Love this place... great haircuts, fantastic stylists and hair washers (is that a title) and really pretty much everyone of the staff. Tough to beat a place where I can get a great cut and a beer and hear some good music and talk to fun people.

They only get 4 stars for not having the best selection of draft beer though. So when Stella and Sierra are changed. 5 stars it is.

Cheers!

Good place to stop in during happy hour after work. Went here on a Wednesday night and was able to get $3 Stella & Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

It was much less crowded than its neighboring bars with plenty of seating. Got a great couch seat near the window, which provided people watching and comfort to boot. Good place to grab an early drink in FIDI if you want a little more upscale atmosphere and the ability to hear your pal talk.

Love this place. Only downsides - drinks are still pricey, and i sometimes feel under dressed and (sometimes, but not always) out of place since there are so many suit-men in this joint for happy hour.

Upsides: I love the ambiance. The owners are awesome as well; organized a bone marrow drive here, and Kumi and the MR staff were very accommodating and great. Lovely place to hold a happy hour or private event!

One of my fave evenings to drop by for a drink with friends are Fridays.. drinks, pizza (FREE, ordered by MR! yes i said it, free food.),  playing dominoes (they have board games, just check under their lounge tables), and controlling the playlist (big thumbs up, because I'm a music freak).

Now, if only they offered mani-pedis at happy hour... Hmm..

LOVE THIS PLACE. Can't say enough about my experience here. I love everything about it. This place made SF more hip the day it opened. Such a unique approach, they couldn't do it any better.

Highly, highly suggest you check it out!

I really wanted to like this place..."urban" barbershop for professional men...membership tiers like "mogul", "hitter", and "player", I was sure this was a place for a young, black professional. Not so.. Had I even paid attention to the website I might have noticed there was a definite lack of color in staff and patrons shown in the professional photos. While I can deal with the fact that perhaps not too many of "us" may currently have membership, I can't quite get why there's not even a staff member of color shown. Can I at least feel invited? This is highly suspect and very off-putting. Marketing is targeted and it is clear I am not in their targeted market. This place is high-priced and would have even been worth it had I not stuck out as an outsider in an "urban" environment.

Sleek. Sophisticated. Classy.

One of the most unique concepts I've seen, this beautiful space in the heart of the Financial District is a true retreat for the Monday warrior.

A hybrid between a modern lounge and a salon, this space is the true definition of a Gentleman's club.

Came here last night for a reception with Kamala Harris' finance committee and enjoyed a great happy hour with some wonderful old and new friends.

As we set forward to 2010, we came together to reflect on the great fundraising we had done in the past quarter and to harness our energy for the next big haul.

MR is a perfect combination of astounding service with a gorgeous smile, a calming decor, and a sleek tone that leaves you blinded to the stress that was 'Monday'.

Come in for a trim, a cold beer, and sit back with a good gloss covered read.

Sometimes a mental escape will do, but when in need of the real thing, step foot into MR and let that suit of yours rest a bit.

After leaving MR with my husband this afternoon, we both agreed that it was a very cool concept and a great experience. I did not know about MR, until I heard about it through the Deal of the Day on Groupon. I purchased a groupon for my husband and my cousin as gifts thinking that it would be fun for them to try. We made an appointment to get the ever growing "afro" tamed. We were greeted by the very friendly and personable, Erica who told us all about the bar/barbershop. After a beer, he was treated to a shampoo and scalp massage by Erica, that he said was the best ever. Brandon then gave him and excellent cut and was also very fun and outgoing. Even though it wasn't "my" experience, it was still a great one and I know he will enjoy going back in a few weeks.

I joined Mr. a few months ago and, unfortunately, have mixed reviews.

Let's start with what works:  extremely friendly staff (all very good-looking girls, which I think hits their demographic) and great ambience.

Because of the friendly staff, I was really reluctant to post this somewhat negative review, however this is the beauty of Yelp.

What doesn't work for me is:  the quality of the services, the ironclad 12-month contract, and the location (terrible parking), which I will detail below.

