Thank you to my sister and fellow co-worker for mentioning and suggesting this gem of a restaurant.  Tucked away on 8th street I would never have imagined a great asian restaurant like this to be.  Walking in the place is nicely decorated, with a sushi bar, a big screen TV on the wall, plenty of tables, super friendly staff, and delicious food.

Oh, and the manager looked like he stepped out of a dragonball Z episode.  Instead of delivering a finish blow of pure energy he delivered excellent service instead!.  You'd have to see him to know what I mean.  Quite an interesting hair style.

Anyways, food was delicious.  The decor had an interesting stylish look to it.  Staff was friendly, and most importantly the prices were reasonable.  I shall make a return appearance very soon.  Do not miss out on this place!

So finally after a few recommendations from friends I decided to give this place a try. I gotta say that the location does not help, but the actual place is very nice once you forget you are right on Calle Ocho.

Our server was very friendly and the decor is quite nice.

I must say though that the food was not impressive, it wasn't bad, it was just average. The Pineapple Fried Rice was an exception, nice dish.

I found it to be rather steep, the rolls are small, bottom line is too much money and too little food.

Not looking forward to visit this place in the future

Thanks, Yelp...you helped me choose a great place for my birthday lunch! This place is absolutely invisible if you don't know what you are looking for.

Free Miso soup after we sat down. My son ate it up! It had cooked celery in it, which I had never seen before. He ate it. Thank you!!

Just a super pleasant experience. The manager looking guy with the mohawk...you know who I'm talking about! The waitress...everyone so nice to us and our little guy.

Basically, my son had the meal of his life, which means he ate tons and was super calm. Translation: I could enjoy my meal!

My husband ordered a lunch special that included sashimi, sushi, and beef teriyaki all for a great price.

Frankly, the veggie sushi rolls I ordered where a little plain, and the salad with ginger dressing was not your typical. It was good, but not what I was craving. I would probably order differently next time, but I'll be back.

Get the Thai Donuts. YUM!

Been to Mr. Yum's twice and it's always a pleasure!
Their house Miso soup must have cocaine in it because it is delectable and you can't get enough! The Pineapple fried rice is a MUST-ORDER, the thai steak salad is amazing, and  their selection of sushi is ready to appease any palate upon demand!

For dessert I've have both the "import" japanese Ice cream which is a rare find in Miami (they serve Leechy and Green Tea among other flavors), and the deep fried icecream is also very delicious! (see pics)

As a downtown Miami resident, I'm so glad I have Mr. Yum!

Came back around 11pm on a Saturday night and this place cemented their reputation with me.

Our server was so enthusiastic it almost pained me that we didn't have that same passion. However, his energy was endearing and he was polite and caring and that is always a nice experience.

I was a little under the weather so I requested the hangover soup and it did a body good. If they made some sort of chicken soup it would be a local cure all.

The private-ish table seems like it would be good for a larger party and I'm looking forward to a bigger meal here with more friends.

I just wish they would turn the music down. I get it the vibe is cool at this spot but nothing is cooler than subtlety and music in a restaurant isn't the draw and should not take away from the experience. If you have to wait for breaks in the music to converse than something is off.

FINALLY got to go to Mr. Yum a few weeks back after hearing soooooooo much about the place. I have to say, I was plesantly surprised, not disappointed at all despite how everyone played it up...

Went on a Thursday night for girls' night out... when we got there at around 9pm, we did have to wait to be seated, but only about 5 minutes or so. Service was great... received our menus right away and the server was ready to take our order as soon as we decided. We had a bottle of wine and each of us ordered a roll; most of us chose the Dragon Roll. One friend went against the crowd and chose the Calle Ocho roll (I think that's what it's called) and I also heard great reviews. The decision was to then order a few other plates to share (believe we chose the thai noodles and a vegetable plate). Both were excellent as were the rolls.

Loved it, loved the place, loved the ambience, and will definitely return...

Awesome, chic little restaurant that was a great find during our trip to miami.

