As of 8/5/11, Mosun Sushi has unexpectedly closed in Laguna Beach.

Mosun Sushi, the great sushi restaurant beneath "Club M" in Central Laguna Beach has unexpectedly closed its doors.

I've tried calling every extension in their book ... I've run down to see if I can catch anyone there at the place ... and yes, it's SHUT, man. This Mosun girl ... she's gone fishin'.

Disconcerting, to say the least. This has been one of Laguna Beach's most popular nightstpots, not to mention one of the more innovative sushi restaurants in town. I just sent a couple of my http://LagunaBeachBest... subscribers there last week! Apologies, my dear friends, for not having more of a sixth sense.

Mosun Sushi & Sake and its popular nightclub, Club M, has shut its doors, apparently for good.

The restaurant, located at 680 S. Coast Highway, was last open Sunday night, Aug. 7, but the next morning, employees arriving found all the windows covered over with brown paper and several CLOSED signs ringing Mosun's exterior. A sign out front said CLOSED MOSUN FOR PAYCHECK EMPLOYEE CALL 949-607-7054.

I have finally began to accept the fact that authentic Japanese sushi joints are being taken over by ultra trendy, deep fried sushi with sauces, american joints.

Some of these new places aren't that bad, but Mosun sucks.

    1) Their price are outrageous for everything
    2) Their service really sucks especially when you have a big party and they already know they're collecting a 20% gratuity.
    3) Their presentation is bad....no saucers for diping sushi and they just give you a big plate with a glob of ginger and wasabi to be passed around the table...What are we...animals? :)
    4) Cool it on the super loud techno music....we will eventually go upstairs to the club

I really hope that I don't have to come back here.

This is a great restaurant - the interior decorating is gorgeous, with good use of zen river stones and bamboo.  The locals night and the all you can eat sushi nights are wonderful, and the vibe, the people, and the music all mix well.

Service is sometimes inconsistent, but when you get a good server, there's nothing better.  This is also not a great choice for large groups, although you will see large groups try to squeeze in the cramped spaces here all the time.

It almost hurts to write this because I love Mosun's atmosphere and will most likely continue to come back with a group of friends, but man their service sucks! Its really hit or miss. Usually I let little things go at Mosun, and expect sub par service but last time I was here it was bad:

    ~ no napkins
~ asked for a refill twice before it arrived
~no meso soup that we had ordered, so we canceled our appetizer before the bill came
~And of course my food came out 15-20 min. earlier than my friends chicken bento box, which always takes forever
    ~no apology

I really wanted to mention something nicely or write something on the receipt, but my friends a waitress and she asked me not too.

    Other cons:
~long wait time, with usually no seating available at the bar or anywhere else
    ~parking not so good
    ~dessert menu not so good
~really loud music- so you have to yell a convo to your friend
    ~did I mention SERVICE

    Pros:
~yummy specialty rolls ( mosun roll (my favorite)- dipped in some mayo fattening sauce but I love it)
    ~spicy crunchy roll
    ~crispy lobster roll
    ~firecracker
~affordable for everyone during happy hour
~atmosphere- especially when they have their live dj

1 star because service was seriously that bad last time

    Review for July 16, 2011:
What happened Mosun??  This place USED to be "poppin'" but, not so much any more..  Even though the dining room might be "full", I have no idea why.  The menu has totally changed (and not spell checked!), the prices are even more expensive, AND I've had more satisfying meals at a Japanese "fast-food" place.  Thanks though, for the comped first round of drinks for our friend's birthday bash - but I won't be coming back anytime soon.
PS.  Club M on a Saturday night..BLAH.. they let anyone..I mean ANYONE (a guy wearing a t-shirt and Bermuda shorts!)..in..AND it was DEAD!!

I came here once about 3 years ago and my experience was horrible and vowed to never come back. Unfortunately I had to come back last night for a friend's going away party.