1. Services.  To be fair and offer full disclosure: prior to Mr., I was used to going to a stylist (Vidal Sassoon, Aveda), not a barbershop.  If you are a guy who requires a very simple cut and you work downtown and will utilize the bar and other amenities, Mr. is for you.  If you are used to getting a higher quality cut and don't work in close proximity, you might want to think twice.

2. Contract:  I tried to sever my contract due to my dissatisfaction of the quality of haircuts, but faced an uphill battle.  Don't be persuaded to join via contract until you have found a stylist that you like.

3. Location:  the parking for Mr. is NOT convenient.  If you work downtown and can walk, great.  Otherwise, not-so-great.

I love this club.

I became a member here about a year ago, and have had a great experience. My barber (V-dell), is a master of his trade. Also, since the time I have been at MR. he has taken the time to introduce me to other members that share interests and have similar professional goals. The one time he ever ran late (turned out to be 7 minutes) he called me personally to let me know in advance. That kind of customer service is gold.

As for the club, it has enriched my life significantly. I have had a chance hang out with people who are at the top of their respective professions (business, entertainment, sports, politics, etc.) as well as individuals like me who are ambitious and excited about the future. The relationships I have developed here are priceless, and far out weigh the cost of membership.

The staff here are exceptional. They are what make this place.  They work tirelessly to make this place feel like home, and it does.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Read my original review where I tried to quit amicably, but these jerks just won't go down without a fight.  Hence they're going down from 2 stars to 1 (and that's only because 0 stars isn't an option).

I was originally advised that after 6 months I would be able to cancel my outrageous $65/month "membership" (where I still had to sometimes wait over an hour for a haircut, even when I had an appointment because more "premier" members decided to come in ahead of me at the last minute).

Well last Monday, exactly 6 months after I signed up, I asked to cancel my membership.  I was given the runaround and was told that management would get back to me.

One week later, management finally replied, and obviously they tried to talk me out of it.  I explicitly said no.  Well today (5 days later, and almost 2 weeks after I originally asked to cancel) I got another email from them saying that "management was discussing my case."

What the hell is there to discuss?  I'm cancelling my membership - JUST LET IT GO!

Clearly Web 2.0 and user-generated-content are foreign concepts to these knuckleheads.

If you're a testosterone-infused tool (think frat boy come investment banker) then you'll fit right in here.  Mr. is the kind of place where these types come to inflate their egos with $85 haircuts and overpriced drinks.

I felt a little bad for the stylists who work here.  These women seem forced to flirt with the "members," who generally treat the women with little respect -- at least from what I observed.

The haircut itself was a good haircut.  And it comes with a free drink.  (Or at least the drink price was buried in the $85 cut.)

Be wary of free or discounted referral passes -- they always come with a hard sell at the end of the haircut.  Staff members take you aside and pressure you into signing a contract to join a monthly haircut club with a high monthly fee, a membership initiation fee, and a termination fee.  They have no literature for you to review the terms and conditions, and you're told that you can't take a day to think about it.

To add insult to injury, the staff will tell you that the "discount" on the pass is really for your second haircut, and that you still owe the full $85 for the haircut you just received, even though the discount offer says nothing about this caveat.  When I objected to this bait and switch, the salon did relent.  The experience was about as fun as extricating myself from an Orlando time share presentation.

Mr. might be right for you if you have unlimited amounts of money, you need your stylist to flirt with you, and you enjoy hanging around jerks.  Otherwise, I would try somewhere else.

Disclaimer:  I'm not a man, I just look like one before you start drinking  - Therefore, I am unable to get my hair cut here.

Look, MR., I don't like rules.  Surely there's something I can do to become a member.  Maybe trick the staff by wearing a sports bra and not waxing my eyebrows for awhile?  Aww, who am I kidding...  I should stop focusing on joining MR. and work harder on joining MRS.  Lord knows getting a guy to marry me ain't gonna be a cakewalk.