Let me just preface this by saying my boyfriend and I, we like sushi  A LOT. This is probably an understatement actually, so, when we go out, we order about 2-3 rolls each.

we ordered:

daimyomaki - Tuna and yellowfish - VERY fresh
dynamite - seafood roll
mr yum's - tuna-type roll on bed of seaweed - My favorite of the evening
bond roll - seafood and tempura with wasabi sauce - a recommendation of the waiter, didn't disappoint
volcano - excellent, nice and hot, like a good volcano should be.

we also had ordered a havana roll, without cucumber. But, it came out with cucumber so we had to send it back. Our waiter forgot about it so we never got another one. we had enough sushi already so it wasnt a big deal.

also ordered:
chocolate bom - boyfriend loved it
tempura ice cream - everything tastes better with tempura, although the ice cream was a bit too icey in the middle

I am also a fan of the rampant Ikea hacking in this restaurant.

The only bad thing I can say is that the service was way spotty. We waited a looonnng time for the waiter to come get our check, and he did forget about the cucumber thing and to bring back a new roll. He also was really pushy about suggestions. My boyfriend hadn't even finished ordering his meal when the waiter pounced, "wait wait wait!! can I suggest something else!!" I think that is rude, although maybe that is just a miami thing? Well whatever the case, it wouldn't bar me from recommending that you check this place out, it's a very fun sushi spot!

YUMMY YUMMY SUSHI @ MR. YUM!!!

MY FAVS (so far)
Calle Ocho appetizer
Tom Kai soup
Bagel roll (i get this everywhere and it was very good here)

WARNING
-small restaurant so make reservations if going on a weekend
-park at the parking lot right next to it (i missed it and parked at a meter)

OVERALL REVIEW
This place is adorable - very trendy inside, does not look like a restaurant in little Havana. The menu is great, both for sushi and thai. It is definitely worth checking out. I went with 2 friends and we ordered enough food for 5 - no complaints on any of the sushi. The rolls are bite sized, just the way I like them. I will be back to try the thai food.

Sushi was well prepared with some creative options (spicy tuna with apple, plantain covered shrimp tempura). Attentively plated and presented. Thai noodle dishes delicious as well.

The place is chic and was extremely busy on a Friday evening. Service was reasonably attentive despite the crowd. Extremely loud inside and somewhat pricy.

Loved. it.

With a name like Mr. Yum, you bet your bottom dollar I was expecting some yummy food. And I was not disappointed.

First off, the joint is adorable. An Ikea-meets-Phillipe Starck concoction of sorts, the resto is tres cute. From the kitchsy wallpaper to the fresh-cut rose center pieces to the black lacquer light fixtures, every nook and cranny of Mr. Yum pays keen attention to design detail. On Calle Ocho this is an enigma of sorts, but hey, times are changing.

The food was fab. We loved the shrimp shumai, mango fried rice, pad thai, house soup, sea food noodles and vegetable spring rolls, honestly, every item was solid. My gal pals loved the lychee martinis, too.

Be sure to save room for dessert. The Thai donuts are delish. Tempura Twinkies are also on the menu, but we passed. I'm still wishing we hadn't.

If you want something new, fresh and cool, go here. It's like unearthing a diamond in the rough in terms of its location on scrappy Eighth Street.

WOW! Just for the fact that it is a place on Calle Ocho that I would actually go specifically to eat makes it a hit already. Trust me. This was a real treat along a tired row of varied eateries that I really want to give a try but seem to have left my adventurous streak and capacity for menu surprises behind in Africa.

Really chic atmosphere and nice menu choices. I had the veggie and shrimp tempura which was on point. My sis had the pad thai which I honestly had a better plate at Indochine up the road. We split a Havana Roll which was fresh and slightly warm from the tempura fish. Nice.  I order the mixed fried rice takeaway for a friend and she loved it.

Come early because I can see the place getting full in a hurry. Mr. Yum will make me change my mind about attempting Viernes Culturales again..

I love Mr. Yum. Their Dragon roll is amazingly good. Bond's hair is an attraction too! Yeah, the location is nothing special, it's small and you have a view of busy Calle Ocho.

It would have been nice to have this a little closer to downtown/brickell but prices probably would have been a lot higher if that was the case.

I have to say that I've had mixed service here. Sometimes very good and sometimes kind of cold. If you go, don't forget to try out the dragon roll. I love the soup here too.

During my last visit for lunch, Bond informed us that they had some problems with the gas and therefore they had nothing "cooked" available. i.e. nothing tempura, nothing thai, etc.

I had three Mr. Yum newbies with me and they definitely didn't have a good experience, which is too bad since this was just an anomaly.

Overall, I highly recommend Mr. Yum.