Service is still horrible like always. We were about 18 people and we were short seats but the waitress wouldn't allow us to have the other table next to us since it was for another party....well yeah uhm too bad 20 mins later they realized we were REALLY short on seats and finally gave it to us. I mean really, were you seriously going to shove an extra 4 people and not give them plates and such? Apparently one of the servers bad mouthed my friend too saying that "this short dude thinks he owns the place" or something like that.

Anyways, the sushi this time was better. My friend and I ordered the hurricane and protein bar. They weren't bad. The rolls were all half off. So my friend and I paid $14 for both rolls which wasn't bad at all. Would I pay full price for both rolls together? No never because the quality wasn't worth it.

This place is a lot of fun on Friday nights since they play club banging music but if you want to be able to have table conversations with your group, good luck. This place was okay I would say I would never come back but it was fun being there with a larger group. But they need to work on customer service. One of our friends got there a bit late, it was almost 11 and they wouldn't let him in even though he said that his party was inside already...

My boyfriend and I enjoyed dinner at Mosun a few nights ago on a Wednesday. The great thing about Wednesdays at Mosun is that their sushi rolls are half price, which really means that they are the price of sushi at a regular sushi bar. The bad thing is that because of the discount, the wait was insanely long, but it was a nice excuse to go for a walk around Laguna Beach.

His favorite was the "Jackie Chan". My favorite was the one that is fried and covered in potato... I forget the name, but it was so delicious. At the beginning of the meal we got a complimentary plate of edamame, which we devoured because we were starving. At the end of the meal we got a nice plate of orange slices with whipped cream, which was a nice way to end the meal.

We sat at the sushi bar, rather than in a booth. I feel like we got ignored a little bit by our waiter because of this. The fun part was that we got to watch our sushi being made.

Ugh...this place was just frustrating and a waste of my tummy space and a Friday night.

    MOSUN RESTAURANT-

    CONS:
    1.  Hard to find parking.  Expect to be THOROUGHLY frustrated driving around the streets of Laguna Beach.  Bring quarters so you can park along the streets, parking structures are most likely full.  If you are on the verge of giving up and turning back home, know that you can park along the Laguna Beach High School for free, but you will have to hike to Mosun if you do.

    2.  Bartender was great at first- but stay past the time you finish your drink and it can get ugly.  I understand you have to make money, so a simple "please step aside for other patrons after your drink" would have been fine and I would have understood, but oh no- bartender has to talk smack TO other customers at the bar about us..."these f*cking people are so f*cking blah blah blah"...like REALLY?...REALLY?

    3.  Bathrooms smell!! Prepare to take a deep breath before you step inside the ladies restroom.  I had to learn the hard way.  There is something wrong with the plumbing and toilets do NOT flush...gross.

    4.  Sushi Quality-  WTF?  I have had MUCH better sushi elsewhere WITHOUT the 2 hour long wait.  Each sushi roll ranges from $13-$15.  I'm sorry, but that is just way too long for the small measly roll they give you.  On Fridays, apparently it's half off your rolls, so your $15 is $7.50, which is probably what you SHOULD be paying for those dinky rolls anyways. (-_-)

    5.  Service- Umm...waitress?  Where are you?  She was nice, but she was MIA for most of our meal.

    PROS:
    1.  DJ gave out free CDs and they had a live DJ playing in the restaurant.  I didn't get a CD, but one of my friends from my group said it was a great mix.

    Final Notes:
    * This place is not someplace I would take your date- it's loud and you will not be able to hear each other.
    * You will get into M Club for free if you dine at Mosun (get tickets from your waitress).
    * Will I come back here again?- Hell no!  My momma didn't raise no fool!

I like this place just because it's super chill. I came here on a friday night with my bf and we literally order every roll they had & It's all half off on Fridays!! WOO HOO! & the sushi taste great! Plus if you eat downstairs you get in FREE to the club upstairs!! Woo. hahah Be WARN, the club isn't like LA, it's not likee you're there to impress anyone. This is the place to go to act silly & stupid with ur freinds and no one will judge you just because they're probably doing the same thing. Looking for some good food & fun on a friday? This is probably the place to go.