*deep breath*

I can't be a member, but I CAN drag my split-ends through the door for a drink.  I've been to MR. a few times for cocktail shindigs and most recently came here with the Yelp crew to watch the Inaguration.

This morning, I had trouble concentrating on some of the famous folk because large bottles of champagne were lined up under the huge television.  What's a patriotic alcoholic with A.D.D. to do?  Fortunately, I had a spicy bloody mary (thanks Yelp!) to take the edge off and help me focus.

If I ever get a sex change, then I will definitely become a member.  The concept behind a barbershop with booze and monthly dues is genius.

Not only will I have nice, short, manly hair, but I'll be able to find shoes that fit me, too.

This is an amazing space.  I hosted my thirtieth bday party here last Saturday and they did a wonderful job hosting.  The place was practically devoted to my guests. I coordinated my party with Kumi, one of the owners who was very responsive and accommodating for organizing my party.  They have large mezzanine which they were able to move couches onto and set candlelights on.  I loved it.

The atmosphere is sleek and spacious.  The decor is very manly, which makes sense for a place called MR.  The colors are dark and the furniture is modern.  The bar also retails cool babershop gadgets.

Since the barbershop is closed on Saturday night we were able to tour the place and I saw the barber area which looks very cool.  Perhaps I'll schedule my man an appointment here.

The bar is long with lots of areas to congregate, in addition to some well placed sofas in the front of the house.  I loved the digital jukebox that they have where you can choose songs to dance to.  It is very easy to use and also very sleek.

MR is a perfect place for a private party.  The hosts were lovely and had fun with us.  I want to check it out during happy hour when others are there.  I love Men, so of course I love MR the bar.

Yelp really couldn't have picked a better place to watch a man get sworn in as president, at 8 a.m. on a Tuesday, no less.  It was a great place for the inauguration, but for future visits...maybe not.

MR. is a teaspoon of old money (and I would know, as I used to work at the Hahvahd Club), a pinch of neighborhood barbershop, and a dash of youth.  You can head upstairs and sit in one of the 4 barber chairs for a straight-edge shave, buy one of the many (expensive) items for sale that are displayed under the glass that is the bar, or ogle the graffiti-adorned skateboards that are displayed on the walls.  Of course, as I am not a member (or a client...oh wait, that's a different hair club), all I could do is look at the skateboards, but that's cool.

The space is open and I dig it, and I love that we were able to watch the inauguration in such a cool spot, but there are 2 things that just put me off.

#1- The bartenders just were not with it.  I don't know if it was the hour or if they were intimidated by all us yelpers or what, but they just didn't have it together.  And I'm not being mean, but I've bartended for YEARS and this is just not how it is done with this amount of people.

#2- $10 for a mimosa?  WHAT?  I did NOT see them pick and squeeze those oranges themselves, and as you're mixing the champagne with juice, it's not worth it to use really good stuff.  The $10  is just not smart business sense when it comes to tipping.  $9, I could live with...but the $10?  What if I only have a ten dollar bill?  You don't get a tip.  I was not expecting that and almost had a heart attack.

Basically, I need to get one of my Hahvahd Club pals to come out here and buy me booze from this place.

Or get a sex change and win the lottery.  Not necessarily in that order.

A friend and I heard about MR and decided it would be a great fathers day present to get our husbands a gift certificate. But first we went to check out the place ourselves and the 'hot' girls that were supposed to give the haircuts, shaves, etc.
We went, decided we were hotter, and got the gift certificates.
Months went by, my husband was never downtown, or never had time to go, until one afternoon on a Saturday when he said he needed a haircut and I insisted he used his gift card. After all, it was not cheap.
He called and got an appointment the same day.
He left in a good mood and came back in an awful one.
He said the shaving was the most painful experience, his face was red, and later that day turned into a bit of a rash. He complained about it for 3 days! His face was sore for that long.
The hair cut was pretty bad. But I didn't say anything out loud, because why add insult to injury - literally!
And to complete the saga, instead of getting this services done by a hot girl in stilettos, he was tortured by some older guy.

