Ah, Mother's, how I love thee...
You're not gonna tell me about another place where the Natty Bo bottles are ice cold, the mussels are piping hot and delicious, and everybody else at the bar is as friendly as the folks from back home.
Seafood tastier than restaurants that charge twice as much, and good cold drafts.
Sounds like I need to get up to Baltimore again soon....
I usually end up at Mother's at least twice a month after night classes with some of my friends. It is a little meat-heady but I guess most of federal hill is either meat heads or scenesters. The food is good, the service is good, and the beer is cold. They also have a (small) parking lot right next to the bar which is very convenient considering that parking in fed. hill can kind of be a problem. I haven't been in during the weekend and I have heard that it is much more crowded and loud on Friday and Saturday. I am not such a fan of televisions in bars or restaurants but pretty much every place has them now so I guess that is nothing to really complain about. Mother's is a pretty fun place that always has consistently tasty, reasonably priced food and beer.

While exploring Federal Hill and looking for a place to eat we caught the smell of this bar establishment kicking out steaks. The place is not fancy by any means the food will make you feel otherwise. The specials were insane. It just happened to be $10 entrees on Thursday night. It appeared there were chef's specialties that rotated on a seasonal basis and they all sounded great. The menu looked to be a mix of Maryland, Cajun, and Thai. Odd but delicious. The beer menu was extensive with plenty of local brews. There was a nice crowd and the wait staff was plenty.
I'll just say that Mother's has a shot at 4 stars except for one thing. They don't have a drink menu and that can get you really jammed up at the end of the meal. Soft drinks (including club soda) are $2 a pop and no, refills are not free. Get a call margarita and you may end up with a $13 drink. That's how it happened to us. $50 bar bill for a $30 lunch.
Lunch was fine, nothing out of this world. I got a cheesesteak -- I give them credit for having a pretty good tasting house "sauce" on it, along with mushrooms, peppers, and onions, and provolone (not "whizz" for all you cheesesteak nerds who thinks that's the highest form of art).
You'd probably do all right if you buy a Bud Light like most of the frat boys at the bar. But ripping $2 for a coke (which was pepsi) and not givng refills is lame, and so is not having a drink menu and tuning you up to $13 a drink.