My expectations were low honestly... come on, uber posh thai/sushi combo (i'm super skeptical of restaurants that combine thai/vietnamese/sushi/chinese whatever) in the middle of calle ocho. I thought this would be the frontlines of proto-gentrification.

Well it is probably, or hopefully not, but the food is good too. The fish was the freshest sushi I have had in Miami, and actually probably up there in terms of cities i've lived and visited. It is pricier than I usually afford, but the quality is there too. I had the sashimi combo which was a decent quantity of fish, and like protein jello as it should be!

I also ordered drunken noodles which were again surprisingly delicious. They were properly spiced with the right amount of fish sauce, oyster sauce, dark soy sauce, etc. The sushi was better sushi than the noodles were good thai, but still quite excellent (especially for miami thai food).

The tea was also damn good. This was a surprise because bagged tea sucked. Hate to shatter that menagerie or whatever, but it does. It's bagged for a reason. But they had chi chi silk bags with quality japanese tea (maybe sencha or something I can't remember).

I would recommend this place if you can tolerate the weird heart-shaped "furniture concepts" and art, and stiff waiters being watched by weird overly watchful management. But alas that is schmancy dining in miami.

This place delivers the best sushi and sashimi in Miami.  Lunch comes with soup that I wish I could have every day.  Love the iced green tea, perfect summer time refresher!
I truly admire when a small business owner has a passion for their business, and this is certainly a diamond in the rough.  Hard to find such a place, particularly in Miami!!
Start with any of the Japanese lunch combos, and you'll be back, for sure!!!!!

I just ate here for the first time tonight and I loved it!

The fried calamari was paired with an incredible sauce that had the perfect amount of spice (and it was gone before the calamari was!) We also tried a great new roll which, for the neighborhood, was perfectly named the "Ño Roll" (short for coño). It consisted of a dragon roll topped with plantains instead of avacado, and covered in a delicious mango sauce.

I was really happy to find a hip little restaurant like Mr. Yum without the hype of having to trek out to Downtown or South Beach.

Overall, the curry was incredibly, the decor adorable, and the waitress attentive, informative, and super nice. Between the delicious food and the complimentary sake I also received, this is a new favorite of mine!

It's kind of weird to be driving down Calle Ocho and see a restaurant that looks like it belongs on South Beach or the Design District. Mr. Yum looks totally out of place, so at least you'll know you've found it.

Like Robert C., I received some pretty terrible service. We only ordered two rolls and edamame, and the dining experience was 45 minutes longer than it should have been.

Big pet peeve - what's up with the rationing of soy sauce? After requesting the soy sauce, they brought us two tiny little bowls with the sauce already in it.  No bottle. As predicted, it was annoying to have to call the waitress over to "refill" the little bowls.

In trying to understand, I discovered that it was actually really magically delicious. Maybe that's why they're rationing it. But if they really wanted to do that, at least serve it in tiny little bottles to at least create the ILLUSION that you're not rationing it out.

I'd also like to add that we did not receive any complimentary soup as some of the reviews show here. I don't know if that is a lunch thing or what.

Aside from this, the menu items looked really appealing and the sushi itself was very "yum" (sorry, I had to). I also liked the fact that it was open past 11 in the middle of the week.

Just PLEASE improve the service and make me believe you aren't keeping your soy sauce stash away from me. I swear, I won't abuse it.

We Cubans have a saying..."bueno barato y bonito" (good, cheap & pretty) Mr Yum's is all this and more.
Last night when wondering where we were going to eat t, I decided to seek advice from my fellow foodie and twitter friend @ergagit. Luckily he suggested Mr Yum, and although I had been there before, sometimes you forget about places (not because they are bad, but because there are so many places to eat in Miami).
Gagit is well connected and I'm a fledgling foodie, so of course I named dropped when we arrived and Bonn (the coolest guy with the coolest faux hawk) immediately took care of us.
Luckily we were served by Josh that besides being very cute, is a very good waiter as well.
Gagit had tweeted me to try the "Calle Ocho" tuna and the masaman curry or pad Thai. Well, my friends, the calle ocho tuna (chop tuna with spicy mayo rice avocado and eel sauce) was out of this world..
For dinner I had the Beef Masaman Curry Thai (very rich curry with coconut milk, cashew nuts, potatoes, onions and avocado) and it was delightful. All my friends raved about the curry when I let them taste (albeit, a very small piece) it was too good to share all of it.
I did taste my partner's pad Thai and it was very good as well.
For dessert we had the ever popular (and probably cliche) Thai donuts...but I'm Cuban and I love leche condensada!!
BTW, almost forgot, who would ever have expected that an Asian fusion restaurant in the heart of little Havana would be doing so well, I mean it was packed last night (again, thanks Gagit for the hook up) and It was filled by young beautiful men and women, Miami's elite.

