with spicy hummus, Vegan spicy southwest sauce and tons of veggies...and I was HAPPY! There are also a few varieties of hot soups and a smoothie bar, but I wasn't able to try them out, my plate was all ready far to gluttonously full!

I PRAY that Mrs. Winston decides to open a grocery closer to me...I had to trek miles and miles for it's amazingness. Just go...and eat well!

"Best salad bar in LA" is their slogan.

YES YES YES YES YES.  The salad bar is almost overwhelming...In a good way for sure.  I was in veggie heaven with such a wide selection.  Let's see...so many variations of couscous, quinoa, veggies--naked or marinated, sprouts, greens....it went on and on forever.

Next time I'm trying the juice/smoothie bar.  So I'm count me in for round #2 next time I'm in LA.

This is the only salad bar I've found to be worth going to. As a vegetarian, I spent too many years winding up stuck at restaurants where the only vegetarian option was salad. Gets old pretty fast. So it's tough to get me enthused over salad. However...

That all changed recently. I was looking for an elaborate salad bar, and after some internet searches, ended up here. (Actually, they were still in the process of moving here from further west on OPB.) I came only interested in a salad bar, and that's all this review applies to.

Having said that, let me go on to tell you about the salad bar. I've never seen anything like it. There are so many different choices, greens and pasta and vegetables and so on, condiments and dressing, and a great selection of items with tofu or TVP or whatever other vegetarian ingredient options they've come up with. There's a mock turkey salad that I can't get enough of.

The only thing is the price. Yeah, I can pack a container full enough to stuff myself at lunch time, and have enough leftovers for an afternoon snack. But that's cost me as much as $17.00. That's pretty pricey for salad, but if I exercise some self restraint, I can keep it below $13.00.

Anyway, if you're looking for healthy variety in salads, this is the place to go.

Besides having wonderful, friendly service, this place has every cool natural snack known to humanity.

And as for the  salad bar, I have been  waiting since the mid-ninetiets for a salad bar to have basil again.  This one has the purple variety as well as things like baby mustard greens with a "loaded with nutrients" sign next to them.

Pea sprouts, sprouted legumes, who has those things? Mrs. Winston's does and you can actually afford them.

They had me at dandelion greens.  And whole endive leaves.  And avocado prepared 4 ways.

I've been on a Whole Foods salad bar kick that has been eating a hole in my wallet for the past month--That is, until I finally tried Mrs Winston's salad bar this weekend (twice!).

Mrs. Winston definitely wears the "Best Salad Bar in LA" crown securely on her alfalfa/clover/onion/broccoli/fenugreek sprouted head.  With a plethora of options to choose from , this is the perfect salad bar for someone looking for a healthy yet delicious lunch.   The staff are friendly, and if you can guess the correct price on Fridays, you get your salad free!  Also, they are now open on Sundays till 5 pm.  Limited seating outside.  Go now! You'll never be bored of eating salad again.

Okay, I freaken love Mrs Winston's mainly for their phenomenal salad bar.. It's a mile long and has everything a self respecting gal or guy could ever want.

Every type of possibility is there along with speciality items like spicy tofu, avocado salad, chinese noodle salad, chocolate mousse, vegan offerings and the like.

My main problem with Mrs Winstons is that I'd like to eat there every day but my $12 salads are killing my wallet!! Well worth it once a week though.

There is also a sandwich bar, organic produce and lots of chips, crackers and pantry options to stock your desk drawers for the next "work thru lunchtime"

They've also added a juice/smoothie bar at the new location but I haven't ventured away from the salad bar long enough to sample the wares...

Ample parking although unsure if they validate... I'm fortunate enough to walk over from my office.

Yay for Mrs Winstons!! When are you going to open in NoHo????

I could eat there every day for lunch.  Such a selection of veggies and fruits and lots of all-natural sodas and juices, organic candy and health-minded snacks.

At the end of the salad bar there is the funniest little comic strip about the "Midwestern Salad Bar" with only 4 selections: Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, Pasta Salad, Ambrosia Salad.  LOl  So damned cute!

