This is my favorite park! The new and updated Kids Cove keeps the boys busy for hours. The only thing is it is almost always crowded so if you have really little ones...keep a close eye on them. The older ones are fast and can easily take over.
My 3yr old can run up and down that hill at least 10 times and not be tired - so instead of a nap take them there and then guaranteed they will go to bed on time. :)

This park is actually called Mt. TRASHmore!! But it is far from being trashy! It's actually a beautiful park and very impressive. The story I was told is that it use to be a landfill and they converted it into a rolling hilly park with a running/walking path, a lake, skate park, small skate halfpipe, and children's playground.
I went on a Thursday late afternoon and was surprised at how crowded it was! Especially the children's playground! There were so many kids it was insane. I can see now how kids could easily be abducted because it's a madhouse in that area and I would find it hard to keep an eye out the whole time.
The half pipe was pretty cool, I could spend all day watching people eat it on that thing! The grassy hills are fantastic to roll down and there were kids and families flying kites and picnicking.

The running/walking path was pretty huge, it goes around the lake and up the hill! There was a fairly large running group too! So nice to see! The path is also great for walking the dog too! Lots of doggie lovers!
I definitely dig it! And if I lived in the area I would visit often. I did take off one star because the parking lot is pretty small and it's a bit too crowded for my taste. Perhaps it's because there isn't much to do in VB, so everyone goes to Mt. Trashmore!Listed in: Virginia Beach List

If I were a parent with fat kids, I would be taking them to Mount Trashmore every weekend. Love this place!
I'm not much of a runner, but I just ran here for 45 minutes and never got bored. It's the perfect running spot for me because 1.) there are designated trails, 2.) there's a lot of people, and 3.) there's great variety.
If I want to go easy, I just run the around the park a few times on flat pavement. If I want to step it up, I add stairs. If I want to exercise so good that I almost throw up, I do intervals up and down the hills.
The only problem I have is that the stairs seem a little wide. So if you have short legs like me, or just not very comfortable running up and down stairs for fear of falling (also like me), it feels like you almost have to bound up the stairs like a freakin' gazelle. But I guess this could be a good thing because it makes you work harder...Listed in: Great First Dates

I've been coming to Mt. Trashmore Park since I was a little kid and I love it. It's a great place for kids, families, and runners/joggers.
Now that I'm a little older, I come here to do some jogging whenever I'm in the Virginia Beach area. They have a great path that you can modify from the basic lake, the lake and the hill, the hill, going up the hill, etc. Whichever way you take, it's an excellent place to work up a little sweat.
They also have great things to do on the hill, like fly a kite or have a little picnic on a picnic blanket! It's the perfect setting to just enjoy your day and feel the air.
There are quite a few places to take children too, including the little playgrounds they have at the entrance and if you go around the hill, they have Kids' Cove. There is also a skate park in the back for those that are into skateboarding.
The only downfall is that there aren't too many picnic shelters if you're looking to have a big party, but if it's small, I recommend the hill.Listed in: HOME

Awesome park. A little over 1.5 miles around the lake and the main hills, so for you runners, pace yourself! Beautiful view from the top, and the fireworks shows they've got here each 4th of July are pretty sweet.

Don't get fooled by the name "trash" and "more". Impressive park in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. This is joggers, runners and walkers paradise. Plenty of trails or the hill sweat on. Wonderful skateboard park. Kids Cove playground is the busiest and everyones favorite.