What sucks is that they don't do reservations and the wait is ridic! It's not the biggest place in the world and parkingg sucks too. Lol like all the other reviews... GO EARLY to ensure everything works out!

50% off sushi for locals on Wednesday & Friday.  You can't beat that with a chopstick.

If you get there around 5, you beat the young 18-20 something LB crowd and won't be subjected to hearing, "OMG" "Like" "Really!!" and every other screech that comes from bleached blonde babe.

The sushi here is freshly prepared with nice twists.  We always sit in Ryan's section of the sushi bar.  Who knew a white boy could slice it up?!

Anyway, ask Ryan to whip you up something special that's not on the menu, its always innovative and delish.

It can get crowded on week nights because of their specials so get here early to snag a table. They also play good music and the ambiance is fun and modern...good crowd for young people.

I came here because I purchased the OC Register Deal. I gave the coupon to the waitress and she told us if we wanted to use the coupon that night we had to pay full price for the rolls. They have this deal on Wednesday nights that all rolls are $6!! yeah not bad. BUT The waitress was nice and told what would be better for us at the end of the night. In the end we were able to use the coupon. Sushi isn't the best I have had better, but still pretty good. You really are just paying for the area.

Pros: Hip place to come on the weekend. If you want to shake your tail feather then they will give you one ticket to get into the club upstairs. The club is alright...good music. Just keep in mind that you are in an area where people think their $$ will talk. The guys think this most! They will 'casually' mention what they do for a living and the kind of car they drive...haha!

Parking for this place...is not good!! Drinks are overpriced! $12 for a Martini!

This place was NASTY! I should've known from the minute we walked in because it smelled like gross dirty tables...

I came here because I bought this deal on travelzoo so I figured I would try it out.

    We had:

    1. Oysters: Disgusting and the presentation was horrible. It was an order of 6 on a white plate that had regular soda ice cubes keeping them cool.

    2. Lobster wontons: Again disgusting and soooo fishy. The presentation for this was also horrible. 5 or 6 tiny pieces on the same huge whit plate the oysters came in.

    3.  A few rolls: Mosun, Kamikaze, Alaskan, and salmon sushi... I thought the Mosun roll was ok.. but everything else was bleh!

To top everything off... service sucked.. Our server was nice but slow. We went on a Tuesday night when they have their 6.00 roll specials, so you know a lot of people were there.. You would think they would have more servers working, but I only saw 2 maybe 3...

    Never again!

NO harm done if you happen to eat sushi at a hip trendy nice clean place, that is not hole in the wall. and that is exactly what I did this Saturday. I am not a food crique and I just know what I like and what I dont like, and sushi at Mosun - I like!  I like loud music esp. top 40s, and here they have that. score! if you want to enjoy a quite time, dont come here. its almost like eating at a dance club.

I got the Burning Sunset, which is baked spicy tuna roll topped with spicy cream sauce. Super yummy! and I also got the rainbow roll. Good! chef WInson behind the sushi bar made the night more than pleasant with his funny comments, and sushi making talent! Every plate that went out of his sushi counter was work of art. he was constantly asking questions and checking on us to make sure we are good with everything. Pretty cool!

End of the meal, he asked if i wanted an orange, and i was like cool, and he made this super duper presentation with orange, and whip cream and chocolate sauce with straw berries. It was pretty nice. I noticed everyone got something like that at the end of the meal. A nice touch obviously!  The prices arent that bad, but I hear Friday and wednesdays are 50% off, so i am gonna come back. teh burning sunset was close to 12$s.

so go here if youare up for a loud night out with music and sushi, and if you can find winson find a chair on his side of the sushi bar!

I usually prefer Sushi restaurants that are more low key, hole in the wall, family-owned type deals. They usually provide more authentic Japanese food, which is of course one of my favorite cuisines.