Well, my first review was fun, though too low-brow, I suppose. I cuss like a salty pirate sometimes. To the citizens of Yelp (and the Review Guidelines), I request your forginess. To the rest of you... well, nothing, I guess. ;-) But since Yelping is about real, honest reviews, I'll share with you the whole story.

Here is my new, sparklingly cleaned up review, keeping all the facts but keeping it within Yelp's handy dandy guidelines. If anyone wants to read my earlier review--I have it on file for anyone who wants to read it--just send me a note asking for it. It's not that great, but it's saved in my email forever. TITLE:
Disappointment doesn't even begin to cover it... (single tear)
AKA
It's the small things...

I submitted my application to be a customer (yeah...I know), yet had high hopes for an amazing experience. A "young lady" called to set the appointment, which I set for a couple Saturdays in the future. I wasn't quite in need for a haircut at the moment, but had heard interesting things about this place.

Let me back up a bit--I haven't even entered their doors yet to this day, and sadly never will.

I'm a very busy guy. I don't expect a lot, but I expect a simple request to be fulfilled, especially from a place that aims to offer the best in service.

When I set the initial appointment, I asked for them to confirm it by sending me an email since I was not at my computer, nor calendar, and I'm somewhat forgetful. They do nearly everything via email anyway, including an automatic day-before reminder for your appointment.

*Side Note: you should check out their web site--it's as awesome as I'd have expected from a place like this trying to be what it is. No sarcasm intended! They actually got it done professionally (with a real designer or two) to do it. That's respectable in my book.

But alas, I was let down by this employee (first contact = first impression) to do me this small request while she maintained her aire of being seriously imposed upon. The "young lady" in question gently sloughed off my simple request as if it were dead skin cells after a sugar scrub. I guess neither I, nor my money is worth 10 seconds of her time. She already had my email (hell--address, job title, CREDIT CARD number so they could and would charge me in case I forgot my appointment--which I would have likely done because 1 day emailed notice isn't enough in my life). Some service...

My first impression was the worst I've ever had from a business in the entire bay area. And those that followed were not much better.

A couple days later, I emailed them to request to cancel my appointment. After thinking about the sort of service this place was supposed to have, including their intrinsic web and email strength, but backed by some "young lady", I wasn't having it. My fat cash was not going to feed this employee nor support the owners in this fiscally painful time.

IN CLOSING:
1 STAR (this was originally 3: I had been giving them the benefit of the doubt for good drinks/trims/shaves/ambiance, but I decided to not assume in this case--you know what happens when you "assume" right?) for a good shot at a wonderful thing, yet shot down by the "young lady" who royally screwed up and insulted me before even entering their door. It's too bad because I was dying to try it. My big 3-0 birthday is this week, and a somewhat large-sized group of my friends were going to go with me, get pampered man-style, drink a lot, then go out on the town. Now neither I nor they will ever go to to MR after this whole ordeal.

A great place to get a drink after work in the FiDi.  Even though it's a boys club, for some reason every time I go there are more women then men at the bar.  Decent wine choices, though perhaps a bit pricey.  Good place to watch a game or get shaved if you're a guy I suppose.

Only thing that kind of annoyed me was the cheesy bartenders that were clearly hired less for their mixing skills and more for their willingness to push memberships.

You gotta be kidding me.  80% of the women there seemed like staff.

The overall concept is interesting (sans faux femmes), but they should have gone with a true social club.  It's a great location for one.  The guys who started this place seem dynamic, and hopefully they'll find the right groove.  The setting would be warm and inviting if the right audience was sought.  The target audience right now is a guy in his 30's who thinks he's GQ, with some disposable cash and needs his ego stroked.  I don't think there is a kitchen and the lack of ANY food almost became unbearable.  They did bring in ample Extreme Pizza at about 6PM, and they get kudos for that.  But a guy in his 30's who takes care of himself and truly is up and coming doesn't eat cheese pizza.

If the business model was revised just a little, I think they could nail this one.

