If your debating if you should go to chopsticks then stop it now and drop whatever you're doing and go now!!!! in fact just run there! they have tasty drinks to quench your thirst -

When you live in the Denton area you're going to hear about Mr. Chopsticks. It has a great college feel to it because it's so close to the school and they hire kids that look like they're in Denton because Austin is too mainstream.
To say this place is hipster is a huge understatement. I felt like they should hand out horn rimmed glasses and newsboy hats at the door and hang a sign that reads "No plaid shirt, No skinny jeans, No service". Not to say the service was bad, it's just a laid back experience. And a good one!
The menu was huge. They cover everything from stir-fry to sushi to pho to traditional Chinese take-out dishes. They also have a great sake and beer selection.
Molly ordered the Pad Kee Mao combo and thought it was comparable to some of the better Thai dishes around town. We ordered a steamed spring roll, a fried spring roll, crab rangoon as appetizers. The steamed spring roll was chewy so that didn't make the cut. But that was the only negative thing about the meal. The crab rangoon was awesome. They use a really thin wonton making it super crispy.
We thought we would try the sushi and I'd never heard of a Calapeño Roll so we gave that a shot. It's an inside out roll with crab, jalapeño and cream cheese. The sushi rice was cooked well and I'd say we'll be back to try more from that part of the menu soon.
For my entree I ordered the Seafood Egg Noodle soup. The menu lists this as, "Egg noodle, shrimp, imitation crabmeat, fish/shrimp balls, bean sprouts, broccoli, snow peas, cabbage, scallion, garlic oil & cilantro in clear broth". I asked them to make it spicy. I would get this again.
The real factor here is that it's good and cheap. It's not as good as the best of some places at anything but it's as good as some at everything - especially at the price. -

I adore this place! I never eat anywhere else when I'm in the 'ol Dentron. It always seems to be bustling when I come in, so that's always a good sign. The pad thai with tofu is my top favorite. It's different than anywhere else, and very sweet and still savory. It is to die for! Order the tofu fried, not soft. I think its better that way.
What i like is that this is not your run of the mill Asian take-out restaurant in a strip mall. The quality is better here and the food has great flavor for a sit down restaurant with a fast food feel.
The portion is huge, I always take half home and have it for lunch the next day. Its a little bit cheaper than other places, I usually pay $9-10 for a good pad thai, but here it's only $8 and I really feel full and have leftovers as well! The flavor is unique and quite yummy.
The summer rolls are lovely also. Not filled with wilty veggies like some places. Very prettily rolled with care. A nice touch.
I've also had the yellowfin tuna chirashi zushi. It is very very tasty and $5-6 cheaper than other places, yet Mr Chopsticks still uses a nice quality fish. Major thumbs up here. If I've just gotten paid and can splurge a little, I'll get this tasty bowl.
The service is also top notch. Though just about everyone who works here looks to be college age like myself, they're all great servers/bussers and are all around awesome. Everyone always looks busy. The place isn't dirty, and they work hard and I always try and tip them well when I come in. The food comes out faster than you'd think. Even if it's busy, the food comes out in 10 minutes max. Impressive.
Mr Chopsticks gets my vote for best eats in Denton! -
Review from Reba G.
I love everything about this restaurant as it caters to the college students as it is located right in the middle of 2 big colleges. They serve everything from pho to springs rolls to fresh sushi to brown/steamed/fried rice with chicken, tofu, mongolian beef/chicken or even sauteed vegetables. I tried the mongolian beef(spicy) with brown rice, and I left nothing on the plate. I must have been hungry. Everything about this restaurant is made fresh, and it's delicious. Whatever you are in the mood for, you will not be disappointed.

I get that it makes people feel intelligent/chic/cultured to call a Chinese restaurant "Americanized" but from my experience in China (I had some of the best examples of Chinese cuisine during my extended tour overseas), there's absolutely nothing wrong with "Americanized" Chinese food. In China, you'd be hard-pressed to eat anything but fatty dark meats. I could rant about this for ages, but I won't. Let me write my little love letter to Chopsticks.
If you're a fan of spring rolls, this is the crème de la crème. Order them fried. They're light and crispy with a yummy carrot sauce on the side. The dish I consistently order is the teriyaki grilled chicken. It comes with a pile of fresh steamed veggies and a mound of rice. Everything here looks amazing. Coming with a group is magical. The food is so cute when it fills up an entire table - like a scene from a Miyazaki movie. The fried green beans are amazing! Order some edamame, too.
The interior has a humble college dive vibe, but in a good way. There's nothing kitschy about the decor. You get what you see. I've only had the friendliest of servers here, but that's probably because I treat others like I would hope to be treated. If you're a snob, maybe this isn't the place for you. If you want savory Asian food that fills you up (without bloating) then give them an earnest shot. -