However! This place is fun. The rolls are diverse, different from what you would usually see at a more traditional restaurant. My absolute favorite here is the Baked Alaskan -- Philadelphia roll, deep fried. It is divine. I always order it here, and it's the one roll that drives me back to this place. The ambiance is, like I said, not what I'd prefer for a Sushi dinner. But it is fun when you're out on a weekend night, drinking and dancing (@ClubM, located right above).

    Tips:
    * Parking is pretty standard for Laguna Beach-- there's no set parking. If you're lucky you find a spot right off the main street, PCH. If not then you just park within the neighborhoods located directly behind. Either way, it's not a bad walk.
    * Wednesday nights (when my friends and I usually go) is locals night. I believe Friday nights may also be, but I'm not sure. Locals night = 50% off all Food. It's an incredible deal! I'd recommend coming on these nights (just remember to ask/tell your waitress).

    Happy Eating!

Great sushi, fun atmosphere, awesome deals.

Mosun has a really generous menu for discounts for SoCal residents and happy hour.  The times that I've been, there has been dj's usually playing top 40.  The restaurant is attached to Club M so it has a really club-like atmosphere, so be sure to dress the part.  The seating is a bit cramped as it gets really crowded here during the weekends and there can be a bit of a wait.

It's minutes from the beach with the usual impossible beach parking, but it's worth it.

I've only been here once with Japanese Club but it was a fairly good experience. The one major con I give this place is their Wednesday night special of 50% Everything on the Menu and the fact that they do not accept reservations that night. (Anticipate a long wait if you have a large party of more than 3 people!)

We waited for literally an hour and 45 minutes before they finally had a table arranged for us. Service was pretty efficient and the owner greeted us and apologized for the wait. Food was good and considering that the sushi prices were high regularly, it was nice only paying around $4-7 per roll instead of $10+.  This is another location that made Spicy Tuna roll without cucumber which I prefer.

I might come back again when I have a smaller party of friends attending.

Eh...this place could be so much better.

I used to come here weekly a few years ago. Back then we only came for Wed/Fri for 50% off all food. We came on a Wednesday night at 9 and it was still quite busy. Luckily it didn't take long for a table for 2, but that was the least of our problems.

The sushi is good because I knew which ones to order:

    --Firecracker Roll
    --Kamikaze Roll
    --Diablo Roll
    --Tuna Tataki Appetizer

The food was great, but it took FOREVER to order and receive our sushi. The waitress forgot my drink after 3 reminders. Then they screwed up the bill..they UNDER-ordered. I couldn't leave in good conscience and only pay 16 bucks for all the food, so I had them go over the bill, took another 20 minutes to get the right bill.

This stuff is inexcusable. The food is great but I can't come back because the service ruins everything. And its far too noisy to have a conversation. It was nice knowing you Mosun.

Great place to spend Cinco de Mayo, because it's not busy ... yea right. It was my first time ever sampling the sushi at Mosun and it wasn't half bad. The vibe is super obvious and the service is pretty hodgepodge - the hostess told us there was only one server on (with a packed restaurant, wtf?) and it would take a while. They were incredibly sweet about this, though, so all was forgiven.

On a positive note, this place seems to have a deal almost every day of the week. Tues, Thurs and Sat has a $6 menu, Weds are half off for locals, etc. Tried the Omega 3 roll and some roll topped with Sriracha. Perfectly decent sushi, and luckily it's centrally located for a not-so-quick bite before or after Laguna Beach fun.

I come here because it's open late until 10:30 and they always have really good specials going on. I've only gone at $6 sushi roll days (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday) but the 50% off everything days are also a nice deal. Where else can you get whole specialty sushi rolls for so cheap?

The downside is the service. If you come on a remotely busy day, it takes forever to get a server to talk to you or get your food. By the time your rolls come, you are already hungry for more so what you ordered 30 minutes ago wasn't enough. In some cases, I suppose you can never be totally full. Maybe that's their plan! I came late on a Tuesday and it was pretty dead so service was on time.