The peeps are super friendly, too.  Sweet as pie and super helpful.

Better than the Whole Foods salad bar! This salad bar is slightly more refined than the WF salad bar (which I love).  Others say the pricers are less expensive than WF but I have not noticed a very big difference. I think if the prices at WF's salad bar were a barrier to entry, I don't think Mrs. Winston is going to be much different.

Great selection and quality. Always clean and fresh items. Friendly staff. Easy parking. Not very crowded. Not a very big "grocery" section. You certainly cannot do your "grocery" shopping here, but you can certainly pick up sides for your lunch or some snacks (chips, energy bars, beverages, etc). I can't speak to the sandwiches which I have never tried.

Definitely go there if you live or work nearby and are craving a healthy, quick meal.

I am an addict of this salad bar and have been going there for years. When I first moved here from the East coast a friend told me about it as I needed my fix of healthy, fresh salad and when I went for the first time I was blown away!
I go at least once a week and the produce is fresh, well prepared and yummy. The place is family run and very clean with a lot of choices for lunch or light dinner. They also have a sandwich bar and fresh fruit, healthy snacks etc.
I highly recommend this place as the best salad bar ever!

The best salad bar I've ever been too. An insane selection of healthy items that puts other salad bars to shame. It's Whole Foods prices but 3 times the selection- 5 different kinds of sprouts, endive, artichoke hearts, feta cheese, and they serve up avocado 4 different ways. This is the mecca of salad.

Never had the salad bar.

But I buy a lot of their snacks. It's really hard to shop for healthy snacks, but this place makes it really easy. Their snacks are really flavorful, yet not fattening. I always feel like a little kid in a candy store because I want to buy one of everything. I end up spending way too much money here. The service is also excellent.

Maybe one day I'll try out the salad bar...

I absolutely love with this place--I went there every day when I worked by Ocean Park blvd.

For me, the prices weren't so bad. I could stuff the small carton with various yummy things (avocado salad...!) and it would come out to around $5-7. Considering the variety and freshness, it would have been much more expensive if I were to stock up on veggies from the grocery store (not to mention that half would probably go bad by mid-week).

I just popped in to the new Santa Monica location and I am happy to report that it is just as good as the old location, if not slightly more out of my way. The salad bar is still kickin' and the dried goods selection is still healthy and amazing. If you work in the area, skip Taco Bell and do your body a favor by taking in lunch at this delicious market.

I'm. A bit sad to be giving this place a bad review, but I have to pass on my experience here.

Up until today i'd go to Mr. Winstons every day, they have an amazing salad bar and that's what I like for lunch.  Their selection of ingredients are very fresh, and the grocery store has tons of hard to find health foods.

So why not more stars?  I like sprouts in my salad but not black ones that fell off some humans head ewwww, I have blonde hair so it wasn't mine.  I discovered my first big black hair in a salad about 2 months ago before they moved, but I figured accidents happen and I started going again.  Today I was walking out with my sandwich and there was a big black hair in it again!! :(

The owner said sorry and told me they have a perfect health record, but twice in 3 months is too much!!!!! I won't be back.

So if you want a great salad go here, but you may wind up with more then you bargained for.

So you know those funny little games at fairs or amusement parks that ask you to "Guess that Weight" and tempt you with prizes or free stuff?  Yeah, well, at Mrs. Winston's, after meticulously creating your own custom-made salad, depending on the day, you get the fun little pleasure of guessing its weight.  If correct, you get to enjoy your healthy little bundle of green glory for free!  Isn't that just peachy?!  I think so.  Be careful though because if you digress to the days of being a kid, where your eyes are bigger than your stomach, you could end up paying a whopping $15-$20 dollars for some roughage, albeit some very tasty roughage, but roughage nonetheless.  It's happened to me before, and I while wish I could say only once, that's not the case, but with every time I go, I fine-tune the art of a perfectly created salad for a satisfying price.