Mount Trashmore Park may be neglected with dead grass and duck poop paved paths, but I'm obsessed. I feel that it's rare to see VB locals enjoying the outdoors, but this is one place that lures us out and about.
This landfill turned park has something for absolutely everyone. The covered tables and benches are perfect for cooking out. I suggest getting some grub to grill, drinks, family, and friends and making an afternoon of it. Plus, the three, yes, three, playgrounds will keep the kids occupied all day.
There are also paths around the lake and hills (plus a set of stairs that will leave your buns a' burnin) perfect for running as long as you're good at jumping over dog leashes and dodging child-shaped obstacles. Or, if you have better balance than I do, skateboard on over to the skate park to use and abuse their rails and ramps.
Killing a day at Mt. Trashmore is easily done. Especially if there is a carnival in town camped out or if you're in the area around the fourth, they have some of the best fireworks in town. One thing you cannot miss are the sunsets, when the dry grass beneath you turns from crumbling beige to a golden wheat and the lake glows pink and orange, it's perfection. -

If you're from out of town, yes, it's built on a giant mound of trash, but no, you'd never notice. It's basically a public park with a mountain. Lots of footpaths for walking or jogging, a skate park so kids don't have to practice on streets or buildings, and of course, Kids Cove, a large play area for children (ideal for those 10 or under). The mountain itself provides a gorgeous view, and is perfect for flying a kite on a windy day. No, you can't sled down it anymore in the winter, but it's still a great way to spend the day withe the family

The Virginian-Pilot does an occasional series called "What's in a Name" in which they explore the history of the names of local landmarks, neighborhoods etc. They did one recently on Mount Trashmore.
Seems the name "Mount Trashmore" wasn't the City's idea. But when word got out they were building a giant grassy knoll on top of a landfill and turning it into a park, the name stuck.
Thankfully the committee syndrome didn't kill what has since become a campy point of pride at the beach.
MT could definitely use some greening up. But it functions perfectly well as a place to run, walk, fly a kite, have picnic or drop in on a half pipe (there's a skate park).
Plus it's just amusing when people come to town and ask, "What's that," and you can say, "It's a big hill on top of a pile of garbage." Welcome to Virginia Beach. -

I love that Virginia Beach was able to turn a former landfill into a city park. Growing up in Virginia Beach, I forget how strangely unique that is. But originality aside, it's not even close to my favorite park in the area.
On one hand...
-It's one of the best places to run (or walk) in Virginia Beach. There are several trails around the lake and hills. If you are really hard core, you can run up/across the mountain for more intense training.
-The skate park is pretty sick and has a 13-foot half pipe. In fact, I rarely see anyone with the nerve and skill to attempt it.
-They have great fireworks for Independence Day.
-The mountain is fun for flying a kite or rolling down it.
-The park is kid-friendly with playgrounds and a paved trail good for strollers.
-Free and easy parking. Yes, that actually exists in Virginia Beach.
On the other hand:
- There's a big lake and nothing you can do with it. There are no paddle boats or canoes anymore, you are not supposed to feed the ducks, dogs can't swim in it...pretty much you look at it. Maybe that's for the best because we're talking about a pool of water that is next to a trash dump.
-No trees and no shade. On a hot summer day, it's pretty miserable there. At least add some fountains or misters or something.
-There should be more activities available at this huge park. Other smaller area parks offer disc golf, horse shoe pits, ball fields, corn hole, off-leash dog parks, hopscotch, you get the idea.
-The view from up top: I-264. Eh.
This park has great potential. Maybe one day we'll see the City put more resources into it. -

"Mount Trashmore Park is 165 acres. The mountain is 60 ft. high and over 800 ft. long, and was created by compacting layers of solid waste and clean soil. The park is open from 7:30am to sunset. Facilities include four large and many small picnic shelters, playground areas, a basketball court, four volleyball areas, parking, a walking trail, vending machines, and restrooms. The park is open from 7:30am to sunset.
The park features two lakes, Lake Windsor located along South Blvd, is brackish water fed by Thalia Creek. Fishing is allowed. Lake Trashmore located along Edwin Dr, is freshwater and is stocked with fish. No private boats are allowed on this lake, but fishing is allowed." - excerpted from the website.
The Mount Trashmore Park is one of the favorite parks for the Hampton Roads residents to watch the fireworks, to kite, or to host the birthday parties. I went there a couple times for the fireworks and it was really nice... until my mother fell and rolled all the way down on this trashmount. LOL. There is a carnival for a week every year in the Spring time (or summer time? it has been a while), so it is awesome to visit the Trashmore for the mini rides and the kites.
Edited - My boyfriend said it is a great place to sled on the snow days (it happens rarely, though). -

