I've been seeing Dr. Szeto for my annual eye exams for years now and she's fantastic. She is genuinely nice and very patient answering my questions and waiting for me to decide if A or B is fuzzier. And of course she's very professional, too. She remembers personal details about me that always impresses me because I don't know how I could remember info about hundreds of patients. We always have a good time chatting about travel and other hobbies during my eye exam.
The office staff are also all wonderful. I've recommended several people to MVO and they have all been very happy with their eye docs as well.
Also, the science geek in me kind of likes the idea of the Optomap so I can have more info (and a baseline) of what's going on with, um, something with my eyes. Yeah, I can't remember what it measures exactly, but I remember wanting to pay the extra money to have that baseline info for the future! Heh. =) -

I was referred here by a friend but let me tell you, by far the worst service I've ever had in my life. This tall guy named Garry helped me. I went in for an adjustment and when he looked at my glasses he said "what are these? These look like cheap injected plastic, very poor quality". Then I replied "I just need my frames adjusted" he then took the glasses to the back and came back and then continuously kept pointing out defects with my frames and lenses. Before I could reply he got up and walked away with my frames and would bring me frames to try on that were ridiculously overpriced. Not to mention countless times I was interrupted by him. Honestly if I could give this place 0 stars I would because of this disrespectful employee. You won't ever see me coming back here. Don't come here if you want to deal with a rude used car salesman.

I had an eye exam with Dr. Linda Hur and was blown away with her thoroughness and professionalism. I'm used to a quick 20 minute service where the doctor glances at your file and go from there, but Dr. Hur took the time to make sure she gave me the right prescription and contacts. She answered all my questions without making me feel like a fool (I hate dealing with snooty medical professionals!). If you're seeking a professional, well experienced, detail oriented and thoughtful optometrist--make sure you book an appointment with Dr. Linda Hur.
The office is centrally located in Mt. View--convenient to find. The office is large and clean. They provide generous selections of frames on the bottom floor while the top floor is used as exam rooms. -

Dr. Koralia was great, very pleasant and knowledgeable, and she was able to satisfactorily answer all my questions. -

Just had my first eye exam with Dr. Linda Hur. She was excellent and I highly recommend her. She did a great job at not wasting time, working efficiently but also taking time away from her tasks to explain to me what she was doing & why certain things were important to follow.
The selection of glasses in the office downstairs was amazing as well. I haven't actually purchased them yet, but I did find two great pairs that I like.
Overall, this facility was an excellent experience and I highly recommend them! -

My favorite thing about MVO? Their HUGE selections of frames. I'm tired of walking into the corporate stores like Lenscrafters and seeing the same exact frames that everyone and their brother have. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. From my eye exam, picking out my frames and getting my glasses made there wasn't one hiccup in the entire process and I already turned my whole family on to MVO. If you're looking for frames that go with YOUR style, stop by MVO, take a look at their frames and I promise you won't be disappointed!
One more thing.. Garry is great! He has an eye for edge and always listens to your needs and concerns and makes sure you walk away satisfied with your new frames, whether it be reading glasses or sunglasses; you'll have frames that are one of a kind, just like you! -

I just had my second exam with Dr. Linda Hur and picked up my second pair of glasses. I think Dr. Hur is an awesome Optometrist. She and her staff greet you with a smile are very thorough with the exam process and will answer all questions and concerns. When I ordered and picked up my glasses I was very pleased with the warm welcome, friendly service and care that the staff gave me. I would refer Dr. Hur and her staff to everyone that asks.
What a pleasant experience! -

My bro recommended this place as he has been coming here for years for contact lenses. I wanted to use my VSP benefits on new sunglasses and dropped by yesterday.
I was a new customer and was greeted by a few folks when I walked through the door. I ended up working with Brandon who spent almost an hour helping me try on Oakleys, Maui Jims and Tag Heuer. They had a good selection of shades and I settled on a cool pair of Tags.
A++ for the excellent service. Highly recommended (sorry if this sounds like an eBay feedback :) ) -

