Neighborhood: Old Town*Disclaimer * I took an embarrassing college course with Jennifer, the awesome owner and founder of Motel. *
I love Motel. They always have interesting and beautiful (and often cute,) stuff to show by emerging artists, and it's always a well displayed, packing lots of stuff into not a lot of space without it seeming cluttered or disheveled. Motel deserves you attention, and since it's so close to everything else, you have no excuse.

A must see when walking around First Thursday, Motel continually offers interesting art in their rotating gallery.
Even better is store, which shares space in the gallery, and offers art, jewelry, trinkets, wallets, journals, etcetera created by local artists and other arists from across the country.

Motel Gallery is stuffed into a tiny space in the middle of Chinatown, but somehow manages to display a variety of drawings and small one of a kind items like wallets and jewelry. The space is so small that a handful of people makes it difficult to move. Check out the online gallery under inventory for a whimsical mix of national artists. Works are usually ink, but it's not the graphic novel type of ink drawings. Instead, Motel manages to contain some of the most interesting ink work around. Motel has prints by artists featured in publications like McSweeney's, so it's a thrill to see the full size works.
For smaller items they have pins, necklaces, and other bits of fun at a moderate price.
One of the coolest stores in Portland - small art gallery and shop combination. There are great products by independent artists from all over the country, including my favorite Jen Corace.
Usually open for 1st Thursday and everyone should stop in at least once a month.
