only hit up motif a few times.. cover gets expensive..
the selection of girls is average, went on the weekends, WET girls are wetter, IMO. theres a smoking section outside, bartenders are cool, drinks are decent for the price, and upstairs/downstairs dance floors. lounge-ish area upstairs, seats everywhere.
wouldn't mind going again if my company was right
I don't know if it was because it was my birthday and i had a blast and don't really remember how the service actually was or if this place is actually worth 4 stars.
What i DO know is...
Bottle service was nice, the girl was a sweetheart and made me take the first shot of patron (happy 21st!)
Upstairs area was nice, liked those couches and seating area.
I liked how there was an upstairs bar and we had our own section.
I left my purse upstairs (newbie mistake) but the bouncer saved it and kept it at the bar. (thanks!)
I liked the downstairs area since everyone could smoke and dance at the same time.
What sucked...
No in and out privileges apparently, my 2 friends couldn't come back in even though they were part of our bottle service and only went out to take a phone call. no bueno.
It was super empty for a Friday night. (which I'm glad for my birthday)
I'd come back i think. It was fun.
When Motif first opened, this club had a fun atmosphere and great decor. The space is fairly large with a separate upstairs VIP section and dance floor.
PRESENT... I would only come here if I knew the person throwing the party, & if it was their guest list only.
WHY???
- The Management is rude.
- The Security staff is even more rude, with an overly egotistical female security guard who likes to push around her power. We watched her pick up and throw a girl on to the floor from a stool!
- Bottle Service provides no benefits, you wait in line like everyone else.
- On 2 separate occasions friends booked bottle service here, and on BOTH occasions the original price of the bottles purchased was not offered and we were asked to pay an additional $100 per bottle! Keep in mind, this was after we were served.
- For Dinner: The food is pretty good, although overpriced for the size of the meal and the area. There are much better nearby restaurants who will give you more bang for your buck.
Ultimately, if you have another option choose it. This place may be aesthetically appealing, but disappointing in just about every other aspect. I've tried to give it the benefit of the doubt on a number of different occasions, but I'm only liking the place less and less. A few friends have even vowed never to go back. Yes, its that bad.
Place is horrible! SERVICE is horrible... came out for my birthday... i was kinda hesitant because i happened to stop by the weekend before and it was hella DEAD but we knew someone who knew someone...
BOTTLE SERVICE SUCKS! we've gotten bottles there many times before and never had any problems.... hostess overcharged, security was rude, almost was ran over security after they kicked some people out.. totally unnecessary...
would never come here again, motif will never see another dollar from my pocket....
the only thing that made it worthwhile was the great time I had with a great group of friends despite the horrendous experience!
I'm gonna make this review real short. 2 years ago it was really crackin! I went there Halloween Eve..never again!
Horrible. Never Again. Came here for bottle service and their incompetent hostesses try to overcharge when the bill comes. Its not surprising several other yelpers have said the same thing about them trying to over charge. Dont waste your time and money at this place, theres plenty of other places to enjoy your nights.
The funny thing is ive had bottle service here many many times before and after last nights experience I am happy to say I will never come to Motif again. I dont know how you treat a repeat bottle service customer like this and ever expect to keep doing business.
MOTIF's vip service is absolutely the worst Ive ever experienced at a club.
DO NOT GO TO MOTIF! if you want to get harassed by the UNPROFESSIONAL bouncers then go ahead. Last night we got kicked out for no apparent reason. I guess the bouncers were bored and needed action so they punched me and thew me out in the street like a dog.
I've never gotten treated like that in my LIFE..
motif never again!!!!!!!!
Short and simple... WHACK!!!
CLUB REVIEW: You can have a great time depending on who is throwing the event in this large, two-story venue with outside smoking areas.
Professionally, they are great to work with, however, THEIR associates may not be the best. Read below for example.
I was the event planner for a birthday party and bouncers took over 30 minutes to walk the guests to their designated area and would not give them VIP access bracelets for lower and upper access; The party had to situate themselves in the VIP area the entire night and had problems accessing the bathroom on the lower floor.
The bottle service girl showed up twice--once to drop off the bottle and to grab the tab in which gratuity was mandatory. I had to speak to the owner to get another bottle. If the hostess was more attentive and did not waste the guests' time in looking for her to order more, her gratuity would have been a lot more.