Went here today and they've taken over the office next door and expanded their business. It's about 20% larger now. I just got lasik so all the Rx glasses I had were now useless. I had gotten my last 3 pair from this place so I wanted to find out if I could get the "blank" lenses (aka plano) to use instead.
Turns out unless I took them with me when I got Rx lenses, they were long gone even though my Oakleys and Pradas were less than a year old. Garry helped me out and looked up my VSP and explained that I could only get a discount starting in 2009 since I used up my plan for the year. Basically this meant that unless I paid $150+ for special plano lenses, my only other option was to get brand new sunglasses.
Garry then came up with an idea. I guess he called Prada and found that the original shipper in Italy most likely had a set of original lenses they could ship over for $20. I gladly accepted that. He's fairly sure this will work out and of course they won't bill be unless they actually come in, but for Garry to go above and beyond like that is commendable.
If the lenses do come in and they're really only $20, this will definitely be a 5.
UPDATE: OK they lenses came in fromt Italy after 2.5 weeks. Garry ROCKS!Listed in: Best of Castro Street, Mtn…

They are open every day and have a huge selection of designer glasses. I've been getting my contact lenses from here for about a year and they've been reliable.
Recently I bought eyeglasses from here for the first time, and they REALLY blew it. I mean the worst glasses I've ever gotten. I called to complain and they offered to recheck my vision with a different eye doctor.
The doctor that rechecked my vision said that the first doctor was way off on every single part of the prescription and they will redo the glasses for free (which they have to anyway by law). Would have been nice if they got it right the first time. It took two weeks to get the first glasses and will take another two weeks to get them redone. Sigh.
Still better than Lensecrafters.
One note of caution. Just because you think you have insurance that covers things, INSIST on getting an itemized statement BEFORE you get any exam, fittings, or purchase anything. I wouldn't say that MVO is intentionally deceptive, but they certainly try to hide the fact that many of their fees are not covered by insurance and slip you a surprise bill for hundreds of dollars.
For example, they have a machine that takes 30 seconds to measure the astigmatism of your eyes. For that they'll charge you like $130, but they won't tell you about the charges unless you ask first. Anyway, this is an OK place just make damn sure that they're completely upfront about every single fee they will charge and what is and isn't covered by your insurance. Get it in writing. -

I had been going to MV Optometry for a number of years. During all that time I'd been seen by Dr. Bell. When I made my recent appointment I found out that Dr. Bell was no longer there. So I was seen by Dr. Shen.
Well, all I can say is that I will be looking for a new optometrist. She really seemed as if she had no idea what she was doing. After re-testing my left eye 3 or 4 times, she never seemed sure if anything was accurate. She wrote a prescription for me, but I will be going somewhere else to have the test re-done completely and I WON'T be going back there. -

Yes, this place is pretty worn down and doesn't have glasses for sale in the same suite. I was also asked what my contact prescription was. I saw Dr. Bell who is very nice and outgoing. She was upfront and quick which I like. She did dilate my eyes and said it was okay for me to drive. But in all honesty, I shouldn't have been driving. It was bright and BLURRY as hell! I am glad I am alive.
Anyway, this place is pretty pricey. I do have insurance but ended up having to pay $130 out of my pocket... I checked my bill and the Dr. billed me for Keratology. So apparently that is just a fancy word for a more in depth contact lens exam involving astigmatism. The other contact lens charge covers all further contact lens checkup/follow up appointments. Pretty pricey; I have never paid more than $40 for all of that combined.
At least Dr. Bell hooks you up with tons of free samples for contact lenses (She gave me at least 10 trial pairs, as well as solution, different eye drops). She has you try a bunch of different brands to see what you like best. She is definitely generous/thorough when it comes to that. I have really dry eyes so it's hard for me to find the "perfect" pair of lenses.
Overall, I think this place is ok, just $$$. -