However, as it stands now, this place is a manly mens' club, and in San Francisco that means you may get a surprise or two.  I got a lot of eye contact from (a) the female staff and (b) men who were other than hetrosexual.  I felt both of these groups tried too hard - a real turn off.

I also wondered how they compensate so many staff.  Are they paid on a commission for memberships sold or do they get a living wage?  I actually care that workers are compensated fairly.  The overly aggressive female hostesses noted in other reviews could merely be desperate humans trying to earn a living.

What they got right:

location, location, location
a business model that includes more than just another bar
the economic status of the patrons
a membership organization that is open to everyone

What they got wrong:

the male/female ratio seems a little uncomfortable
the females seem like staff or not real
lack of food
while there seems to be a lot of staff, getting drink service is impossible when in the seated lounge area

I am a fan of MR for 3 reasons:

The cool, men's club environment makes my bf actually want to get his haircut - and not from some hole in the wall spot that has him walking out looking like a hungry rat ravaged his head of hair.

The staff is cool and isn't "like omg, get out of here, you girl, you."

The bar. Nothing really special, but sure makes waiting in a hair salon a lot more enjoyable!

I like this place. At first I wasn't sure why, I mean, though it is well decorated, it's got the same dark wood motif as other bars, so why does this place stand out? I can't be sure, but I think it's because of its high ceilings. One feeling you get when you walk into this place is that it seems very open. It's not particularly wide, so really it's just high.

Anyway, it does the trick. In any case, the decor is well done and the staff is friendly and capable. I've gone to a couple Obama events here so I can't really judge the crowd. All in all I'd say this place is worth a visit. The high ceilings give the space an inviting feel that's both distinctive and refreshing.

I think a gentleman's club combined with a hair salon is sheer genius. This place was right by my old office next to the Pyramid, and they make the ladies feel special too by offering drink specials. I came with a friend who gets his hair cut there once and definitely returned... quite smart with a lounge feel. I like!

I would be a very metro man.  And I would get my hair cut here.  Only here.  And shave.

This is the coolest barbershop ever.  I want a membership, but alas, I am a lady.  I came here for an event and it was awesome.

Checked this place out because it's 2 blocks from my office and I've wondered about it since they opened.   I finally stepped in for the free intro cut.

Things I liked: Drinking while you get your haircut sounds like a cool idea..unfortunately I got an afternoon appointment and had a meeting later, so no beer :(   There's TV's everywhere, so you could watch a game during the whole process--even while washing your hair.  The haircut was good, and while I don't normally talk to my barber, the guy who cut my hair was friendly but not annoying...and just a normal dude (who I actually think was straight--gasp!).  The products they used smelled good (I realize this may seem to contradict my last observation, but whatever...I don't like to stink).   The sales pitch (to be expected with a free cut) wasn't bad at all.  Anyone who thought their sales pitch was "pushy" is probably just a "pu__y".  If you felt pressured from that sales picth good luck buying a car, a house, or even a pack of gum.

Here's what I didn't like:
$65/cut (once per month) is a little steep compared to a barber shop, but honestly not crazy for a stylist.  They'll tell you about how it includes trims, but any stylist will do that for you.  The girl who washed my hair (not the stylist) was annoying.  I think she was going to start in with the sales pitch, but she shut up when I told her that I was visiting to see if Mr. is really only a place for metrosexuals and douchebags.  (It is not.)  The contract is definitely the lamest thing about that place.  I'd probably pay that price (or close to it) to get my hair cut and drink beer at the same time, but I don't want to be forced to go every time.  The fact that there is an initiation fee ($200) is also lame, but they offered to cut it in half and waive my first month without me saying a word, so not too bad really.

All in all, I liked this place.  I don't know whether it's worh the extra $30/mo over what I currently pay for my cuts, and I don't like being locked in for a year, but if I didn't have the stingyness of my 1/2 Scottish 1/2 Jewish heritage I'd probably do it.  A previous comment talks about how this is a place for 30-something former fraternity boys who are now investment bankers, lawyers, etc.  Well, it is...and that's not a bad thing.