Mrs. Winston's is great and appeals to my affinity for keeping it local, keeping it healthy, and patronizing eateries with that small mom and pop feel.  There are a few locations around town; however, I've been to the one in Santa Monica next to the Counter the most.  There is also one in Century City, in the business district, but I believe it has limited hours around the workday.  I've met my sister there for lunch though and it was just as great.

At the salad bar, you have your choice of really great toppings, much broader than one would find at a typical salad bar, which of course I'd hope so, since salads are, their specialty.  The assortment of dressings is also nicely varied.  They offer a number of premade side salads like curried tofu, red potato salad, egg salad or pasta salad to name a few and chocolate mousse, which I'm a big fan of for a light and creamy dessert.

Directly across from the salad bar is the sandwich bar, where you can get in some stellar practice for your future career working at Subway.  I have yet to try a sandwich though, but since I'm a big fan of delis and can adeptly mimic the moves of a deli master, I bet I could piece together a winner.  In addition to the lovely salads and sandwiches that can be had at Mrs. Winston's, they also offer wholesome store goods that are usually organic, vegan, green, or just plain good for you.  After a stop into Mrs. Winston's, you'll leave with a smile, the feeling that you just did something really healthy for yourself, and with the intentions of going back for more.

Mrs. Winstons has my absolute favorite Ranch Dressing that you can only find at 2 places in all of l.a., the Marian's Lite Fresh Ranch Dressing. I have had this ranch since I was a little girl (I still refer to it as white dressing). One tiny bottle costs $4.75 but it is well worth it!!!

i would give this place a full, hearty 5 stars if it wasn't JUUUUUST a bit too expensive.  But the salad bar is just about as good as it gets, and it's next to the nicest Coffee Bean on the Westside, so it's a win-win.

Only bummer is parking if you don't have a Prius, like me, and can park at the meters for free.

BEST SALAD BAR

And, nice patio out front to enjoy their food. It is pricey, but the freshness and quality is worth it.

You gotta try it at least once to believe the variety of ingredients they offer.

Way beyond the basic crumbled egg, cucumbers, and shredded carrots of most salad bars.

I adore this place.  I think that's quite possibly the best salad bar I have ever been to. Everything is fresh, and the beets.  Man, I have never found myself obsessing over one vegetable so much.  I had the beets in my salad and then got home and wanted more!  I suppose that's a good thing cause I could be obsessing about cutting off a finger or maybe drinking poison, but instead I'm just sitting around thinking about the ways I'll arrange my vegetables and how I'll put the beets on top.

Fresh salads? Check

Good snacks? Check

Choice of beverages? Checkish, could use some more options, but fine

Friendly Staff? Check, again caveat here, just because not everyone's super friendly, but generally good

Tons of choices? Yes

Inexpensive? NO! Way more than I expected to spend on a salad, but after eating the salad, I realized I got WAY too much.

I refuse to make myself salads or sandwiches, and I have Mrs. Winston's to blame.

When I make my own salads at home I don't have everything organic- let alone: spinach, lettuce, watercress, mint, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, hearts of palm, olives stuffed with pimento, black olives, chick peas, and the best vegan Caesar salad dressing in the world.

It's hopeless. I'll have to eat at Mrs. Winston's for ever salad meal for the rest of my life.

Mrs. Winnie's is like the only or one of the only 100% green grocery store/food bar in the country(according to the owner). They use biodegradable and sustainable potato-based cutlery and food containers only. The salad bar and produce served are always high quality. The owner is picky and selects whatever is freshes and even goes out the the free-range poultry farms to check out  the other end of the spectrum before he buys the poultry for the store. No mammals are served here p.s. (I use to work across the street...thats why I know this trivia)

Onto the food:
There are as many vegan options here as there are non-vegan options here. And the vegan salads, vegan chipotle spread, and olive tapenade are delicious (great on sandwich bar-- hint hint) ! Everything is sold by weight here, so caution to the newbies. A salad can and will more often go over 12 dollars if you're not careful. The sandwich bar is really good too and a lot cheaper than the salads (even though they're the same price in weight $7.99/pound) Go figure!