I had a super great experience at MVO today.
Enough so that I came here right after to Yelp

extremely nice and well informed. Never thought
I'd write something like this, but I highly recommend

Review from Brent A.
I absolutely adore Dr. Hur. She's such an amazing optometrist. During my first visit, she was able to run all the exams and properly prescribe the appropriate recommendations. For instance, my last optometrist had prescribed contacts for me because of my slightly less than perfect eyesight. Well, Dr. Hur said that I had no need for contacts and they could actually make my eyesight weaker, but I could wear glasses when I needed them. It actually made sense to me, plus I no longer needed to put little plastic bits in my eyes now!
During my next annual visit, we did a full range of examinations and tests. This time they took a retina scan, which ended up showing Dr. Hur that my eyes were fine, but that I had a freckle behind my eye that we should keep an eye out for in the years to come just to be on the safe side.
I haven't always been pleased with all of the staff at Mountain View Optometry, but Dr. Hur's assistant and herself are quite amazing. -

While i have found the doctors and most of the staff of MVO to be wonderful, there is one woman there who is the reason I will never go back. I'm not sure what her job title is, but I know her name, though I am choosing not to include it in my review.
I ordered some lenses and wore them for a few months, but they were really starting to hurt my eyes. I was told when I purchased them that their guarantee stated that if at any time you aren't satisfied for any reason they'd take back your unused lenses and exchange them for lenses that worked. I understood this to be par for the course, as they forced me to read this laminated document before my exam that stated it as such. Anyway, I did call my optometrist, and she said she could reorder the lenses I wore prior to the new brand, and I could return the unused lenses for an exchange.I thought everything was fine until I spoke with the woman who does the ordering. Even though i was returning nearly a years worth of lenses, they were only giving me about six months worth in return. I asked the woman why this was, and she was extraordinarily rude to me. She basically told me MVO was doing me a favor by taking back my unused lenses, so I should just be grateful and stop asking questions. Believe me, I never would have asked to return them if I hadn't been told it was okay by my doctor and by the laminated green satisfaction policy they make everyone read prior to their exam. She had to call me several times and was flat out rude to me at every opportunity.
Perhaps a career working with the public is not the best career choice for this woman. Perhaps she'd be better suited as a warden in a women's prison. I'm not really sure. All I know is that I am never going back to MVO because of her, which is unfortunate, because the rest of the business is great- the doctors are lovely, the glasses selection is vast, and the rest of the medical and non-medical staff are great. -

In my long history of wearing glasses and getting regular eye exams (my family has a history of retinal problems) this is the best clinic I've been to. I see Dr. Schwaderer, and he is pleasant and attentive. The office is very clean, professional, and high-tech, networked computers with flat-panel monitors everywhere and the latest technologies. For example, they have a laser retinal scanner (OptoMap) which, for $35 (it's sadly not yet covered by VSP) means you can avoid getting your eyes dilated, unless they see issues in the retinal scan.
Yearly eye exams are covered fully by my Guardian VSP insurance, and best of all, when you go there, you just give them your SSN and they look it all up for you, I've literally never seen paperwork or had to give them anything else except for the normal first-visit health questionnaire, and I've paid nothing (except OptoMap fees, which are optional) for my yearly eye exams.
The downstairs eyeglass shop is pretty decent, their selection isn't totally comprehensive, and they have the typical around 1-week turnaround time on high prescription eyewear, but their service is very good. There is also a very nice looking contact lens clinic upstairs but I haven't tried it myself. -

My experience at Mountain View Optometry was very positive. I have seen both Dr. Szeto and Dr. Bell, and both ladies were kind, efficient, and patient enough to answer a myriad of questions.
Dr. Szeto assisted me with my initial glasses prescription, but I was reassigned to Dr. Bell for contact lens fittings, as Dr. Szeto had an emergency.
Finding contacts that work for my dry, astigmatic eyes was no simple feat, but Dr. Bell gave me several trial pairs, and I kept going back until I found the best ones. I was never pressured to buy glasses there, which was good... as I wasn't too impressed with their selection. I did buy contacts there despite the prices... but I only bought one box , as it is definitely less $$$ to buy online.
Overall, highly recommended. -

Awesome, gorgeous, cool selection of frames! Service is a bit lacking -- takes a long time. But it's such a fun place to browse. Even if you're picky (which I am), I'm pretty sure you'll find something you love. Prices were comparable to chains like For Eyes.