Ok, here Is the deal with Chopsticks:
You are in a town with two large colleges and a huuuuuge art and music scene. People here like greazy, Americanized food, and yes, your waiter is probably hung over. If you can't handle that, drive to Royal Lane in Dallas, where I'm sure that Ling Han, or whoever, will serve you a very authentic Chinese meal and kiss your ass.
That being said, having lived here for over ten years, I'd have to say for the price, Chopsticks is one of the best Asian style places in town.
Their sushi is good, not great, but better than most in town, and not expensive at all. Most of their Asian dishes are good, and while they are Americanized, the portions are huge enough to split.
I have never had rude or ungracious service. They are a busy restaurant, so yes, you may have to wait more than 5 minutes for your food.
I recommend the pad Thai with chicken and a side of fried rice. My hubby and I split this all the time. Or the shrimp sukiyaki. Also, this is one of the few places in town where a vegan can be satisfied.
Oh, btw, the owners are Chinese. They are purposefully catering to American college students, and succeeding.
I've never left unhappy, but then again, I'm not pretentious either... -

I hated this place.....the egg drop soup was soso, out chicken coconut soup was nasty...so we sent it back, and the sesame chicken was way over cooked and we told our waitress we didn't like that either. So we ate basically nothing and told her we liked nothing. She said the owner agreed to take the soup off our bill....gee thanks.
We paid $19 to drink pir Dr. peppers and we left and ate at Wingstop.
Terrible food....terrible that we had tonpay for food we didn't like. -

I fell in love here. Both with the food and with my husband. We would meet here many times a week for lunch after class. Then it turned in to date night dinners. This is the perfect cheap, casual place with genuinely good food. Awesome Asian beer selection too! They offer so many veggie options, the tempura is to die for.
You have to try it! -

This place is definitely worth the money. The egg drop soup is too die for, the absolute best I have ever had and the crab rangoon are made in house. Not many places can say the same. The ginger vegetables are great as well.
Overall, a great place for asian meals in Denton! -
Review from Dana C.
I visited Mr. Chopsticks with some friends who used to live in Denton and they RAVE about this place. Upon this visit, they said that it didn't taste like the same Mr. Chopsticks of old, but it was still really good in my opinion.
I had a Sapporo and the Chirashi with shrimp. I'm pretty used to Chirashi coming with all different cuts of fish, but just choosing one guaranteed me that I wouldn't gorge myself. The Chriashi came with Miso soup, too. Their portions are pretty large so I'm glad they make you pick only one kind of fish. The Chirashi was accompanied by seaweed, pickled ginger that was not dyed pink :) and sesame sticky rice.
My friends let me try their dinners, too. The lettuce cups are wonderfully seasoned and minced nicely. The tofu is very firm... probably some of the best I've had in the area. The chicken egg rolls were really fresh and crispy. I tried sparkling sake for the first time and it was pretty good, too!
Beer and entree = $14. Not bad! -

I'm not picky at all, and I just cannot find anything i like here. My good friend likes this place so we visit often, and I've searched the menu high and low for a dish I might like. I've even double ordered a few times to make sure I would have something to eat that my taste buds agreed with. No luck. I now refuse to eat here. The food quality and taste is just horrible. They water down the soy sauce they keep at the tables for crying out loud! ...that should give you some insight as to the quality of food they offer. Gross. Really, really gross.