Come for the cheap food and leave lots of time for the slow service. Or come on a weekday.

Actually the hostess was so unprofessional and nasty that we decided we do not want to spend our time and money Here!

The owner of this business should take a serious look at his employees they are going to eventually fuck his restraunt with this level of service!
I am from NYC and I make sure none of my friends and of course I never come here ever again !

Stay away from this place unless they fire the hostess! NO KIDDING !

When it comes to sushi it seems like there are two schools. On one hand, you have quite sushi bars with Japanese chefs which prepare authentic nigiri and sashimi. You might get a hand rolls ocassionally, but rarely order any large cut rolls.

Then on the complete opposite end of the spectrum you have places like Mosun. Loud music; lively patrons bantering with the chef and staff; and more crazy cut roll combinations with odd sauces than you can throw a stick at.

Come in on a Thursday or Sunday for $6 per roll. It's an awesome deal, guaranteed to fill you up. Some of my favorites are the Omega 3 roll (salmon and avocado for that Omega-3 fat overload) and the Jet Li roll.

After numerous trips to the sushi bar, I finally made it out to the "Club M" upstairs. I doubt I'll ever be back. We arrived on a Friday night around 10pm and the place was mostly dead with a very mixed crowd. The DJ was playing some odd combination of hard dance music and wasn't mixing between tracks too well. It was quite amusing to watch people on the dance floor stand there awkwardly between songs, waiting for a new beat to become clear. Drinks were watered down and overpriced.

The line was super long on Friday night. The service is not as bad as Yelpers described. This is a very casual sushi spot. I tried their "specialties" rolls, some are different but overall the foods didn't impress me very much. Got great music. I would like to try out the club next time; however, I wouldn't come back just to eat sushi.

P.S. It is super hard to find parking.

Tasty sushi, great night/outing atmosphere.  Haven't tried the club but hear it's fun and free for those that dine in.  So far, the best place for AYCE sushi in Orange County - best value, best quality.

AYCE Mondays are great, the rolls are made to order.  Don't waste your stomach on the appetizer salad - it's less than unimpressive.  Only wish you could order sushi as part of the deal and not just rolls.

    Excellent Specialty Rolls!

I was visiting Irvine from Seattle and ventured on to Laguna Beach in search of dinner. I drove by the place and it looked interesting. Friendly staff greeted you at the door. While there was a bit of a wait for a table, we opted to just eat at the bar. If you can get a spot where they slice the Sushi, it appears to be worth the wait.

We ordered the The OC, Kamikaze, Samurai and Diablo rolls. Insanely delicous all three. The DJ was playing excellent music on top of it all. All while sipping on a Kirin. Delicious. Very delicious and I was surprised on how large they were.

This place deserves a 6th star for the music videos playing with the song. I love it!

I will definitely come back here again when in the OC.

This is one of the better sushi places i've eaten at in Orange County, but I probably wouldn't come back unless I had a coupon or just really wanted to eat sushi while I was in Laguna Beach.

My girlfriend and I came here the night I finished the LSAT to celebrate my liberation from studying. We came right when it opened for dinner on a Saturday, and even by the time we left it was still pretty empty here. It has a fun atmosphere to it, definitely not your traditional Japanese restaurant. They have loud music playing in the background and the whole place looks very modern. Take a look at their website and you'll get a good idea of the essence of this place.

We had the tempura vegetables as an appetizer, which were good and was well-portioned. My girlfriend ordered a bento box as her dinner and I ended up ordering the Mosun Roll (baked scallop) and one of their other raw sushi rolls. I honestly don't remember what the other one was (it was just okay) but the Mosun Roll was VERY good. My girlfriend's bento box was nothing special though, you can certainly get much better than that for a better price at other places. We also had a couple of Sapporos to go along with our meal.

Luckily our server gave us some kind of discount, which was good because otherwise our bill was over $80! For how much food we got, that just would not have been worth it. But for the location, it's a great date place because you can eat dinner then take a walk along the beach afterwards or just take a stroll around the town. If I had paid full price I probably would have only given this place 3 stars.