I've seen two different doctors upstairs for regular and contact lens exams, and they've always been really helpful and professional.
The frame selection downstairs is modern and fashion-forward, but not excessively trendy. Also, the staff is great! Sometimes you have to wait awhile for service, but it's worth it. I never know what I want or what frames even look good on me since I wear contacts almost 100% of the time, but two different employees been able to guide me to some great selections in sunglasses and prescription frames/lenses. -

Their web site said they were open until 6:30. I get there at 5:59 and they're already closed up. The fine print on the door says they close at 6:00 on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Whatever. Just close at 6 every Thursday. Having exceptions like this just sets expectations for customers that you can't live up to. I have no incentive to go back.

I have nothing but great things to say about this place. My optometrist is Dr. Hur, who is the utmost professional and has the best "bedside" manner. She thoroughly discusses everything with you and is great about answering any questions you may have. She's friendly and approachable. Most importantly, she's not made any errors with my prescriptions unlike the last optometrist I saw located in SJ which is why I switched to her based on referrals from friends.
Anyhow, the front desk staff is very helpful and always very nice, and I've always gotten my glasses and contacts within a reasonable amount of time after ordering. Usually, they come in sooner than what they tell you. -

My husband & I both went in this morning for our first appointment there. We were welcomed when we arrived. Check in was easy, and we needed to fill out a few pieces of paperwork. They were pretty easy/simple. Shortly after we were taken, separately. We both had Dr. Zybya Karolia, O.D, she was really great. Made us feel at ease and took her time.
After the appointment I went downstairs to look at some new lenses & frames. Luckily for me they were doing a truck show, so there were many styles & brands to select. I am very pleased with this because the glasses & sun glasses were from the trunk show. They also had snacks & drinks, which was very nice. Sam helped me out & he was fantastic. It was great to have someone so interested in you & he had great attention to detail.
Overall: We both had a great eye exam. I plan on going back to buy both glasses & sunglasses. This was a great experience & I had a good time being there. I really felt welcome. -

My last visit with Linda Hur still haunts me. I have been putting off an eye exam for a long time. Im running out of lenses so I figure it's time to and get an eye exam again. I went to Golden Optometry in Milpitas, as recommended by a friend of mine. I had pretty good experience there, with no wait. My exam was very thorough and lengthy by Dr. Angela Huang. I told her that my eyes have been strained and after a thorough exam, she concluded that my vision is overcorrect. She lowered my prescription by -0.25. I have been wearing some trial lense and they felt great!
Conclusion is: Linda Hur over correct my vision and I've been having eye strain for a long time. My prescription was -4.5 before seeing her and -5.0 after seeing her. I was wondering how my eyes could have gotten worse so fast, over just a yr? Sorry to say that I will not go back there back and its good to know that my eyes didn't get worse than I thought. It's nice to wear lenses that didn't strain my eyes. I will write a seperate for Golden Optometry.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Dr. Hur at Mountain View Optometry is fantastic. She presents you with many options and ensures you end up with what works best for your particular needs. She takes the time to explain what is going on and why. You never feel like you are being rushed in and out of the office. I highly recommend Dr. Hur for all your eye care needs!