I went to Mr Yum on Friday and was so pleasantly surprised. I hadn't heard of it but a girlfriend suggested we go, the yelp comments were very encouraging. The location is definitely very random but that's part of what makes it special. Its nice to have a great meal and see a place crowded with interesting people somewhere besides the beach.

Its very small inside, but again, i like that about it. The decor is cute. They dontt take reservations so we got there at around 7:30pm on Friday which was good because about 30 minutes later it got packed. We had the gyoza, very good, hamachi, good, one of the rolls which i cant remember but it was good, a little heavy on the rice to fish ratio, two soups, good, the pad thai, very good and the masaman curry which was amazing! It was very rich but unbelievably creamy and just goodness. I could eat that everyday!

We also had the mochee ice cream which is one of my favorite things, they had 5 flavors and all were yummy. There were four of us, we obviously ordered a lot of food, two bottles of sake and a few glasses of wine, with all that we only paid about $45 each. If we had had that meal at Nobu it easily would have been over $100 each.

By the time we left the place was super packed and people were standing everywhere having drinks and waiting for tables. It was so funny to walk outside and see such a scene on Calle Ocho. So glad to have found this place!

There some Mr. Yum haters on here and I can't figure out why.

The massaman curry is a MUST have!!! Best ever!!! We also had an amazing lobster roll which consisted off of lobster, avocado, and a delicious secret sauce on top. The plate also brought a side bowl of lobster chunks, breaded and fried....Yum!!! Food presentation competes with the best of them. The restaurant was packed which compromised the service but the waiter more than made up for it by giving us two complimentary sake bottles that put my girlfriend and I over the top.

The restaurant is tucked away on 19 ave and Calle Ocho. It's located on the North side of the street. I mention this because my girlfriend and I (along with two friends that went on a later date) drove past it twice before spotting it out. This place is packed on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday...etc, so be prepared to wait atleast 15 minutes before being seated. Believe me, it's sooooo worth it!!!! 5 stars all the way

Dear Mr. Yum,

WOW, this place really is YUMMY!  We had the most amazing time here on Tuesday, and we wanted to thank you so much for the outstanding service, hospitality, and of course FOOD!

When we arrived, we were a tad confused, as it seemed that the entire restaurant was occupied.  It turns out that a huge party was celebrating a 40th birthday and the owner, Bond, had given them permission for the event, as well as for ringing in Karaoke.

Most people would have probably turned and walked out of the restaurant, as even I was almost put off by the huge party and the roaring laughter that was resonating throughout.  But the bf and I just looked at each other and said "Perfect!".

We found a table in the corner and sat down.  We were promptly greeted by an apologetic waiter, who asked us what we would like to drink...  A bottle of wine of course, and off he goes to get it.

In the meantime, Bond made his way to our table to introduce himself and also apologize for the birthday party that was taking over his restaurant.  He was very friendly and courteous, and had a very charming personality.  I think what I liked most was his hair!  He has FABULOUS hair!

Anyhow, Mr. Yum, the service was impeccable.  We couldn't have asked for better.  So, our waiter, who's name I don't think I caught, returned with our wine and promptly poured out 2 glasses.  By this time, Bond returned himself with 2 complimentary dishes from the kitchen - shrimp in this orange sauce on top of orange slices and a spicy beef salad.  Both were just DELICIOUS.  I love the shrimp and orange flavor combo.  Had not tried that previously and it really rocked my socks!

Next we ordered the tuna tataki, which is a MUST for me at any Japanese restaurant.  It was arranged on the plate so nicely, it was almost a crime to dig in, but once we did, the poor tuna didn't have a chance!

For our entree, we shared the Seafood Tempura Platter, which was perfectly battered and fried.  There were Lobster, Scallops, and Shrimp, as well as Broccoli, Squash and Carrots.  I enjoyed it all thoroughly.

Throughout the meal Bond made it a point to stop by the table and see how we were enjoying the meal.  After we ate, we stuck around watching the birthday party karaoke (they were Brazilian and it was hilarious to hear them singing Madonna!), and finished off our bottle of wine.  Bond joined us for a drink with his own Sake, which I thought was a nice touch.