Mount Trashmore is a Va Beach staple, in fact I can never remember a time that I didn't know about 'the mountain made out of trash'. Now that I'm older, I realize there are many things to do at Mt. Trashmore besides just rolling down it ...
For example, there is a great running/bike path. The day I went it was pretty crowded though, the only downside, but it was nice to see so many people/kids/dogs out enjoying the day. There is a picnic area by the water, a skate park, and plenty of ducks to feed.
You can usually find people on top Mount Trashmore with kites and Frisbees. For those who are a little more hardcore, there are stairs that go up the side that you can climb, but I'll leave that one to the professionals. -

Virginia Beach, VA
Mount Trashmore is a solid entry into Virginia Beach's parks and rec system, with paved walking trails, an extensive playground, and a skateboard park on the far side of the trail. It also sports some wicked breezes and a modest number of picnic areas for the kids.
For runners, the park has marked (more or less accurately) two primary trails. The first, the lake trail, is a relatively flat path that hugs the mountain for the first quarter mile and circles the lake for a path of about 1.42 miles. The second trail is less accurately measured and wraps around the hill portion of the park. Narrow sections near the skate park and the major playground make this trail somewhat difficult to run on peak days and times.
The park technically closes, but if one parks in the adjacent overflow lot (always open) one can use the park to run after / before hours.
Bathrooms are scarce, with one on the lake side and one on the hill side near the playgrounds.
Improvements to the park that I'd like to see (and that would give the park the extra star):
Trails with more / more accurate mile markers and directions. Some of the quarter mile markers are missing. Additionally, it would be hard for someone unfamiliar with the park to judge, say, the figure eight trail listed on their site.
Fitness stations. I've inquired with the city to ask what sort of investment this would entail, as I'd be willing to try to raise the money to do it. So far, I've not heard back.
More bathrooms / water fountains! For the size of the park, there are very few working water stations.
More trees along the path. Trees near Independence Boulevard would serve to dampen traffic noise and exhaust for all. -

Great place to go run... it can be a bit crowded on the weekends, but it's manageable. The hills are awesome if you wanna do some HOOAH type stadium runs... That hill is a monster (trying running up that joker 5/6 times)
I've had great memories here... first dates and such... flying kites... running... It's a trip to know that it all use to be a landfill... GENIUS -

It may just be me, but I think it's insane that one of the major landmarks of this city is a huge mountain of garbage covered with grass. I know, you are scratching your head or giggling thinking that I must surely be joking, but I assure you that I am not. But alas, Mount Trashmore is a Virginia Beach city park and surprisingly a pretty nice one. And popular too. Every day tons of joggers, dog walkers, chatters and children playing fill the park located centrally in the city. The huge mountain is great for exercise and fun, although they recently banned sledding down the slope (boo!) and the waterfront scenery almost makes you forget that you're sitting on a mountain of trash. One man's trash is another man's treasure: the new slogan of Virginia Beach.

Even on crowded days Mt Trashmore has room for everybody. Pretty much the best kite flying spot in town. Fishing in the lake is good if you know where to go, but they only allow shore fishing, and you do not need a license here. they used to rent paddle boat, but I am not sure if they still do. The park also boasts a large play ground for the kids, as well as a skate park. Nice place, and a real asset for the city.

Love Mount Trashmore. If you're a runner you can do so much here between the hills and trails. Great place for families, pets, everyone! They have a skate park now too.

Even more crowded and dirty with all the congested suburban sprawl around it. Most of it water but you don't see much water activity. Now what little wooded area nearby is being destroyed for even more overbuilding... amazing.
