My name is Angela...and I have curly/wavy hair.  *sigh*

I heard good things about Amanda...I was not disappointed!  She did a dry cut, and knew exactly how to deal with my hair - NO SHAMPOO!  She styled my hair almost exactly how I do (except for dinking around with a diffuser, I just usually let that shit air dry) instead of trying to use a curling iron (wtf, random salon lady I don't remember?!?!) or worse, a flat iron (ughhhhhhhhh).

Highly recommend her for curly/wavy girls (and guys!).  She has lots of good advice, is really personable, but doesn't force you to chat all the way through the cut...I'm not a super talkative person at the end of the day, so that was nice.  Free bang trims...yada yada.  I'm planning on going back...my hair looks awesome!

Also...they give you a face towel and a scalp massage....oh man, so amazing.  Seriously, it was worth what I paid, for sure.

Warning: this review is for curly-haired gals.

Although they have a stylist who was trained in the curly-girl ways, I left my haircut feeling really disappointed. Clearly they just don't get enough practice with curly hair! I came back and saw several long strands (approximately 2-3 inches longer than the rest). How do you miss that?

Not the worst haircut in the world, but I'm still waiting for it to grow out...

Moxie did an amazing job for my wedding. Love, love, LOVE Moxie. Seriously, if I wasn't already married, I would make an honest woman out of this salon.

Even though my group included women of all ages, styles and temperaments, everyone left looking great and age-appropriate. I say this because the moms and grandma hesitated at first, upon seeing the stylists who were younger and edgier than what they are used to. Whatever pause they had quickly dissipated. Everyone helping us was professional and friendly. My mom was initially unsure of her up-do, and even though it looked great, she opted to come back to get something different. A stylist gave her a new, just as awesome look, at no charge. So nice.

Maria did my hair. She gave me an off-center messy bun that looked like it took hours to strategically place each chunk of hair. She was super chill and had me in and out in about 20 minutes. She made sure to spray my hair to within an inch of its life, and I'm glad she did since it was pretty windy for most of the afternoon/evening. I got tons of compliments on it, and was sad to take it out. And my head was surprisingly comfortable given how many pins were in it.

I can't remember who did my makeup, but she also did a great job. She asked me what kind of overall look I was going for, and then got to work. I've never had my makeup done before, so I wasn't sure how specific to be about what I wanted. I said I wanted a smoky eye and then just let her do her thing. Everything stayed on through the end of the night, the only thing I had to reapply was lip gloss.

We were there for just under two hours, which is pretty amazing considering there were eight of us and most of got makeup done as well. We had only scheduled one person for makeup, but they were happy to do a few more on like 10 minutes notice.

I experienced none of the problems that Abby A. encountered with setting up the appointments. Maybe she was dealing w/ a new person? I suggest trying to coordinate through John, he was on top of everything and got me set up in no time. Ask to come in for a consultation ahead of time to try different styles - it makes things go much smoother day-of.

Highly recommend.

I've waited since last summer to write this review, mainly because I thought I'd go back and didn't want to have my not-so-great review cause someone to take revenge out on my hair. I've finally admitted to myself that I'm just not going back.

First of all, the little head/face massage thing they do creeps me out.  I have a problem with complete strangers touching me in any way, and massaging my head is like, 2 steps away from having sex in my book.  I had to refuse a few times before the junior stylist finally admitted defeat.

I'm definitely not one of those people who is totally obsessive about their hair. I've had bad hair cuts in my day, but I know it's just hair and it will grow back, so I'm pretty easy to please.  I always, always let this be known at the beginning of a hair cut because I think it's important to establish that I'm not some raging lunatic who will kill if they cut off an inch instead of 1/2 an inch. I mean, who doesn't like a laid back customer?  The stylist had apparently been working double shift and she endlessly complained about it.  I don't care about the complaining, it just grew to be a bit unnerving to hear someone talk about how exhausted they were when they have scissors right next to my head.  I even caught her closing her eyes a few times.

I basically walked out looking like a 60s era member of the Beatles. I looked cute, but it's not a hair cut my boyfriend hasn't given me in our bathroom before (yes, my cooks-for-a-living boyfriend and he doesn't charge.)

If it says anything, I'm sticking to the Great Clips at Southtown.

just moved to MN and decided to get my first in state hair cut at moxie...as well as my first real hair cut in about 3 years. nicole cut my hair and did a great job! ended up taking about six inches off, which kind of felt like cutting off a limb, but i'm so glad i did it. it looks fantastic, and the entire experience was really great.

Micah, thank you for saving me from my grown out, shapeless hair. I love my stylish new 'do!  It is the perfect balance between fun and professional.  I really appreciate that you listened to what I liked and disliked before cutting it.  It is exactly what I wanted and I didn't even need to bring in photos or explain anything.