During our drink he asked how I found out about the restaurant.  I told him about Yelp and the great reviews that have been written, and how his restaurant is becoming quite popular.  I gave him a "You've been Yelped" card and invited him to check it out and open a business owner's account.

The birthday party brought us dessert, sharing their delicious birthday cake with us, for surviving their antics!  I thought that was really nice of them.

Overall Mr. Yum, this place is just fantastic.  The location is perfect and your clientele is already building.  Mr. Yum, you are YUMMY!  Thank you for the wonderful experience, even with the birthday party...  Which, by the way, I think its amazing that you allowed them to have their birthday party at your restaurant.  I love the fact that Bond loves a party!  Maybe we'll get a Yelp group together for a fiesta!  ;-)

We will be back very soon to get the quieter version of Mr. Yum.  I can't wait to try other items on the menu!

With Love,
Sabrina*

Everything everyone has said on Yelp about Mr. Yum to date is true.  After having my friend GIovanny G. recommend this restaurant to me, I decided to take an out-of-town friend to dinner there.

I gotta say... Gio was totally right!  This place rocks!  And who woulda thought this would be in Little Havana?!

My friend and I got the "hangover soup" on the house, which was delicious and better than your regular ole miso soup.  It had a vegetable broth, tofu, celery and I forget what other yummy goodness.  We also ordered hot saki 'cause it was cold outside!  And that sake just kept on flowing throughout the entire meal.

First up after the soup was the Hamachi Jalapeno dish.  Let me just say the fish at Mr. Yum was very fresh!  This was especially evident with this dish.  This was so delicious, it was like butter in my mouth...  My standout dish of the entire meal.  We then had the Shrimp Shumai (fried), which was good.  The Tuna Tataki was a very generous portion -  also fresh and good.  Tried Soft Shell Crab Tempura for the first time and liked it.  For rolls, we had the Havana roll (tempura fried white fish, spicy mayo), the Bagel roll and the Yummy roll (I can't remember what was in it, but I THINK it was tuna and hamachi?).  I meant to take home a menu to remember all this, but forgot to. :(

For dessert we ordered the Thai Doughnuts, but the owner came out and told us they had run out of it.  We ended up having the Tempura Fried Ice Cream instead and that was delish.

The presentation of every dish was great.  Some items I will admit I have had better elsewhere, but overall I thought it was great.

Mr. Yum has only been open for about 3 weeks.  The service was pretty decent despite there not being enough servers for the restaurant yet.  The owner said that would change soon.  And they seem to be doing well already.  It wasn't so busy when we got there, but by the time we left it had filled up nicely.

This place is quiet a gem and I wish them great success!  I will definitely come back here sooner rather than later.

The fish wasn't bad but the sushi rice was cold, sour, and pungent. They must have used refrigerated rice and substituted white vinegar for rice vinegar. I am a bit disappointed, stick with Matsuri for sushi!

The patrons next to me went with Thai and left ecstatic raving about how good their meal was, so I'm kind of tempted to return for the beef masaman. I would recommend that everyone lean towards the Thai.

Btw. It's worth the trip just to meet the guy with the big hair.

Food was good, service was good, inside is kawaii (super cute).  However, I don't feel the food quality matches the prices.  I would give Mr. Yum another star if the food quality improved or the prices were a little less.  I may one day give the restaurant another try, but there are quite a few other Sushi/Thai restaurants that consistently deliver the goods...so it could be awhile.

Also, they claim to have delivery, but I've tried on three separate occasions to give them a second try via delivery service.  Two times they didn't answer the phone over a three hour span of time.  The other time I was told they didn't have a driver that night.

I have to give Mr. Yum a full  5-star after they bribed me with all that free food!!! :) I read about Mr. Yum and my girl friend had mentioned it to me before...so we decided to give it a try tonight, it surpassed my expectations!

Location and decor:
On SW 8th st between 22nd and 19 ave...on the left side of the road (it's a one way street)...I almost missed it but my GPS saved me a detour! There's ample parking on both sides of the restaurant, I parked in the lot where there were other stores/restaurant. Mr. Yum had their own parking lot which was rather decent...and a wheelchair ramp! (Kudos for them!) Parking was free...a plus, parking is always at the back of my head where ever I go in Miami. 2 outdoor tables...probably good for those who smoke! The decor inside was lovely, all red and white...hearts everywhere. (No pun intended there!) I thought it was decor of the month...since it is February! :) Small seating area at the bar...lovely table settings....the chopstick rest was a fishie...too cute!