4 stars for the environment, 2 stars for service provided by Motif.
I had my bachelorette party here July 2008.
Dinner reservations for 20 girlfriends. The Calamari appetizer and the Salmon dinner entree are awesome! The only thing I would seriously suggest to the owners is play music while we wait. Our cocktails were fabulous! The bartender even let me do a sexy nasty shot off him (i'm not telling where on his body *wiNk*)
Shortly after dinner, the owner passed out our VIP wristbands and escorted us to our section. I booked their largest VIP section upstairs overlooking the downstairs dance floor. Our cocktail girl was sweet and attentive. We ordered 1 bottle each of Hennessy, Grey Goose, and Patron Silver. Endless mixers: cranberry and OJ.... two buckets full of ice and Red Bull. Plenty of room for all my tipsy girls. They even provided 2 security guys the whole time to watch our stuff while we went on our million smoke breaks and restroom trips.
Let's see what's new.
Thursdays is not cracking anymore after Sabor/WET opened up. I do recommend to go their Friday events by Prolific, Spinatiks, Empire, etc.
Make sure to get in the club early for free, but don't expect a big crowd till 11:30PM and up. I still give it four stars since I always have a good time with friends...Fridays rocks there :p
[Positives]: still fun outdoor smoking area, more diverse crowd now, girls bathroom still looks decent, friendly bouncers
[Negatives]: 2nd floor is still super bright, wet floors, sometimes if you get the uncool bartenders: they give you waterdown shots or sub drinks with weaker alki...i already have my two favorite bartenders

I've been here once. And within the first 10 minutes, I was over it and was ready to go home to sleep. And this may be unfair to the establishment, but I just felt like I was surrounded by the douchiest people in SJ. Sorry to say.
Now granted, after a few drinks, I was starting to have a good time. Drinks were good, strong and the place was nice looking. 2 floors, takes credit cards, big outdoor area...not too bad. But, I wouldn't come here on the regular...especially if I would have to pay cover.
i went here because Wet already closed their guestlist early. The place was pretty empty.
The decor reminded me kind of a ship wreck or something.
They have discounted drinks until around 11pm I believe.
So the dance floor inside is pretty small and same with the upstairs. By the way they make the upstairs seem like VIP since they have a body guard standing there, but anyone can go up. By the way on the top floor is trance/house, so if you aren't into it don't bother going up.
For the smokers there is a patio area, but it gets pretty crowded late at night. It isn't too big so you kinda have to push through.
I came here three times.. or well more like two and a half times.
one for a birthday dinner. The dinner took forever one cook but it's understandable since it's more of a club.
the second time was sooooo fun. Bottle Service I heart you A LOTTTT.
the three time.. or more like two and a half... all I have to say is I don't like you, the big Hispanic bouncer. You RUINED MY NIGHT. HOW DARE YOU.
the end. = ( = )
you have to wait in fucking line to go up stairs. I mean, thats pretty whack right? Thats pretty much my beef with the spot. Besides that, It's just like any other bar in San Jose.
Ghetto... That is all. Fiance and I met some friends here a few weekends ago... Apparently, a friend of a friend organized bottle service for the group. I hear it is the cheapest bottle service in town. So, worthy to check out.
Besides our good looking group, everyone else was rather ghetto and blah. I'm so glad I'm home writing this review. I would get my ass kicked by some of the ghetto looking guys and gals...
I just love how the bouncers act so official, like their roles are so important. The fiance and I showed up after 11 and left shortly after 12. Perhaps if we were drunk enough, we could of had fun here, but an early Sunday breakfast with some old friends in town from the east coast reminded us we needed to be in bed soon...
What an interesting experience...
This place was bad, real bad, Michael Jackson.
I wanna say I came on the wrong night but looking at all these other reviews, I guess Motif just doesn't cut it. Usually, Thursday nights can be pretty fun, depending on where you go.
We got there around 10:30pm, hoping that maybe we came at the peak of the hour. Boy were we wrong. The place was dead. On top of that, it was mainly dudes. Besides a couple of my friends, I think one of the bartenders composed only 1 of 4 females in this place. WTF?!
Their beer selection killed it too. Tell me, HOW DO YOU SURVIVE BY ONLY SERVING 3 DIFFERENT BEERS?