I had a really bad experience at this place a few years ago. When I showed up for my appointment, I was left to wait in the examining room for over a half hour - even the lights timed out. When the Dr finally showed up she blew off the fact that I had been waiting so long and then gave me a prescription for glasses that wasn't correct.
The reason I am writing this review now is because while looking for an eye doctor close to home I saw them listed and my experience was bad enough that I felt others should know. -

This place is amazing! Everyone who works here is so kind, freindly, and Extremely patient. I had to return three times before I was able to put in my contacts and take them out successfully and without hesitation, but there was no charge for the second and third training sessions. I am so fortunate that I found MV Optometry and Contact Lens Clinic. Thanks Mimi for your patience in working with me.

I disliked the place instantly. The office seemed worn down. The red pens they provided to write were a little disturbing to me. Maybe it's just the plain old Chinese superstition thing but I can't write my name in red. The doctor was nice but seemed a little unprofessional. She asked me what my contacts prescription was instead of testing me, which I found very odd. She went and dilated my eyes without asking for permission. As a result, I had a hell of time driving home in broad day light. When I called back to tell them what my prescription was, I was told the doctor was going to call back but she never did. I chose not to buy from the store downstairs because the displays were behind the counters and didn't seem accessible. Overall, it was a horrible experience.

This review is due entirely to the horrible service I had recently when getting a new pair of glasses. The person helping me handed me a few frames and sat down while I looked through their selection.
When asked a question about how well a certain frame fit my face, he only responded with, "Uh, yeah, I guess. Are they tight?" That wasn't even the question. Then he asked me if I liked the shape. Of course I like the shape, but I rely on you to be the expert. Every subsequent question about availability of frames, or recommendations with met with the same uncaring attitude. Had I not already had a prescription through MVO, I would have surely gone somewhere else. I couldn't even get help with fitting
This is really sad after the initial consultation I had with MVO was really good. But this experience was so "meh" that I'd much rather go try a different optometrist. -

The entrance to Mountain View Optometry is around the corner of the building and up a flight of stairs. The staff is very professional. We use Dr. Szeto and highly recommend her. Downstairs, many of the frames are very expensive, and the selection wasn't quite as big as we would have liked, but again, they were very professional.

I found this office (and Dr. Szeto) from my insurance company's website, but I think I got lucky. I have had nothing but great treatment and service from Dr. Szeto, even though some of the front desk staff don't seem like the sharpest knives in the drawer.
I immediately liked Dr. Szeto because she's one of the few people I've met who talks faster than I do! :) She's very sharp and observant, and has made suggestions for things to try and things that are likely to not work well for my chronically-dry, slightly astigmatic eyes that stare at monitors all day. I've been going to optometrists since I was 10, and wearing contacts since 16, and I was truly impressed. When the company who made my usual 2-week disposable lens apparently stopped making them, she had me come in for another fitting to try out a couple other kinds, no charge! She gave me another brand of the same type plus some daily-wear ones to try out, and made another appt for me to come back in two weeks and decide.
Yes, the glasses shop downstairs doesn't have all the sexiest, Eurotrashiest frames on the market, but I really don't care, since I wasn't willing to pay much above what was covered by my insurance.
The staff were good about explaining my options regarding lens thickness and the price differentials for each, since my prescription is very strong. They also helped me make a frame decision based on the thickness I had chosen, which again was a new experience after all these years and several previous pairs of glasses.
I would recommend Dr. Szeto to anyone. -

Dr. Szeto is the reason why I am giving this place 5 stars. I had a contact lens exam at Costco previously where they over-corrected one eye. Dr. Szeto pointed it out to me and gave me the correct rx to try out. The difference was too close to tell on my own. Then she showed me the difference with her equipment and that's where I saw the difference. I appreciate that she took the time to let me know the difference and have conversations with me like a real person.