Contrary to other reviews the "thank-you" post card is not a fluke.  I got my cut by a well-established stylist - Micah and received a hand-written post card thanking me for my business and even adding in a personal note, referencing things we talked about.  This was NOT just a generic "thank you" and what great customer service!  I will be back.

The cut was great and reasonable ($40) compared to other high-end/funky salons I have been to in the past with a stylist of this calibur.

Still a fan, nothing has changed.
Just wanted to let you know the same greatness I told you about before, is still going on, just in a fresh new space.

If you didn't know, Moxie Uptown was going through renovations. Not sure for how long, but it was under construction from the time I first went there in July. Construction is now done and it is a wonderful looking space filled with bright lights, bright colors, art and the same great people. Give it a shot now if you have yet to.

This is only for those of you looking for updo's...

I tried to book a wedding party here last summer...wow, what a disaster. The first time I called, I spoke with a pleasant young woman who gave me the times, prices, names of the stylists..basically the whole run down for the day of the wedding. Great, perfect, check that off the list.

Then I got a phone call a month later from another girl who said not only did we need to put down a payment (no biggie) but that we were to be booked under a "wedding special package" aka, MUCH more than the original quote. This was a month before the wedding, fyi. She argued with me and said she was the "only receptionist" (oh really..?) and didn't know who I talked to. I told her I would like to cancel our appointments and look elsewhere. Okay, fine by her.

Then I got a phone call from the owner who left a message saying he wanted to confirm my cancellation. Nice of him to follow up, I thought. I returned the phone call and because he was not in, left a message.

I won't bore you, but after that last phone call to Moxie I received FOUR additional phone calls over a two week span from the aforementioned snotty receptionist, every time asking for my down payment. Seriously...?!? Major breakdown in communication somewhere down the line...

Prices are good, but get them in writing first. :) Kidding, but I recommend Sa Bel in Uptown instead...great atmosphere, excellent staff...brides should book Ciara for a great 'do!

I was never both stylist and salon-loyal until Moxie.  My love affair with Moxie started with a great cut, that somehow made my limp, wavy hair look fantastic.  A couple years later, with a newly blonde pixie cut in tow, I'm still happy and still with my same great stylist.

The staff is friendly and you can almost always get in within a few days.  They have tons of great inspiration books... and they're currently undergoing a huge renovation that should be complete by September 08.  The renovation is giving them a new, bigger and more serene hair washing station... but still maintaining their edge by keeping the Craftsman consoles.

Moxie looks a little funky in terms of decor, clientele and their website, however you can definitely get "normal" hair cuts & color there.  I recommend it to everyone, and can count 3 of my recommendees as Moxie loyalists.

Great designs around the back and sides of the skull.  If you have curly hair or an afro I do not recommend this place.  I prefer a softer cut and all three stylists I tried insisted on using clippers instead of shears.

I did enjoy the warm towel and scalp massage -the people were great, too - but I know what I want and they did not listen.

A number of times there were unexpected costs as well.  Something really unsettling about that.

I recommend VIP hair and nail on Hennepin or Fox Den right down the road across from the Super America.  Sitka (sorry about the spelling) rocked!  Both are great with color, cuts, and a range of lengths and textures. They are also great at edgy and trendy designs.

I am always hesitant when I go to a new stylist but Jen was totally fantastic. I liked the salon atmosphere and will totally be back. I am sad that Jen left so I have to find someone else there, which having curly hair is always a crap shoot, though I have faith in the Moxie folks. The other staff is really friendly and they made me feel very welcomed!

After 24 years I have finally found a salon that I can frequent. This place rocks and it's right next to a great coffee shop (Bob's Java Hut). They have a really friendly, hip staff that always offers you tea when you walk in the door. Also, they give you (its optional) an awesome facial steamer thing while they wash your hair. Greatness! Micah is a great stylist but you really cannot go wrong with any of them.

I've never had a consistent hairdresser or salon until moxie. Both hairdressers I've had (one left for another salon) in the 2.5 years I've been going there have never disappointed me! They have a great way way of understanding your hair's quirks and give you the exact cut you've  envisioned.

Also, they're very easy-going. They don't give you a hard time for coloring your own hair, unlike every other salon. Plus the hairdressers don't start forced conversations with intrusive questions like "So do you have a boyfriend?" they actually have interesting things to talk about.

Not for the budget set at $30-45 a cut, but VERY worth the price.
My only complaint is that I wish they did brow waxing at this location.

Goddamn to I miss getting my haircut here!  I haven't had one that I've been nearly as happy with since I moved.  I loved Andi but know I would have been good with pretty much anyone there.  I always felt comfortable and got and EXCELLENT cut.  *sigh* I miss them.

Moxie specializes in edgy customized styles. The stylist I had made sure my cut was a good fit for my lifestyle and preferences. Also, Moxie is aesthetically pleasing with local art on the walls and is socially conscious with fundraisers for area charities.