Oh, and you can pay your year up-front at 10% off--($702 total).  That makes it $58.50/mo, for all you math-challenged people.

Stylish, fun twist on the ol' barber shop.  Great idea, and a superb way to make extra cash - ladies drink while their man gets a shave.  Worth checking out!

I was a member of MR. for several months. I am a pretty normal guy (i.e. get a haircut once a month) and have easy hair to cut, so my needs are pretty limited. I think the concept of MR is awesome, but the execution was lacking severely.   My major problem with MR is that they were ALWAYS LATE.  Like most of the clientele that MR aims to attract, my time is valuable, and I can't stand to wait 15 to 20 minutes after my scheduled time for my haircut to start. One time, after 20 minutes of telling me my stylist was almost done, they told me that he wasn't going to be able to cut my hair. I canceled my membership the next day.  I have heard they have gotten slightly better recently, but still have heard the same complaints.

My two cents.

This review is of MR. as a private event venue only.  I called for a quote b/c I was considering this as a wedding venue.  I found out that they charge $6,000 for a half day and that it was not negotiable.

Needless to say, I found much bigger and prettier spaces for less money!

I've now been getting my hair cut at MR. on a monthly basis for about six months now, maybe a bit longer.

For the basic membership, you get (per month) a full hair cut or classic shave, one shape-up, a shoe shine, and a complimentary beer or wine when you do stop in. Unless you're the type who spends $20 on a chop, this is a great deal by any other measure.

Everyone from the owners (Kumi and Sean) to the staff (Erica, Erin, Sara, Jennifer and Brenda are some of my current faves) know their regulars by name, and the whole atmosphere is one of conviviality. It's not just a cut, it's more like a social experience that leaves you better groomed.

My advice, make your appointment on a Thursday or Friday at 4pm, and invite some friends over around 5pm to join you for happy hour. Being located in the Fi-Di, you get a surprisingly mixed after-work crowd; while haircuts and such are just for guys, anyone, member or not, can drink and socialize at MR. And while you didn't hear it from me, there sometimes is complimentary pizza on Fridays...

And in the spirit of yelping, two suggestions if I were running things:
1) Show classic films on your TVs that speak to the modern man's aesthetic, unless there is a specific game on.
2) While you have a cool internet jukebox, you can still control the music at key times. My own preference is more along the lines of the Rolling Stones to Sinatra... maybe collectively ask your regulars about their favorite music and play that?

Ok, MR. still gets a full five stars, it's just that cool of an operation not to.

I had been planning on going here for some time.  Talked to friends who had gone here and was psyched for the experience.  And so I finally got here.

As MR. is not within walking distance I had to work my way down there and park on a Friday, mid afternoon.

$17 to park in a lot 1 block away.
$1 tip leaving the car
$1 tip picking up the car

Went inside and loved my surroundings.  The masculine feel, chill bar stocked with all the beverages you need, cool juke box playing some good tunes, and the good looking ladies at the front.

These lovely ladies certainly know their job.  Be aggressively flirty, compliment you on your looks, wearables and anything else to make you smile and possible blush.  Then start talking about membership, keep talking about getting a membership, and keep flirting hard while directly asking you repeatedly, "so are you going to become a member".

I really did love the surrounding, thought it was a cool feel and enjoyed the company.

But a few things threw me.  And both were equally annoying.  And both revolve around membership.

1) I can understand mentioning a membership a time or two to a new customer.  Make them aware and then don't let them forget.  But I think I was asked or told about membership opportunities 7-8 times.  It got old real quick.  Especially as I explained that I get my hair cut every two to three months so it didn't make a ton of sense for me to get something that revolved around being groomed on a monthly basis.

2) I also understand that membership has its benefits and members have preferences since they pay a premium and frequent the establishment.  But man I could really feel the split inside this place between members and walk-ins.  Basically me vs. everybody else in the place in terms of the way they were treated, the service they enjoyed, etc...   While membership should include extra benefits and perks, not being a member shouldn't be a negative thing...and it came through like it was at MR.