I think the only exciting thing of the night was when I saw the highlights on ESPN on their High-Def T.V.'s. Woot.
Anyway, an hour into it, my friends and I called it quits and decided to move the party. We had to. If we stayed, our night would have ended on bad terms....and sobriety.
i thought the venue decent for a chill night of partying. BUT there were more bad things that stood out about this place that bugs the shit outta me.
I had my bday celebration here just last week and i've never been treated by the staff so rudely in my life. I totally understand they just wanna keep things in running order, but damn, don't use your damn power over me. I AM your f*ing guest.
you are hosting my party. treat my people with respect and we'll all get along.
- FOB girl with the clipboard - total biatch.
- secURity by the stairs - why are there so many of them? & why is this even necessary?
- strobe lights on the 2nd floor upstairs - did i accidentally walk into a rave? i was seeing bright white spots by the end of the night
anyways, i still had fun after all the BS i had to go through cuz it was my bday. gotta party! it was nice seeing everyone from HS again. fun drunken night. :D
come to SF to party. you'll be friends with the club owners/staff/security by the end of the night. maybe even get laid.
I know I'm getting too old for clubs when I'm there at 9:15pm and they haven't even opened the doors yet. Although they were still getting set up for the evening, the owner was gracious enough to let us inside and gave us a nice tour of the space, which is one of the more tastefully done "ultralounges" in the Bay Area. The loft lounge layout is similar to Mist in SF (but much nicer), and there's a spacious outdoor patio out front with cabanas to lounge in. I think they convert that area into a restaurant earlier on. The food actually looks really good -- gotta come back for dinner.
The staff was really friendly, and because we were there so early, there was plenty of room to lounge and dance, and getting drinks was super easy.
When the place used to be part of Agenda, my friend actually had his wedding reception there. It's still a cool spot to do something like that if you are looking for a chill dance party "motif." Ha.
last time I came to Motif for Crave, I was very unsatisfied because I came for the house music upstairs that never ended up taking place that night....
but tonight for crave, YESSS there was HOUSE upstairs and I danced and sweated like a mothaf*(&#* cause I just love dancing to house that much... so here's my updated, better, and happier review of Crave at Motif....
I specifically come here to d.a.n.c.e... 1.2.3.4.5... and sing to the b.e.a.t.... cause im ready to ignite. haha okay but real talk:
Finally, another option for a LGBT event in downtown sj, it's a nice venue with a big ol smoking area with places to sit and lounge and cuddle up on whoever your tryin to cuddle up on cause it does get cold out there.
I mostly would frequent the upstairs room where I can groovaloo and get lost in the beat with the Electro/house. I love to dance, so thats always most important to me is music and space, and upstairs there is PLENTY of that...
but aesthetically Motif has a real nice light set up so its definitely a good vibe for your ears and eyes.
And if house isnt your steez like it is mine, downstairs there were plenty of folk bumpin and a'grindin to good hip hop and stuff you'd bump on the radio...
good space, good music both up and downstairs, crowded enough but not packed like sardines, smokers are happy. dancers are dancing.. and yeh.. i dont know what else to say, I had a good time and will have more good times.

A friend of mine decided at the last minute to go clubbin' in San Jose on the 10th Oct. and picked Motif as our destination. We waited in line along with the people that had bottle service ~ that should have been the first indicator of 'funk' ~. They were keeping people in line to make it seem like it was a full house which later we find out it wasn't the case. Usually, club promoters or bouncers will let the shall I say better looking women in without any hassle, but this wasn't the case. Moving right along, while waiting we kept hearing the guy checking the ID saying "after party ticket?", we then asked what it was about, he answered as if we should have known "Jamie Foxx after party". They had a pseudo red carpet with someone taking your picture without your consent and a video guy just shooting empty footage of your every move even on the dance floor - - not sure where that'll end up. We headed right to the dance floor and might I add it was very high school like; the boys alongside the bar and the girls on the opposite side of the wall, my friend and I just danced. I think 99% of the people that came through the door had bottled service and they were upstairs drinking the night away. Sidebar* Nice to know the recession hasn't affect the younger working class. End Sidebar. To sum it up, Jamie Foxx never showed up; Surprise! It was all a gimmick to charge more at the door. OH! One last thing, they don't have coat check and they won't allow you to leave and come back. There you go another San Jose club for you.