I was the only one in there at 7pm, waiting for my friend. By about 7.45pm, the place was starting to get packed. Great for couples, girl friends and even families! There was this small couch lounge area...set in the corner, I think it would be fun for a small group!

Food:
Alright...where do I begin? The sushi chef whose Thai...offered me a sample of the calle ocho tuna...yummy yummy! Then we had the hangover soup...i think it was miso soup with garlic, tofu, celery and other veggies. I liked it...considering I hate celery! :) So this is the breakdown

Thai Iced tea - sweet as always...and good!
Corona - $4...not a bad price
Crispy duck with basil, green peppers and onions and white rice - So the waitress asked if I liked duck and I can't say no to duck. It isn't on the menu but they made it! $19.95...Bong *tall-haired owner/head waiter* guy said they are still trying new stuff for a permanent menu..it's some good s_ _ _!!! :)
Sundried tomato roll - interesting...but $7.95 for no fish? hmm...
Dinner for two - $36.71

At the end, Bong brought out apple cider sake, a cocktail drink...in this glasses that were round at the bottom, they just kinda balanced and wobbled!! :) The apple cider sake was soooooooooo good...and he gave us two round glasses each!! Omg, he was too kind!

I was studying the menu whilst waiting for my friend...they got a decent range of rolls and sushi...with some interesting ones I've never heard of. Had the usual Thai and Jap entrees (pad chai, green curry, red curry and teriyakis...)They had pineapple rice which I would have ordered...if they hadn't distracted me with the duck! Few but interesting choices of desserts..which I didn't have room to try...next time for sure!

Service:
Obviously service was amazing! I mean, the minute I walked in...the sushi chef and waitress were talking to me...asking me where Im from and all..I noticed Bong walking people out to their car when they came in to pick up their orders, I thought that was a nice touch! Even as the place got busy, the waitress came to check on us several times! I overheard Bong introducing himself to some of the other customers too!

I must say..this might be my new favorite asian place...I will make that drive from Kendall to Little Havana for some Mr. Yum!!

Tip-bits:

Go early in the evening, they fill up fast!
I think they are giving out a lot of samples/comp to win customers and to try out foods for a new permanent menu...so hurry go!! :)
Probably make reservations on weekends or for bigger groups

Very interesting place, nothing like the rest of Calle Ocho, that's for sure, a bit of SoBe on Calle Ocho.  It has good lunch specials though not particularly inexpensive ($10.95).  The dishes I tried were quite tasty and the service was quite excellent and attentive.  Weird decor but I liked it after I became a bit accustomed to it.  Rob C. is right about Bond, he is pleasant as can be and happy to provide well informed information about the food.

My companion and I had the mixed vegetables and the massaman curry and both were simple and excellent.  The accompanying rice was fine.

In any event,  I recommend this restaurant ...

As a general rule I try to avoid pretty places in favor for a hole-in-the-wall, I will make an exception for Mr. Yum. It's that good.

A little bit of SOBE in the middle of Calle Ocho would be one way to describe this place, it's completely out of place in a neighborhood full of pawn shops and scary looking food markets.

I usually don't really rate the service of a place  either, but Mr. Yum makes another exception. The service was awesome!
Maybe it was how the chef came out to deliver the complimentary fried wonton topped with tuna and guacamole, maybe it was how the owner took our order and spent the time to tell us about how many of the dishes are recipes from his own mother. Maybe it was just the overall attentiveness that I've come to not expect in this city. But enough about that, onto the food!

I decided the Beef Massaman Curry, my friends ordered the Chicken Pad Thai.
Before the main entrees came out we were given another surprise, complimentary miso soup. The soup was unlike any other miso soup I've had, it was chock full of stuff and extremely flavorful. I was already loving the place even before I got the rest of my food.

Next our entrees came out, A+ for presentation, I had to take a picture (as seen on here)
My curry was exactly how massaman curry should be: thick and rich, full of coconut milk goodness.
The Pad Thai was equally excellent, chock full of chopped peanuts.

The prices were on par with similar places in Miami, like Moon Thai, but excels in quality and service.

Don't let the neighborhood scare you, it's well worth the trip.