Eight of us came in for the $20 all you can eat night and boy did we take advantage. I'm surprised we all didn't lose our dinners like in that amusement park scene in the movie Problem Child.

Rolls and rolls and rolls came out along with sushi and other random things stuff with meats and random veggies.

I think I ate too much because my brain forgets everything we had. It doesn't matter, just try it all!

Totally worth the money for a crazy amount of food. I'd bring a mint because the eye-candy is out of this world and maybe you'll get lucky!

Parking is easy (yeahhh this not SF!), decor is awesome, cover is free before 10 and $10 after (reasonable), music is...kind of terrible. The DJ keeps announcing his own name and does not transition songs AT ALL. They end abruptly. Each song is also about 30 seconds. WTF DJ. It was very sad when he played a song I liked--I was overjoyed, and then it would disappear out of the blue.

The crowd is generally young and attractive. Lots of well-dressed white people here. My friend got hit on by a married woman...the photo evidence of this was amazing. I, on the other hand, got ogled at by a 60 year old white guy. He was probably the only old dude in there so I felt very special.

My friends and I come a lot on Sundays for the $6 sushi rolls.  There are a ton of options and every roll we have tried has been delicious.  We ALWAYS start out with a Mosun roll (baked scallops), and usually get one to two rolls each.  Other favorites include the Washington, Alaskan, and Kamikaze.  We usually walk out of there paying less than $15 each.

I really want to come back for the 50% off days for locals to try menu items not part of the $6 roll deal.   This place has really great deals, so make sure you come on a day with specials!

Came here for an early dinner and was seated at the sushi bar.  It was empty but we didn't mind, our sushi chef kept us entertained by talking to us the whole time.

We ordered the Kamikaze, Protein Bar, and Omega 3 roll.  I was kind of hoping for more sushi and less specialty rolls but it's ok cuz the rolls were pretty bomb.

    Recommend: Kamikaze.

We had a coupon ready but our sushi chef gave us the special which was half off since we came in so early.  That made my dinner taste that much better.  Friendly staff with a cool setting.  Only downside is there is no parking anywhere.  The have some metered street parking which gets filled up pretty quickly so you'd have to find street parking in the neighborhood and walk.

Absolutely delicious! I loved the atmosphere of the place too. They had a live DJ spinning the entire time which gave it a lively vibe. The place is not too big so get there early or make reservations. There's no reservations on Fridays because of the awesome 50% discount off your bill they have every Friday.
My favorite roll was the Alaskan Roll. One of the best i've tasted at. I also tried the spicy crunch roll which was pretty good too. The best sushi I tasted was the albacore. It was fresh and so good I would have it all night. I also tried the Ono which was pretty good too. Oh the Mosun Roll with baby scallops was delish! Honestly, we ordered $150 worth of rolls and sushi and we liked it all.
Great place for a date, birthday, or just to have some good sushi. Just get there early if you're planning to go on Friday cuz it can get pretty packed.

I LOVE the sushi here and i think it taste amazing!  My favorite is that scallop one, not sure what its called though.   That dish is like a dream!  I am not that picky about food or be amazed by food much, but for my face to light up after a bite of this is definitely something new.  The fried potato sushi is not bad, but a bit hard after frying.  Like I said, that scallop sushi is like a dream.  If you know me, I never say any food is a dream so is a must try.

The sushi bar is pretty hip because it plays club music while you eat.  Lights are dim and serves alcohol.  I think its a fun place to eat.
    ---------------------------------------------

The club M on friday night on the other hand i would give it a less star.   The crowd is older compare to most clubs ive been to.  I think its a club for the 40's and 40's dance a bit different from younger age groups.  Its not really for me.  Although I was quite impressed by this guy with a tie who danced.  If you see him, you'll know who i am talking about. haha.

Over all my opinion is: go for the sushi and I will say you won't regret.