Went here for the Lunar New Year celebration last night. I'm glad to see that Motif is still one of the better clubs in San Jose (the other top contenders being Vivid and I'm guessing Wet, although I've never been to Wet so I can't say for sure). Then again, what constitutes a "good clubbing experience" is somewhat subjective so if you don't know me personally, I highly suggest you read some of my other reviews to get some idea about the things I enjoy.
Anyways, here's a partial list of the things I like about Motif~
- Cheap cover and a guest list that doesn't close until 11;
- Good music (I like hip-hop, a lot of my friends like house--Motif plays both);
- Non-ghetto crowd (oh so hard to find in San Jo);
- The bouncers/security people are cool. I've never seen them harass anyone unnecessarily or deny them entry for a stupid reason, and they don't have that retarded policy of holding up the line so that the club looks busier than it is.
- STRONG DRINKS.
The verdict: I always have a good time here.

this review is for the CLUB only (haven't tried the restaurant).
i feel like the only reason i had fun here that night was cuz i had a few beers in me. and that's probably how they manipulate their crowds: the bar runs along the wall immediately next to the dance floor, which isn't really big.
the decor is ok: they were going for modern but it ends up kind of emo? they also have a nice outdoor patio area and a VIP lounge upstairs. bathrooms are clean and perhaps nicer than the actual club.
reasons to go: cheap drinks (beers $5 and all the cocktails we ordered were under 10) and CRACKIN DJ!!!!!!
havent gone back to this place in ages, and decided to go back the other week with couple friends. One thing sure changed. its freakin dead as hell, to a point that you can actually hear crickets! lol
apparently, nothing in downtown sj last. such a shame, since its a decent looking place. Cant really say the same for the folks that attends though.

Wow, I went here on a Thursday night and I must say I felt like an old fart. I don't think they check IDs very well, because I felt like I was at Eastridge mall and not a night club.
Also it seem liked everyone knew each other, I think it's because I been out of the scene so long. Also I bought a couple of white folks up in there, and man they were the tallest people by far. I am not hip enough anyways.
"Dead"
I would say this place has a good party one out of ten times they do one. This past Friday Motif was dead. I tried to make it fun, but there was only about 30 people there and half of the group was part of my group.
I was also hear about 2 or 3 Fridays ago when Empire threw the party, it was popping. If this place uses better promoters this place will have a better crowd.
Motif is alright. Went for the first time on Friday with some of the girl friends for a birthday event and for a happy early birthday to me. And to my surprise it was a nice and spacious place with a cool patio-ish area outside, too bad it was a bit too cold. Upstairs was VIP so we didn't get to check it out but whatever I had my fun that night. The bar was pretty big so it didn't take too long to get drinks and you don't have to push your way though. The bartender was really nice and hooked it up so it didn't take long for things to get a bit interesting, lol.
The music wasn't too bad, just a bit too much of the hypy bay stuff only the boys can get dumb too, lol. And another thing was the three male to one female ratio, not as bad as Temple but still a bit annoying. Plus, its not a good idea to crowd a bunch of girls into one place right? Hah. Decent crowd of people, mostly Asian. But, I had a good time probably cause we didn't pay a cover and got pretty wasted.
This place used to be cool to come too but i havent actually been here since last year. The security in front is a total asshole and thinks hes bad ass. They make you wait to go upstairs to the other dancefloor which is extremely stupid. Why cant you freely walk up and down the stairs? All of my friends agree that they hate coming here because of this. it just makes it harder upon everybody else.
Aside from that, the club is decorated pretty nice and the music was pretty good. Im actually going to come by again for an event next weekend. My one year boycott is over. Dont let me down.
Dear Motif,
Hi, I was a friendly patron of yours a long time ago. I arrived with several of my friends and it started to sprinkle a little so we quickly ran inside and realized it would cost about $10 per person to get in. Whatever, we paid anyway.
First things first: wow, for a Saturday night, you sure were dead. You were hardly crowded and that's when we knew we needed one thing: alcohol. But to our dismay, even alcohol couldn't help! Not even if it was decently priced alcohol :(
The real crappy thing about you is the crowd you attract. Nothing but ghetto looking, sneaker wearing, going hyphy sort of crowd. And to make matters worse, you played bay area hyphy music for them! Grosssss.