Americanized
if i only can describe this place in a word.
I don't know why this place will have average 3.5... This place is a Chinese restaurant but only for Americans( this is the only reason I can understand how they get 3.5) the service is just ok. they are kind of busy if out side is not too hard, most of time they outdoor seating is half full.
Chinese food + Thai + Jap+ America style ..
I had chicken egg roll/ Fried Wontons/ Kung Pao chicken. the only thing i can do is SMILE because my American friends from church were so excited about showing me how great the food is. the food didnt make me sick, but it is not so enjoyable meal.
they love it, but I don't. -

I know it would be cool to rag on Mr. Chopsticks, but you know what..I actually find myself liking this place. I just moved to Denton from Boston, Ma, and so am trying to find a non-smoking place where I can be a regular, since I'm missing my old haunts.
I know it's kind of dirty, and so are the wait staff but you know what, no one has blown smoke in my face and every time the server has been more than nice. People complain that it's not authentic asian food, but every immigrant to this country has assimilated, you want authentic go to asia, if you want a laid back, no frills neighborhood place where you can grab some steamed tofu and a Sapporo in your paint splattered jeans, then this is the place for you.
Also, best Spicy Tuna roll i've ever had...ever.. -

I love this place. I love everything about it. The vibe is relaxed. Very denton-esque. And the staff is very chill. The food is always delicious. If you're looking for your run-of-the-mill chinese or thai joint, this isn't it. Its an interesting fusion of chinese, thai, and indian that works for me every time.
One of my favorite places to eat in denton.

Sometimes its hard to find places nearby that will accommodate vegans. I gave Mr. Chopsticks a try yesterday and it did not disappoint.
I started with tofu lettuce wraps. I was a little disturbed by the way they plated it. It looked like a big square scoop of slop. But once I dug into it, it was really delicious.
Next, pad thai and pad kee mow with tofu and veggies. The pad thai wasn't my favorite...very peanuty. But my dining partner seemed to dig it. The pad kee mow looked different than I've ever seen before. It was really dark and the rice noodles were thicker than normal. Overall it had a good flavor and I'm planning on eating my leftovers today for lunch.
Chopsticks is clean and has a nice patio area. The service was excellent. The bill was about 32 bucks for 4 imported beers, 2 apps, and 2 entrees. Really, pretty cheap. They accommodated all extra vegan requests like no eggs in the Thai dishes. Now that I live in Denton, I will probably be a regular here. -

i first tried mr chopsticks with my sister, a unt student. it's definitely a college spot. on a saturday night, my husband and i stopped in and the crowd had some variety with families and older couples.
we started off with the wonton soup, which was entree sized. it was pretty tasty. the pork wontons were delicious but the broth was a little too fish saucy. i ordered the pad see ew and my husband ordered the bbq pork fried rice. i've had better, more authentic pad see ew. but my picky husband loved the fried rice and i agreed.
the service was prompt during the busy dinner time. we wouldn't drive 30 minutes out of our way for mr chopsticks, but it is a strong contender when we're in denton. -

I'm not sure if i like this place or not. Here's my list........
1.) Food is ok nothing special but I like it every once in a while.
2.) Staff ALWAYS looks like the need massive showers and smell. Sorry but when you look grungy I'm not sure I want you serving my food.
3.) Pretty pricey for the amount of food.
4.) Service again isn't great, slow and just very exasperated.
Will not make a special trip here! -

The fact that there is a veg*n restaurant in the Denton area is pretty much 3 stars already. And the fact that it was pretty good is another added star.
The menu was very veg*n friendly and usually eating out causes me a lot of stress due to not knowing what the hell is actually going into my food and I've had way too many food scares in the past to not care. ...No stress @ Mr. Chopsticks. The waiter, when I asked, explained to me exactly what was going into my Basil Tofu dish. He was very patient, efficient and accommodating. The food was yummy and the tofu perfectly fried. :)
The restaurant's cleanliness could've used some work though. Like, there was food under a table that could have been easily swept up by one of the employees not doing anything. There weren't whole pieces of food on the floor like one reviewer mentioned - that was probably an exaggeration on her part because she was unhappy with her experience. Do not let the bad reviews sway you from trying this place. I almost did but glad I didn't.
The best part?? It works on a student's budget. YEAH!!!!! -
Review from Gwan C.
This place is SICK, and not in a good way.
I've always grew up eating Chinese food because of my culture and when I was craving it, this was the place that popped into my head. I did have this biased opinion coming into the restaurant. I expected the food to be Americanized, Panda Express-ish, and not true authentic Chinese food. However, when I got my food, I did not prepare myself for what I was about to eat.
I ordered Kung Pao Chicken. The sauce was a hot mess, watered down, and bland. My friend ordered Chicken and Broccoli and the broccoli looked like it was just steamed, tossed around in a wok for a bit, and served. Maybe I came in on an off day but off days should never taste like this. I rarely waste food but I just couldn't finish my plate.
Service was alright.
I feel for family owned businesses but I just had to put in my two cents. I am still in search for a decent Chinese restaurant in Denton.. -