I have had an excellent experience here and am really surprised to see that so many people have not. I have been to Dr Bell twice and have found the experience positively enjoyable! She never rushes and is happy to explain things. I was 40 this year and wanted to understand how aging might affect my eyes. She took the time to explain and disussed MY eyes not just generic problems that might affect anyone.
I ordered some prescription sunglasses the first visit and received them early with no hassle. My only criticism would be that I didnt find the range of sunglass frames very exciting and found the assistant a little offhand, sort of "hurry up won't you". Thats why its 4 not 5 stars.
I have also had no issue with hidden costs - I refused one of the extra treatments (it was clearly noted as an extra) but everything else to date has been covered. Re: one of the points below, the form you sign at the beginning makes it very clear that they always dilate first time patients and you sign a release to this effect. -

The doctors and their office are very professional, but the glasses shop leaves much to be desired.
They have a good selection of frames, and some of the sales people are very knowledgable. However, there are a few sales people that are a small step above shoe salesmen (not good if you're buying a custom set of glasses that you need to see properly), and they have made a number of mistakes in trying to fulfill my order (it's taken over 6 weeks to get my pair of glasses).
Go for the doctors, but avoid buying anything else there. -

My only experience is with Dr. Szeto, who I've been going to for 3 years. She is smart, professional and has an excellent bedside manner.
Dr. Szeto is extremely thorough and spends a lot of time with me every time I go in - both for annual appointments and for issues. She takes the time to explain everything she's seeing and the pros and cons of potential treatments. I get the sense she very much cares for her patients -- her office always calls me 2-3 times after my "issue" visits to see how I'm doing and if I'm getting better. She also does an amazing job of getting you in same-day if you have an emergency.
What I am always most impressed by is how Dr. Szeto remembers your last visit and any chit chat you may have made -- she always asks how xx project turned out etc. -

I work in Downtown Mountain View and I broke my new Oakley Sunglasses less than a week ago. I snapped one of the arms off, and pulled a Morpheus for a few days. Seeing at the glasses cost me over $300 , I was expecting to pay a decent amount to repair them. I went into the office, and was greeted by the lovely lady at the front desk. I showed her the glasses and she brought it to the back. She says they're going to try to do what they can. 10 minutes later, she came out with the glasses that now looked brand new. I asked them about the charges, and they simply said, "Don't worry about it, it was our pleasure". I was amazed. Thank you !!!

If you want a fantastic experience going to the eye doctor, then go to Mountain View Optometry and see Dr. Schwamber. He is very professional, personal and greets you with a huge smile! He diagnosed my issue very accurately and explained things very thoroughly.
Every time I have gone, I have been greeted by a friendly office staff and waited less than 5 minutes in the lobby, and almost nothing in the office. Great parking too. -

I went to this place nearly 7 years ago and had a bad experience with both their eye exams and eyeglasses department. The doctor decided to do a lot of extra (unnecessary) exams on me without asking me beforehand and I got a big stickershock when I saw the bill that was $100-$150 more than I normally pay for out of pocket after insurance. And this is when my company has very good eye care insurance. I paid the extra fees anyway and decided to not go back again. Fast forward 7 years and I went back again last month deciding to give them another try with a different doctor. Again, when I saw my eye exam bill, I was charged ~$100 more than what I had been paying everywhere else. Basically with my insurance you expect to pay about $50 out of pocket on eye exams. What this doctor did was make me pay ALL of my $150 contact lens allowance towards the exam itself (which gave me no extra info than what I'd get elsewhere) so that I had NO MONEY left to get the actual lenses. When I explained to her that she didn't get my permission to do all these extra exams for a fee, she refused to acknowledge that or take those charges off. Finally after a lot of arguing, she took off the one $86 charge that she couldn't explain away but refused to see me again or give me a prescription for my contacts. So I basically paid her office $90 for NO REASON. I couldn't order a new pair of lenses because I had no updated prescription. This place is terrible about its business practices and confirms why I didn't go back 7 years ago. I won't make the mistake of going there again.

I have been patient of Dr. Hur for more than 10 years. Dr. Hur is wonderful, professional and offers good advice. She is usually prompt on the appointments. There could be once or twice that I ended up waiting in the exam room for more than 15 minutes. But good doctors tend to have more clients. This happens to me with other medical doctors too. The staffs are friendly and responsive when I call in for questions. One downside is their fee is on the high side.
