Five stars for my favorite stylist: Andi Ayers! I can't speak entirely for the salon itself; I've been there and back again over the course of over four years. I go to Andi every time and she does a fantastic job. I get compliments on my hair all the time, and I always try to give referrals, but I think most people are intimidated by my cut (it's asymmetrical, etc.). However, Andi has experience to do funky or formal, whatever the client wants that she's working with.
The salon itself is chic and edgy. Wookie does an awesome job at the front desk, and they usually have different art work up (from local artists) around the place. It can be a little intimidating if you've never been, but if you're looking for something different, this would definitely be the place to go.
holy shit! i love this place. my first hair salon in Denver!
i have very very unruly and curly hair. most stylists have a hard time dealing. not crystal, she rocked it!
i had a trim, a bang reshaping, and my hair colored.
I've got to say this is the first time i have been 100% happy with a hair do ever! crystal is truly amazing! i wish that i could have given her a better tip!
go here!!!! it's great! (and fairly priced!)
I'm writing this solely based on a brow wax...and some other choice areas on my face.
The woman who helped me was nice. The decor was eye-catching. However, I spent $35 (plus tip) over a lunch hour for a brow wax that really wasn't worth the money.
People, I'm a hairy piece of woman. Scottish ancestry. I believe the word is "hirsute." These brows take patience and finesse. They are unruly. During this waxing endeavor, there wasn't really any shaping done, and she didn't trim my eyebrows at all.
If I'm paying you that much money, I definitely shouldn't have to return to your shop and point out the several hairs you missed. Furthermore, while I appreciate you jumping to help me out since I've caught you mid-smoke break, I really think washing the smoke off your hands first before placing your fingers mere inches from my face would be a good idea. And if you point out to me that the lighting is bad near the sinks, and that's where you normally wax faces, wouldn't you go about fixing it? For $35, I'm expecting more.
The girl who helped me, like I said, was super friendly and attempted to be very accommodating. It's just that the service provided lacked. To her credit (I can't believe I'm about to say this), she did do a good job on the chin area.
If anyone wants to get me laser hair removal for my awesome chin hair for my birthday (next month), I'm all for it. Just move quickly, because I've been told that once the hair loses its pigment, I'm out of luck. And I'm not getting younger.
I have had a mixed bag when it comes to Moxie.
When I moved to Denver in early 2007, I had been visiting the same stylist in my hometown for over 4 years. She knew exactly what I wanted and had spoiled me rotten. I needed the same hip edge and advanced education to handle my unruly ginger mane.
A friend suggested Moxie. I did some research, found that most people liked the place and made an appointment.
I wasn't impressed with the parking situation but that's to be expected in an urban area. My wait was long for that first appointment, close to 45 minutes till I was seen. I didn't mind since I popped next door to the Buffalo Exchange but I did think it was odd. The design was edgy and most of the stylists were around their late twenties to early thirties.
My haircut that time was great. A stylist no longer with the company did a great job with the cut. Subsequent visits had varying levels of customer service but I was all in all satisfied and never had a bad haircut.
My boyfriend scheduled a few appointments and was also happy with his hair. We usually had to wait an inordinate amount of time for our appointment, 15-30 minutes, but we always used the time to peruse the Buffalo Exchange.
Then came our two disasters that permanently put us off Moxie.
The first was mine. I needed a haircut a week before a big dance event. I took a risk and scheduled an appointment with an unknown-to-me stylist. I told her to leave the length and keep the layers. It was my fault that I didn't watch her more closely. By the time I realized that 6 inch strands of my hair were landing on my lap, it was too late. She had cut my medium-long hair into a chin level bob, destroying all my layers and years of growth. I stared at my reflection and blurted, "What part of 'leave the length' didn't you understand?" She was offended and left me to get out of the chair myself and go to the receptionist. I was so upset that I just paid and left. In hindsight, I wouldn't have paid and would have spoken to a manager immediately.