Although your overall look and decor wasn't bad, I think you're just shit out luck with your location -- everyone knows downtown san jose is ghett-o.
I don't blame you, in fact, I might just return. This time, can we NOT go stupid, doo doo dumb?
Thanks a bunch :)
Xoxo,
Tina
Went here on a Saturday night and it was OK experience. I like the music played here and the ceiling decor was nice. There's also a upstairs with its own couches and dance floor; that's cool. Overall, at around 11:30pm, not many people on the dance floors, but the place seemed empty overall.
At least the womens restroom was clean! I noticed a table that had all these different candies, mints, and feminine products displayed and the lady who worked in there was sweet.
This place sucks... They say they are going to take care of you with bottle service, and then when it actually comes down to taking care of you, they make a huge deal out of it, and then when the bill comes they charge you a bunch extra cuz you're drunk and you wont remember...
First off... the hanging rock decor is awesomely cool! Very modern.
They have a nice open patio for people who want to chill outside or smoke. It just sucks that you have to walk through all that smoke to enter and exit the club (I totally despiiiise cigg smoke!).
The drinks here are reasonably priced. About $10 a piece.
There's plenty of room to dance and walk around. There are two dance areas: one upstairs, one downstairs.
Good atmosphere. The crowd isn't so moody like over at Vivid. Good place to have a chill clubbing night with some friends. =)
First off, I have to say that the place is ultra modern inside with plenty of space to spread out. No cover was charged on Thursday night, and we had our names on the guestlist anyways just in case. Music seemed to have a good variety too it, with lots of remixes played but there was always that strange song that stuck out as bad.
By around 11:30-12 there were more people, and suprisingly a lot of Asians. Not suprisingly for a club that's owned by an Asian guy I guess. Drinks were not cheap, but not super expensive either. $6 for a beer? $25 for 3 cocktails w/o tip? I thought that bartenders can pretty much tell you whatever price they want if you don't have a menu in front of your face... Anyway, lots of people came and went because it wasn't super crackin', so I think next time I come over there it will be on a Fri. /Sat. instead of Thursday.
One word for this place: Lame!! Here are my reasons:
(1) This was the biggest waste of 20 dollars in my life. We all went because we got on the guest list which meant FREE! but it was like they held the line until 11 then let us in. So sadly we paid.
(2) the workers here are ridiculous. The ugly witch running around with the clipboard is rude! And the bouncers are on a power trip.
(3) this place lacks diversity. It was definitely an Asian invasion. I felt like the whitest person there.. and I'm half Asian!! It was so bad this Asian guy came up to me and asked if I was looking for a white boy, then pointed to his friend. Ha! so funny asshole.
(4) blocking off the upstairs area makes no sense. It's like some psychological technique to make us feel exclusive when they let us up. Yeah, its not for anyone special.. they just randomly let people in or randomly refuse people. But don't worry.. you're not missing out.. there's just more chairs up there..
(5) the DJ sucked so bad. Well the one upstairs did. I think he enjoyed his music more than the crowd did. Sometimes we'd stop dancing cuz the songs were horrid, then we'd turn and see him dancing around and jumping behind the turn tables. Wowww...
I give this place one star for its decorations.. but this is the type of place that's fun only when you're drunk off your ass. I can do that in my living room.
One star -- One of the nicer/larger venues in downtown San Jose. Way better looking than both WET and Agenda in my opinion.
One star-- for my party girl memories.
Funny I say party girl memories considering it's a relatively new venue. Anywho, I'd have to agree with my buddy Chris T. This place did hit its peak in March.
I don't really feel like elaborating on why this place gets a kinda low rating in my book-- but I'd have to agree with most of the negative things that my fellow yelpers have said in their reviews. All true people.
Instead, I'll focus on why I gave it an extra star-- Nice smoking section! Sorry, I know a lot of people are against esmoking and didn't like walking through a cloud of smoke prior to getting into the club-- Motif was smokers paradise. It was like you were inside.... but you were smoking! You could even smoke on the balcony upstairs (though it was hard to get up there and usually was already at capacity) and people watch below.