The vegetarian chili is good, but it is sold same price as the salad bar, which can be expensive.

Tip: On every Friday if you can guess the price of your salad or sandwich, it's free. But you have to be exactly.

Remember to recycle, reuse, reduce...and close the loop.

There is a myriad of several types of recycling receptacles out in the shared dining area, so you can dispose of your waste accordingly.

At work, we call this place "Stinky Salad."  I guess it can smell a bit odd in there. But, surprise surprise -- it's a good place! This is a positive review!

It's often crowded at lunch, but the selection is excellent, fresh, and tasty.  Parking can be difficult as well, since the lot and tiny underground garage is often stuffed at mealtimes, but if you're willing to walk, there's metered parking all around. Stinky Salad makes it easy to eat yummy and healthy.  You can also make yourself a sandwich, and they have a wide selection of health snacks and health bars.  There are pasta salads and such available.  And there's soup (usually rice vegetable and vegetarian chili).

The crowd here is very fond of the special day (Friday, I think) when you can  guess the cost of your salad (based on weight).  If you get it right, you get it free. Of course, in the history of mankind, THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED.  It's still fun, though. .

The cost is about 10% higher than I'd like it to be, but it's really not a bad deal, especially if you stay away from the heavy and unhealthy selections -- you know, meat.

This really is the best salad bar in LA. Organic, Yes! Free-range meats, Yes! Three types of sprouts, YES! Tons of 'side' salad options , YES! (and by tons I mean like 10+)

I used to eat here all the time since I worked across the street, but now I try to stop by whenever I'm in the area. The chicken is the best, I don't know why it's so good, but it is. I put it on every salad, every time.

Watch out though, before you know it you're holding a $13 salad.

Kind of fell in love with Mrs. Winston's one day when I got lost and exited from a different door in my building on Broadway. Except for a handful of days (running to get my boss' lunch or getting lost during an errand and ending up at Koo Koo Roo) in the summer, Mrs. Winston pretty much fed me lunch the entire time I worked in that area.

Salad paradise! I have yet to find a place to rival it here in Boston. I'm not the best at eating healthy, but Mrs. Winston's definitely made it easy. The food looked so fresh (oh man, had to fight a woman for the last of the avocado once.. only to have a worker bring out a whole container of it) and tasted heavenly. The price can be a bit expensive ($10+) if you fill that plastic container up like I did.. but it was well worth it. The staff was always so nice, constantly making me laugh or filling up the salad containers or just being all around helpful. I could never guess how much my salad weighed, but it happened to others at least 4-5 times while I was in line!

And as someone who worked in a film development office.. the eavesdropping in that place was also very interesting. heh

Tossing salad, was never so delicious.

I generally don't like salads but this place has everything. You can make a salad with radish sprouts, mandarin oranges, various greens, etc... and all the ingredients are fresh. Just get there at or before lunch as fixings can get wiped out by the ocean park crowd.

Also I suggest using the sectional plastic salad container to keep your costs down. I was surprised the first time I got a salad there and it was $24. My eyes were bigger than my stomach.

If salad is not your thing you can also make sandwiches too. But with the salad on Fridays you can guess its price and if your right its free! Just don't get your hopes up, harder than it looks.

There is parking in the rear and not open late or Sundays. Best salad place in my opinion.

Mmmmmm salad. The multitude of ingredients available is pretty cool, vegetables that you only read about in health magazines are readily available. Tomatoes of various colors,  fresh everything, and really good dressings. All sorts of alternative options are available as well, flaxseed oil, liquid amino, etc.  The snozzberries taste like snozzberries!

It can get kind of spendy though, a giant box of salad greens will end up costing 20 bucks if you're not careful with the heavy stuff. Great natural drinks selection too. Fantastic place!