My boyfriend's disaster came about a month later. He asked to get a cut and highlight. I'm not sure if he got the same person I did before but his color was awful. Instead of even, natural looking highlights, his color came out like a child scribbled on his head with a pink magic marker. The shade was all wrong. He asked for the stylist to change it. The response he got was frustration, annoyance and an inability to achieve the results he asked for. He left very disappointed with horrid red blotches all over his head. We had to re-dye his hair when he got home.
Moxie seems to be a hit or miss. It can be a great place but I prefer not to solicit a business with sketchy staff, unskilled in customer service or styling techniques.
This place is great, and Andi is so excellent in particular (she's the only one I will let touch my hair now). Kinda expensive but oh so worth it. I tell her to just kinda go nuts, I will give her some guidelines but pretty much let her do her thing and I've never felt so gorgeous as I do walkin' outta there. The place is funky and cool, and I just love it. Check it out!!
I probably won't go back to Moxie. I had heard really good things about it but my experience was nothing great. The girl who cut my hair seemed really rushed and inconvenienced that I needed a haircut. I think my hair is pretty easy to cut, it's long and straight with no fancy maneuvers required. The crew is like a Betsey Johnson fashion show gone wrong. After spending $45, I felt exactly the same as I would if I was walking out of Great Clips, albeit, with a lighter wallet.
After a string of terrible haircuts, I went to Moxie yesterday for a walk-in appointment after a friend recommended I stop by and give them a try.
My stylist, MacKenzie, was not only great at cutting my hair (first decent haircut I've had in months!) but also good to talk to. Great work, great art, great environment, and good company. Love the style of the place too.
I live 123 blocks north of 13th street, but I'll be making the trip back to Moxie from here on out.
Thank you other Yelp reviewers! You helped me find this amazing hair salon. I'm new to town and don't know s**t yet, but this place was exactly what I was hoping I would find but wasn't sure I would. And Suzi - seriously the coolest stylist ever. I am now sporting kick-ass color and a rockin' new haircut (I have curly hair, so finding a great stylist is rare). I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a great hair salon.
I called Saturday afternoon to make a last minute appointment at Moxie and had no problem getting in. It was my first time trying the salon. I only knew about it from admiring its funky attitude while passing by in capitol hill. Crystal gave me a professional style that is just edgy enough. It's the place to go if you're looking for texture. And you can get a $5 discount for yelping about it-- a win/win.
But wait, why did I pay $40 (with Yelper discount) and some other yelpers paid $20?!
After remembering that I am in fact 24years old...not 40 I decided to chop off the soccer mom locks and go for a 1960's bob.
Where do all the cool kids go? Moxie I guess, right by the Buffalo Exchange in Denver.
The place is quite hip with lots of natural light, tons of magazines and a gay receptionist named....swear to God...."Wookie."
I walked in on a Saturday and because they couldn't get me in that day I got a 1/2 off coupon for my cut. Even better.
Emmy, an adorable and comfortable little lady gave me the best haircut of my life and didn't chat my ear off to boot.
stylin' salon with funky decor on 13th. perfect for the uber-hipster neighborhood of 13th st.
i've been burned by boutique salons before but Tauna was great. She was fun and knew exactly what i was looking for, while also offering her useful input. Very happy with the cut (already have received compliments today), also very happy with the price. I'll def be back to see Tauna again.
I got the WORST haircut of my life here. I would NEVER go back. It was crazy.
The butchery happened the week before Thanksgiving, when some little redheaded girl turned my awesome, slightly punky, stylish, layered haircut that just needed a trim (a trim that I've gotten successfully in - among other places - Iceland and Argentina!) into a near-perfect facsimile of Sideshow Bob.
When it was done - and I was mutely gaping at myself in the mirror, she told me the price: $20. Or something similar...something horrifyingly low. And THEN she told me there was a "money back guarantee" if I didn't like it. Say what? "Guarantee?" What were they going to give me a weave?
I skedaddled and have told anyone who'll listen the nightmare story. Trust me, every other hairstylist who's dealt with my hair in the interim has just shaken their head and "tsk tsk"ed at what a shoddy, unprofessional job this girl did. She literally hacked a giant fluffy layer-halo around my head.
I get the shakes every time I even drive by that joint; I wouldn't set foot in there for all the Bumble + Bumble in China.