And while the experience and atmosphere were great, new, and unlike any other place I have gotten my haircut, I do like to get a nice haircut.  And I would rate the haircut experience as extremely average, with the head wash and massage as the best part of the hair cut experience.

$66 - 1 red stripe and a hair cut
$12 tip

$97 for a so so experience and a so so haircut is not something I am looking to repeat anytime soon.

I was really expecting more from this experience, but the whole membership thing (both being sold over and over and over, and the feeling of being a have not versus all the haves got a little annoying real quick) was too desperate, too apparent, and too much.

I'm assuming that anybody complaining about this place is accustomed to their grandmother cutting their hair with a floowbie, or their neighborhood SuperCuts.

For the same price I once paid for a sometimes unreliable haircut and a tip, I now get an EXCELLENT hair cut, a trim, a shoe shine, hospitality, and best of all....alcohol. The place is void of douchebaggery, doesn't feel stuffy, and is way more inviting than the sterile and pretentious salons that compete with the same expertise level as MR.
The staff is friendly and they listen to you; no stylists with huge egos, here. I'm also a big fan of being able to book via the internet.

I've hooked up a few of my friends here, as well as trying to get my buds in PR to assist in spreading the word about this place; that's how much confidence I have in it.

My one wish for the place is that they had a full liquor license; I'm more keen on gin or other hard liquor than beer or wine. Regardless, I'm hooked, and they've def won me over.

I used to go to Vidal Sassoon. I paid $75.00 a visit, plus a tip for my hair. I was always happy, but always feeling like I paid a little bit too much.

When I found Mr., I was getting my hair cut every six months, looking very shabby, and found that I really love the concept.

I pay $65.00 a month, I get a hair cut, drinks at the bar, a shampoo, and a head massage. They all know my name and I sometimes know theres.

I get many stylists, but that's what I was doing before that. I have never had an unever cut or something crazy. I have always left feeling satisfied with Mr.

If I were unsatisfied, even slightly, I would quit the membership. If you are not happy, quit. There is not a set amount of time to be on the plan and I love the concept.

Think about it, they have a full bar and people to cut your hair. You are not rushed and it is in the Financial District.

The turnover is a little high there, I will not deny that, but I have always felt comfortable and satisfied with the money spent.

I don't think the idea of this place is to get a fabulous cheap haircut on the run.  The idea is to pay a bit more for the ambiance, the location, AND THE DRINKS.  Its a great concept and if I got buzzed cuts I'd come here for sure over the $5 dollar haircuts in Chinatown.  I came here after dinner on a Saturday evening and there was a fund raising event which I found quite noble.  I sort of HATE small tiny places like this cause if theres more than 10 people you feel totally packed.  The bar is hard to get to as well.  Eh, unless I was in the 'hood I wouldnt go out of my way to come here.  I did leave my CC here and they were great about keeping it safe!

***THIS REVIEW IS COMING FROM A GIRL AND IS ONLY REVIEWING THE LOUNGE/BAR AREA***
Ok this might be THE place for men, especially to get a haircut. But if you're a woman, go somewhere else to get a drink.
I was invited by a co-worker to have drinks and watch the game here. It was pretty packed the Friday afternoon I went.
Only a beer and wine bar which is okay. But expect to pay about $12+ for a glass of wine.
But I have to admit, I got hit on A LOT!

I've been a member at MR. for a few months now and overall I really enjoy it. I get my haircut by Curtis who is great and all of the staff is really friendly.

It's pretty hard to find a barber or stylist that can work with Black hair in SF, not surprisingly, and with my busy work/social schedule it's nearly impossible for me to make it over to the Fillmore or Divisadero on a regular basis before the shops close. So having MR. a 5 min walk from my office is great.

My only issue with the establishment is their lack of organization... I've been misbilled twice now and have had some scheduling issues. The first time a random charge from them showed up on my account, I called to inquire and the charge was reversed a week or so later. I haven't bothered looking into the second charge because it was so small, but it's still alarming to see a charge on my account that I am unaware of.