This place never fails to please my hungry tummy! We went today while in our old stomping ground for a few hours. Sadly, the Beef Thai Salad was not playing it's A-game today. I like it SPICY and it was tasty, but no hotness :(
The chicken egg rolls are fantastic as are the steamed veggie pot stickers. I believe some items have slipped over the years, but it is still tasty overall. And the staff are usually prompt (for Denton standards). Good prices also, for college kids and people losing money in the stock market :P
I heard a long time ago that the new Mr. Chopsticks house would be reconstructed next door to Lucky Lou's...but it's been so long, I'm sure the plans have changed. -

Normally, I wouldn't have ravaged Chopsticks so bad, but the last two times I went were so terrible it knocked it right into the "crap" leagues. Read my review for "Suck-O-Thai" and I think that, sadly, it will pretty much sum up this place, too:
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
To be a little more descriptive, Chopsticks is Filthy, Filthy, Dirty--and not in a "fun" way. More like in a "homeless-and-covered-in-feces" kinda way. Think "Ratzo Rizzo goes to Mexico's Chinatown" and you're getting warmer.
The tables are never wiped clean, there's half-eaten food all over the floor (no joke), and I just sat in some slob's dribbled sweet 'n' sour sauce. Shit!
I tried to quit acting like a bitch for two seconds and play along to be polite the last time I went, but I had vowed (after the tenth time of being dragged there) I'd NEVER go back. NEVAAHH!
Well, here I am, and Welcome to Denton.
I tried their curry, and this was a HUGE MISTAKE.
Chopsticks has the worst curry this side of a Bangkok ghetto. It was literally like SLOP, oozing over the side of the plate. It tasted like canned gravy, and the spices were.."weird".. And no, dammit, not "fun" weird. It even gets worse, cos the service straight-up sucks. I could've sent it back to the kitchen through the friggin' MAIL faster. (Here's a friendly "waiter" tip: Just cos we're acquaintances and you're waiting on me, does NOT mean that I deserve to be treated differently than other customers. Don't make me sit and wait twenty minutes for a check just so you can go smoke.)
Think I'm being mean? Well, I will continue to remain a bitch so long as I don't have to eat like a shivering junkie with worms.
I wouldn't serve this crap to a starving dog, let alone a buncha starving semi-collegiate 19-year olds with grown-up hangovers and Camel Light-singed tastebuds.
But, the kids seem to love it, so "Bon appetit", Denton!
The rest of you need to go to Thai Ocha! It's clean, the food is great, and they know how to treat their customers.

Yes, this place has had its handful of "misses" over the years, but has definitely scored more hits with me. I moved out of Denton almost two years ago, and I can't help but miss Mr. Chopsticks, as there is NO good Chinese food in my new college town.
One of my favorite things about Mr. Chopsticks is the porch. If it's a nice day, that is the place to be. With a glass of iced Thai tea, some steamed spring rolls, and sesame chicken, I'd be a happy camper. The menu is huge and most of the vegetarian dishes are good. It would probably serve Chopsticks well to shrink the menu and focus on what they do right, but one of the things I love about this place is that a group of people can go and everyone finds something they want to order.
The sushi is moderately priced, and in my experience, the servers are pretty good at letting you know what's freshest. This is a huge plus! Every now and then, you get a lame server, but typically they don't stick around too long. In my experience, most of them have been really friendly.
It's biggest downfall is inconsistency of service. It can be super slow at times, even when that seems ridiculous, and I've definitely sat at some less-than-clean tables. But the food is good and worth going for-- give Chopsticks a chance! -

I have mixed feelings about Mr. Chopsticks, Denton's hipster staple for chinese food. I like their super-sweet Thai-tea, their service and their vegetarian options, but it always takes them forever to make the food. And sometimes it seems like they skimp on ingredients or spices.
If you go be sure to avoid the rude Pringles-mustached waiter. He laughed at me once when I accidently knocked over a plant and expressed his disgust in having to sweep up the mess.Listed in: My favorite places in Denton,…

