Oh, crap.

So, it's just 4 big rock heads of some presidents the died a long time ago and that none of us really remember.

So what!

So what?

This place is amazing.  I don't know what is more fun.  The drive into Mt. Rushmore is a nice "Mario Andretti" type of highway.  I can't believe that the road in could not have been more straight.  There is a cool wooden arched bridge that you drive under.  And a tunnel that you drive thru.  When I drove thru Keystone, there was some crazy and wild looking mountain man dude in the middle of the street yelling about some upcoming gun fight.  The rock hillsides sparkled in the sun.  Beautiful.  And then you get to the monument, itself.  I love this place.  It's nice.  Fairly quiet.  Very peaceful and relaxing.  The trails are very nice.  Up hill, down hill, up stairs, down stairs.  They call it strenuous, but hey, I made it okay without being winded.  The museum is interesting and I really enjoyed the film narrated by Peter Jennings.  And I liked the interviews with some of the workmen, too.  Sixty five cents an hour?  Wow.  Heck, I even liked the gift shop.  And don't forget to stop into the ice cream store and get a vanilla/raspberry soft serve cone.  Yum yum!

Wow.  I mean it.

I don't even know where to begin with this one.

I was on a trip of the mid-northwestern states in February once and decided that it was high-time I visited SD's fabled attractions -- Mt. Rushmore, the Mitchell Corn Palace, and Wall Drug.

Mt. Rushmore certainly was the most inspiring.  Seeing as it was cold and February, the place was deserted, though it was a beautiful day with a crisp blue sky lighting up a snow-covered Rushmore.

I really enjoyed the movie (which I believe at the time was narrated by the late Peter Jennings) and was fascinated and relieved to finally see the original relief of the mountainside prior to the handiwork of today.

The breakfast I enjoyed there was also good.

The only downside was that I zoned out at the security checkpoint and was roundly outed as some sort of suspected terrorist, so the entire contents of my car were emptied and searched, but that's another story for another time :)

A true American tourist trap--it is absolutely impossible to resist buying at least one postcard or bumpersticker or other piece of junk when you are in the gift shop at Mt. Rushmore. If you manage to escape the gift shop, you will surely buy an ice cream cone on the way out, and if you manage to resist that, you can always keep your receipt for the parking lot (much more expensive than the postcard will be). Most people say Mt. Rushmore is smaller than they thought, which is true of the Statue of Liberty, too. I can't disagree, but I would say that you should go to Mt. Rushmore not so much to see Mt. Rushmore itself, but to see who else is there to see Mt. Rushmore. That's the real fun.

Mount Rushmore Memorial Parking Garage. Admission is free but you have to pay for parking. You used to pull off the road on several turnouts as you go up the hill to view the heads and now the place is littered with no parking signs. This place is not what it used to be.

I think it's worth seeing if you're in the area, but I don't know if I'd go way out of my way to see it.  I thought the coolest thing is that you can see Mount Rushmore through each of the tunnels you drive through (either looking back through the tunnel or ahead).

Here's the thing.  I wouldn't plan a trip to SD just to see Rushmore, but goin cross country on I-90 it would have been crazy to miss it.  Yes it's a little touristy, but hey, it was a pretty spectacular accomplishment.  It took 17yrs to carve that mountain (we should all have something we're so passionate about).  And it's right next to Custer State Park.  If you're in the area you really should stop by.