Other than the nice venue and the fun memories, this place isn't that great.
ive read so much about this place on Yelp..... i heard it referred to as "Brotif"..... heard horror stories.... and yet, ended up coming here last night.
i dunno wut i was thinking, but i came here for this random person's birthday celebration. he chose Motif because his younger brother happened to be spinning at Motif that night, and god knows what other reasons he had for going to this place.
the words i can use to describe this venue are "Faulty" and "Played out". two dance floors, not really that crowded. strange lighting, some shady lookin people here and there. one of the bottle service girls tried to overcharge a person in the group for one of the bottles of Grey Goose. we know our shit. dont try to play us, you beezy.
random people i talked to in here were saying that the club across the street (Wet) was the place to be at, and that the spot to be at a few years ago was "Taste Ultra Lounge", before that, "Deep"
at the door, they were originally trying to charge me 15$ to get in, but after they found out i was with the birthday group, they ended up NOT charging me fifteen
boy, im glad i didnt have to pay 15 dollars. this place is not worth the money. it was not crackin. i would have been upset if i had to pay fifteen dollars to get into this
the next place i will consider tryin out is Wet. from what i heard, its 20$ to get in. no matter what day. but is worth the money... we'll see. the club scene cracks me up. san jose is real lame sometimes...
Alright! My Turn to kinda revive this rate wars....
Kassy! Lets put a picture behind that name girl! Show 'em what you're worth.....wait a woman's worth is not defined through a picture. It's all inside....
Motif is where i help throw parties every now and then with my best party-chill buddy here, I see the addressed problems and it is true;
Why should people wait in line to get upstairs when there's nobody there virtually on some nights? Maybe they should enforce it only when the place gets crackin.
On some fridays, we usually take some dollars off the general admission and $5 dollars on the guest list.
Email me all your guy's complaints and ill forward it to the higher authorities.
Overall, we all live in MAN-Jose and NOT all guys stare you down to EYE RAPE all the women.
I've Been Here A Few Times! Its Really A Hit Or Miss! I've Had 4 hits and 4 misses! Some Sunday Nites They Have Crave Night(Which is Pretty much Gay Nite) The Bouncers Could Be A Little on the rude side! But hey i can live with that! The Decorations And The Actual Place Its Actually Really Nice! very Modern! I Like the outside Patio! Their Drinks Were Actually Strong And Well Made! So If U Wanna Give this Place A Chance Come in a Big Group And try to enjoy it!
This place has no room to move around in. If you like the bumper car atmosphere then this is the place to go to.
I'm just going to start off by saying that I really fail in the peer pressure department.
So people were heading out here last night to kick off a friend's weekend birthday celebration. Well, I was tired and hungry from just working out, and wasn't up for it. So when one of the girls calls me at 6:30P telling me to head out, I had to tell her no. After grabbing some food and chillin' for a bit, I get a text saying "Please please please go." Hrm, I paused for a bit, and was like, *Aww damn, okay fine! I'm down.* Haha, like I said,.. I don't do well with intense amounts of peer pressure.
We got there around 11:00P and there was a line wrapping around Agenda. We had other girls meeting up with us, so waiting wasn't a big deal. Once inside though, it was seriously a sad scene. Downstairs was less than half of capacity, it was like everyone in line was just now inside. And the guy to girl ratio was, no joke,..15:1. Upstairs was worse. No matter how much alcohol you've consumed, it's never easy to dance when guys are practically eye-raping you.
But, the night wasn't a complete bust. The highlights included:
1) Getting the birthday boy messed up in a hour, flat. We're good friends.
2) Oh, when Mr. Cool tried to holler, but stepped on my foot instead. He was cute and apologized, but I had to take that Corona right out of his hand as a peace offering.
3) And last but not least, meeting fellow yelper Fraulein C.!! She came with one of our friends. We're totally smart and put two and two together by the end of the night. The convo kinda went like this..
Me: Hi, what's your name again?
Fro: Fro,.. it's short for Fraulein.
Me: *thinking, thinking, thinking* What? Wait, are you on Yelp?!
Fro: Yea, I am! I recognized you, but didn't want to say anything cause I didn't want to look stupid!
Me: Aww, haha no way!
So Motif gets 2 Stars for being a pretty venue, spinning decent music, and serving strong drinks. But meeting Fraulein C. so randomly totally deserves another Star. And do you know how, I know she's cool? Cause she already yelps, durrrr!