Bonus, on fridays, if you guess the dollar amount of your salad, it's free! (although, i have yet to see it happen)

Amazing. This place actually puts Whole Foods to shame. Their salad bar is loaded with a wide array of ultra fresh veggies-- spinach, red chard, kale, romaine, hearts of palm, heirloom tomatoes (!!1), like 5 different kinds of sprouts, etc. Lots of vegan-friendly deli salads as well (sold by weight), which were fantastic. I had the vegan tabouli, tomato/avocado salad, curried tofu, quinoa with olives, peanut tofu. The entire box set me back about $7 which is not cheap but probably one of the best salads I've ever had. Super high quality, really fresh, wonderful.

They also have a SANDWICH bar, soups, a small fresh produce aisle, bread/rolls, vitamins/supplements, a HUGE selection of vegan bars and cookies, and other delightful shit that you can only find at a crunchy new age-y health food store.

I loved it here. A new haunt for me to spend too much money at, in between classes. Parking's not too difficult. There's a parking structure SOMEWHERE, but I was able to find a metered spot right out front.

So it's closer to my desk now and i'm a fan. This location has moved to 3000 Ocean Park Blvd next to the Coffee bean. They have a full smoothie bar and have a cool new layout. They are on the south side of the street on 31st and OP.

Looks like a simple salad bar/organic grocery place... but my friend couldn't take her eyes off the place as soon as she found out that it was in the plaza we happened to be in.

She just kept saying.. they have the BEST sandwiches.. they have the BEST sandwiches..

so we walk in.. and i'm looking for the sandwiches.. and I just see salad.. and more salad and shelves of boxes with the word SOY everywhere..
It's a VEGANs paradise.

She swears by the vegan chipotle sauce/spread but because the bottle was about empty... and I wasn't too impressed with the place.. we didn't get anything and left..

But my some cosmic power.. we ended up at the plaza the next day and again our plans were shot and she said.. hey let's at least we can get a sandwich...

so besides the chipotle sauce.. she loves the rosemary bread..

and I was a bit lost because I STILL could not see the sandwiches.. and I was as she meticulously builds this beautiful sandwich..

rosemary bread
a swirl of chipotle sauce
pile of turkey
fresh piece of red leaf lettuce
roasted peppers
slice of provolone
close it up with rosemary bread
-- slices of fresh mozzarella on the side to nibble on

As much as I wasn't feeling the place.. I had to join in and build one for myself.

Rather than the roasted peppers I had some alfalfa sprouts and roma tomatoes

You can be so creative with your sandwich it's great!

But I did just think.. it's just a sandwich.. I could make this at home.

You pay for your sandwich by it's weight mine came out to $3.99.  I guess it's something like $6.65/lb.
Average.. not too bad..

BUT... when I bit into the bread it was so wonderful.
You could really taste every flavor in the sandwich.. The sauce, the rosemary bread, the freshness of the veggies.. it was delicious.

I had a smaller sized sandwich because the only pieces left were the ends of the roll and even before leaving I wanted to go back and get more...

I can't wait to go back to the plaza for no reason again.. so I can just happen to pop back in and check the little bread box to see if they have more of the bread...

EXCELLENT..

oh.. the cashier is great too, very helpful and nice.. I didn't feel like I was in some snooty organic place, it was very comfortable once I understood what was going on.

I used to work down the street from this place and ate there at least once a week. Yes, it does get pricey but is affordable when compared to just about any place else in the area.

They have a huge assortment of toppings to choose from for your salad. I prefer a sandwich because you can add a lot of meat without adding too much to the price since the cost is proportional to weight.

Highly recommended.

I don't love their prices but it's hard to argue with the quality of their salad bar and even most of their other products. They have signs claiming to have the "Best salad bar in Los Angeles" and I was highly skeptical at first but I really can't argue after trying it out 3 or 4 times. They certainly offer one of the most extensive selections of salad bar items and I've never seen anything looking less than perfectly fresh and clean. I especially like the diced turkey which has an impressive level of smokiness to it that reminds me of Tyler, Texas smoked meats. I highly recommend this place to anyone willing to wait in line for five or ten minutes to put together their own lunch that may end up costing between $8 and $20+.