I love Mr. Chopsticks. Now don't get all weepy on me, whining about not getting your favorite chicken legs or sweet and sour pork here, folks. It's a fusion place, just roll with it.
Some knockouts: the sesame vegetables- big chunks of tasty veggies, including okra! In a light tasty sauce. The vegetable tempura dinner has a cornucopia of fresh crisp vegetables, even green beans, all served up in a spicy garlicky sauce. The vegetable dumplings are light and expertly prepared. Do you guys think I'm a vegetable freak yet? Yeah, well, I am. So? Vegetables just have so much more to offer than meat. Not that I wouldn't turn down a good steak, but that's another review...
My only complaint is the rice could be a little better in quality and preparation.
Service can be a bit spotty, but it's apathetic college kids, what do you expect? -

This place is pretty great overall.. huge huge portions
i would avoid the sushi and the soups, and just stick to the regular entrees- the sushi just doesn't compare to what you can get at other places nowadays
all of the other dishes are outstanding... too many to talk about here
we had the spinach salad as well.... perfect, even enough as an entire meal -

While not traditional Asian food, the food is still great. I've worked myself into a routine at Chopsticks and almost always go with the General Tso's Chicken (Level III spicy). If you're a fan of spicing up your food, like I am, then be sure to let them know you want it spicier. Without letting the waiter know you'll get the least spicy option, but you can ask for levels 2 and 3 as well.
Just don't go to Chopsticks expecting the ordinary, it's more of an Asian fusion type experience and, while being different than the usual, is good in its own way. -

I am saddened to see all the lackuster (or bad) reviews! I eat here frequently and used to frequent the old location in my undergrad years. I have never had a bad experience...food-wise. There have been a few spotty service experiences. I love the spicy mixed vegetables and tofu and also the sesame tofu and veggies rock! Even my family is addicted now and insist we eat there when they're here.
So...Mr. Chopsticks is awesome! -

If you are looking for decent Pan-Asian-influenced cuisine with some great vegan options for a decent price near campus , then Mr. Chopsticks is the way to go. You can order it by the phone and pick it up through the drive-thru if you are pressed for time.
The option for brown rice or noodles with any meal is refreshing. I like how you get okra with your Sesame chicken. The appetizer selection ain't bad, either.
DON'T: Be health-conscious (most meat is breaded/fried), expect authentic cuisine, or order the sushi.
DO: Give yourself extra time (it's usually packed), be nice to your servers even though they are probably jerks, and like veggies. -

I used to come here all the time in my salad days. I went back recently and it just wasn't the same. I have to admit that part of my problem is that the new former China One Wok location just isn't as cool as the old house.
I got the sesame tofu and it wasn't as flavorful as I remembered, and the Thai tea was too sweet. But it was still good. The spring rolls are still excellent.
Perhaps nothing is as good as we remember that it was. -

Oh Mr. Chopsticks....
When you do it good, you do it really good. However, my last few visits here have been, well, rather terrifying.
I eventually got over the maggot in my take-out edamame (yes, I love you enough to put this aside and eat at your place again), and then I tried a dish that made me extremely grossed out. I blame that on myself I mean, sushi covered in "smelt mayo" should have been the first cue, right? And then this last time you messed up our take-out and I got really, really sick after eating my dish.
I'm willing to at least give you 2 stars, and consider changing my review in the future, because you have an amazing rainbow roll. It's on par with some of the specialty sushi restaurants I've visited. Also, the staff is always friendly and does a great job.
Please don't fall apart, hang in there guys! I will continue to dine at your place, but I will probably just stick to the rainbow roll this time. -

Mr. Chopsticks is not crazy gourmet. I think of it as the Asian equivalent of a really good neighborhood deli or pizza joint. I love eating here because I've been eating here for years, I am familiar with the staff, and I see my friends there all the time.
Not all of the food is incredible, but it is all at least pretty good. Some of the selections - like the pho, for instance, or the pad thai - are as good as you would find at a more specialized restaurant of comparable quality. The service at Chopsticks is usually quite good.
I think people that complain about the sushi here have unrealistic expectations, or maybe have developed a more refined sushi palette than Chopsticks or any local non-specialty, non-gourmet place can deliver. This is like a Level 2 Sommelier complaining about the house wine at Olive Garden. Stop being a jerkhammer.
The recent expansions have done a lot of class the place up.
People give Chopsticks bad reviews because they think it is something other than what it really is. Chopsticks is a pretty good, totally local restaurant that is fun to go to with a bunch of friends. If you think it is something other than that or expect something more, you'll be disappointed. But then again, you probably feel that way all the time, so what's new? -