As a side note, Mi Rinconcito Mexicano is next door to here and is another noteworthy place to eat in Miami's food desert, and both have their own private parking lots.

Love this place. It's definitely a much needed gem along the usual Calle Ocho trashy joints.

The only thing better than the food is the service and appreciation shown to their guests. The owner is among the friendliest I have encountered and always makes you feel welcome.

Ok. Sushi in Calle Ocho? In Little Havana? You got it.

First and foremost there's only a handful of places I would eat in Calle Ocho (Caza Juancho and Taqueria Mexicana come to mind) so what a surprise when I heard from a friend about this lovely little diamond in the rough. So shocking that I invited my mom last minute as Mr. Yum was a "must-see".

As others yelpers have mentioned, it is ultra modern, SoBe meets Ikea due to the stylish decor, lounge music, beautiful looking people (surprising in this area) and even an adorable semiprivate corner table with dim lights and chandelier.

The owner Bond introduced himself to us and was kind through out the whole evening explaining his mother's "hangover soup" and even taking a shot of saki with us. So you can imagine, the service was superb.

Food was just as good. Best Miso soup to date that had the perfect amount of greens (scallions and cilantro), tiny chopped tofu cubes and was made from a delicious vegetable broth. Next came their complimentary appetizer which had crab with spicy guacamole on a fried won-ton that reminded me of Abokado's (R.I.P.) nachos. Everything we tried was great but what stand out for us was their Popcorn Shrimp, Havana Roll (white fish) and their vegetarian Sun-dried Tomato w/ Avocado. Dessert was a special version of their Thai Donuts with the addition of Tempura Twinkies. Yes,  you read that correctly...

Overall a FANTASTIC experience that I will be repeating.

Ikea-look, Valentine-red, and modern Sushi/Thai/Japanese restaurant in the not-so-hot dining area of Little Havana's Calle Ocho.

I was lured to this place by several sources - Thrillist Miami had a nice article; two other reviews in Yelp; and a notable mention in Chowhound. And then I was also in the area.

There were several things that were impressed upon me besides the cleanliness and the modern atmosphere that is unusual for Calle Ocho - the spot-on service (every details were accounted for), a wide offering in the menu, the presentation / plating, and complimentary dishes.

It's not cheap, especially by Calle Ocho's standards, but it's not expensive either for the type of food that is offered. If it was in another part of Miami, the prices would be reasonable - but you'd get better service and treatment here for sure.

The complimentary starter was a crab ochi on a fried thin wonton "chip" was delicious. It is a simple mixture of crab and guacamole on a fried wonton chip but it was full of flavor and a great way to start off the meal.

Then we received a complimentary vegetable miso soup - it's a bit different from the standard miso thanks to there being more vegetables which brings about a heartier and healthier taste that still would warm a soul in an unusually cold Miami night.

For our order, we had ordered a tuna ochi plate which was made on a bed of rice and had more fried wontons. This was not in the menu, but we liked it a lot as we did with our appetizer version.

We also ordered a dragon roll ($12.95 - fried jumbo shrimp, asparagus, avocado, scallions, masago and spicy-mayo) which was delicious and wonderfully made - the sushi stayed intact very well and it was fresh enough that it felt as if it could melt in the mouth.

We also ordered the fried rice ($13.95 - onions, tomatoes, scallions and egg) and added shrimp. The fried rice was good and well made and the shrimps were big. But I'm not so sure if it justified the price since I could get really good fried rice at The Lunch Room for much less. If disregarding the price, it did not disappoint.

The hot tea was a standard tea bag, but it was served nicely and when my companion was served honey and lemon for her tea, the honey was served in a small cafecito cup on a nice small plate that had sliced lemons on the side.

It was very cute, as were the fish-like chopstick rests on the tables, and as was the whole place as well.

This place managed by a pair of owners is run efficiently and they have further plans for promotion, including being active in social networks (e.g. Facebook), and starting happy hours.

I'll definitely return!

Every time I visit a place that is Thai/Vietnamese or Thai/Sushi I worry. My motto is do just one thing and do it well. The Thai food I had here was more of a fusion blend and was not what I expected. The Massaman curry that gets high praise on this forum is far from a true Thai Massaman curry. Its more like a overly rich  gravy sauce with huge potatoes and heavy coco milk.  It was way to heavy for my palate and is not authentic Thai. They also had no idea what I was talking about when i asked for Thai sticky rice. The Thai beef salad was ok - the lettuce looked a bit old and the beef flavor was nice and salty but I suspect the beef was grilled in a MSG sauce. I would have given Mr, Yum 2 stars but my GF had the sushi and was impressed with the quality and freshness of the fish - toro, hamchi and salmon were all very good by her account (did not taste or smell fishy) which is a rarity in these parts.