MR. also has a policy of charging you if you miss appointments, which I am fine with as I understand that missed appointments hurt business. However; I've had my appointments annotated on the wrong dates and still received confirmation emails after appoints have been cancelled, which forces me to spend time following up on these emails to ensure that I am not billed for a cancelled appointment that was actually misscheduled in the first place.

But beside for their administrative issues they offer an excellent service and I will be a loyal customer for a long time to come.

I've reached a temporary detente with MR.  Partly because my most recent haircut was so good, two straight guys complimented me on it in one day.  Plus, they gave me a bottle of champagne to compensate for screwing things up last time.  My typical response to these sorts of things is, I don't want money, I just want you to get it right.  But, as of late, the more lawyerly side of my brain has started to remind me that people do screw up, and when that happens, usually the best they can offer you is money.  It's certainly better than nothing!

So, we'll see what happens.

uh huh...SO... I got one of these Facebook ads (you know the ones on the right hand margin that you can rate) well unfortunately I clicked on it. arhhhggg.

So I show up to MR. Before I go any further, may I preface this with V. Dell, Erika and Taralyn are really nice people and I wouldn't mind sharing a pint with any of them.

BUT my hair got BUTCHERED. Wet, it looked fine but once I got home it is

a. Lop sided, that's right, one side is longer than the other.
b. he cut my side tendrils clean OFF, think 1950's Hoffa style
c. the shave, HAHAHA, it was an electric Relco like razor that left so much stubble I had to re-shave once I came home.
d. he drenched me in a talc that reeked of someone's father or dbag marina dudes.

There was no hard pressure sales pitch but there was a sales pitch which I expected for a complementary visit but there is no need. The level of skill is not worth the membership fee of $65 a month!!  I will never go back to this place.

The end. Gents, dont think about it.

Damn, this place got its act together. I called Angelica, the GM, to see if I could have a happy hour here next month. She quickly sends me a link to a surveymonkey-like form.  I fill it out.  She emails me back saying they're booked that date, but willing to look at other dates.  I say no cuz we gotta have it that night. Whole transaction took 10 minutes tops. Quick. Professional. On it.

I've been at quite of number of happy hours and other functions here.  Great customer service, reasonable prices and an outstanding location in the Financial District.

Loving the hot and cold reviews for this place.   Always get a kick out of the extreme polarized hatred that SF folks seem to feel.  Whatever you guys do, DO NOT chill out.  I need the entertainment.

Stopped by here for the Yelp event and thought the place was interesting.  If only because it is literally half a block from my office, I can definitely see stopping in here for a beer.

Got a free trim and a shoeshine and left thinking I would sign up for the basic membership for $65.  Only thing holding me back is the fact that I probably get a haircut once every 3 or 4 months and it costs $12.  Now I'm no high-rolling finance hot-shot, but that seems steep.  But ... I am also irresponsible with money.

So please, everyone in yelp land, help me decide.  On the one hand I could pony-up, get a haircut every month and (attempt) to look like a professional.  On the other hand I might risk a decline in lovely comments such as the following:

(true quotes from the last 3 months, only a sample)

1.  "Where are you from and does everyone there have mullets?"

2.  "Brad, you don't look like a lawyer, you look like a clown."

3.  "Starting at point guard out of Colgate University, at 5'9", 6' with fro..."

4.  "I really would, but I seem to have lost my number.  Maybe its in your hair somewhere."

5.  "You are hot, can I shave your head?"

04/03/2007

*** UPDATE 4/30/08 ***

Was given a membership here for my bday and have now had two months to test the results in the field.  I think the haircuts here are good, the service and friendliness even better.  Love the shoeshine as well.  its pricey, but you get a lot of "bangs" for your buck.  :)

I have not, however, noticed any decline in comments such as the ones above.   My most recent fave:

"Cool hat!  What animal is it made from?"

In all honesty, my mop has been much improved.  But what keeps me going back here are the ambiance and people.  So 6 whopping stars to all the folks working over at Mr.  Especially the ones who are "Ms."
