6 reviews for MOSI - Museum of Science & Industry
I hold this place near and dear to my geeky heart. I pretty much grew up here. My family has had a membership every year since the opening and I like to visit this place with my little brother's at least once a year when I come down to visit.
I would recommend the summer classes for kids. I always enjoyed their classes here more than summer USF, Gifted Summer School, or Rec Center attempts. Yay for learning how to do Flash Cartoons as a preteen.
I still enjoy their kids exhibits, they tend to be relevant and up to date.
IMAX IS THE BEST EVA!
I love this museum, period.
I have been going to MOSI since I was a kid. My first time was in seventh grade, I was in the National Junior Honor Society and my Science teacher arranged for us to spend a day at MOSI. We went into workshops and developed our own television show I think and afterwards we shopped around and played at some of the arcades before watching an IMAX movie about the sunken Titanic. The IMAX experience is so unreal there, on a trailer that throws you off a cliff, I really felt like I was falling. All the girls I was with were scared and clinging on me. =)
During my sophomore year of high school, I returned with my sister and her now ex-boyfriend to see the Human Bodies exhibit, which was an experience like no other. I was a little scared looking at people who were long lost, but it was also very intriguing. We stayed around for some time and I was able to really observe what the exhibit had to offer.
This past year I went with my parents to MOSI for a vendor event and they catered some food that tasted quite delicious, we then looked around the exhibit on the third floor and I tried out the face morphing machine that changes your face to show you what you will look like at different ages. My parents and I had a pretty cool time just looking around the exhibit.
Tampa Tweetup, a group of Tampa twitter users had their last meetup at MOSI and we had an awesome time there. They showed us the view from the top of the observatory, a really stunning view at night. There was also a DJ and plenty of delicious food similar to when I visited with my parents for a vendor event.
My most recent visit was to participate in MOSI's Virtual Ambassador Program, which intends to create awareness about MOSI, and I was able to explore all over the place with the President Wit Ostrenko to hidden areas and a full explanation of what MOSI does and intends to do. It really is a center of creativity and has so much potential. I'll keep you guys updated on MOSI as I keep visiting in this program.

This museum is really cool and interactive. They have a really big children's section with plenty to see and do. My son had fun being blown away in the tornado exhibit and we both got blown away in the hurricane exhibit before going home. They also have a cool exhibit with a demonstration of an earthquake and a building that you make, and another exhibit with a building in a hurricane that you create and blow down.
One of the current exhibits features electricity, but my son ran away from it. As for other exhibits, they had one focusing on the process of birth and another focusing on hearing. My son ran out of the listening room when the beeps got too loud! Hahaha.
They also have a section that looks like a real news station. You and your child can pretend to be anchormen or you can stand in front of the green screen and forecast the weather.
Only downside is the entrance fee was kind of steep. $13 for me and $11 for my son. But it was worth it. All in all, we had a wonderful time here!

MOSI, Museum of Science and Industry, whether you are a native Floridian or just passing through, put this on your list of things to do.
There are great interactive exhibits. Especially the Bodies exhibit.
The butterfly garden and the tornado exhibit are fun to be a part of.
The IMAX theatre is one of the best I've been to. They have a great rotation of films both new and specially made for IMAX. The regular films are a bit unnerving to watch. I have seen Matrix and the new Star Trek movie there and it can be kind of nauseating with all the motion and your eyes have a hard time adjusting to the massive screen size.
The specialty films are well worth checking out. They really give you a sense of motion and immediacy. A very immersive experience. They have liquor and beer at the snack bar.
Overall, it is on the expensive side but the overhead to run a place like that is high and it is well worth plucking down the asking fee to keep it in business.
We stayed mostly in the children's museum area and loved it. Lots of inventive & interactive exhibits. There is a bed of nails that you can lay on and not get poked. Slightly scary but neat for the kids. Also loved the outdoor hurricane tunnel and butterfly house.
All in all a fun place.

Excellent interactive museum where I've been many a time on school field trips. The main attraction at this place is the iMax movie theater, but I personally liked the hurrican tunnel. Although, living in florida, I guess I could have just stepped outside during one of the storms - just kidding! I woudlnt' be safe from flying or falling debris.... ..ANYWAYS they also have pretty good dinosaur animatronics that any kid would fall in love with.