This is what I would call more of a "fusion" restaurant where they make dishes based on standards but alter them to their own likings or what they think the clientele will like. I'm not a big fan of this especially when most places in Florida cant even get Thai or Japanese right in the first place. The atmosphere is vibrant and the restaurant has a nice buzz to it although our server kept playing with her hair over our food and was not knowledgeable on the food. If your looking for fusion go to Asia De Cuba instead and get better service and quality of food. If your in the area I say go ahead and give it a try but if not I don't recommend going out of your way - there are better sushi and Thai places out there.

Not to beat a dead dog here but - I wish restaurants in Florida would stick to one cuisine and do it really well. I assume they are afraid they will not get enough clientele, but I believe strongly that if you do Thai or any other cuisine for that matter impeccably well -  the word will get out you will have a packed restaurant. I think consumers these days have much higher standards and expectations than most restaurateur's realize and people are willing to travel for good food.

Went last night again and what a great time! Thank you Bond and Andres for providing the best service and thanks to the chef for such amazing food. I took my girlfriends there for the first time and we have now named Mr. Yum the official restaurant of ladies night.

If you haven't gone.... GO!

Based on the overwhelming feedback that we'd heard from the folks here, Liana and I had to go check it out.

Lo, and behold, the cute little sushi restaurant on Calle Ocho(!?!?) matches the hype!  The food and service were excellent, and I impressed with the selection of sakes they had on their menu.

We weren't plied with as much free food as others seem to have been, but we WERE given complimentary amuse bouches (Hey, I'm not being pretentious, that's what they were!) at the beginning, and the owner/manager poured us complimentary glasses of his personal sake with our dessert (he said it went well with dessert).

We ordered a few of their more pricey appetizer-style dishes, and one large roll, and all were very fresh, and made exceptionally well.

I wish the selection on the menu was better, but the sushi chef assured me that if they had the ingredients he'd make anything we asked for.  I'm just not always feeling that creative, and rely on the menu for inspiration...

Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and were definitely going back.

Now, I've just got to make time for  Mi Rinconcito Mexicano, which is almost literally next door...

An Asian restaurant with refills?! PINCH ME NOW! I MUST BE DREAMING!
No seriously, if IKEA had a Thai restaurant inside it, this is exactly what it would look like. This place literally looks like somebody stole a restaurant from South Beach that was completely furnished in IKEA and dropped it in the middle of Little Havana... that being said, the interior is very cool and modern but in a very clean looking way, and the fast passed techno music makes you wonder when the lasers and fog machines are going to kick in

Well besides the aesthetics this place definitely delivers where it counts - the food and service. The food was excellent, the last time I had Pad Thai this good was when I was in Brooklyn! Plus they brought out an appetizer and soup for us, all on the house... the food was, as I mentioned, excellent, I had the Pad Thai, my "thermometer" for Thai places, additionally the presentation of everything was very nice... and did I mention REFILLS on the soda?! Yes! You heard right! A non-buffet Asian restaurant that doesn't suck in Miami with REFILLS?! Call the newspapers; seriously, I think this is a first!

The service was excellent, I believe our waiter was the owner, and he was very friendly explaining how he called the soup "hangover soup" because his mother would make it for him on Sunday mornings after he had been out partying all night (!) and the other dishes based on his mother's recipes.

Overall I was very happy with my experience at Mr. Yum and will definitely be returning!

Hooray - delicious sushi follows me!! I recently moved from the beach to brickell and was most sad to leave my favorite spot Sushi Rock, the best little inexpensive sushi place.

To my happiness, I walk into Mr Yum the other day, and Tony, my favorite sushi chef from sushi rock, is behind the counter :) !!! Hooray!! And they guy with the extremely tall hair (i forget his name) is also there!!! Joy!!!

Great for sushi, perfect rice and always delicious, and very reasonable prices. The sushi is always presented really pretty too as well as tasting amazing :) I have also tried the pad thai and basil with shrimp and they were good too but not as good as indochine imo. Will stick with Mr Yum for my sushi go to. Check it out!!!