Don't take the risk and drop in or make a last-minute appointment, as I have on several occasions. You will get the stylists that aren't booked up and may take great liberties depending on your attitude, their mood or the magazine they just got done reading. I've exited Moxie feeling disappointed 4 times now and I'm sick of it. Get a referral or help the yelp community with who the best hairdressers are there...(Katie O-Shay?- dj soundra review)
I love the place and the neighborhood, so I'll probably try and dig deeper into the Moxie subculture to see who is the most experienced and go from there.....
Moxie salon is located in the heart of Denver, next to Buffalo Exchange on Grant and 13th. The salon attracts the "counter culture" of Denver, which is city-style-punky-hipster." Moxie is also affordable. No need to drop $200 here! $120 for cut AND color, that's it! Katie O'shay is the O'shit. M. Franz says, "You walk in with mousy brown and you walk out with multi-colored angular.
Each stylist has an individual style, which adds to the appeal of the salon. Additionally, the light fixtures are something outta this world---a labyrinth of bendy white and metal lamp pipes looming above. "When your getting shampooed you look up at the lights and you like 'Whoa!'" The salon is very open and spacious. Local artwork sprinkles the walls, adding distinctive Denver flava.
I was referred to Moxie by a friend, and her hair always looked amazing. I will never go anywhere else to get my hair done! I really like the salon, it has a great enviroment. I go to Brooke and she is absolutely amazing, both at cutting and coloring. She's so sweet and talented, she's the best!
I went back again on Saturday to see Crystal. She is fantastic. Moxie is great. Crystal trimmed my hair and touched it up (it took a lot less time this visit since it was a touch up vs a start from scratch)...but the creativity and style are just as evident as the first time. I love my hair. Afterwards, Crystal cut my daughter's hair too, and she looks adorable. Moxie also supports Locks of Love-- we sent 8 inches off to help someone!

I was referred by my roommate who returned with the sharpest bob and great color. In need of something new I saw suzy and have her carte blanche. What I got was a fun choppy fantastically complex color. It was versatile enough for a la di da di brunch with the family or a night out. Its a great relaxed atmosphere with very friendly stylists.
I went to Moxie based on a few recommendations. I saw Suzi... she was extremely helpful and made me feel comfortable about losing so much hair. She listened to what I wanted and asked my opinon. I welcomed her professional opinon and it turned out great. Overall nice feeling to the entire place. The music at once was a little too loud, and 'Wookie' the receptionist could have been friendlier, but i'll definitely be back for Suzi.
I have been to so many different salons in this town, from floyds barber shop to some of the most high end salons in cherry creek, and this is one of the best haircuts I have had. Not only this the place in cap hill, where I live, but the people who work there are great. There is no snobby salon attitude at all, which even for a cap hill salon is rare. The cut I got all 3 times I went was exactly what I wanted, and I don't have easy hair to cut. I recommend brooke and Andi for there great service and really friendly attitude. Not only are the cuts great, but the prices are shockingly low. I will continue to get my hair cut here as long as I live in town.
I found my current hair dresser at moxie when I did a drop in. Her name is Kristi and is one of the kind natured people I have ever met. She also does a pretty fabulous doo :) She has a knack for finding the haircut and color that fit you and your personality, likes and dislikes. I strongly recommend this salon and especially kristi.
I've been to this salon once (based on a referral) and that will probably be the last time. I will say that my opinion is pretty much based on the stylist I had, so the other employees there might be awesome. I went the day before NYE so my stylist was in hurry to get to Party America and actually told me he was "racing against the clock" to get my haircut finished so he could get to the party supply store before they closed. That should have clued me in how my haircut was going to end up. There was a lot of hair jerking during the cutting process and in order to get things done quicker he pulled and wrung my hair out to get the excess water out instead of completely using a blow dryer to do the job. NOT COMFORTABLE and I'm assuming not that great for the health of my hair. And I made the mistake of asking for my bangs trimmed and practically ended up with china doll bangs. This was definitely one of my scariest visits to a salon. A word of advice: just because a place looks cool and hip, doesn't necessarily mean you're gone get stellar service.
